As Cristiano Ronaldo hit the 100-goal mark in the Saudi Pro League, fans are beginning to wonder how Lionel Messi’s MLS tally compares.
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to rewrite the history books, this time in Saudi Arabia. The Portuguese star scored his 100th Saudi Pro League goal to lead Al Nassr to victory, moving the club within reach of the league title. As soon as he hit the century mark, comparisons immediately surfaced regarding Lionel Messi’s current goal count in MLS.

While the Portuguese star has recorded 100 goals in 105 Saudi Pro League matches, Messi has tallied 58 goals in 63 Major League Soccer appearances for Inter Miami.

By reaching this milestone in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo has set an unprecedented record as the only player in history to score 100 or more goals in three different domestic leagues, having previously achieved the feat in LaLiga and the Premier League.

Breaking down Ronaldo’s 100 SPL goals

In his debut 2022–23 campaign, Ronaldo appeared in only 16 matches after joining mid-season. Even in that limited window, he managed 14 goals, offering a glimpse of the prolific scoring to come.

That’s how the 🐐 gets it done. 💯 pic.twitter.com/9q0B64fOyo
— Roshn Saudi League (@SPL_EN) May 7, 2026

His first full season (2023–24) was truly historic; he scored an incredible 35 goals in 30 games, winning his first Golden Boot in Saudi Arabia. In doing so, he broke the single-season scoring record previously held by Abderrazak Hamdallah (34 goals).

Ronaldo secured his second consecutive Golden Boot in the 2024–25 season with 25 goals in 30 matches. In the current 2025–26 campaign, the captain reached the 100-goal career milestone in the Saudi Pro League after netting his 25th goal in 28 games. With two matches remaining in the season, that number is likely to rise further.

Messi’s goal tracker in MLS

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami late in the 2023 season, appearing in only six MLS matches and scoring his lone league goal during his debut against the New York Red Bulls.

His first full season in 2024 was hampered by injuries, limiting him to 19 appearances. Nevertheless, he was highly efficient, scoring 20 goals and earning his first MLS MVP award.

Messi’s most dominant stretch came in 2025, when he led Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup title. He was the league’s standout performer, winning the MLS Golden Boot with 29 goals in 25 games and securing his second consecutive MVP trophy. The Argentine legend is currently on pace for another successful individual campaign in 2026, having already scored eight goals in 10 matches.

Gregg Berhalter will face a former USMNT teammate and player when his Chicago Fire host Michael Bradley's New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Saturday will see Gregg Berhalter face Michael Bradley for the first time as a coach when the Chicago Fire host the New York Red Bulls at Soldier Field in MLS action. Shortly after Bradley credited Berhalter’s influence for his coaching career, Bolavip asked the former USMNT manager what advice he would give Bradley about the job.

“Well, I’m sure he’s getting a lot of advice from his father (former USMNT manager Bob Bradley), and he’s got some great pedigree,” Berhalter said during his Thursday media availability.

“He probably doesn’t need my advice, but, you know, coaching is a journey, and he’s a smart guy, and for him, it’s just a continual journey to keep learning and keep improving.

“And if you could do that as a human being, as a coach, I think you’ll position yourself well. But it’s been fun watching him, really the first of this generation to get an opportunity to be a head coach in MLS, and it’s really nice to see,” Berhalter added.

Gregg Berhalter (left) talks to Michael Bradley during a USMNT game.

When Bradley impressed Berhalter on the USMNT

Bradley was only 18 when he met Berhalter for the first time. Just a month before the 2006 World Cup, Bradley was invited to the USMNT training camp as the senior roster prepared for the big tournament in Germany.

Eventually, Berhalter went on to coach the US national team and in 2018-2019 overlapped with Bradley, who captained the Stars and Stripes in 48 of his 151 international caps.

“I remember the 2006 World Cup, he was joining the team to train with us before we left for Germany, and I sat next to him at one dinner and I remember just talking to him and hearing from him and, at that time, he was wise beyond his years,” Berhalter said in 2023 when Bradley announced his retirement from soccer.

