Alcaraz is now one of just two players to have won six Masters 1000 titles before turning 22. His fellow Spaniard Nadal was the first to do so, achieving the feat with his 2006 win at the Roma Open at just 19 years old. Carlos is slightly older, with his 22nd birthday just weeks away.

It’s worth noting that this statistic only includes players from the modern era, as the Masters 1000 events were officially introduced to the ATP Tour in 1990. As a result, legends from earlier decades such as Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe are not part of this list.

Alcaraz’s previous Masters 1000 titles include the 2022 Miami Open, the 2022 and 2023 Madrid Opens, and the 2023 and 2024 editions of Indian Wells. Now, Monte-Carlo joins that collection—and in the coming weeks, the young Spaniard will have ideal chances to add to his resume, with the Madrid and Roma Masters 1000 events on clay, his favorite surface, coming up between April and May.

Another milestone for Alcaraz

The title in Monte-Carlo also added to an already remarkable stat line for Alcaraz. He now owns a 10–1 record in Grand Slam and Masters 1000 finals, proving he has both the talent and mentality to thrive on tennis’s biggest stages.

In his five-year career, Carlos has played in four Grand Slam finals and won all of them: the 2022 US Open, 2023 Wimbledon, and both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2024. His Masters 1000 finals record is nearly flawless as well, with six wins and just one loss—against Novak Djokovic at Cincinnati in 2023.

Alcaraz happy after Monte-Carlo title

Monte-Carlo marked the second title of the year for Carlos Alcaraz, following his earlier triumph at the Rotterdam Open. The win puts the young star back in the spotlight and positions him as a top contender for the upcoming stretch of tournaments.

“A lot of people have really high expectations on me, on having a really good clay season. Probably they want me to win almost every tournament, so it’s going to be difficult to deal with it, I guess,” he said after his victory over Musetti, as shared by the official ATP Tour website.

“But one thing that I learned the last month is I have to think about myself. Alcaraz now leads the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, holding a narrow edge over Sinner. Carlos sits atop the table with 2,060 points, while the World No. 1 from Italy—currently suspended for doping—is in second place with 2,000 points.

Further down the list, and at a significant distance from the top two, are the players rounding out the top eight: Alexander Zverev (1,675), Jack Draper (1,640), Novak Djokovic (1,520), Alex De Miñaur (1,485), Jakub Mensik (1,330), and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (1,210).

What is the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin?

The PIF ATP Live Race To Turin is a ranking system in which points are accumulated throughout the season to determine qualification for the ATP Finals, previously known as the Masters. Points start counting in January and accumulate through early November, after the ATP 250 tournaments in Belgrade and Metz.

The ATP Finals is a tournament held annually near the end of the season, featuring the top eight players in the world. The top seven in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin qualify directly, while the final spot can go to the player ranked eighth. However, if a current-year Grand Slam champion is ranked between 8th and 20th and hasn’t already qualified, that player will receive the final spot.

With his run in Monte-Carlo, Alcaraz reached 100 tour-level matches played on clay. And upon entering that group, he became the player with the highest win percentage on the surface, surpassing Djokovic and other top names, according to the official ATP Tour website.

It’s an impressive achievement, especially considering the Spaniard’s young age. Just a month shy of turning 22, Carlos has already claimed 17 career titles—8 of them on clay. In fact, his first professional match win came on clay at the ATP 500 in Rio in 2020, when he defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas at just 16 years old.

From that point on, Alcaraz has carved out an extraordinary path. His first tour-level title came on clay in Umag in 2021. That was followed by Rio, Barcelona, and Madrid in 2022; Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Madrid in 2023; and Roland Garros in 2024.

Alcaraz feels at home on clay

After his Monte-Carlo debut win against Francisco Cerundolo, Carlos Alcaraz signed “I missed clay” on the TV camera. Asked about the message during his post-match press conference, the Spanish player was candid.

“Previously I said that clay was my second favourite surface after fast courts, but now I’m not sure,” he said. “I think now I’d say it’s my favourite. I simply missed clay. I love this part of the year, I grew up on this surface, so that’s why I’d put it first.”

Having acknowledged how comfortable he feels on clay, this stretch of the season becomes especially important for Carlos Alcaraz as he aims to catch Jannik Sinner at the top of the ATP rankings. Monte-Carlo marks the beginning of a lengthy slate of clay tournaments where Carlos will have a chance to make up ground. He’s set to continue his campaign in Barcelona, then Madrid and Rome, before arriving at the second Grand Slam of the year: Roland Garros.

However, for that pursuit to succeed, Alcaraz will need to take it step by step. Next up on that journey: the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals. After victories over Francisco Cerundolo and Daniel Altmaier, the young Spaniard will face Arthur Fils on Friday morning.

“I didn’t start well. I made a lot of mistakes and I let him play inside the court, dominating the points,” Alcaraz admitted about his performance at the start of the match against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. However, the World No. 3 soon found his rhythm and went on to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

“After the first set, I just knew that I had to do something else, play more aggressively, and play my own tennis: drop shots, going to the net, and more aggression,” explained the Spanish star about the keys to his victory. “The most important change was the return; I tried to return closer to the line and push him.”

