The game carries significant implications for playoff positioning, as the two clubs are separated by just two points heading into the final stretch of the regular season. New England sit second with 58 points, while Inter Miami are third with 56 points.

The Revolution have enjoyed an excellent run of form, winning four consecutive matches before Sunday’s encounter. Their most recent victory was a thrilling 3-2 result against Red Bull New York, in which Dor Turgeman scored twice and Daniel Gazdag netted the late winner. Carles Gil also reached a significant milestone, becoming the eighth player in MLS history to record 100 regular-season assists.

Inter Miami, meanwhile, arrive as the reigning MLS Cup champions and will be looking to finish the regular season strongly. The Herons drew 2-2 against FC Cincinnati in their previous match and have gone two games without a victory.

Lionel Messi remains one of their biggest attacking threats, while the team’s objective will be to close the gap on New England and potentially move into second place in the Eastern Conference.

However, the Argentine superstar avoids suspension completely thanks to a special MLS rule. Beat reporter Michelle Kaufman confirmed that Messi remains fully eligible for the upcoming match.

MLS disciplinary regulations wipe away a ban if a player goes five games straight without a booking. Because Messi completed multiple clean stretches between fouls, his disciplinary tally dropped safely below the threshold and hence, he’ll play vs Revolution.

Why does MLS have this rule?

MLS implements the Good Behavior Incentive to reward consistent discipline over a long 34-match season. The policy encourages clean play by giving athletes an active path to reset their card counts.

The rule prevents crucial stars from missing high-stakes games due to minor, scattered infractions. A player who maintains discipline over several weeks earns actual forgiveness for early-season mistakes.

This structure keeps marquee talent on the pitch for fans and television audiences alike. Therefore, as long as players show sustained fair play, the league avoids penalizing them harshly for occasional fouls.

Messi’s bookings this season

Referees have cautioned Messi five times across Inter Miami‘s 2026 MLS campaign. His bookings occurred on Matchdays 8, 11, 20, 31, and 33 against Colorado, Orlando, Nashville, Atlanta, and Cincinnati.

Because Messi went five consecutive games without incident between several of those matchdays, two cautions expired. Consequently, his active disciplinary balance currently stands at only three yellow cards.

Key takeaways

• Lionel Messi received his fifth yellow card of the season against FC Cincinnati.
• Reporter Michelle Kaufman confirmed Lionel Messi remains fully eligible to play against New England.
• Lionel Messi’s active disciplinary balance currently stands at only three yellow cards.

The opening half saw Inter Miami control possession and generate more shots on target, but NE Revolution stayed dangerous on the counterattack. Both sides exchanged chances, with Messi and Carles Gil leading the creative play in their respective teams. Despite Inter Miami’s dominance in key stats, NE Revolution struck first and held their advantage for much of the match.

In the second half, Inter Miami pushed higher up the pitch under Guilhermo Hoyos and eventually found the equalizer through Berterame after a rebound inside the box. NE Revolution responded with their own attacking spells, but St. Clair and Turner delivered important saves at both ends. The match ended level, leaving Inter Miami still searching for their first home win at Nu Stadium.

Since Guillermo Hoyos took over as head coach, Inter Miami have remained undefeated. Under his leadership, the team has secured two massive road victories—a 3-2 thriller against the Colorado Rapids followed by a disciplined 2-0 shutout of Real Salt Lake.

However, today presents a formidable challenge. The New England Revolution arrive in Miami on a hot streak of four consecutive wins. Revolution coach Marko Mitrovic acknowledged the difficulty of the task in his pre-match press conference, noting that Messi can change the game at any moment, highlighting the constant threat the World Cup winner poses.

Inter Miami dealing with some absences

Hoyos will be without his full squad for the match against the Revolution. Sergio Reguilon and Mateo Silvetti have been ruled out due to injury, while Yannick Bright and Telasco Segovia are currently serving suspensions.

Bright was sanctioned by MLS for violating the league’s non-discrimination policy during the victory over Real Salt Lake, and Segovia picked up his fifth yellow card in the same match. Both players must serve a one-game ban and will be eligible to return for the following fixture against Orlando City in the Florida Derby.

Miami seeking elusive first win at Nu Stadium

Tonight’s clash against the Revolution is more than just a typical league fixture for the hosts; it is a quest for a historic milestone. Despite their strong form on the road, Inter Miami are still searching for their first-ever victory at Nu Stadium since the venue’s grand opening earlier this month.