Bradley still taking first steps as a coach

After hanging up his boots, Bradley served as an assistant to his father Bob at Stabæk Fotbal. His first head coaching came with the New York Red Bulls II, leading them to their first-ever MLS Next Pro championship in 2025.

That earned him a promotion to the MLS team after a tough year in which it missed the playoffs. The NYRB are still a work in progress under Bradley, sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference with 12 points in 11 games.

Berhalter, on the other hand, is looking to build on Chicago’s playoff run from last year as his side sits fourth in the East with 17 points in 10 games. This, in addition to his experience on the managerial role, makes Berhalter’s advice useful for a young coach like Bradley, who’s navigating a challenging start in MLS.

Michael Bradley will face Gregg Berhalter for the first time in his coaching career on Saturday when the New York Red Bulls visit the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field.
Saturday’s MLS clash between the Chicago Fire and the New York Red Bulls will mark the first time Gregg Berhalter and Michael Bradley face each other as head coaches. On Thursday, both Bradley and New York goalkeeper Ethan Horvath addressed the media and responded to questions from Bolavip.

“As a coach, you’re a product of all your experiences in the game,” Bradley responded to Bolavip when asked about Berhalter’s influence in his coaching career, with Berhalter showing happiness to see Bradley coaching in MLS.

“And those are experiences as a player, as a fan, as a coach. You try to take everything that you’ve seen, everything that you’ve been a part of, everything that you’ve heard, and put it all together in a way that is true to yourself and reflective of you and the environment that you want to create, and the football that you want your team to play.“

Horvath notes big differences between Bradley, Berhalter

Before having him as a coach on the US national team in 2018-2019, Bradley spent time with Berhalter as a teammate when the USMNT roster prepared for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"Michael will go down as an icon in U.S. Soccer history. He had a great career. I remember him joining us for the 2006 World Cup. He was then wise beyond his years. He had everything that you would want in a player."

Some of Gregg Berhalter's words on Michael Bradley #USMNT pic.twitter.com/xHCTgzYRHU
— The Whole Delivery (@TWDTV1) October 18, 2023

Horvath also played under Berhalter for the Stars and Stripes, helping the country win the 2021 Concacaf Nations League by replacing Zack Steffen in the final against Mexico.

When asked by Bolavip about differences and similarities between Berhalter and Bradley, Horvath claimed their playing styles are completely different, though they have one thing in common when it comes to leading a group.

“I wouldn’t say too much, coaching national team and club are two different things,” Horvath said. “Michael’s within the Red Bull program. Everything’s ultra-aggressive, everything’s on the front foot, whereas with Gregg, we were all so aggressive, but at times, we were a bit more in block and pick and choose when to press and whatnot.

“For me, they’re two completely different coaches, completely different styles. But with all that being said, (they) still (get to) the same point to bring a group together, to be a family and a brotherhood.”

Bradley on Berhalter’s experience

Bradley also mentioned the differences between coaching a club and a national team, but he still took note of Berhalter’s work during their time together.

“Obviously, the national team is never a consistent day-to-day basis, but over the course of probably a year and a half or two years, I was in camps and games with him, and certainly, the way that he sees the game, the way that he set up training sessions, the tone that he has with the group, his way of leading. You take little bits of all that, and you try to use it in a way that then can help you,” Bradley added.

What’s for sure is that both coaches are in very different moments in their careers. While Bradley is just getting started on a New York team that has plenty of work to do, Berhalter is already in his second year in Chicago, bringing all his experience to a team that looks more mature and ready to make a playoff push in the 2026 MLS season.

Ian Fray, teammate of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, was fined by the MLS for blasting referees during the Florida Derby against Orlando City in MLS.
Another sanction for an Inter Miami player. Ian Fray, the homegrown player of The Herons who became the player with the most appearances in club history, was fined by MLS after his comments following the loss against Orlando City in the most recent matchday, where they were defeated and showed a lot of frustration toward the referees, even from Lionel Messi.