With this win, Alcaraz advanced to the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, where he will face Daniel Altmaier. The German, currently ranked World No. 84, reached this stage after defeating Richard Gasquet 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in his tournament opener.

Monte-Carlo is a big opportunity for Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz was unable to compete in the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 due to physical issues. This means he has no points to defend here, giving him a significant advantage over his top-ranked competitors.

Alexander Zverev reached the round of 16 at this event last year, so his early exit this time will cost him valuable points. Jannik Sinner, who made it to the semifinals, will lose even more points. This means that if Alcaraz can make a deep run in Monte-Carlo, he could close the gap with World No. 1 and potentially even overtake Zverev.

More surprises at Monte-Carlo

Alexander Zverev wasn’t the only top ATP player to suffer an unexpected loss in his Monte-Carlo debut. Novak Djokovic, the current World No. 5, also exited the tournament early after a surprising 6-3, 6-4 loss to Alejandro Tabilo.

After the match, Djokovic reflected on his disappointing early elimination from the Monte-Carlo Masters with an honest message. “I expected myself at least to have put in a decent performance. Not like this, it was horrible,” said the Serbian star.

“I thought my level was terrible, but that’s just my opinion,” Zverev admitted in the post-match press conference following his defeat in Monte-Carlo, as shared by the official ATP Tour website. “It’s been the worst period since my injury these last few months.”

The German star went on to explain that what happened on Tuesday wasn’t new to him, but rather part of a difficult stretch in his career. “The same story the last few months. Nothing changes,” he said. “I have not won many matches… It’s a matter of me losing. It’s as simple as that.”

Zverev reflects on his recent failures

The early exit in Monte-Carlo adds to the string of disappointments Alexander Zverev has experienced in recent months. After reaching the final of the Australian Open in late January, he has been far from his best level, as evidenced by his results.

“You win one or two matches like this, there are no more questions, for me in my mind,” he explained. “But I lost three sets in Buenos Aires, I lost three sets in Rio, I lost three sets in Indian Wells, I lost three sets in Miami, I lost three sets here, and I didn’t win a single one. So that’s the issue.”

Zverev misses a golden opportunity

This dip in form came at the most inopportune time for Alexander Zverev. Just when Jannik Sinner was suspended for three months due to a doping ban and missed a significant portion of the season, the German star endured a series of disappointing performances that kept him from closing in on the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings.

Zverev will look to move past this tough stretch when he competes at the ATP 500 event in Munich, set to begin on Monday, April 14. With the support of his home crowd, the German star may be able to start his ascent back up the rankings and return to the form that led him to the No. 2 spot.

“I definitely need to win some matches and play good tennis,” said Zverev during a press conference on Saturday, as shared by the official ATP Tour website. “Winning matches is the main part in order to build confidence and get into the right mindset.”

The 27-year-old German star reflected on his recent performance at the Miami Open, where he was unexpectedly eliminated in the round of 16 by Arthur Fils. “In Miami, I felt I was playing better than I had been before, and then I woke up with a bad neck just that day — which was a bit unlucky for me — so I was a bit restricted.”

Zverev then speculated on what might have happened had he stayed in the tournament. “In the quarter-finals, I would have played (Jakub) Mensik. He obviously won the tournament, but maybe if I’d gotten my confidence back, I would have been the favorite in all of those matches,” he said. “It can happen quickly, and I hope it will happen within the next few weeks.”

Zverev explains his disappointing performances

The 2025 season had started strong for Alexander Zverev. He reached the final of the Australian Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, but lost in the decisive game to Jannik Sinner. “I did not take a rest after Australia, and mentally, Australia affected me a lot,” he admitted.

“I was very upset and very tired, and I came back here and went straight to South America, so I didn’t really have time to process what happened, losing in a Grand Slam final,” Alexander explained. “I kept going, which was not the smartest thing to do.”

In Buenos Aires, Zverev lost in the quarter-finals to Francisco Cerundolo, while at the Rio Open, he was eliminated at the same stage by Francisco Comesaña. In Mexico, things didn’t improve as he was knocked out in the round of 16 by Learner Tien, and in Indian Wells, his previous tournament before Miami, he suffered an opening-round defeat to Tallon Griekspoor.

Zverev feels comfortable in Monte-Carlo

Alexander Zverev is based in Monte-Carlo, and he believes this familiarity will work to his advantage. “You’re still a bit more relaxed, a bit more refreshed,” he said. “Sleeping in your own bed, having home-cooked meals is quite nice. My whole family is here. Familiarity helps and is something very, very nice.”

The World No. 2 will make his debut at the Masters 1000 on Tuesday, April 8, though his opponent in the round of 32 is not yet determined: it could be Matteo Berrettini or a qualifier. “For me right now, it’s about winning matches and getting back to the winning pace,” Zverev concluded.
