Matt Nagy previously worked with Patrick Mahomes at the Kansas City Chiefs and will now help Jaxson Dart at the New York Giants.
Matt Nagy experienced winning it all with the Kansas City Chiefs alongside Patrick Mahomes. Now, with the New York Giants, he will have the responsibility of guiding Jaxson Dart’s career, whom he has already advised in their first meetings.

“The thing I would say with that conversation that I’ve had with Jaxson is just what you said. I think it’s a great point. He’s Jaxson Dart. He’s not Patrick Mahomes,” Nagy stated when asked about imparting some lessons about working with Mahomes.

“I was able to be fortunate enough to be around Patrick for many years, and I saw Patrick as a rookie. . .I got to see four more years of him as a vet. We’ve talked a little bit about the process and what he’s been through, but we’ve also made it clear, you have to be Jaxson Dart. He’s going to do that.“

Surround him in the best way will be the key for the QB: “It’s our job to surround him and insulate him, give him direction, but he has to be able to tell us, how he likes it, why he likes it, and so forth. We’re going to be really intentional on how we do that.”

Nagy and Mahomes in Chiefs Kingdom

During the seasons with Patrick Mahomes and Matt Nagy, the Kansas City Chiefs have achieved incredible success, securing three Super Bowl championships (LIV, LVII, and LVIII). Additionally, this duo has led the team to multiple AFC Championship titles and consistent AFC West division victories, establishing a dominant era in professional football.

Boosting Dart

Following a standout rookie year, Jaxson Dart is poised for a leap in development under the mentorship of new Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. During the 2025 season, Dart proved he belonged in the NFL by throwing for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions across 14 games, finishing with a solid 91.7 passer rating.

Beyond his arm, his mobility was a game-changer, as he added 487 rushing yards and 9 rushing touchdowns. Nagy knows that Dart has something special, and his mission will be to harness this versatility while improving Dart’s durability, ensuring the young quarterback builds on the 63.7% completion rate that made him the 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Jaxson Dart will head into the upcoming NFL season with the New York Giants with a new offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy.
A sense of change is in the air for the New York Giants. Matt Nagy has arrived in East Rutherford as the new offensive coordinator, and although he will be working closely with Jaxson Dart for the first time, he has been following him for quite some time, knowing that he has something different from the rest.

“I was able to watch a decent amount of Jaxson last year, when I was in Kansas City,” Nagy said to the press. “We tried to take as little time as possible watching the quarterback position, but every year I will watch just to see the top guys that are there, and I remember coming away impressed with Jaxson and his accuracy.”

The first moves began to be seen in the new era of John Harbaugh. That’s where the new OC truly began to glimpse Dart’s potential.

“I didn’t know how tough he was and how good a runner he was,” Nagy also added. “At the Combine, us not really being in the quarterback market, watching him, just observing how he handled himself in that group of quarterbacks at the Combine, you could see this moxie he had, this it factor. When I got here to New York and started meeting with him, you could tell right away that was true. This kid is different in that way.”

Matt Nagy looks on prior to a preseason game.

A key piece could leave the Giants

An offer too good to resist from the Bengals might be one way for the Giants to move Dexter Lawrence, who officially requested a trade this week after contract negotiations stalled. Despite being the centerpiece of New York’s defense, the All-Pro nose tackle is seeking a deal that reflects the skyrocketing market for interior linemen, as his current $22.5 million average has fallen behind his peers.

While head coach John Harbaugh has expressed a desire to keep him, the combination of Lawrence’s trade request and Cincinnati’s potential interest—possibly involving high draft picks—has put the Giants in a difficult position as they weigh his massive $35 million-a-year salary expectations against his long-term value to the franchise.

Nagy gets players back

Giants expect Cam Skattebo to be back before Nabers, as the young running back is already jogging and expected to participate in the offseason program following his ankle injury. While both are key pieces for the offense led by Jaxson Dart and the scheme of offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Malik Nabers’ recovery from a torn ACL has him on a slightly longer timeline, with a projected return closer to training camp or the start of the regular season.

The New York Giants have done their due diligence on Notre Dame star Jeremiyah Love, but are choosing to play their cards close to the chest.
The New York Giants aren’t exempt to the outside noise. Gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft, the organization in East Rutherford has paid close attention to one of the most exciting prospects in the upcoming draft class, Jeremiyah Love. However, the interest in the Notre Dame talent isn’t exclusive to the Giants, and thus they might be content with what they already have in place.