The home win drought has been a surprising storyline for the Herons. In the stadium’s inaugural match, Miami salvaged a 2-2 draw against Austin FC, with Messi and Luis Suarez scoring the first historic goals at the new grounds.

They followed that with another 2-2 stalemate against the New York Red Bulls, meaning the fans at Miami Freedom Park are still waiting to celebrate a three-point result in their own backyard.

Fresh off a gritty win over Real Salt Lake, Inter Miami picked up three crucial points to stay firmly in the hunt atop the Eastern Conference, now sitting just one point behind Nashville SC despite having played an extra match.

Lionel Messi and company understands there’s little margin for error, and their next test won’t come easy against the New England Revolution, who currently hold third place in the East and can both narrow the gap to the summit and slow down a direct rival with a statement result.

“When you face a team with Lionel Messi, no matter what, just the presence of Messi and understanding that he can change the game in any given moment—even if nobody else sees that—he’ll find a way,” Mitrovic noted during Thursday’s press conference.

Both sides enter the clash in peak form, setting the stage for a really exciting game. The Revolution are riding a four-game winning streak, while Inter Miami arrive with two consecutive road wins and an active eight-game unbeaten run.

Messi’s influence beyond the ball

Mitrovic emphasized that the danger of Inter Miami isn’t limited to Messi’s individual brilliance; it’s also about how the Argentine veteran amplifies the talent around him.

“I also know that Messi unlocks so many players on the field and exposes their strengths. They have some quality with Luis Suarez and other players high on the field,” Mitrovic added.

Suarez proved this impact in the recent win over Real Salt Lake. Despite coming off the bench for the final 15 minutes, the Uruguayan striker scored the decisive second goal to seal the victory, proving that Miami’s attack remains lethal even when rotated.

Inter Miami seeking historic first win at Nu Stadium

Surprisingly, since moving from Chase Stadium to the state-of-the-art Nu Stadium, Inter Miami have yet to secure a victory on their new grass. Their home debut ended in a 2-2 draw against Austin FC, a result that was repeated in their following home fixture against the New York Red Bulls.

Saturday’s match offers the Herons a chance to record their first-ever win at their new home, though the task will be daunting against a red-hot Revolution squad currently fighting for a top spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

This match was Messi’s last appearance before joining the national team for the October friendlies in the United States. Inter Miami, already guaranteed a playoff spot, fielded several of its biggest names and most of its starters, while AFA president Chiqui Tapia watched from the stands.

In the 32nd minute, Messi threaded a perfect pass to Tadeo Allende, who finished with precision to open the scoring. Before halftime, the No. 10 struck again with another masterful play: he won the ball from the opponent, drove down the left flank, and assisted Jordi Alba, who slotted home for a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the visitors tried to respond, pulling one back through a powerful long-range strike from David Turgeman in the 14th minute. However, their hopes of an equalizer lasted only seconds, as Messi immediately delivered another surgical assist to Allende, making it 3-1. Messi’s performance was another reminder of his vision and creativity on the field.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s single-game assist record

Cristiano Ronaldo’s top single soccer game assist record stands at four, achieved in Real Madrid’s 8-1 rout of UD Almería on May 21, 2011. This achievement is notable because it highlights Ronaldo’s ability to be an elite facilitator—something historically attributed more to Lionel Messi. While Messi often racks up three or four assists per match as part of his creative routine, Ronaldo’s performance that day showcased the full breadth of his offensive arsenal.

The first notable assist came for the 3-1 goal, with a precise pass to Karim Benzema, who finished into an empty net. In the second half, Ronaldo continued his streak by setting up Emmanuel Adebayor after a shot attempt of his own, followed by another perfect through ball to Benzema. These contributions directly countered the narrative that Ronaldo was a “selfish” player focused solely on scoring.

Ronaldo’s fourth and final assist was particularly generous, completing the record. He delivered a precise cross for youth academy product Joselu to score with a header, giving a less experienced teammate a moment in the spotlight. This generosity often contrasts with Messi’s playstyle in fans’ eyes, but the match demonstrates that Ronaldo also possessed exceptional vision and team awareness.

In the context of their historic rivalry, Ronaldo’s four-assist game highlights his ability to contribute offensively beyond scoring. While goals have been his primary weapon, this 2011 performance shows he could also match Messi’s playmaking in a single night, adding a significant layer to his legacy.

