Sherrone Moore’s Michigan Wolverines traveled to California and suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of the USC Trojans.
The Michigan Wolverines‘ West Coast trip was anything but satisfying—not just because of another tough loss, this time against USC, but also due to the underwhelming performance from Sherrone Moore‘s squad.

Only time will tell just how costly this setback truly is—especially if it ends up impacting the Wolverines’ hopes of making a long-awaited run to the College Football Playoff.

Moore, true to his style, remained energetic and vocal despite his team’s struggles against the Trojans—a performance clearly outmatched by their opponent and one that left the Wolverines unable to find answers at any point during the game.

“They played really well; they executed the times they needed to,” Moore said, via 247 Sports. “We didn’t. We didn’t tackle very well. We’ve tackled a lot better, and that was not one of our best tackling performances… We work tackling every day and we didn’t execute. We didn’t tackle when we needed to, and they did a good job.”

Bouncing back quickly from defeat

The sting of a decisive road loss to USC has little time to linger in Ann Arbor, as the Michigan Wolverines must execute a rapid emotional and physical recovery before the next Saturday.

Coach Sherrone Moore’s squad faces a critical test against the Washington Huskies in a high-profile home game at The Big House. After being pushed around by the Trojans’ running game, the Wolverines’ defense must find its elite form immediately, while the offense needs to clean up its execution. The College Football Playoff path is now razor-thin, and a victory over the Huskies is absolutely non-negotiable to keep their national title hopes alive.

In the sprawling saga of college football, a handful of programs have carved out legacies that stretch far beyond the scoreboard. These institutions have become synonymous with dominance, tradition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

From the maize-and-blue mystique of Michigan to the southern swagger of Alabama, the sport’s most decorated teams have built empires on talent and a knack for rewriting history. Their stories are stitched into the fabric of Saturdays across America.

But greatness isn’t just measured in wins. It’s found in Heisman moments, packed stadiums, and decades of sustained brilliance. As the dust settles on another season, the numbers begin to speak—and some names echo louder than others.

25. Grambling State Tigers

Despite being undersized for a defensive tackle, his speed, intelligence, and determination made him a formidable force on the field. He was a unanimous First-Team All-American in 1988 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022.

He was a four-year starter for the Wolverines, setting an offensive line record with 48 consecutive starts. He was a two-time All-American and a two-time Big Ten Lineman of the Year. As a senior in 2004, he was awarded the Rimington Trophy, given to the nation’s top center, and was a consensus All-American. He was also a finalist for the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Award.

He was a three-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection and played a crucial role in Michigan’s offensive line during his tenure. After college, he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft, where he continued to excel at the professional level.

Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines have secured the commitment of Savion Hiter for the 2026 college football season.
College football is just about to kick off a new season, but many programs are already looking ahead to the future. That’s the case for the Michigan Wolverines, who, under head coach Sherrone Moore, have secured a commitment from Savion Hiter.

One of the most promising running backs turned down a long list of offers before ultimately choosing to commit to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines’ offense is beginning to take shape — and it’s shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with.

Once the player’s decision was confirmed, the program itself announced the news on social media. Hiter, through his official X account (formerly Twitter), shared a brief message expressing his excitement about the commitment.

“I’M HOME,” the 5-star recruit stated via @5starsavi. Even with plenty of time to plan what’s next, Sherrone Moore knows he has a ton of untapped potential to unleash.

Michigan above the rest

After an intense recruitment battle, five-star running back Savion Hiter has officially committed to the Michigan Wolverines, spurning offers from perennial powerhouses like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State. His decision is a significant win for head coach Sherrone Moore and his staff, securing a dynamic talent who many project to be a cornerstone of the team’s future offense.

Hiter’s commitment to Michigan, despite the relentless pursuit from some of the nation’s elite programs, signals the program’s continued strength in recruiting and its ability to attract top-tier prospects from across the country.

The reasons behind Hiter’s decision

Savion Hiter made the important decision to commit to the Wolverines program, driven by a specific reason that ultimately brought him to Ann Arbor. In a recent conversation with The Athletic, the running back praised the program’s running game. “They run the ball a lot,” he said.

Sherrone Moore’s Michigan Wolverines will kick off the new college football season under a significant sanction, the result of the ongoing sign-stealing scandal.
One of the most high-profile scandals in recent college football history involved the Michigan Wolverines and the alleged stealing of both offensive and defensive signals from opposing teams. The storied program, which recently won a national championship under Jim Harbaugh, received an unprecedented ruling against it — a decision that also implicates current head coach Sherrone Moore.

The 2023 National Championship Game, in which the Wolverines convincingly defeated the Washington Huskies 34–13, was preceded by serious allegations that the team had been involved in signal stealing — accusations centered around former staff analyst Connor Stalions.

In response to the situation, the authorities have officially announced the punishment for the program — a decision that was first reported by college football insider Pete Thamel via his official account on X (formerly Twitter).

Among the most notable penalties are not only financial sanctions, but also individual punishments handed down to Moore, Harbaugh, and Stalions. Sherrone Moore received a two-year show-cause order, during which he is suspended for a total of three games. Jim Harbaugh was given a 10-year show-cause penalty, and Connor Stalions was issued an eight-year show-cause order, restricting him from participating in any athletically related activities throughout that period.

What happened with the Wolverines?

In one of the biggest stories of the college football offseason, the NCAA has levied a series of historic penalties against the Michigan Wolverines stemming from the sign-stealing scandal that rocked their national championship season.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/sherrone-moore-makes-clear-when-hell-announce-the-wolverines-starting-qb" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250812_BUS_471116_sherrone-moore.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Sherrone Moore's Michigan Wolverines will look to establish themselves as serious title contenders in the upcoming college football season.

