The New York Yankees saw how Luis Arraez slipped from their hands, but also failed to get the business going with the San Diego Padres.

Luis Arraez didn’t end up as part of the New York Yankees, as the Philadelphia Phillies guarantee Arraez what the Yankees couldn’t: to continue playing at second base. However, that’s not the only bad news for the Bronx Bombers, as they reportedly also failed to strike a deal with the San Diego Padres.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, “Padres and Yankees discussed Will Warren plus a prospect for set-up man extraordinaire Adrian Morejon but it didn’t happen.

It may not have been the Yankees’ fault though, as Heyman added that, at the end of the day, Morejon is too important for the Padres. It may also explain why the Padres appear to have no intention of trading Mason Miller either.

It’s not been the most fruitful trade period for the Yankees and that is concerning. Arraez went to the Phillies, while the Padres didn’t accept the offer for Morejon. Whether they’ve lost their allure or the front office is just not doing business correctly, the fact is all points sign to the Yankees leaving the MLB trade deadline with empty hands.

Adrian Morejon strikes out Willy Adames to end the inning

Don't trade him Preller#padres #forthefaithful pic.twitter.com/XnSkBR2vkU
— Padres Highlights (@FriarHighlights) August 2, 2026

Adrian Morejon would’ve been a great addition for the NY Yankees

Adrian Morejon would have been an exceptional high-leverage addition for the New York Yankees bullpen. He is great particularly as a premier left-handed weapon to complement their late-inning mix.

Morejon has established himself as the hardest-throwing left-handed reliever in baseball, featuring a 99 mph fastball. Through 52 appearances this season, Morejon has an 8-2 record with a 3.00 ERA, a minuscule 1.07 WHIP, and 70 strikeouts across 60 innings.

What are the Yankees major needs ahead of the MLB trade deadline?

The New York Yankees are heavily focusing their remaining efforts on securing an impact right-handed bat and high-leverage bullpen depth. Injuries have decimated the Yankees lately as well.

The New York Yankees missed out on Luis Arraez, who is joining forces with Bryce Harper on the Philadelphia Phillies.

The MLB trade deadline day saw the New York Yankees miss out on three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, who’s joining the Philadelphia Phillies via trade from the San Francisco Giants. And even though the Arraez trade could prompt Bryce Harper to make a position change, the Phillies can still avoid moving the latter to the outfield.

A report by Matt Gelb, Andrew Baggarly and Charlotte Varnes for The Athletic suggests Arraez will play second base for the Phillies, which may explain why the Yankees couldn’t land the four-time All-Star.

The report claims that teams interested in Arraez were told about his desire to continue at second base, which already made the Yankees run from behind in the Arraez sweepstakes. With that position covered by Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Bronx Bombers couldn’t meet Arraez’s position demands.

The Phillies were aware of his intention to stay at second base and made the deal regardless. Now, they’re seemingly guaranteeing Arraez’s request and have different ways to do so, including options where Harper doesn’t move to the OF.

I’m hearing it’s a very very real possibility Bryce Harper will move to RF. Bryson Stott will move to third base. Alec Bohm will move to first base.

Source confirms the Phillies are trading for second baseman Luis Arraez pic.twitter.com/lr6qoKY82Q
— John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) August 3, 2026

How Phillies can adjust their lineup with Arraez at 2B

The first option, which includes Harper moving to the OF, would be with Bryson Stott playing third base, moving Alec Bohm to first base and having Harper on the right field.

However, per The Athletic, the Phillies could simply move Stott to third base and keep Harper at first base by trading Bohm before the deadline. Another option the Phillies have reportedly “discussed internally” is moving Stott to the outfield, with Harper and Bohm staying on the infield corners.

There are more ways than one for the Phillies to make room for Arraez at his favorite position. And even though it requires creativity, this situation makes sense. After all, we’re talking about the player who’s leading MLB with a .324 hitting average in 2026.

The Philadelphia Phillies made a blockbuster trade with the San Francisco Giants to land Luis Arraez, in a move that could lead Bryce Harper to change his position.