That was what new offensive coordinator Matt Nagy hinted in a message that could be interpreted in different ways. Perhaps, the Giants are trying to bamboozle the rest of the NFL, and hide their true intentions. Or, maybe, they are actually letting the league know their next move.

According to New York Post’s Ryan Dunleavy, Nagy opened up on what he sees in Love, admitting “what a great talent,” he is. Still the two-time Super Bowl champion assistant coach, commented the Giants are excited about the players they have right now at the running back position.

The Giants’ running back room currently includes Cam Skattebo, whom the NY Giants expect to be back from injury soon, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary.

Jeremiyah Love, considered the best running back in the 2026 draft class

One way to interpret Nagy’s comment on Love

On the one hand, Nagy’s message might be a way of keeping other organizations on their toes. Never let your opponents know your next move might be the mantra in New York, as the Giants face several key decisions. In typical New York City fashion, stress is off the charts inside the G-Men’s facilities.

Not only must the Giants call critical shots before the NFL Draft, but during it as well. Just like Harbaugh left the door open on a potential Dexter Lawrence trade, placing a “tradable” tag on every single player on the roster, Nagy could now leave every option on the table when it comes to Jeremiyah Love.

Another way to interpret Nagy’s answer

On the other hand, fans may see Nagy’s admission as the Giants waving goodbye to the prospect of drafting Love. This might be for various reasons. Maybe the G-Men believe Love won’t be available by the time they make their first-round selection (5th overall).

Or perhaps New York believes it could draft him but would rather spend that pick in another area of need. Indeed, Love is one of the best talents in his class, and although star halfbacks don’t grow on trees, efficient ball carriers are much easier to find (through the NFL Draft or free agency) than other positions.

NY Giants could repeat history

At the end of the day, running backs are seen as expendable around the league. For the Giants, rolling with a three-headed monster with Skattebo, Tracy, and Singletary may be a wiser decision than going all in on Love. Many believe Love might be the perfect heir to Saquon Barkley in the Big Apple.

However, Barkley’s example should also serve as a lesson for New York. The Giants drafted a running back in the top 5 of the draft but failed to surround him with talent. How did that go for New York? Saquon left in free agency to join a divisional rival.

Love may become a superstar in New York, but if he doesn’t see a winning future in town, he might opt to head elsewhere as soon as he becomes an unrestricted free agent. It’s hardly an easy decision for Joe Schoen and company to make, but it’s one that the Giants must nail. Otherwise, they might dig themselves their own grave—again.

Andy Reid, head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, faced the departure of Matt Nagy, though he values the return of Eric Bieniemy to his staff.
Losing Matt Nagy from the Kansas City Chiefs could have been a tough blow. However, Andy Reid trusts in what Eric Bieniemy can bring to Chiefs Kingdom upon his return to the franchise, with whom he once had a successful and winning connection.

“Yeah, I’m fired up to have him back,” Reid said. “When you lose a Matt Nagy, to bring a guy in who can just step in and go — that’s not an easy thing to do.

“So, I’m fired up to have him back. He brings great energy. Loves doing what he’s doing. All he wants to do is win football games and have a great offense. Ultimate team guy.”

Reid also valued the experience Bieniemy may have gained over the past few years: “Yeah, listen, anytime you leave and go different places, you’re going to kind of sort through some things and then learn some things.”

Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy talks with head coach Andy Reid.

The successful Reid-Bieniemy duo

Working together in Kansas City, Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy formed one of the most prolific offensive duos in NFL history, leading the Chiefs to two Super Bowl championships. During Bieniemy’s five-season tenure as Offensive Coordinator from 2018 to 2022, the team reached five consecutive AFC Championship games and secured three Super Bowl appearances.

Their partnership was defined by an elite scoring offense that helped solidify the Chiefs’ current dynasty.

Nagy left his mark on Chiefs Kingdom

Andy Reid and Matt Nagy have shared significant success across two different stints in Kansas City, highlighted by the Super Bowl LVIII title during the 2023 season. While Nagy’s first tenure as OC in 2017 ended in a playoff berth before he took the Bears’ head coaching job, his return to the role in 2023 solidified his impact on the Chiefs‘ dynasty.

The New York Giants are entering a period of transition with John Harbaugh and Matt Nagy on the sidelines for the upcoming season.
The New York Giants knew they needed a course correction to change their trajectory in the NFL, and that’s exactly what they did. Recognizing the talent already on their roster, they brought in John Harbaugh as their new head coach, who added multi-champion Matt Nagy to his staff.