Through an official statement, MLS announced that the 23-year-old defender was fined. “Major League Soccer announced today that Inter Miami CF defender Ian Fray has been fined an undisclosed amount for his comments made following Inter Miami’s match against Orlando City SC on May 2. The comments violated the league’s public criticism policy.”

At the end of the match, Ian Fray said to the media: “I feel like the referee has something against me and some other players on the team; they are just simple situations like that. We should not have lost regardless of the referee. That is not an excuse. I am not going to make any excuses at all. We should have won the game,” which led to the financial sanction.

The tough match Inter Miami let slip

With a goal from Ian Fray, Inter Miami opened the scoring and then, with goals from Telasco Segovia and a fantastic finish from Lionel Messi, they built a three-goal lead to win the Florida Derby.

Lionel Messi of Inter Miami

However, a performance from Martin Ojeda with a hat trick and another goal from Tyrese Spicer gave Orlando City the three points in the Florida Derby, delivering a tough blow to Guillermo Hoyos side, who still had not won at NU Stadium, their new home.

Messi message after the loss

The frustration was not only visible in Messi‘s expression, but also in his reaction in the locker room with a strong message. After the final whistle, the Argentine went straight to the tunnel, avoiding contact with the media and showing his dissatisfaction. Shortly after, his teammate Ian Fray spoke to the media and shared the message that the former Barcelona player delivered to the squad in the locker room:

“Our captain spoke and, obviously, gave us a lot of words, first encouraging us for the next match and then saying that this is unacceptable, which we all completely agree with. It is unacceptable and it will not happen again,” the player said about the message from the Inter Miami captain.

Inter Miami currently sit in third place and prepared to visit Toronto on Saturday, May 9, a matchup considered key to regain confidence and show if Messi’s message translates into improvement on the field.

In an exclusive interview with Bolavip US, Colombian legend Willington Ortiz broke down James Rodriguez's move to MLS and shared his outlook ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
In Colombia, numerous soccer talents have gained worldwide recognition, including Luis Diaz, Radamel Falcao Garcia, James Rodriguez (currently with Minnesota United in MLS), and Carlos Valderrama. However, many consider Willington Ortiz, a local legend, as the nation’s greatest player of all time.

Nicknamed ‘El Viejo Willy’ (The Old Willy), Ortiz possessed exceptional skill—comparable in stature to Lionel Messi and as lethal as Cristiano Ronaldo. He made a lasting impact in Colombian soccer, though he never played for an international club or in a World Cup.

Ortiz is an outgoing and charismatic figure, full of soccer stories. Firm in his beliefs, he shared his perspectives on James Rodriguez in an exclusive interview with Bolavip, during an event created by DirecTV leading up to the World Cup.

Beyond discussing Colombia’s prospects in the tournament, Ortiz addressed James’ move to the MLS, considering it a ‘mistake’ for the Colombian star to join Minnesota United.

James Rodriguez of Colombia.

James made a ‘mistake’ by joining Minnesota United

Bolavip: Do you think it was a mistake for James Rodriguez to play in the United States before the World Cup, knowing the coach didn’t really want him?

Willington Ortiz: I think the mistake is when a coach doesn’t want you and you still go to that team. You’re not part of his group or the players he trusts, so he’s not going to play you because you’re not his choice. That’s the mistake.

Colombia won’t rely solely on James

Bolavip: What do you think is really going to happen in this World Cup? Do you think these friendlies are a real test, or are they just to measure strength?

Ortiz: Well, friendlies are a test and you have to measure strength, but when friendlies are played close to the final stages, when the competition is about to start, they are very risky and complicated. Why? Because a soccer player doesn’t perform the same way when there’s still a long time left as when there’s very little time left. And if you play against a strong national team, you can lose, you can win, or you can draw. That’s what happens in a soccer game.

I believe the Colombia national team has elite players—there are top-10 players competing in tournaments like the Champions League that’s being played now, and in South American competitions like the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. So, we have the players.