With the MLB trade deadline looming, the Philadelphia Phillies‘ front office stepped up by landing three-time batting champion Luis Arraez in a deal with the San Francisco Giants, reported by ESPN‘s Jeff Passan. This move is expected to see Bryce Harper make a change for the rest of the season.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post notes that the Phillies have too many infielders now, which is why a possible solution would be moving Harper to the outfield. The important part is that Harper is “thought to be willing” to make this change.

Currently second in the National League East at .527, the Phillies’ postseason aspirations are getting a huge boost with Arraez, and Harper would be doing the team a favor with such a move. However, the Phillies can still play Arraez at second base without necessarily moving Harper to the outfield.

Luis Arraez’s stats heading into Philadelphia

Arraez was one of the biggest names to watch heading into the MLB trade deadline. A four-time All Star, the left-handed infielder has established himself as the best at his job in 2026.

Bryce Harper brought his outfielder's glove on the last road trip, saying he was ready to move to the outfield, if needed.

He's expected to move to the outfield to make room for Luis Arraez in the infield.

Hitting .324 with four homers, 47 RBI and an .801 OPS this season; Arraez is also a two-time Silver Slugger Award-winner with a career batting average of .318, boasting 40 home runs and 348 RBIs. The numbers speak for themselves as the Phillies’ rotation just got a massive upgrade.

Arraez’s contract arriving in Philly

Arraez, who turns 30 in April 2027, is arriving in Philly under the $12 million, one-year deal he signed with the Giants in February. Only time will tell us whether his performance with the Phillies earns him a new paycheck in the City of the Brotherly Love. If not, he will hit free agency next year.

Full terms of the Arraez trade to Phillies

Jayson Stark of The Athletic adds that, along with Arraez, the Phillies are landing right-reliever Caleb Kilian, whereas the Giants get prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair in return.

The New York Yankees might not be able to land Luis Arraez after all.

Luis Arraez is a name to monitor as the MLB trade deadline comes close. It seems like the New York Yankees like the second base, but they are not in position to land him yet, as other teams seem to be in the right spot to land him over the Bronx Bombers.

Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the “Rays, Rangers, Phillies are among teams on Luis Arraez, who prefers to stay at 2B where he’s thrived this year in SF. Yankees like him but positional fit might be an issue for them.“

As a mere positional fit, the Yankees don’t know what to do if they land Arraez. He wants to play at second base, but that’s Jazz Chisholm’s spot, and it’s unlikely that the Yankees will move that.

Why is Luis Arraez a name that attracts heavy-hitter teams?

Luis Arraez attracts heavy-hitter and contenders because he is an elite, rare bat-to-ball machine who practically never strikes out. He consistently sprays hits across the entire field, applies relentless pressure at the top of a lineup, and provides affordable, short-term contract flexibility.

Luis Arraez's four-hit game today was the 24th of his career, which is the most in @MLB since his 2019 debut! pic.twitter.com/ug9cfCxuu2
— SFGiants (@SFGiants) July 30, 2026

Also, Arraez is playing on manageable short-term or rental contracts (such as his San Francisco Giants deal), so he allows big-market buyers to add an impact bat without long-term financial bloat.

Is Arraez better than Chisholm?

The Yankees see in Chisholm a solid 2B, so that’s why they’re hesitant on Arraez. Arraez and Chisholm are completely different types of baseball players, making “better” depend entirely on what skill set a team values more: elite, contact-heavy hitting and high on-base consistency, or power, speed, and positional versatility.

Luis Arraez is proving some analytics critics wrong, delivering a strong start through his first 13 games with the San Francisco Giants in the 2026 season and showing consistency at the plate.
Luis Arraez is turning heads with his first 13 games for the San Francisco Giants, posting a .320 batting average that leads his teammates. So far, he has collected 16 hits in 50 at-bats and driven in six runs, ranking second on the team in RBIs.

Kylen Mills highlighted Arraez’s strong numbers on X, noting that he also ranks as the fourth-hardest hitter to strike out early this season, with just four strikeouts. That puts him well outside the top 10 in that category, currently led by Matt Wallner of the Minnesota Twins.

Mills added: “8th in MLB in outs above average, which tracks the number of defensive plays made and difficulty,” pointing to Arraez’s impact beyond offense and highlighting his solid work in the infield.

