As the New York Yankees fight to stabilize an unpredictable starting rotation, manager Aaron Boone's latest update on Max Fried’s injury status could dramatically shift the team's outlook moving forward.

Amid the grim injury update regarding Giancarlo Stanton, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone offered a silver lining by laying out a return timeline for ace Max Fried as the regular season reaches its home stretch.

“Max Fried could potentially be in play for Saturday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox,” Boone told reporters, as first cited by The Athletic‘s Chris Kirschner. Fried’s return would provide a massive shot in the arm for a Yankees rotation in desperate need of stability down the stretch.

Another option who could bolster the rotation in the coming weeks is top pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez, with the organization weighing a roster move to recall the right-hander for spot starts.

Meanwhile, Boone also addressed Aaron Judge’s progress, giving New York reason for optimism as the club looks to maintain its momentum in the standings while prepping its captain for the postseason.

Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees.

What happened to Fried?

Fried landed back on the 15-day injured list on August 17, 2026, due to a recurring bone bruise in his left elbow. The move was backdated to August 14 after the southpaw experienced lingering discomfort following his start against the Seattle Mariners, the same issue that previously cost him two months earlier in the campaign.

The setback injected significant uncertainty into the Yankees‘ starting rotation just as New York begins gearing up for October. While initial scans ruled out a season-ending injury, the recurrence forced the Yankees to manage his workload with extreme caution.

As he closes in on a comeback, Fried and the Yankees hope he can return at full strength for the pennant race. If Fried and the rest of New York’s key arms can return healthy for the stretch run, the Pinstripes remain formidable World Series contenders.

Following his placement on the injured list, Max Fried turned in an encouraging first rehab outing, a promising update for a New York Yankees rotation in need of pitching depth.

Max Fried remains one of the missing pieces the New York Yankees need back most as they push through the regular season. Following his placement on the 15-day injured list, the left-hander took a major step forward by making his first mound appearance, delivering encouraging news for a depleted Yankees rotation.

According to YES Network‘s Meredith Marakovits, “Max Fried threw a 26-pitch bullpen session today. First time on the mound since landing on IL (bone bruise left elbow). According to pitching coach Matt Blake, all went well.“

Fried also addressed the media following the session, expressing confidence that his stint on the shelf won’t extend past the minimum requirement. “I’m optimistic I’ll only need the minimum on the IL,” Fried said, per Marakovits.

While manager Aaron Boone expressed concern over a separate injury to slugger Giancarlo Stanton, the front office bolstered bullpen depth by signing free agent reliever Eli Morgan to a minor-league deal as extra insurance for the stretch run. Meanwhile, the club now has a clearer timeline for captain Aaron Judge’s return to the active roster.

Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees.

Fried’s elbow injury

Fried was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a recurrence of a bone bruise in his left elbow. The move was backdated to August 14 after he experienced lingering discomfort following his August 13 start against the Seattle Mariners.

This marks the second time this season Fried has dealt with the issue, having previously missed two months from mid-May to July. However, both Fried and the team note that the discomfort is far less severe this time around, and his quick progression to bullpen sessions clears the path for live batting practice in the coming days.

With the fan base relieved that Fried appears to have dodged a major bullet, the Southpaw will continue his rehabilitation protocol with his sights set on rejoining the Yankees for the playoff push.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone dropped a reassuring yet firm statement regarding starting pitcher Max Fried's injury designation.

After placing him on the 15-day injured list (IL), the New York Yankees lost Max Fried to injury right when Carlos Rodon was activated from the IL. As fans in the Bronx grow anxious about the sudden and unexpected setback to a key piece of the rotation, manager Aaron Boone denied that the injury would require a lengthy recovery during the 2026 MLB season.

There was reason to be concerned. The Yankees announced that he is sidelined with a left elbow bone bruise, the same injury that cost Fried two months away from the mound earlier in the 2026 MLB campaign. Asked whether a similar timeline could be in play, potentially putting his season in jeopardy, Boone was categorical in his answer.

“When you look at [Fried’s] timeline last time [he suffered a bone bruise injury], it was almost two months,” a reporter told Boone before he interrupted with a blunt answer. “It’s not like that this time,” Boone stated during his media availability Tuesday. “Hopefully [this is not something Fried has to play through this season]. Hopefully we go through it and we’re good to go.”