Colombian soccer legend Willington Ortiz explains why James Rodríguez’s move to Minnesota United in MLS was a “mistake” ✖️🇨🇴 pic.twitter.com/Htw43NZbow
— Bolavip US (@bolavipus) April 30, 2026

I think the coach has options and can build a system that works, whether we have James or not, because everyone is worried since James isn’t playing. He’s at a club where the coach doesn’t want him, didn’t bring him in, so he doesn’t play—just a few minutes. It’s not serious, disrespecting a player of his caliber.

It’s complicated, but Colombia have very good players, and I think people need to be patient because we have a good team and will put in a very strong performance at the World Cup.

Ortiz’s prediction for Colombia in the World Cup

Bolavip: Speaking of that strong performance, how far do you think Colombia will go?

Ortiz: I think they’ll be in the top eight. I believe they’ll make the quarterfinals. This team has what it takes, has very good players, and I think it can reach the top eight.

🚨🇨🇴 Concern in Colombia over James Rodríguez: the talented Colombian player is not getting the playing time he expected at Minnesota United, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching.

Willington Ortiz explains why this raises concerns and says it is “a lack of respect.” pic.twitter.com/3GBDhCixJ4
— Bolavip US (@bolavipus) April 30, 2026

Bolavip: Which player do you think needs to be in top condition to lead the team into those top eight? Or do you think it’s more of a collective effort?

Ortiz: It has to be collective. A soccer team is collective—it has to be. You can’t rely on just one player. Because if a striker is doing well and scoring, but the defense is poor and concedes two goals, you lose and it’s useless. So everyone has to perform well, and all the players we have are elite. I think we have a very good team.

Colombia’s best player and World Cup nostalgia

Bolavip: Speaking about the current form of these Colombian players, and considering you’ve been described as one of, if not the best, in Colombia, who do you think is the nation’s best player right now?

Ortiz: Right now, it’s Luis Diaz. He’s the one performing best. Hopefully he stays healthy, arrives at the World Cup in good shape, and helps us have a strong performance.

Bolavip: Considering what you said about not having had the chance to play in a World Cup, when you watch past World Cups and Colombia’s performances, do you feel anything in particular?

Ortiz: Of course, there’s a sense of sadness because you do everything possible to get there, and sometimes you just can’t. Time passes, and you didn’t get the chance, so it brings a feeling of nostalgia.

World Cup predictions and Messi-Ronaldo’s farewell

Bolavip: Let’s talk about favorites to win the World Cup. Which teams do you think are the strongest candidates?

Ortiz: There are about three teams I see as favorites: Spain, France, and Germany. Those three.

🇦🇷🇵🇹 Lionel Messi no, but Cristiano Ronaldo does have a chance:

Colombian legend Willington Ortiz explains why he doesn’t believe Argentina will win the World Cup again and discusses Portugal’s chances pic.twitter.com/C6PBLrbhHW
— Bolavip US (@bolavipus) April 30, 2026

Bolavip: And finally, talking about two major players who are nearing the end of their international careers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi—do you think Argentina, with Messi, or Portugal, have a chance to go far in this World Cup?

Ortiz: Historically, teams don’t repeat as champions every four years—at least I don’t think they have. Argentina play very well, and Messi is excellent, but I don’t think they’ll repeat as champions. I think it will be someone else. As for Portugal with Cristiano, they have a very good team. They could get close, because they still have that ambition—they haven’t won it yet. Argentina already have, twice.

Julian Hall is eligible to represent either the USMNT or Poland, but New York Red Bulls head coach Michael Bradley isn't putting more pressure on his player.
Bolavip got to ask New York Red Bulls head coach Michael Bradley about the big decision Julian Hall may have to face regarding his international career, with the 18-year-old being eligible to represent either the USMNT or Poland.

“I would give Julian the advice to follow his heart,” Bradley replied to Bolavip during his Tuesday media availability ahead of Wednesday’s derby against New York City FC in the 2026 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup round of 16.