Arraez showing up across multiple leaderboards

The Giants have plenty of reasons to be pleased with Arraez’s production at the plate. He currently appears in seven top-10 statistical leaderboards, including hits, where he’s tied for ninth with several players, among them Brandon Nimmo.

Luis, the hug should come AFTER the Gatorade bath 😂 pic.twitter.com/jxwtnqkWCw
— SF Giants on NBCS (@NBCSGiants) April 8, 2026

Arraez has yet to hit a home run this season. After hitting eight last year with the San Diego Padres, power isn’t his primary strength. His value comes from consistently producing hits and creating RBI opportunities, which benefits the Giants lineup.

Over his last four games, Arraez has recorded at least one hit in each, putting together a solid streak while striking out just once in that span. The Giants’ next three series will be key in evaluating how well he continues to produce on the road.

“I do see it as unfair the way baseball is being evaluated right now. I think it’s extremely unfair. It’s not something I take personally, but it feels way off base that a hitter like Luis Arraez didn’t get what he deserved [in a contract],” Contreras said in Spanish to a reporter who was speaking with his teammate.

Last season, Arraez posted a .292 batting average with the San Diego Padres in what became his final year in San Diego. Among the lineup’s starters, he finished with the highest average, ahead of Ryan O’Hearn, and he was also the most productive in terms of hits with 181 total.

Contreras says Arraez is valuable

Contreras not only believes Arraez deserved a better deal than the $12 million contract he signed to play the 2026 season with the Giants, but he also suggested that many other MLB teams would gladly welcome a hitter like him to their roster, given how productive he can be at the plate.

“Honestly, I think baseball needs to be examined from top to bottom. Just because a hitter doesn’t have the highest average in MLB doesn’t mean he isn’t valuable to a team. I guarantee any other team would love to have a player like Arraez. He even said himself that it feels like he was born in the wrong era. To me, it’s very unfair.”

Contreras, meanwhile, is entering the final two years of his contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is set to earn $18 million in 2026, followed by $17 million in 2027. The contract also includes a club option for 2028, which will likely depend on his performance with the team.

The San Francisco Giants have a strong infielder in Luis Arraez, but they also have a young player in Casey Schmitt who will now need to adapt to earn the playing time he wants.
Casey Schmitt has been recovering from minor surgery, but with the recent addition of Luis Arraez to the San Francisco Giants roster, his future in the infield could get a bit complicated, though Susan Slusser’s analysis suggests it shouldn’t be all that bad.

“Because third is his best spot, Schmitt has been a trade target for clubs with a need at third two winters in a row. Now with Arraez in the fold, San Francisco might consider moving Schmitt to fill a need. The Giants could use a closer, for instance, and never would say no to a good young starter. Backup catcher is also an area to possibly add,” Slusser wrote.

As other analysts have noted, it’s highly likely Schmitt will take on a utility role across the infield. “The Giants have wanted to move Casey Schmitt to a utility role … he can back up all four infield spots and figures to replace Arraez in the late innings of a lot of close games,” Alex Pavlovic reported on X.

Letting Schmitt go because of Arraez

That’s part of what Slugger pointed out in his article for the San Francisco Chronicle, though it doesn’t necessarily have to be the final word. Some analysts are clear that, despite Schmitt having numbers similar to Arraez, there isn’t enough confidence in him as an everyday starter.

“The Giants either really liked Casey Schmitt as a utility guy or have zero confidence in him as an everyday starter. Either way, the Giants bring in one of the best contact and average bats in the league in Luis Arraez,” wrote Michael Monreal of Just Baseball on X (@ByMMonreal).

Other analyses suggest adding Arraez, who hit .292 last season, wasn’t entirely necessary, and that Schmitt or others could have handled the role better in the Giants’ infield.

“Luis Arraez is an underwhelming addition — would’ve almost rather seen the Giants roll Casey Schmitt or Tyler Fitzgerald out there. But to each their own,” Steven Rissotto of 9.57 FM The Game shared on X.

Following Harrison Bader’s arrival in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Giants continue to build a highly competitive roster.
One of the biggest stories in MLB in recent days has undoubtedly been former Phillies outfielder Harrison Bader joining the San Francisco Giants. Not content to stop there, the Bay Area team secured the services of another coveted free agent, a three-time All-Star.