Fried could be back in no time for NY Yankees

Based on Boone’s comments, Fried’s placement on the 15-day IL was mainly precautionary. In fact, the manager admitted Fried was getting ready to make his next start, but the Yankees chose to hold him out for some time.

Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees.

“Boone said it’s possible that Fried, who is continuing to play catch, may only miss the minimum 15 days,” per Gary Phillips of the NY Daily News. The Yankees may have Fried sit out some extra days just to be careful, though.

Patience and caution are the name of the game for the Bronx Bombers. It might be encouraging for Cody Bellinger, who urged Boone not to rush his rehab assignment in Triple-A. With Fried, it would be no different.

NY Yankees’ rotation can stay hot without Fried

Fried’s situation is way different from Bellinger’s and Aaron Judge’s—who is inching closer to a return—though. The Yankees’ rotation has been playing lights out as of late, and the Pinstripers trust they can keep it up without Fried, especially with Rodon joining the group.

If New York truly couldn’t afford Fried’s absence, it wouldn’t have sent him on the IL. Instead, the Yanks are confident the rest of the rotation can hold it down in the meantime.

As for the batters, well, it’s been a completely different story, and a grim one at that. Bleak outing after bleak outing, the Yankees miss Bellinger, Judge and Stanton, and may have no choice but to rush one of them back in hopes of striking a spark into a deflated dugout. The starting pitchers may enjoy some rest luxuries, which they have earned. The rest of the squad hasn’t.

Apparently, the New York Yankees can't enjoy nice things. As Carlos Rodon is set to make his long-awaited return in the 2026 MLB season, adversity has struck Max Fried.

When it rains, it pours for the New York Yankees. And just when the rain stops, it comes crashing down once again. Amid the joy for watching Carlos Rodon gear up for his first MLB game since late June, the Pinstripers announced Max Fried will now miss time.

“Today, the Yankees placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 8/14) with a left elbow bone bruise,” the team announced on its social media.

In true, yet extremely cruel, “an eye for an eye” fashion, the Yankees lose a left-handed starting pitcher as they activate another in Rodon. Fans knew the Bronx Bombers would have to make a roster move to accommodate Rodon, but not many expected to lose Fried in the process.

The 2026 MLB season has been truly testing, and it wasted no time proving Aaron Boone’s “incomplete” description of the Yankees true once again.

Starting pitcher Carlos Rodon #55 of the New York Yankees.

Fried and Rodon’s numbers in 2026

Through 15 games in the 2026 MLB season, Fried has posted a 2.81 ERA and a 2.8 WAR. Moreover, he has 86.1 innings pitched, 79 strikeouts, and a 0.996 WHIP. Fried had helped New York establish arguably the most dominant starting rotation in the American League.

As for Rodon, as he gears up to start against the Baltimore Orioles, he hopes to pick up right where he left off and turn it up a notch during the 2026 MLB campaign. Rodon has pitched 46.1 innings, striking out 52 opponents and posting a 1.252 WHIP. Moreover, his ERA on the season is 3.30, with a 0.7 WAR.

NY Yankees’ starting rotation

With Rodon coming off rehab and Fried headed to the injured list, the Yankees have witnessed their rotation shake up in the blink of an eye. Cy Young Award favorite Cam Schlittler and Gerrit Cole will still command the top of the depth chart.

However, they are both right-handed, and with Fried out for at least a couple of weeks, that leaves Ryan Weathers and Carlos Rodon in prime position to run away with the main LHP job. With Clarke Schmidt out as well, the last starting option is RHP Will Warren.

Needless to say, the Yankees have been through enough adversity all year long. There might be more where that came from, so the Bronx Bombers must buckle up for a bumpy ride. In more ways than one, this is their Odyssey.

Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees hit a major snag with Max Fried's latest injury update, as the left-hander underwent preliminary X-rays to determine the severity of the damage.
After the happiness for Gerrit Cole’s season debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, the good vibes in the Bronx were abruptly halted on Monday. The New York Yankees and their fan base were awaiting the return of Cole, but manager Aaron Boone quickly dampened the mood by delivering a concerning injury update on another key piece of the rotation, Max Fried.

The Yankees‘ recently acquired co-ace suffered an injury a couple of weeks ago, and Boone revealed to reporters on Monday that Fried’s latest elbow X-rays offered little reason for optimism. “There’s nothing really that would say he can start the ramp-up process yet,” Boone said, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post.

