“We want to be more consistent running the football,” Vrabel said, per MassLive’s Karen Guregian. “This isn’t like we’re going to run it every single play. It’s just that I felt like there were too many times where we wanted to run it, and it was just inefficient.

“Now we popped some, which was great. We had some explosives. … But I want to be able to do it more consistently to allow for some of the run actions in the passing game to really come alive. It’s a tough league if you have to sit there and drop back and throw the football as much as we did in the last game of the season.”

The Patriots were sixth in rushing yards in the regular season and ranked 13th in yards per attempt. Definitely, Vrabel will have a lot of work ahead if he wants to improve these statistics.

Two key rushers for New England

According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, a top executive from the franchise stated that Philadelphia wants a first- and second-round pick for the former Ole Miss Rebels standout.

His time in Tennessee linked him with Mike Vrabel, now the head coach of the Patriots. Will New England be willing to pay what the Eagles are asking for Brown, or will they instead try to negotiate to lower those demands?

Searching for an elite receiver

After Stefon Diggs was released by Patriots earlier this month due to a significant salary cap hit, New England has shifted its focus toward acquiring a true elite playmaker for quarterback Drake Maye.

Diggs provided a solid veteran presence with 85 catches and over 1,000 yards in 2025, but his departure leaves a void that the front office hopes to fill with a high-impact target like A.J. Brown, Mike Evans, or Alec Pierce.

Gonzalez earned Pro Bowl honors in 2025 and was a second-team All Pro last year. In just three years of career, Gonzalez has only three interceptions, but has 24 defended passes, 145 total tackles, and has allowed just 56.9% of completion in passes directed his way. When quarterbacks target him, they just have a 77.3 rating. Gonzalez is as great as a cornerback can be in the NFL.

The Patriots are used to top-tier cornerbacks

During the first part of the Patriots’ dynasty, Ty Law was locking out every top-tier wideout in the NFL. In 2004, he departed, but the Patriots had Asante Samuel already on the roster. From 2003 to 2007, he was iconic for the Patriots. A few years passed, but then they had all-time great Darrelle Revis for a year and won Super Bowl XLIX.

A few years passed, and then they had “Mr. INT” in J.C. Jackson and Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore. Hence, the Patriots have a very good sense of what to look for in cornerbacks and Gonzalez is the last proof of it.

“I like the foundation of it, and we’ll try to improve on it,” the latest Coach of the Year said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. Prior to Vrabel’s arrival, the Pats posted back-to-back 4–13 records, but in his most recent campaign, the script flipped entirely: 14 wins and just three losses.

While the level the team displayed throughout the regular season — and even into the postseason — was far superior to some of its rivals, the head coach knows several changes are coming from here on out in order to improve the results.

“There’ll be some difficult decisions that we’ll have to make, and we’ll try to do them with the team’s best interest in mind. As always, that’ll never change,” the former Titans coach also added.

Preparing for what’s next

Building a competitive roster to best support Drake Maye has become imperative for this team, with the offensive line perhaps standing out as its Achilles’ heel. Vrabel understands the business of the NFL well, which is why he knows exactly how to approach this new process.

“As I was taught, we talk about the business of the NFL, we’re looking for the better, younger, cheaper player every day, and the players that we have are trying to not let that happen,” Vrabel said. “And that’s the dynamic. That’s the business of the National Football League.”

Even in moments when the franchise must recover from the recent defeat in Santa Clara, the Patriots’ front office and coaching staff have no intention of resting and are already thinking about building the future team in Foxborough.

According to USA Today, Campbell’s arms measure 32 5/8 inches. Moreover, his 77 3/8-inch wingspan was reportedly the shortest recorded at the NFL Combine since 2011.

Still, the Patriots looked past those concerns—and analysts’ suggestions that he should shift inside to guard—and selected him fourth overall, entrusting him with the left tackle role, the most critical position on the offensive line for a right-handed quarterback. Many believe his struggles in Super Bowl LX had little to do with arm length and were instead the result of inconsistent footwork and poor timing in his punch against edge rushers.

Regardless of what went wrong, Vrabel and the Patriots are not throwing in the towel on Campbell, who later admitted to playing through a knee ligament injury in the Super Bowl. As Vrabel‘s Patriots were blown out of the water all night long by the Hawks, Maye finished the game with 27 completions out of 43 attempts, throwing for 295 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

However, most of Maye’s success—if it can be called that—against Seattle was with Mike Macdonald’s defense on prevent formations late in the fourth quarter. New England had been held scoreless until the final frame. Moreover, Maye was sacked six times—tying a Super Bowl record—throughout the game, including a lost fumble.