According to a report from baseball reporter Jorge Castillo via his X account, Luis Arraez has reached an agreement with the Giants, becoming their latest addition. The former Padres player is expected to play a key role as the team’s second baseman.

Bob Nightengale, also via the same platform, reported that the deal is for one season, valued at $12 million. The Venezuelan star comes off a strong season in San Diego and aims to continue that level of performance.

Arraez’s numbers that convinced the Giants

Luis Arraez’s 2025 campaign with the San Diego Padres solidified his reputation as one of the most elite contact hitters in the league, providing a compelling case for the San Francisco Giants to secure his services.

Luis Arraez #4.

During the season, Arraez maintained a .292 batting average and tallied 181 hits, leading the National League in the latter category while striking out only 21 times in 675 plate appearances.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/harrison-bader-sends-a-clear-message-to-his-giants-teammates-ahead-of-the-2026-season" image="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2026/01/26135650/harrison-bader-1-1-200x200.webp" excerpt="After arriving as a new member of the San Francisco Giants, Harrison Bader made it clear what playing alongside his new teammates means to him, and how beneficial the move could be for both him and the team heading into the 2026 season.

His ability to put the ball in play—highlighted by 8 home runs, 61 RBI, and a .719 OPS—addressed a critical need for a Giants lineup that struggled with high strikeout rates in 2025.

By providing a consistent veteran presence at second base, Arraez offers the high-percentage hitting and situational reliability necessary to stabilize the infield and complement the power-heavy bats of Matt Chapman and Willy Adames.

A formidable team

The addition of Luis Arraez alongside the elite defense of Harrison Bader provides the San Francisco Giants with a perfect blend of high-contact hitting and gold-glove reliability. By securing Arraez’s discipline at the plate and Bader’s range in center field, the Giants have successfully addressed their core inconsistencies, officially solidifying their status as a legitimate MLB contender for the 2026 season.

The New York Yankees are reportedly linked to a three-time batting champion as a potential replacement for Paul Goldschmidt, with Cody Bellinger’s future in New York remaining uncertain ahead of the offseason.
The New York Yankees have spent much of the offseason in a holding pattern, waiting on clarity around Cody Bellinger and the likely departure of Paul Goldschmidt. While the roster remains competitive on paper, the lack of decisive movement has fueled concern as time begins to work against New York.

Goldschmidt’s situation appears increasingly straightforward. Age, late-season regression, and market dynamics point toward an exit, leaving the Yankees with uncertainty at first base despite the emergence of Ben Rice in 2025. Internally, there is still hesitation about committing fully to Rice as an everyday option.

According to a recent prediction from Anthony McCarron of SNY, New York may already be eyeing a different solution—one that would fundamentally reshape its offensive profile by targeting three-time batting champion Luis Arráez as a replacement for Goldschmidt.

Is Arráez the right offensive pivot for New York?

Arráez has built his career on elite contact skills rather than power, offering a sharp contrast to the Yankees’ traditional, home-run-driven identity. In McCarron’s analysis, the logic is rooted in balance rather than fireworks. “It might be worth adding a little contact to the homer-happy Yankees,” McCarron wrote, noting Arráez’s three batting titles and consistent ability to lead his league in hits.

Luis Arraez #4 of the Padres reacts during Game One of the NL Wild Card Series. Michael Reaves/Getty Images.

That skill set could provide lineup stability, particularly if New York loses Bellinger’s production. Arráez’s value lies in keeping innings alive and forcing pitchers to work, a quality the Yankees have occasionally lacked in high-leverage moments.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/mlb-rumors-phillies-face-steep-bo-bichette-price-after-key-meeting-as-market-pressure-builds" image="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2026/01/13051428/bichette-2-200x200.webp" excerpt="The Phillies are facing a steep price for Bo Bichette after a key meeting, as market pressure builds and Philadelphia weighs a potential long-term commitment.

How would Arráez actually fit in the Yankees’ lineup?

Traditionally a leadoff hitter, Arráez may need to adapt in New York. The Yankees often prefer power at the top of the order, which could push Arráez into a lower lineup role focused on turning the order over rather than setting the tone.