The confidence placed in the former Chiefs offensive coordinator is significant—so much so that Harbaugh himself, in recent statements to the press, referred to Nagy as one of the best at his position in the league.

“I expect Matt to be the best ever. I’m hoping he’ll be the best offensive coordinator to ever coach the game; that’s what we’re shooting for,” the former Ravens coach said to the press.

Getting back to the Super Bowl

Harbaugh’s arrival in the Big Apple is no coincidence: the experienced coach already knows what it takes to lift a Vince Lombardi Trophy and aims to do it again with the Giants. In fact, the head coach himself expressed excitement just at the thought of celebrating.

John Harbaugh, head coach of the New York Giants

“I’ve heard people say the parade in New York is the most incredible thing ever,” Harbaugh told Ian O’Connor of The Athletic. “Coach (Tom) Coughlin told me that, and I have a vision, like, ‘Wow, I want it. I want to see that. I want to be in that parade.’

“But with that being said, what I’m thinking about is what the team looks like that earns the right to be in that parade someday. What do we have to build to get there? That’s really what I’m consumed with.”

But Nagy might not be the only one to leave Kansas City for New York in 2026. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton is among the Chiefs free agents this offseason, and Nagy’s departure could persuade him to join the offensive coordinator on the Giants.

“I’m just going to say: ‘AAF.’ Matt Nagy knows what I’m talking about. AAF,” Thornton said during a recent appearance on the Talkin’ Ball with Pat Leonard podcast, via Giants Wire. “He’s very aggressive. I love his mindset and what he brings to the table. I’m excited to see what he brings to New York. I love him.”

But Thornton did more than just praising Nagy and wishing him luck in his next adventure. The wideout also mentioned how much he loved playing at MetLife Stadium last season, hinting at a potential interest in playing for the Giants.

Tyquan Thornton after catching a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes against the NY Giants.

“It was a great experience to play in New York,” Thornton said. “I remember Coach Reid telling us there’s nothing better to do but in New York on a [Sunday] night. And I remember just going out there and trying to be electric and go out there and light the stadium up. What a great stadium in New York. Love the atmosphere.”

Thornton’s breakout 2025 season with Chiefs

Selected 50th overall in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, Thornton spent two and a half years in Foxborough before landing on the Chiefs’ practice squad.

2025 saw him get a bigger role on Reid‘s plans, with a standout performance in Week 3. Curiously, that game was against none other than the Giants and in New York. Under the bright lights of MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football, Thornton shined by catching five passes from Mahomes for 71 yards, including a touchdown.

Those numbers contributed to the Chiefs’ 22-9 win over the Giants, which sealed Russell Wilson’s time as New York’s starting quarterback to make room for then rookie QB Jaxson Dart.

Thornton might be a WR to watch in free agency

Thornton continued thriving in Nagy’s system, becoming a key target for Mahomes with many Chiefs pass catchers getting injured. Thornton went on to record 19 catches for 438 yards and three touchdowns before a concussion forced him to finish 2025 on season-ending injured reserve.

Thornton’s stock definitely went up last season, and with unrestricted free agency waiting for him in March, chances are that Reid and the Chiefs will face competition to re-sign the fifth-year wide receiver.

Nagy could give the Giants an advantage in a potential race for the wideout, with Thornton claiming that the former Chiefs offensive coordinator “let my light shine and make plays.”

And while Thornton already made it clear that he likes the Giants, he could make sense for the team as well. With Malik Nabers still facing a lengthy recovery from ACL and meniscus tears and Wan’Dale Robinson entering the open market, Thornton could provide much-needed WR depth at a low price. The interest from the player’s side exists, only time will tell us whether Nagy pushes for a reunion too.

The New York Giants plan the arrival of another Super Bowl-winning coach, following the hiring of Matt Nagy.
Although several long months remain before the start of a new NFL season, preparations are already taking shape. The New York Giants’ main goal is to reach the Super Bowl again, and they are looking to add a new coach to their staff following the arrival of Matt Nagy.

According to a recent report from insider Matt Zenitz on his X account, in the Big Apple they are setting their sights on the AFC South, specifically the Tennessee Titans. The name targeted to join the Giants for this season is Frank Bush.

The coach comes with a long career in the league, and the main goal is to add him to Harbaugh’s staff as the new linebackers coach. He has previously worked with teams such as the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Atlanta Falcons.