The discouraging update means fans will have to wait even longer to see Cole and Fried anchoring the rotation together, a dream scenario delayed since Cole was sidelined with an injury ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Despite the rotation setback, the Yankees are already looking toward the summer trade deadline, with rumors swirling regarding their potential interest in Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. In the meantime, New York is focused on maintaining its momentum ahead of the midseason mark; the Bronx Bombers currently sit at 31-22 after grinding out a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Sunday’s series finale.

Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees pitches.

Fried injury update on perspective

The setback for Fried throws a massive wrench into the Yankees’ pitching plans. Acquired to form a devastating one-two punch alongside Cole, the left-hander’s halted rehabilitation process means the New York bullpen will continue to shoulder a heavy burden.

With Boone offering no definitive timetable for Fried to restart his throwing program, team doctors are reportedly expected to re-evaluate the elbow in the coming days to determine, according to Boone, if structural damage requires a more aggressive treatment plan.

Yankees trade deadline rumors

With Fried sidelined and Cole still working his way back to game shape, General Manager Brian Cashman is expected to be highly aggressive ahead of the July 31 deadline, according to some analysts on ESPN.

If the Bronx Bombers want to sustain their current 31-22 pace and solidify themselves as true World Series contenders, pulling off a blockbuster move for a frontline starter like Skubal may shift from a luxury to an absolute necessity.

NY Yankees’ Max Fried forced out of start vs. Orioles: Potential injury details and replacement options

Max Fried made an abrupt exit from today’s matchup against the Baltimore Orioles, leaving the Yankees to evaluate the severity of the injury while scrambling for a mid-game replacement.
Making his latest start for the New York Yankees, Max Fried was forced into an early exit due to a potential injury, a development first reported by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. The southpaw’s departure has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the Yankees’ rotation, with the club now awaiting further word on his long-term status.

“Max Fried exited the game with left elbow posterior soreness, the Yankees announced. He will be examined by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad and undergo imaging tomorrow in New York,“ Hoch posted to his X account regarding the veteran’s abrupt departure.

Following the early exit, the Yankees turned to Paul Blackburn and Ryan Harborough, though the bullpen struggled to stabilize the game in Fried’s absence. All eyes are now on the results of tomorrow’s tests, as the Yankees’ pitching depth faces a massive test ahead of the remainder of the series and the highly anticipated Subway Series against the New York Mets.

The discomfort surfaced during the fourth inning, with Fried visibly favoring his arm before heading straight for the tunnel. The timing is particularly complicated for manager Aaron Boone, who had just clarified Jose Caballero’s long-term role despite Anthony Volpe’s much-anticipated season debut.

Max Fried went down into the tunnel after the third inning. Matt Blake immediately called down to the bullpen and got Paul Blackburn warming up pic.twitter.com/psiPvgmBE2
— Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) May 13, 2026

Fried struggles prior to injury exit

The Orioles’ offense made it clear that the pitcher didn’t matter, tagging both Fried and Blackburn early to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Before his abrupt departure, Fried’s performance was far from the dominant outing the Yankees had envisioned for their high-profile starter.

Fried’s final line was underwhelming: 3.0 innings pitched, five hits allowed, and three earned runs on 61 pitches. He managed just two strikeouts against one walk, leaving the Yankees in a hole and forcing the front office to reassess their pitching strategy for the grueling stretch ahead.

Ultimately, the Yankees dropped the series 2-1 to Baltimore, and the concern surrounding their rotation depth continues to mount. However, a silver lining may be on the horizon, as Boone suggested ace Gerrit Cole’s highly anticipated return to the mound could happen sooner than originally projected.

With Opening Day looming, manager Aaron Boone is still weighing his options for Luis Gil as the Yankees move closer to finalizing their 26-man roster.
Luis Gil’s status for the New York Yankees‘ Opening Day roster remains one of the final question marks of the spring. While manager Aaron Boone has solidified the core of his rotation, Gil’s specific role—or whether he starts the season in the Bronx at all—is still being debated.

With Max Fried slated to lead the charge on Opening Day, followed by Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers, the Yankees are weighing whether to use Gil as a “piggyback” long-relief option.

