“We know it’s here (spark). I don’t know if it’s getting to know one another more now because it’s official games. I don’t know if it’s jitters. You know a little bit nervous. New season. I don’t know what it is. Sometimes you gotta shock the team, and this is what we are going through right now,” he revealed to the press.

“We had two games in our building that we were we definitely shocked. I feel like you know you kind of raise the the level of urgency for everybody. We have to be better. It starts with myself always. Anything I say, it’s I always start for myself. I have to be better. I have to set the tone. I have to be more urgent…”

Erik Spoelstra brought in several key players to his roster to compete toe-to-toe in the Eastern Conference. So far, the level of play and team chemistry he’s looking for have been nowhere to be found.

Giannis’ numbers in his first two games

Giannis Antetokounmpo hit the ground running individually in his first two regular-season games with the Miami Heat, even though the team stumbled to an 0-2 start. The Greek Freak dropped a total of 71 points across those two contests—scoring 35 points (13-for-19 FG, 6 rebounds) in his Heat debut against Minnesota and following it up with a monster 36-point, 12-rebound, 5-assist, and 2-steal double-double against Detroit.

Overall, he’s averaging 35.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists while shooting a blazing 62.2% from the field, proving that his transition to South Beach is off to a dominant start despite Miami’s early defensive struggles.

Starting the comeback in Charlotte

The Heat hit the road tonight, Saturday, October 24, to face the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center. After that, they head back to South Florida for a marquee home game at Kaseya Center against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, October 26, before traveling north to take on the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on Wednesday, October 28.

Key takeaways

• Giannis Antetokounmpo took responsibility for the Miami Heat’s early season struggles.
• Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 71 points across his first two games with Miami.
• The Miami Heat face the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, October 24.

“A player on [the Heat] bench was talking trash… And then when I started talking to him, he didn’t really have too much more to say… If you gonna talk s***, keep talkin s***. Don’t get quiet,” Edwards told reporters after the game.

Extracurriculars aside, the primary goal for the Wolves was starting the 2026-27 NBA season on the right foot. Following a preseason centered around integrating key offseason additions alongside Edwards, newcomers like LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga proved they are already locked in and ready for the grueling campaign ahead.

Much like Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic dealing with on-court chatter from Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, Edwards finding himself in the crosshairs of the Heat bench proves there is never a shortage of players trying to rattle top-tier stars.

Edwards leads a Minnesota offensive clinic that exposed Heat weaknesses

Minnesota poured in 21 three-pointers on 42% shooting, fueled by Anthony Edwards’ 45-point explosion and nine triples. Miami’s point-of-attack defenders were repeatedly blown past or screened out, forcing scramble-heavy backcourt rotations that gave Minnesota’s guards uncontested looks throughout the entire second half.

Interior rebounding and paint protection also emerged as glaring vulnerabilities for Miami. The Timberwolves utterly dominated the glass 52–34, snatching 17 offensive rebounds that led to relentless second-chance opportunities. With Bam Adebayo frequently pulled away from the basket to hedge high pick-and-rolls, Rudy Gobert and the Minnesota frontcourt ruthlessly punished Miami’s lack of secondary length in the post.

To make matters worse, the loss exposed a troubling lack of floor spacing and transition defense beyond Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 35-point Miami debut. The Heat sputtered from deep, hitting just 8-of-33 (24.2%) from three-point range, which allowed Minnesota to pack the paint and completely wall off driving lanes.

Key takeaways

• Anthony Edwards called out a Miami Heat bench player for talking trash.
• Minnesota hit 21 three-pointers while Anthony Edwards exploded for 45 points.
• Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points in his Miami Heat debut.

Trading a player of Antetokounmpo’s stature and one under contract may make little sense, but the Bucks didn’t really have much of a choice. Although Giannis didn’t publicly request a trade, reports state he and his camp pressured Milwaukee to trade him away, and the Heat were always circling around him, waiting for the moment to pounce.

Much has been said over the years about Miami’s front office with Pat Riley’s refusal to go after NBA stars and complete blockbuster trades. At one point, he had enough. The Heat went nuclear, sending virtually every single chip they owned to the Bucks to acquire Antetokounmpo. The main reason why the Bucks were pressured to trade Anteokounmpo before the 2026-27 NBA season is because they would’ve been playing him on a contract year if not.