Bush already knows what it’s like to win a Super Bowl

Frank Bush played a pivotal role in the Denver Broncos’ legendary back-to-back championship run in the late 1990s. Serving as the team’s linebackers coach, Bush was instrumental in developing a disciplined and aggressive defensive unit that helped secure victories in Super Bowl XXXII against the Packers and Super Bowl XXXIII against the Falcons.

Linebackers coach Frank Bush.

His ability to maximize the talent of stars like Bill Romanowski and John Mobley was a key factor in Denver finally reaching the summit of the NFL. These consecutive titles cemented Bush’s reputation as a top-tier defensive mind and remain a crowning achievement in his long coaching career.

Nagy’s rings

After winning consecutive titles in Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy has joined the New York Giants to lead their offense.

Tasked with revitalizing the unit under head coach John Harbaugh, Nagy aims to replicate his championship success by taking over play-calling duties and mentoring young quarterback Jaxson Dart. By bringing his “Kansas City” expertise to East Rutherford, he hopes to transform the Giants into an immediate postseason threat.

A Super Bowl winner alongside Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs is finally leaving Arrowhead to work in the NFC next year.
Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes will head into the 2026 NFL season with different faces around them. The Kansas City Chiefs‘ coaching staff has already seen multiple departures, including many contributors to the team’s Super Bowl success in recent years.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs found out that longtime assistant coach Matt Nagy is moving to the NFC to become the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator under John Harbaugh, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Chiefs had officially confirmed Nagy was out of the team in January, following weeks of rumors about his future in the NFL. With his contract as offensive coordinator expiring, Nagy was expected to continue his coaching career outside Kansas City.

Matt Nagy settles with Giants OC job after failed pursuit of HC position

What Reid and Mahomes didn’t know was whether Nagy’s next job would be as a head coach or as an offensive coordinator. Nagy was a candidate for different head coaching openings, with the Tennessee Titans seen as his most likely destination before they hired Robert Saleh.

Matt Nagy coaching during a Chiefs game.

With no head coaching jobs left, Nagy still found a landing spot in New York to continue proving his worth running an offense. But before Nagy found a new team, the Chiefs had already replaced him by reuniting Reid and Mahomes with Eric Bieniemy, another Super Bowl-winning assistant coach.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/bills-set-to-hire-coach-who-worked-with-andy-reid-in-patrick-mahomes-first-year-as-chiefs-qb1" image="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2025/11/26093920/patrick-mahomes-7-1-200x200.webp" excerpt="The Buffalo Bills are filling their coaching staff for the upcoming season and one of their next moves is to hire a coach that worked with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nagy’s challenge in New York after Super Bowl success with Chiefs

Nagy’s experience with the Chiefs, where he celebrated two Super Bowl wins (LVII, LVIII) alongside Reid and Mahomes, makes him an interesting fit for the Giants’ offense, which also offers Harbaugh and Nagy something else other than working in a big market like New York: a young core of promising players to work with.

Nagy will be in charge of maximizing Jaxson Dart’s potential following a promising rookie year by the Ole Miss product, and with Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers recovering from injuries, the Giants’ offense is expected to shine in 2026.

There’s work to do for Harbaugh and Nagy though, since the Giants finished bottom of the NFC East last year. Their 4-13 record secured them the fifth overall pick in April’s draft, which will give New York an opportunity to pick another top prospect.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the status of his relationship with Matt Nagy following Nagy’s departure from the franchise ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
The Kansas City Chiefs are already making adjustments for the upcoming NFL season after coming off a year they wanted to put behind them. Following a disappointing campaign, the organization began reshaping its coaching staff to better support head coach Andy Reid, with one of the most significant changes being the departure of offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Earlier in the offseason, the Chiefs announced they were bringing back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator, hoping to recapture the offensive identity that defined their success in the late 2010s. That move confirmed the team would part ways with Nagy, who subsequently became a coaching free agent after his second stint in Kansas City came to an end.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid later addressed the status of his relationship with Nagy, making it clear there was no tension between the two. “We left it that simple, that’s what I would tell you,” Reid said, via Myles Simmons of NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk. “Matt and I have a great relationship. Before the season even started, I knew he wanted the opportunity to have his own show.”

At the time, Nagy had not signed with another team, though several head coaching vacancies remained around the league, including positions with the Buffalo Bills and other potential contenders.

Reid believes Nagy deserves another head coaching opportunity

Despite the Chiefs’ struggles, Reid consistently defended Nagy’s body of work. Kansas City’s offense remained productive throughout the 2025 season, particularly during an MVP-level stretch from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, before his season was cut short by an ACL injury. Reid maintained that Nagy’s contributions extended beyond any single season’s results.