The decision likely hinges on roster math; as noted by Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, the Yankees might prefer the flexibility of an extra traditional reliever, making a Triple-A assignment for Gil the most probable outcome.

Spring performance and velocity surge

While six players have been in the mix for the final spots, Gil’s late-spring surge has made the decision difficult for Boone in the rotation.

All seven Luis Gil strikeouts from his five one-hit innings against the Orioles https://t.co/yrxVUgxPWh pic.twitter.com/M9SDlDdVad
— Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) March 20, 2026

Gil’s velocity was uncharacteristically low, sitting between 91–93 mph with inconsistent command. He flipped the script in his final spring start against the Orioles last Friday, touching 96–97 mph and debuting a heavy sinker that stifled hitters.

That uptick in power gives him a distinct edge over Schlittler or Weathers, both of whom have struggled to find their rhythm this spring. If the Yankees prioritize “stuff” over service time, Gil has a legitimate case for the flight to New York.

The road ahead

Regardless of the Opening Day decision, Gil’s 2026 debut is a matter of “when,” not “if.” The Yankees face a grueling stretch of 13 games in 13 days starting April 7, a period that almost certainly necessitates a spot-start or a move to a six-man rotation.

For now, Gil is scheduled to throw a live session in Tampa on Wednesday. Unless a late roster move materializes in the coming hours, he is expected to head to Triple-A to stay stretched out and ready for the inevitable call-up.

Among the veterans who addressed the media following the defeat, Max Fried confessed about the things that went wrong on the field. At the same time, he revealed the team’s strong mentality and determination to avoid being swept in the series.
Max Fried didn’t hold back after the New York Yankees’ 13-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 2, a defeat that left them trailing 0-2 in the series. The left-hander was tagged for seven runs in what turned into a disastrous outing in Canada. “They obviously had a really good approach, they were on a lot of my pitches. Credit to them, I didn’t get it done,” Fried admitted after the game.

Despite the rough performance, Fried refused to dwell on the loss, instead choosing to focus on the Yankees‘ response heading into Game 3. “We’re ready to go,” he said confidently. “Obviously we had a rough showing here, obviously we’d rather be up 2-0 than down 2-0, but we have a lot of faith in this club.”

Now the Yankees return home to Yankee Stadium, desperate to avoid a sweep and keep their postseason hopes alive. Fried made it clear that the group isn’t losing confidence despite the hole they’re in. “We just need to regroup and play our game,” he said, emphasizing that the team still believes it can turn the series around.

Fried’s struggles against the Blue Jays

Fried recorded his second official career loss against the Blue Jays, he now holds a 4-2 record in eight appearances against Toronto. According to StatMuse, his 7-run outing in Game 2 of the 2025 ALDS marks the worst defeat of his career. Despite that single-game low, he has struggled against Toronto all year, allowing a total of 11 runs in his four appearances for a 3.66 runs-per-game average.

Fried’s teammates maintain hope

Despite the crushing defeat, Fried’s teammates are not giving up. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and others have publicly stated that the Yankees can still turn the series around, which is precisely what Fried says they will aim to do back home.

Rookie Ben Rice also showed confidence, reminding reporters of their past resilience. “We did well with our backs against the wall against Boston and now we’re going to have to show we can do it again,” Rice said, confirming hope is still alive for a comeback against the Blue Jays.

The New York Yankees suffered a defeat in Game 1 at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, sparking speculation around head coach Aaron Boone's decision-making, particularly his choice of substitutions during the crucial final innings.
The night’s contest between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium took an unexpected turn due to managerial decisions. Initially, Max Fried was delivering an impressive performance, keeping the Yankees in the lead. However, in a surprising move, Yankees head coach Aaron Boone opted to send Fried to the bullpen, replacing him with Luke Weaver as the pitcher. This strategical shift stirred a dramatic change in the game’s momentum.

Luke Weaver struggled to find his rhythm on the mound, failing to deliver the crucial pitches needed to maintain the lead. The Red Sox capitalized on this opportunity, overturning the score to secure a victory by the game’s end. With the series standing at 1-0 in Boston’s favor and only the top team advancing from this best-of-three series to the next postseason round, the Yankees now find themselves in a precarious position.

Post-game, Fried spoke to the media to address questions surrounding his unexpected early departure. Responding to Boone’s choice to pull him from the game, Fried stated, “I definitely felt good at the end; I came off the field feeling strong.”