Lionel Messi’s top single-game assist record

The record for most assists in a single club match for Lionel Messi is five. He achieved this historic feat in the MLS with Inter Miami during a 6-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls in May 2024. One more than Ronaldo’s record, this performance further cements Messi not just as a scorer but as one of the most complete playmakers in soccer history.

According to Jose Armando Rodriguez, Inter Miami completed their final training session with the entire squad, indicating that Lionel Messi is physically ready to lead the offense. With this in mind, head coach Javier Mascherano will field the Argentine star, hoping he will guide the team to an important victory and break their negative streak.

Despite not requiring a victory to advance to the season’s second phase, the Herons must avoid a slump to maintain momentum heading into the playoffs. A series of subpar performances could jeopardize their MLS Cup aspirations. To counter this, head coach Javier Mascherano will reintroduce Rodrigo De Paul into the midfield alongside Sergio Busquets to bolster the team’s defensive stability and ensure they enter the postseason in top form.

Inter Miami eagerly welcome back Luis Suarez to the front line, his recent striking performance highlighted by an impressive brace. With his return, the Herons’ offense looks poised to dominate, especially as Lionel Messi tirelessly pursues his quest for a first MLS Golden Boot. Given their current form, the matchup against the New England Revolution promises to be an electrifying contest.

Inter Miami lineup vs New England Revolution

Unlike previous matches, Inter Miami enter the game against New England Revolution with a full squad, with only Mateo Silvetti absent as he plays in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup with Argentina. Despite this, head coach Javier Mascherano will make changes to his lineup, seeking improvement over previous games. However, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi promise to once again lead the team’s offense.

With this in mind, the Herons will lineup as follows: Rocco Rios Novo; Ian Fray, Maximiliano Falcon, Noah Allen, Jordi Alba; Baltasar Rodriguez, Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo De Paul, Tadeo Allende; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez.

New England Revolution lineup vs Inter Miami

New England Revolution come into the game against Inter Miami with three players missing: Peyton Miller (suspended due to accumulated yellow cards), Ilay Feingold (ankle injury), and Ignatius Ganago (calf injury). Despite this, they are coming off an important victory against Atlanta United with Leonardo Campana regaining his scoring touch. For this reason, head coach Caleb Porter will opt for continuity in his lineup.

Considering this, NE Revolution will play as follows: Matt Turner; Brandon Bye, Brayan Ceballos, Mamadou Fofana, Tanner Beason, William Sands; Carles Gil, Allan Oyirwoth, Matt Polster; Dor Turgeman, Leonardo Campana.

In a wild back-and-forth battle, Inter Miami came up short in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Fire, a setback that stalled their push toward the top of the standings with the regular season winding down. Lionel Messi and his squad are now focused on a strong finish, aiming to climb as high as possible before the postseason.

Their next challenge comes against the New England Revolution, who may be out of contention but remain determined to close the season on a high note—and nothing would make a bigger statement than knocking off Messi’s Miami side.

Inter Miami found themselves down by two goals early on, but before halftime, Luis Suarez leveled the game with two goals in just three minutes. The real magic, however, came in the second half when Messi took the field wearing the No. 10 jersey.

“Inter Miami is a team that you know when they’re struggling, they have world-class players who can change the game in an instant. Suárez, in the first half, made two individual plays that really shifted the momentum,” Porter remarked in the post-game press conference.

More than 20,000 fans at Chase Stadium erupted as Messi began warming up. He stepped onto the pitch 12 minutes into the second half with the score tied at 2-2 and needed less than a minute to shift the dynamics of the game.

Jordi Alba broke into the box and laid a pass off to Messi, who one-timed a perfectly weighted ball back to Alba, setting up Benjamin Cremaschi for the finish. All this happened in just 34 seconds from the moment Messi entered the field, and Porter didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts on Messi’s immediate influence.

Porter’s thoughts on Messi’s instant impact

After acknowledging that Inter Miami had subbed in “the best player in the world, the greatest in the history of our sport,” Porter marveled at Messi’s first touch that set up the goal, calling it “a perfectly weighted ball behind the line.”

What’s next for Inter Miami in the MLS Playoffs?

Inter Miami capped off a historic regular season with a record-breaking 74 points after thrashing New England Revolution 6-2. Messi and his team will enter the 2024 MLS Playoffs in the first round, facing the winner of the match between CF Montréal and Atlanta United on Friday, October 25.

The opening series will be a best-of-three matchup, meaning Inter Miami must win two games against the same opponent to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