“He’s been a head coach. He was Coach of the Year,” Reid said. “Everything I’ve said about him before, I still believe. There’s nothing different there. He deserves another head coaching job, and if not, he deserves the chance to go out and do his thing.”

Ultimately, the Chiefs missed the NFL playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era, a result that accelerated organizational change. Kansas City turned back to Bieniemy in hopes of stabilizing the offense and restoring the championship standard the franchise had come to expect under Reid.

The Kansas City Chiefs are moving forward and no longer want to waste time with Matt Nagy, with a Super Bowl–proven coordinator lined up to help Andy Reid next season.
The Kansas City Chiefs no longer appear interested in negotiating a new contract with Matt Nagy. Instead, the team is reportedly prepared to bring back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator, a role he knows well and a familiar presence for head coach Andy Reid.

The report came from Tom Pelissero on X: “Reunion: All signs are pointing towards Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator, sources say.” The post drew more than 140,000 views and strongly suggests that Nagy will not return.

Pelissero also noted that Bieniemy was a key member of Reid’s staff from 2013 to 2022, a stretch widely credited with helping turn the Chiefs into one of the NFL’s most dominant teams.

What has Bieniemy been doing since leaving Kansas City?

Since departing the Chiefs in 2022, Bieniemy spent the 2023 season with the Washington Commanders as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, though he lasted just one year in that role. He then moved on to UCLA, where he held the same responsibilities throughout the 2024 season.

Patrick Mahomes and Eric Bieniemy with the Kansas City Chiefs

In 2025, Bieniemy worked in Chicago and performed well, serving as the Bears’ running backs coach. It was a strong season for the team with him on staff, as Chicago reached the playoffs and competed in the divisional round in a way the Bears had not shown in years.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/dolphins-hire-jeff-hafley-which-nfl-teams-are-still-looking-for-a-new-hc-in-2026" image="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2026/01/19171000/jeff-hafley-1-200x200.webp" excerpt="With the Miami Dolphins finalizing details to hire Jeff Hafley, the head coaching market has one less vacancy.

It’s also worth remembering that the Chiefs were highly dominant offensively during Bieniemy’s tenure. In 2013, they returned to the playoffs after a two-year postseason drought. They made the playoffs again in 2015 and 2016, losing in the divisional round both times, and did not miss the postseason again until 2025. Bieniemy was part of that sustained run of success for several years.

The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be finally turning the page by pursuing another Super Bowl champion with Andy Reid to replace Matt Nagy in 2026.
The Kansas City Chiefs are seemingly moving on from Matt Nagy once and for all. With the offensive coordinator’s contract expiring, the team is reportedly chasing another assistant who helped Andy Reid get Super Bowl victories.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Chiefs are requesting permission to interview Chicago Bears running backs coach Eric Bieniemy for their offensive coordinator opening.

This decision comes as no surprise, not only because Nagy is interviewing for head coaching jobs, but also because Bieniemy has already worked as OC on Reid’s coaching staff in Kansas City with plenty of success. As a matter of fact, it was reported prior to their request for an interview that the Chiefs’ reunion with the 2x Super Bowl champion looked imminent.

Eric Bieniemy’s success with Reid, Chiefs

After being the Chiefs RBs coach in Reid’s first four years at Arrowhead, Bieniemy was promoted to OC in Mahomes’ first year as a starter, and the rest is history. In four years with Bieniemy overseeing the offense (2018-2022), the Chiefs made three Super Bowl appearances, lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy on two occasions.

Bieniemy packed the bags in 2023 to be assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, with Nagy being promoted by Reid to fill in the gap left by Bieniemy.

Bieniemy’s stint in the capital city didn’t last long though, and 2024 saw him try his luck in college football. His tenure as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for UCLA was short-lived as well, but Bieniemy repaired his reputation with a strong campaign by the Bears’ offense in 2025.

Bieniemy expected to accept Chiefs’ offer with Nagy seemingly leaving

Now, all signs are pointing towards a reunion with Reid in Kansas City. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that the expectation is Bieniemy “will be returning as the OC for the Chiefs.”

According to Russini, the Chiefs have been preparing to bring back Bieniemy for weeks as they believe Nagy will land a head coaching job. Nagy has already interviewed with multiple teams and is reportedly a finalist for the Tennessee Titans HC opening, which is why his days at Arrowhead seem to be over. However, when one door closes, another opens, and Nagy’s exit is paving the way for Bieniemy’s return as the Chiefs need a spark in offense.