In 2025, Arráez played 156 games, hitting .292 with 181 hits, eight home runs, and a near-league-average OPS+. His profile is clear: when his batting average dips, his overall impact declines sharply due to limited slugging. If New York commits to contact over power, it could signal a subtle but meaningful shift—one that may define how this offense evolves in 2026.

The season is over for Luis Arráez after a relatively good year. Now, the focus shifts to the eight players who could depart from the team, opening up crucial spots for the San Diego Padres to fill with new talent.
Luis Arráez had a strong season, posting impressive numbers that included 181 hits, 61 RBIs, and a .292 batting average. While his production helped the San Diego Padres reach the Wild Card, their run ended there, and now he and seven other teammates are officially free agents who could leave the organization.

One teammate whose future is uncertain before the 2026 season is reliever Robert Suárez. In his fourth season with the Padres, Suárez recorded 40 saves across 70 games but is not tied to the team as he holds a player option.

The list of potential departures isn’t limited to pitchers. It also includes Ryan O’Hearn, who could leave as a free agent, and catcher Elias Díaz, who played in 106 games this season, contributing 9 home runs and 52 hits with a .204 batting average.

List of Padres free agents:

Luis Arraez

Dylan Cease

Robert Suarez (player option)

Michael King (mutual option)

Wandy Peralta (player option)

Ramon Laureano (club option)

Elias Diaz (mutual option)

Ryan O’Hearn

Jose Iglesias

Nestor Cortes

Mike Shildt shared his thoughts on how his team performed overall in this series, the called strike three against Xander Bogaerts, his bullpen usage and what went wrong with Yu Darvish: pic.twitter.com/P0c3vMCMCv
— 97.3 The Fan (@973TheFanSD) October 3, 2025

Six Relatively Good Years for the Padres

The last six seasons, which saw Luis Arráez and others contribute, have been relatively successful for the Padres. The team reached the playoffs four times during that span, including a run to the NLCS in 2022 where they fell to the Phillies. While the ultimate goal remains the World Series (last reached in 1998), the organization has enjoyed a significant run of competitiveness.

That competitiveness, however, made the recent elimination sting. “It s—,” Manny Machado said after being knocked out of the postseason. “For sure. It’s a position you don’t want to be in. We wanted to be holding up the trophy at the end of the year. It was our goal at the beginning of the season. We fell short.”

The focus now shifts to the offseason, awaiting the opening of negotiations between the Padres and the eight players who could depart or sign new contracts. It is likely that those who posted the best averages during the season will receive another opportunity from the team, unless they field better offers from rival clubs.

Arraez has emerged as a pivotal figure in the team’s pursuit, delivering performances so impactful that he recently achieved a milestone comparable to feats recorded by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s father and other MLB greats.

The Padres boast a solid 61-50 record this season. Despite the stiff competition in the National League West, where they trail the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres have capitalized on the San Francisco Giants’ recent struggles to strengthen their own playoff hopes.

Arraez has been a cornerstone of San Diego’s campaign this year. His consistent hitting has generated numerous scoring opportunities, and his statistics have earned him a place among MLB‘s elite since 1961. Arraez’s performance is a testament to his skill rather than mere fortune.

In 2025, his career stats have firmly positioned him alongside a select group of players who have amassed over 900 hits, 150 doubles, and a .315 batting average. This notable list includes hitters like Vladimir Guerrero Sr., Roberto Clemente, Rod Carew, Kirby Puckett, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, and Todd Helton.

Arraez’s impactful 2025 season

In addition to joining this illustrious list alongside Guerrero Jr.’s father, Arraez’s contributions are vital as the Padres gear up for upcoming challenges. He is close to overtaking the top two National League batters in batting average.

Manny Machado and Freddie Freeman are the only two National League players currently ahead of Arraez in batting average. With a .297 BA, Arraez is on the cusp of a .300+ season, which would be his seventh such campaign.

Arraez has also logged 20 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 41 RBIs, five stolen bases, a .333 OBP, and a 1.3 WAR. These stats underscore his critical role in the Padres’ victories and their aspirations for the postseason.

Approaching personal milestones

The Venezuelan standout has played 790 career games, amassing 972 hits. He is nearing a personal benchmark, potentially achieving three consecutive seasons with over 200 hits, a feat that could be instrumental in realizing the Padres’ postseason goals.