Hall, born and raised in the US, also has Polish citizenship through his mother, who met with Poland‘s soccer federation president Cezary Kulesza this week.

Bradley not putting pressure on Hall to choose the USMNT over Poland

Despite being an icon of the US national team with 151 caps, Bradley understands that Hall’s decision will be personal, which is why he’s encouraging his player to decide what he feels best.

Michael Bradley advises Julian Hall to ‘follow his heart’ as USMNT prospect draws Poland interest pic.twitter.com/NmeLp6PGQd
— Bolavip US (@bolavipus) April 28, 2026

“For any football player who has the possibility to play for two countries, I personally can’t imagine what goes into a decision like that. I was only able to play for one national team, and so that is not something that I have experience with,” Bradley added.

“But for me, when it comes to any big decisions in life, you think about things, and you reflect, and then ultimately you make a decision based on your heart, and based on where you want to go and what you want out of your life and what you want out of that decision. And when you make the decision, then you go for it and you don’t look back.“

Poland FA president meets with Hall’s mother in New York

Kulesza’s post on X revealing the meeting with Hall’s mother made noise on social media, hinting at Poland’s interest in recruiting Hall before he suits up for the Stars and Stripes.

“I met in New York with Julian Zakrzewski Hall’s mom, Ms. Agnieszka. It’s impressive how she supports her son on his soccer journey. We were of the same opinion – that the surname Zakrzewski looks beautiful on a white-and-red jersey,” Kulesza wrote.

Julian Hall’s excellent start to 2026 puts him on Poland’s radar again

Hall has been in great form for New York early in 2026, boasting six goals and two assists in just 10 MLS appearances. All of this with his mother’s birth name, Zakrzewski, on the back of his shirt.

Julian Hall has six goals in 10 MLS games in 2026.

This fact, combined with Kulesza’s recent meeting, could worry USMNT fans about Poland’s chances to recruit Hall.

That said, the forward already had the possibility to represent Poland at the youth international level, yet he only played for the US. Only time will tell what flag he ends up representing for the rest of his career.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have expressed their strong desire to remain in Canada following reports that MLS is evaluating a potential relocation for the franchise.
The future of Thomas Muller and the Vancouver Whitecaps is under the spotlight as MLS reportedly considers the club’s viability in its current market. Rumors have swirled that the league is eyeing Las Vegas or Phoenix as potential landing spots for the franchise. However, the club’s ownership group has broken its silence to insist that moving is not their primary goal.

“The club has faced well-documented structural challenges around stadium economics, venue access, and revenue limitations that have made it difficult to attract buyers committed to keeping the team in Vancouver… It remains the strong preference of this ownership group to find a solution in Vancouver,” the club stated in an official release.

The organization also issued an urgent call to local investors, seeking a domestic ownership group with the vision and resources to chart a sustainable path forward that keeps the Whitecaps in British Columbia.

Why is MLS considering a move?

Despite the team’s significant growth and deep cultural roots in Canada, MLS Commissioner Don Garber has labeled the club’s current financial framework untenable.

A view of the BC Place during a Whitecaps game. (Getty Images)

The core of the issue lies with BC Place. Because the stadium is publicly managed, the Whitecaps lack control over concessions, secondary commercial revenue, and high-end hospitality income.

This puts Vancouver at a severe disadvantage compared to MLS clubs that own their stadiums or have more lucrative lease agreements, limiting their ability to reinvest in the squad and infrastructure.

Success on the field amid uncertainty

The relocation rumors come at a bittersweet moment, as the Whitecaps are currently enjoying arguably the greatest era in club history. The team has become a powerhouse in North American soccer, bolstered by the arrival of German legend Thomas Muller, who is now in his second season with the club.

Last season, Vancouver established itself as an elite force, reaching both the MLS Cup Final and the Concacaf Champions Cup Final, falling to Inter Miami and Cruz Azul, respectively.

