Brian Thomas Jr. has struggled this season

Brian Thomas Jr. had such an incredible rookie season that this year the expectations were sky-high. However, the LSU product has not lived up to that during his second year. You could say he is going through the infamous ‘sophomore slump‘ and his chemistry with Trevor Lawrence has diminished.

Thomas has 30 receptions in 60 targets, for 420 yards and just one touchdown. He also has nine drops already. In comparison, he had 65.4% catch rate instead of 50%, he had 1,282 yards and ten touchdowns. As a matter of fact, he also had seven drops in all season, so he already surpassed this number in just eight games this season. Liam Coen is not happy with those struggles.

Who can step up for the Jaguars?

Newly-arrived Jakobi Meyers will slide right into it and he is a very good wide receiver, however he barely knows the playbook. Also, Parker Washington has been surging as a big weapon amid all the injuries.

Washington has 19 targets in the last two games. He’s caught 12 receptions for 142 yards in those two games. He is likely to have another big games against a tough defense like Houston’s.

Jakobi Meyers was traded to the Jaguars for a fourth and sixth round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Speaking on his skillset, GM James Gladstone said, “I think from afar it does. You think about where we’re at in terms of volume of drops, what’s his superpower? It’s not dropping the football, right? So you just take it from the surface level, it seems fitting.” This is also a bit of a subtle jab at the rest of the receivers.

Meyers has dropped only 11 passes in 98 NFL games and has never dropped more than two passes in the same season. He should clearly get plenty of looks given his ability and the fact that Jacksonville has many injuries on its WR corp.

Meyers’ motivation should be sky-high

Meyers desperately wanted to get traded from the Raiders. In fact, he requested a trade before the season started. Now, he got his wish and gets to play under a brilliant offensive mind in Liam Coen.

Meyers was overlooked this season. He went from WR1 to almost ignored in the Raiders. He has 33 catches for 352 yards. In fact, he hasn’t gotten more than four catches since Week 2. He is also yet to score a touchdown this season.

Meyers is a volume guy

Meyers is not a deep threat. He is more of a volume, short-to-medium route receiver. This could also help unleash Brian Thomas Jr.’s speed on deep routes. BTJ has been really underwhelming this year but Meyers could be the key piece to open the window for BTJ to explode.

The Jaguars are having a positive season and the playoffs are on the horizon. However, the offensive production has been lacking due to the drops. The Jaguars lead the NFL in dropped passes with 30. The next has just 21. Meyers will clearly solve this issue to some degree.

The Las Vegas Raiders and head coach Pete Carroll need to wake up after a bad first half of the season. Coming off their bye, they play another team that is coming off a rest in the Jacksonville Jaguars. Being the most experienced coach in the NFL, Pete Carroll’s words about Liam Coen are something to really consider.

“He’s got all of the good stuff that’s going around the league,” Carroll said to the media. “The tree [Sean McVay] that he comes from is really the one I respect the most, in terms of innovation and creativity and really good fundamental aspects of their offense.” Those are big words coming out of one of football’s greatest coaches ever.

Sean McVay made a name for himself for being hugely innovator and becoming the youngest NFL coach in his time. Coen is now one of the latest guys from the McVay tree to become a head coach.

How is Coen doing in the Jags?

It was a big start for Coen in Jacksonville. The Jags started 4-1 with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs included. However, then they lost consecutive games against the Seahawks and the Rams where the offense scored a combined 19 points.

However, Coen has shown promise and character fit enough to become a very good head coach. Also, he has revived the career of running back Travis Etienne. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is still not showing his potential but at least the team is winning.

What are other head coaches that come from the McVay tree?

Three other McVay’s offensive assistants are current head coaches in the NFL. Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur and Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell are doing terrific jobs in their respective teams. Not only that, both could be considered top 10 head coaches in the league.

However, the other is Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals. The difference is that Taylor is in the hot seat and has been questioned plentily. Having said that, Taylor is the only one that has gone to a Super Bowl, though in a losing effort.