Giannis would’ve entered contract year

Signed to a three-year extension, Giannis’ deal runs through the 2027-28 campaign, but only if the Greek-Nigerian star says so. Next offseason, Antetokounmpo has a player option and could become an unrestricted free agent if he declines to exercise it.

That meant Milwaukee either traded him, or risked losing him to free agency. Based on everything the Bucks got in return for Giannis, it’s safe to say they made the right choice.

Giannis’ trade to the Heat

Antetokounmpo wasn’t sent to Miami on his own; he was joined by Bobby Portis, who was also traded by the Bucks to the Heat. In return, the Bucks received Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (2026, 2031, and 2033), a pick swap in 2030, and a second-round pick in 2033, as reported by ESPN.

Key takeaways

• Giannis Antetokounmpo traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat before the 2026-27 season.
• Player option next offseason allows Antetokounmpo to become an unrestricted free agent by declining it.
• Bucks acquired four players plus four future draft selections and a 2030 pick swap.

“Just play it smart,” Adebayo said, according to The Miami Herald. “Obviously, I want to be out there. But it’s one of those things where they tried to save me from myself. Other than that, I should be ready to go Wednesday.”

Erik Spoelstra is also facing some uncertainty regarding Pelle Larsson’s status. The guard has been dealing with an illness over the past few weeks, but all indications suggest he will be available for the season opener.

“That’s the plan right now,” Larsson said of playing Wednesday. “That’s how we’ve been setting it up, kind of planning it out not to go too fast is just don’t rush for the last preseason game. Just focus on the regular season.”

What injury is Bam Adebayo dealing with?

Heat fans were holding their breath when Bam Adebayo popped up on the injury report with right groin tightness, forcing him to sit out Miami’s final two preseason games. Rather than risking any further aggravation, the medical staff took a super cautious approach and kept their star big man sidelined to ensure he’d be at 100% for when the games actually count.

Heat’s first challenges of the season

The Miami Heat kick off their 2026–27 regular season with a two-game homestand at the Kaseya Center, tipping off opening night against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, October 21. They stay in South Florida for their second matchup on Friday, October 23, hosting the Detroit Pistons.

To round out their opening slate, the Heat head on the road for the first time in a back-to-back, traveling to the Spectrum Center to take on the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, October 24.

Key takeaways

• Bam Adebayo stated he expects to be ready for Wednesday’s season opener.
• Pelle Larsson plans to return for the opener after dealing with an illness.
• The Miami Heat open their season against the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 21.

Both Edwards and Antetokounmpo are expected to suit up for Minnesota and Miami, respectively. The exhibition should also offer critical rotational minutes for several young players eager to prove they belong in an NBA rotation.

While Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy recently addressed why his front office opted out of the offseason Giannis sweepstakes, the “Greek Freak” has remained focused on preparing for his Heat debut against the Timberwolves.

With Edwards entering the year primed to solidify his standing as the unquestioned face of the franchise, Minnesota enters the 2026-27 campaign looking to build on last year’s deep postseason run.

Predicted lineups for Heat and Timberwolves

With Edwards and Antetokounmpo anchoring their respective starting units, all eyes will be on how the supporting casts mesh early in preseason action. Here are the projected starting lineups for tonight’s matchup:

Minnesota Timberwolves

• SG Anthony Edwards
• SF Jonathan Kuminga
• PG LaMelo Ball
• PF Jaden McDaniels
• C Rudy Gobert

Miami Heat

• SG Klay Thompson
• SF Andrew Wiggins
• PG Davion Mitchell
• PF Giannis Antetokounmpo
• C Bam Adebayo

With a regular-season opening rematch set for Oct. 21, tonight’s tune-up provides an essential early look at where both rosters stand ahead of the games that count.

Key takeaways

• Miami and Minnesota play their 2026 NBA preseason opener today, Oct. 10.
• Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards are expected to play in today’s exhibition.
• Both teams feature in an Oct. 21 opening night regular-season rematch.

Former NBA All-Star Zach Randolph believes Westbrook may not be done with basketball despite announcing his retirement earlier this summer. Speaking on the Out the Mud Podcast, Randolph said Westbrook retired too early and argued that the veteran guard still has several productive years left in him. Randolph also named the Miami Heat as a team he would like to see Westbrook join if he decides to return.

“This man is supposed to be in the league for another 3-4 years at least. I’d like to see him with the Heat. Brodie got a lot left in him. I just saw his little brother yesterday Ray. He might be back,” Randolph said.