The momentum has carried into the 2026 season, where the Whitecaps currently sit second in the Western Conference with 24 points (7 wins, 1 loss, and a game in hand). Only time will tell if they will ultimately take this great momentum elsewhere, or if fans will be able to continue enjoying their team in their own city.

MLS are reportedly considering relocating the Vancouver Whitecaps and Thomas Muller to Las Vegas.
The Vancouver Whitecaps have had a notable rise since the arrival of Thomas Muller from Bayern Munich, with teammate Mathias Laborda recently praising Muller’s impact and leadership. But within MLS, there is discussion about a potential relocation out of Vancouver and potentially moving them to Las Vegas, which would be a major media impact.

According to Tom Bogert and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic, a special committee of Major League Soccer owners met earlier this month to discuss and evaluate the future of the Vancouver Whitecaps, including the possibility of relocation. A move to Las Vegas was the chief option discussed at the meeting.

A club in MLS has not been formally relocated since 2006, when the San Jose Earthquakes were moved to Houston and became the Dynamo. In 2008, San Jose was awarded an expansion club and regained the Quakes’ history.

The proposal from Las Vegas

Las Vegas, according to the report, has already put forward a very attractive offer. One of the investors unveiled a $10 billion development plan on the Las Vegas Strip called Starr Vegas that would include a 50,000-seat soccer stadium, but the sources said that it is not the group that has engaged with MLS.

Thomas Muller (left) and Mathias Laborda celebrate after a Whitecaps win.

Other interested cities

Las Vegas is one of the few markets with potential investors that have expressed interest in joining MLS, along with Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Sacramento. Phoenix, along with Las Vegas, is another of the main candidates for relocation.

At the same time, Vancouver has a reason to be concerned about a move; the Whitecaps continue to search for a solution in the market for a new stadium, as their lease at BC Place expires at the end of this year. The club also remains for sale. The longer this situation continues without progress, the greater the threat of relocation.

“Since December 2024, ownership has prioritized finding a buyer committed to keeping the team in Vancouver, and to date, no solution has been found,” the Whitecaps said in a club statement provided to The Athletic.

The impact of the Whitecaps

If this situation were to happen, it would be something very serious for the MLS landscape. We are talking about one of the biggest and most historic teams on this side. The club was initially formed and played its inaugural season in the NASL in 1974. The club has played in various leagues for all but two years since 1974, but has always remained in Vancouver.

Vancouver is enjoying one of its best sporting moments. In Muller’s first year with the club, the Whitecaps reached the 2025 MLS Cup final against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, and they also reached the Concacaf Champions Cup final.

They are once again among the best teams in MLS in 2026, three points off first place in the Supporters Shield race, with a game in hand after nine matches. The club has made the most of its early home schedule, with Muller and company holding a 7-1-0 record at BC Place.

The location of the Whitecaps’ future stadium remains the biggest unknown, with Whitecaps fans already starting a #SAVETHECAPS movement to protest against a potential relocation.

Inter Miami drew 1-1 with NE Revolution in an MLS matchup at Nu Stadium, with German Berterame scoring the equalizer to rescue a point as the Herons remain without a win at their new home.
Inter Miami drew 1-1 against New England Revolution in their latest MLS match at Nu Stadium, with German Berterame scoring the equalizer after NE Revolution had taken the lead through Carles Gil. Inter Miami created several chances through Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, but Matt Turner made key saves to keep the visitors in the game.

The opening half saw Inter Miami control possession and generate more shots on target, but NE Revolution stayed dangerous on the counterattack. Both sides exchanged chances, with Messi and Carles Gil leading the creative play in their respective teams. Despite Inter Miami’s dominance in key stats, NE Revolution struck first and held their advantage for much of the match.

In the second half, Inter Miami pushed higher up the pitch under Guilhermo Hoyos and eventually found the equalizer through Berterame after a rebound inside the box. NE Revolution responded with their own attacking spells, but St. Clair and Turner delivered important saves at both ends. The match ended level, leaving Inter Miami still searching for their first home win at Nu Stadium.
