Belichick’s first year at Chapel Hill ended with a 4-8 record and an ACC record of 2-6. The team ended with a three-game losing streak, two of them being by more than two possessions.

Ole Miss, during Lane Kiffin’s last year, ended 11-1 and ended the season with a five-game winning streak. Hence, LSU is hoping that’s the coach the Tigers have, not one than has a losing record.

Kiffin is highly regarded by his innovation and smart level of coaching. He is a very good offensive mind and turned Ole Miss into a national heavyweight. Now, his mission is simple: turn LSU into a natty contender once again.

LSU hasn’t been relevant since Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson made history at LSU by destroying every single program they faced. However, that was in 2019. After that, they spent two years at .500 or worse. In 2022, the Tigers had a 10-4 record but Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama were better than them.

Kiffin actually beat LSU in the SEC standings in 2023 as the Tigers ended fifth in the SEC. Last year, LSU finished seventh in the SEC, so desperate times call for desperate measures and Kiffin will now be tasked to make the Tigers a perennial contender once again.

As Pete Nakos of On3 reported, Nussmeier won’t be playing as he is still dealing with an injury. This will be the third week that Nussmeier misses a game after suffering an abdominal strain.

Nussmeier has completed a 67.4% for 1,972 yards and 12 touchdowns to five interceptions. LSU lost four of its last five games with Nussmeier under center, and also scored 25 or less points in each of Nussmeier’s last five games.

Van Buren has played in five games this season, completing 64% of his passes for 647 yards, throwing four touchdowns and one interception in the process. In those five games, he has a 3-2 record.

If Ole Miss misses a step and Oklahoma wins, they could be getting better seeding for the CFB Playoff. However, LSU and Oklahoma are not precisely friendly towards each other, so LSU will definitely trying to ruin the Sooners’ options to go to the playoff.

Alarm bells went off days ago when news broke of Nussmeier’s knee injury, which sparked rumors of a serious setback. Fortunately for Tigers fans, the head coach quickly put those concerns to rest.

During a recent press conference, Kelly addressed the media, clarifying that while his starting signal-caller is dealing with an injury, it’s not as severe as had been rumored off the record.

“Just for the record, (Nussmeier) has tendinitis, patella tendinitis. He does not have a torn ACL. We have not amputated his leg,” he said. “He has a (pissed off) patella tendon. He was out there today throwing. Tomorrow, he’ll be back out, most likely in a practice situation. So, I thought we’d calm everybody down.

“On the scale of 1 to 10, this is like a 1.5, on the scale of 1 to 10. And that’s just being honest with you so we get the right information out there, you know, regarding Nuss. It’s not a serious injury. And, it’s like guys dealing with tendinitis virtually every day, in life – take two Aspirins and I’ll call you in the morning, right? This is more precautionary.”

Clarifying the injury situation

True to his style, Brian Kelly was energetic when addressing the situation with his starting QB. The coach wasn’t immune to the swirling rumors about the severity of the injury, but he made it clear that Nussmeier only aggravated a pre-existing injury.

“I think it just planted, you know, the wrong way. And, when you have something that is, you know, a pre-existing condition, you can piss it off real easy and that’s kind of what happened,” Kelly explained.

“It’s not torn. There’s no fraying. There’s none of that. This is pre-existing. And, he probably just planted the wrong way. There’s nothing really to see on film with it. But, it’s pissed it off. Aggravated it, would be the better way to put it for me, if you guys articulate for me. He aggravated it a little bit, but he’s good to go.”

A chronic issue for the QB

Years ago, Nussmeier underwent surgery with the medical team, and his coach believes that many of these setbacks are, in part, a result of what he went through back in 2023.

“A lot of that is due to his 2023 Osgood-Schlatter surgery that he had when the tendon was irritated back then,” Kelly said. “This is just chronic. (Pissed it off) a little bit and we’ll calm it down. I mean, it’s tendinitis, you know. Tendinitis is managed every single day around the world for all kinds of, you know, different ailments.

“But, no. I mean, he’ll be – like I said. Just like a bad ankle, that you’re going to come back in. He’ll be back out. He was throwing today and be back out tomorrow.”

The current Tigers coach had a long tenure leading Notre Dame, and although he was unable to secure a championship, he left with great memories of his time with the Fighting Irish, making his choice an easy one.

“I’m happy for all those guys, I pull for them,” Kelly told CBS Sports. “A lot of the guys there that are on both sides of the ball, I recruited. Obviously I want to see those guys win it all, and I think they’re in a great position. Totally excited for those guys.”

Kelly’s departure from Notre Dame caused a lot of waves, not only because he left the program after so many years, but also because he stated that he wanted “to be in an environment where I have the resources to win a national championship.”

Later on, the coach took the time to clarify his statements: “They’re selling it the way they want to sell it,” he told CBS Sports. “Why do you leave Notre Dame? You leave Notre Dame because you’re taking another challenge. I took Notre Dame to championships. It’s just the way you want to twist it: ‘You only leave Notre Dame to go win a championship.’ I wasn’t leaving Notre Dame because I couldn’t win a championship. You can win championships at Notre Dame, but I chose another path because I wanted a different challenge.“

“I felt like I did everything that I could at Notre Dame and they felt like they did everything they could do for me,” he said to the press. “I felt like we had both got to a point where this is what they could do, right? This is what I did. And we couldn’t get past that. OK? And so here we are.”