Westbrook could be a strong option for the Heat

For Miami to establish itself as a top team in the Eastern Conference this season, it still probably needs to add more talent. Either that or seeing players like Pelle Larsson, Ryan Conwell, and Nikola Jovic solidify rotation spots. However, as an attractive destination with a chance to contend if all goes well, the Heat acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson. Despite roster-building restrictions, this sufficiently addressed concerns about their shooting.

Westbrook does not provide much shooting. However, he is coming off a campaign in which he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. He is a chaos engine who can still stuff the stat sheet.

Adding a new dynamic like that will help when Antetokounmpo is not on the floor or in the lineup. The two-time scoring champion would also allow the Heat to keep pressuring the rim without their new star forward in the game.

If Westbrook is going to return this NBA season, Miami is the ideal landing spot. He would not have a superstar or lead role as he did with the Kings, but he would undoubtedly be a valuable player coming off the bench.

Key takeaways

• Russell Westbrook is linked to the Miami Heat despite retiring in the 2026 offseason.
• Zach Randolph advocated for an NBA comeback during a podcast appearance.
• 15.2 points and 6.7 assists were averaged during his prior campaign.

As Thompson looks for a redemption season with the Heat after an up-and-down tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, the four-time champion got real about the famed culture surrounding his new team. Speaking with Jonathan Zaslow, Thompson was asked about “Heat Culture” and how he viewed it as an outside observer.

“There’s a reason that their guys overachieve a lot of times, or they embrace the pressure that comes with championship expectations,” Thompson said. “So that’s what attracted me here is… all of my friends who have played here talk about how demanding it is and how your fitness will be the best it’s ever been, and honestly, at this stage in my career, that’s what was so attractive.”

Competitive environment in Miami

On Tuesday, the Heat formally introduced Thompson, who joins star big men Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo to give both centers the exact type of elite shooter needed to complement their play. Reflecting on the environment established by team president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra, Thompson expressed his drive to continue building his career legacy.

“I want to be in an environment that’s super competitive, and guys might get uncomfortable at times, I love that,” Thompson said. “I get a whole new jolt of energy when I walk in this building, seeing the photos on the wall of all their championship runs, of the great Hall of Famers who played here, and it just gives me motivation to add a new chapter to my legacy. And I’m just honored to see No. 11 Thompson in a Heat uniform. It’s really surreal, to be honest.”

A winning culture made Miami tempting for Thompson, but the mutual fit ran just as deep. The Heat had an opportunity to sign scorer DeMar DeRozan to the same contract offer presented to Thompson.

However, Miami prioritized securing both an elite shooter and a player with a proven winning reputation. Thompson brings four NBA titles from his time with the Golden State Warriors, where he served as arguably the second-most important player for that legendary dynasty run.

The resulting fan backlash on social media has reached a fever pitch, particularly after the Warriors officially announced the low-profile offseason signings of role players Georges Niang and Brandon Williams.

Dismayed supporters flooded online forums to vent their frustration, with fans posting comments like “Steph should do himself a favor and request a trade,” “I thought we were landing a superstar,” and “This front office is becoming a major problem.” Dub Nation remains deeply skeptical about how the roster will fare in the upcoming campaign.

Meanwhile, Thompson has already publicly expressed his excitement about teaming up with Giannis in South Beach, and the 76ers are finalizing logistics for LeBron‘s upcoming introductory press conference in Philadelphia.

A passive offseason leaves Golden State vulnerable

What hurts most for the fanbase is Golden State’s striking inertia. With Jimmy Butler still rehabbing from injury, Draymond Green departing the franchise, and Stephen Curry’s long-term future shrouded in uncertainty, the Warriors risk tumbling into NBA irrelevance before training camp even opens.

While rival contenders aggressively re-tooled through high-profile trades and free agency, Golden State’s primary responses to their roster exodus were Niang (via the Atlanta Hawks) and Williams (via the Dallas Mavericks).

At this stage, faithful supporters are no longer expecting a return to the dynasty years. Instead, they are simply hoping this patchwork group can stay competitive enough to scramble into the Western Conference playoff picture.

According to Basketball Ground, Miami is framing a potential blockbuster deal to acquire Irving. In exchange, the Dallas Mavericks would receive a youth-and-draft package headlined by Nikola Jovic and Pelle Larsson, alongside a 2028 first-round pick, a 2029 second-round pick, and an unprotected 2030 first-round selection.