The investigation found that former analyst Connor Stalions orchestrated a comprehensive in-person scouting network, a violation of NCAA rules. As a result, Michigan has been hit with a massive fine, reportedly exceeding $20 million, along with a four-year probation period.

Additionally, former head coach Jim Harbaugh received a 10-year show-cause order, while current coach Sherrone Moore and Stalions were also handed significant suspensions and penalties. While the Wolverines avoided a postseason ban, the sanctions are a stark reminder of the long-term repercussions of the scandal.

Yaxel Lendeborg was one of the most sought-after players by several programs in College Basketball, and ultimately, the forward made the decision to commit to the Wolverines, meaning he will no longer be a player for UAB next season.

The news was shared via the official On3Sports account on X (formerly Twitter), where Lendeborg’s final decision to join May’s team and leave Birmingham was officially announced.

“BREAKING: UAB star transfer forward Yaxel Lendeborg has committed to Michigan, @DraftExpress reports,” it was announced on social media.

Jonathan Givony, ESPN reporter, added details about the forward’s basketball background: “Yaxel Lendeborg has a very unique backstory. An avid gamer, he played only 11 varsity high school games and was essentially forced to move across the country to a JUCO in Arizona by his mother, after standing out in an exposure camp for Dominican players in New York.”

The reasons behind Lendeborg’s decision

Lendeborg is one of the top prospects in the sport right now, with some even projecting him as a future NBA player. His arrival at the Wolverines has a primary reason, which the player himself made clear to the press.

“I love the culture Dusty May has brought to every team that he’s coached,” Lendeborg said, per ESPN. “When I first started watching college basketball, it was FAU.”

In addition, he expressed his intentions to take confident steps in his career and to go to places where he truly has the opportunity to showcase all his talent on the court.

“Make sure I am in a good spot. I would prefer to play college basketball in Ann Arbor than be in and out of the G League on a two-way. I want to find a safe spot,” the forward added.

Lendeborg’s early steps

The arrival of the former UAB player to the Wolverines marks a significant step in his career. It was he himself who, in statements to the press, explained how his journey unfolded to reach this point in his sport.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball/march-madness-winners-the-evolution-of-ncaa-mens-basketball-champions-from-1939-to-today" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250307_BUS_350393_NCAA.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Explore the evolution of champions, from pioneers in 1939 to modern legends, in a saga of passion, innovation and unforgettable moments that transformed college basketball and March Madness.

“I was more into video games than basketball for most of my life,” Lendeborg said. “I would play 19 hours a day, it was a religion for me. I wasn’t the best student. My mom forced me to get on a plane to Arizona. That was the best thing that ever happened to me. I went from there to UAB, where Andy Kennedy was a father figure for me. This past summer was really the first time I ever had a real organized workout plan. I’m just scratching the surface on the player I can evolve into, and with more work I can reach that potential.”

The freshman guard led his team from start to finish, never giving the Wolverines a chance to get into the game.
Unlike Matt Rhule, Michigan Wolverines HC Sherrone Moore plans to play Spring Games as originally scheduled.
There’s still plenty of time before the new NCAAF season kicks off, but controversies are already making headlines. Matt Rhule, head coach of the Cornhuskers, was one of the first to speak out against playing Spring Games, a stance that has drawn both supporters and critics. Michigan Wolverines HC Sherrone Moore was firm in expressing his program’s stance on the event.

In recent comments published on On3.com, the Wolverines’ head coach expressed his support for playing these types of games as preparation for the tough season ahead in College Football.

“I want to keep our spring game, and it’s just going to depend on circumstances how we can get it done,” Moore firmly stated to the press. “It’s an opportunity for our players, especially the guys that don’t get to play on those Saturdays, to be in front of a crowd and be in front of people.”

If everything goes according to plan, Michigan will make its offseason debut on April 19. Still, the coach insists on playing these types of games despite the risks involved.

Michigan Wolverines at Washington Huskies OCT 05 October 05, 2024: Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore before the NCAA Football game between the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies in Seattle, WA.

“And I know the risk — people are going to poach your players,” Moore also added. “People are going to do that regardless. People shop players. I don’t think the spring game is going to make a big difference in whether your guys get poached or not. We got to do a great job continuing the relationships we have with our players so that we can keep the ones we got and we want. We’ll take it day by day, and we’ll go from there.”

Matt Rhule’s opinion on Spring Games

The experienced head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Matt Rhule, was one of the main proponents against playing Spring Games. He was joined by several voices from College Football, arguing that it was unnecessary to expose players to such events given the physical risks and the long regular-season schedule.

“I think it was two things, last year we had our spring game, Big Ten Network, everyone is watching and it’s re-aired, re-aired, re-aired and all of a sudden I’ve got a line outside my door on Monday,” Rhule said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

“Coach so and so called me from here, so and so called me from there. What advantage is it for me? I love our fans and we’re going to do something for the fans, but what’s the advantage of showing all my young talent and letting other coaches come in and tamper with them?”

Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule talks with the line judge in action during a NCAA, College League, USA Division 1 football game between Northwestern Wildcats and the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE.

Additionally, Coach Rhule had previously shared the main reasons behind his decision to cancel the event: “When you think about the risk/reward when we’re paying players already,” the HC said. “Then with the portal kind of in the Spring with some guys who graduated. I was watching those FCS playoffs. I was watching Montana State and a guy made a big block… I’m like who is that?

“They’re like he’s already going here, he’s going here. It’s just you’re showcasing your players, So with no contracts, the day we get contracts and the day we get some rules I’ll back off. But I saw firsthand last year how much it put us at risk and I’m not really willing to do that. I think we keep as many guys as we can for the Fall.”