Fried further expressed his perspective on the decision, saying, “I’m going to stay in until they take the ball from me.” His comments highlight that the decision was out of his hands, a sentiment echoed by fans across social media platforms, who questioned the strategic move that seemingly allowed the Red Sox to reverse the score.

Fried reflects on early exit

Fried faced a significant challenge on the mound as he went up against the relentless lineup of the Red Sox. Despite the pressure exerted by the opposing batters, Fried remained unflustered, addressing questions about whether he could have continued his outing.

“I definitely exerted a lot of energy trying to get out of that, but I had enough in the tank for whatever the team needed,” Fried stated to the media, reflecting on the critical moment when he was pulled from the game and replaced by Weaver.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained his decision to remove Max Fried after 102 pitches in the Wild Card opener against the Boston Red Sox, a move that quickly backfired in New York’s Game 1 loss.
The New York Yankees’ postseason debut for Max Fried started with brilliance but ended with second-guessing. In Game 1 of the Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox, the left-hander showcased dominance early before manager Aaron Boone made a pivotal decision that quickly turned the tide.

Fried breezed through the opening three innings, limiting Boston to just two hits while striking out Jaren Duran in a key spot. But as the game wore on, the Red Sox lineup began to chip away, forcing the Yankees’ ace to expend extra energy in high-pressure jams during the middle frames.

Still, the veteran lefty managed to navigate traffic on the bases, getting Alex Bregman to ground out with two men aboard in the fifth and inducing an inning-ending double play in the sixth. At 102 pitches, Fried believed he still had something left.

Boone explains the decision

Boone allowed Fried to begin the seventh against Duran, who grounded out quickly, but then turned to the bullpen. The move immediately backfired. Luke Weaver surrendered three straight baserunners, capped by a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run single from Masataka Yoshida. Boston added another run later against David Bednar, and that seventh inning ultimately sealed the Yankees’ 5–3 loss in the opener.

Despite the outcome, Boone defended his call after the game. “He gave us what we needed,” Boone said, according to SNY. “They pressured him pretty good in the fourth, fifth, sixth. Had a couple of baserunners in each inning. Felt like he kind of cruised through the first few and ends up pitching great, but had to work pretty hard there.”

Looking ahead with Rodon

Boone also clarified that the plan was largely predetermined. “I was going to have the sixth be the end — after we finished with the double play, I wanted him to go out and get Duran and felt like we were lined up pretty well from there,” he explained.

This year, things have gone quite well for Max Fried personally, but he was very clear about what the real objective is with the New York Yankees in a message that could be a warning to the other playoff teams.
Max Fried has been everything the New York Yankees hoped for in his first year in pinstripes. The left-hander has delivered a career-best season, posting 19 wins, 5 losses, 32 starts, a 2.86 ERA, and 189 strikeouts. The 19 wins mark the most in his nine-year MLB career, a milestone he never reached during his time with the Atlanta Braves.

Despite the personal success, Fried made it clear that the focus isn’t on his individual numbers. “Not finished yet. It’s been very apparent that the goal of this team is to go to the playoffs, get deep in the playoffs and win the World Series,” he said. His mindset remains locked on October rather than personal accolades.

Fried added that he prioritizes Yankees success above all else. “I like to put a lot of team goals in front of how I individually do,” he explained. “If we come out and go deep in the playoffs and win a World Series, then I’ll say it was pretty successful, but we got a long way to go.”

The Best of the Yankees

Max Fried is the best pitcher the Yankees have this season, at least in terms of his 2.86 ERA—no other starter is below the 3.00 mark. He has been highly efficient for the team despite having one fewer start than Carlos Rodón, with 33 starts total.

"Max has been tremendous for us. What a first year as a Yankee."

Carlos Rodón talks about the Yankees' rotation and Max Fried's first year in the Bronx: pic.twitter.com/IbDl8NSBhk
— Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) September 26, 2025

Rodón gave high praise for his rotation mate, saying, “Max has been tremendous for us. What a first year as a Yankee.” He suggested that without Fried, the team wouldn’t have gotten this far and that his presence will be necessary in the playoffs.

Manager Aaron Boone echoed that sentiment: “Just everything you would want from a guy at the top of your rotation. He’s just such a pro, so talented, such a great teammate, such an important part of our pitching culture now here. Navigated the season so well.”