Despite rampant speculation, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the Mavericks have no immediate plans to place Irving on the trade block. With the franchise laser-focused on building a contender around rookie phenom Cooper Flagg, front-office leadership sees no reason to rush a deal.

Because Irving carries a massive cap hit near $39.5 million, executing a salary-matching trade under NBA collective bargaining agreement rules would force the Heat to gut core rotation pieces—including key contributors like Andrew Wiggins—along with essential role players and valuable draft capital.

The Heat face financial restrictions, like operating tight against second-apron hard caps, limiting the franchise’s ability to absorb high-salary veterans without shedding significant assets or taking back unwanted contracts in return.

Would Irving actually make sense for the Heat at this stage of their timeline?

Integrating Irving into head coach Erik Spoelstra’s scheme would instantly elevate Miami’s half-court shot creation. Renowned for his dynamic late-clock execution, the eight-time All-Star provides the exact high-leverage scoring needed to cure the Heat’s routine offensive lulls.

In an hypothetical scenario, if the pursuit materializes, Irving would join a re-engineered roster that already landed superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee earlier this summer. Together, the high-profile moves have reignited title expectations across South Beach for a franchise hungry to return to the top of the NBA mountain.

His gravity as a pull-up shooter would unlock critical floor spacing for paint-dominant stars Bam Adebayo and Antetokounmpo. Furthermore, running a central pick-and-roll with Irving and Adebayo would instantly give Miami one of the most lethal two-man actions in the Eastern Conference.

Projected Heat starting lineup with Irving

If Miami manages to pull off the trade, Irving would slot directly into what suddenly looks like one of the most formidable starting units in the league. Here is how the Heat’s projected starting five would stack up with Irving running point:

• PG: Kyrie Irving
• SG: Klay Thompson
• SF: Andrew Wiggins
• PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo
• C: Bam Adebayo

During his introductory press conference, Thompson was asked about playing alongside Antetokounmpo and offered nothing but high praise. “Giannis is one of the best players of all time… I think we both can just help each other,” Thompson said. “I’m going to get so many great looks playing off him and Bam.”

The pairing presents a strong complementary dynamic. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo rank among the top players at attacking the paint and will likely attract double teams, freeing up open spaces for Thompson to capitalize on, and vice versa.

Klay’s redemption season

Thompson made it clear that the upcoming campaign serves as a redemption season, expressing his desire to demonstrate that he can still play at the highest level and serve as a key contributor despite performing below his usual standard in recent years.

“It’s kind of a redemption season for me to show that I can still make an impact on winning … I still think I can do it at a high level,” Thompson said. “We have no limit to where we can go, that’s it. I’m eager to make it happen. Walking into that gym in Miami, seeing that jersey… it gave me joy and energy to be that Klay again.”

An ambitious decision by Thompson

Thompson arrives in Miami driven to win, even demonstrating his commitment financially by accepting less money than expected to taste victory again and contend for an NBA championship.

“Just the opportunity to play high-level basketball throughout the season and the chance to make a deep postseason run,” Thompson said. “Those things were so attractive to me. I’ve tasted winning before and there’s really nothing like it.”

On Monday, Thompson was all smiles as he arrived in South Beach to begin the new chapter in his illustrious career. “My joints just feel good being out here with this climate,” Thompson said.

“I can’t wait to meet the staff, my co-workers, the executives, try new cuisines, get some really good local food, and get to work. I was always here in passing, so it’s nice to be planted, just being able to experience a great place.”

An intriguing destination

After an empty two-year stint with the Mavericks, Thompson made it known that he wanted to join a championship contender and chase a fifth ring. The Heat became an ideal destination, especially with the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Miami provides a city well-suited to what Thompson is looking for, backed by a fanbase that ranks among the best in the NBA — a crowd atmosphere he was accustomed to receiving in Golden State at Chase Center and Oracle Arena.

Although leg injuries have hampered the four-time champion’s performance, he remains a valuable player who can still knock down eight 3-pointers on any given night. Head coach Erik Spoelstra has a proven track record of getting the most out of long-range shooters — with Ray Allen, Duncan Robinson, and Max Strus serving as prime examples — meaning Thompson should have no trouble adapting to the system.

As a fierce competitor, Thompson is eager to bounce back following a down NBA season last year in which he averaged career lows of 11.7 points, 39.3% shooting from the field, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 21.7 minutes per game off the bench.
