Joel Embiid is working hard to return to form ahead of the NBA regular season, and Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse provided a promising update on his recovery.
The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for their NBA season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks this week. The Sixers went 2-3 in the preseason without their star player Joel Embiid, who is still recovering from an injury. Head coach Nick Nurse recently provided an update on Embiid’s progress.

Embiid, fresh off winning a gold medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics, missed the preseason due to injury. However, he has been seen participating in team practice in recent training camp footage.

Speaking to ClutchPoints reporter Sam DiGiovanni, Nurse shared details on Embiid’s recovery: “I would say he’s going to be very limited in that stuff as the new normal. I think that he’s moving pretty good. He’s getting a lot of work in.”

Nurse added that while Embiid is making progress, he is not yet fully back: “He’s out there for 60 to 70 percent of team practice until we get to the more physical stuff.” Videos on social media have shown Embiid gradually ramping up his activity alongside his teammates.

Joel Embiid training. Via @SamDiGiovanni

Is there an estimated return date for Embiid?

Ahead of the season opener, Nurse was cautious about setting a timeline for Embiid’s return, emphasizing that the team is taking a careful approach: “We’re trying to make sure we’re not overdoing it this early in the year.”

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/nba-news-kevin-garnett-critical-of-philadelphia-76ers-joel-embiids-recovery-plan" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20241018_BUS_255175_Joel-Embiid-21-of-the-Philadelphia-76ers-poses-for-a-picture-at-media-day-at-76ers-Training-Complex.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Kevin Garnett thinks Joel Embiid's injury plan highlights a bigger issue: many NBA players don't condition properly in the off-season before training camp and preseason.

With the calendar year nearing its end, the Sixers are hopeful that Embiid can make a full recovery soon and help propel the team during the NBA regular season.

What’s next for the Sixers?

In their season opener, the Sixers will face the Milwaukee Bucks, who had a rough preseason with a 1-3 record, their only win coming against the Bulls. The game presents an opportunity for Philadelphia to start the season strong, even if Embiid remains sidelined.

Sixers’ calendar for the beginning of the regular season:

vs. Bucks – Game 1

vs. Raptors – Game 2

vs. Pacers – Game 3

vs. Pistons – Game 4

vs. Grizzlies – Game 5

Before taking the 76ers head coaching job, Nick Nurse was also on the Suns' shortlist. Therefore, many wonder why he snubbed the star-studded team led by Kevin Durant for Joel Embiid and company.
In the wake of an embarrassing elimination at the hands of the Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to move on from Doc Rivers. It didn’t take them long to find a new man for the job, with Nick Nurse immediately taking the reins.

Curiously, their new coach had also been fired recently, since the Toronto Raptors parted with him in April. Either way, the Sixers are already looking forward to turning the page after a string of playoff failures.

Nurse comes to town with a championship in his résumé, having led Toronto to its lone ring in 2019. He had also drawn interest from the Suns and Bucks, but there’s a reason why he preferred the City of Brotherly Love.

Nick Nurse mentions Daryl Morey as reason to snub Kevin Durant, Suns

“Well, there’s several things you’re evaluating,” Nurse said, via ClutchPoints. “First of all, I know what’s a good team because I’m in the trenches trying to battle you guys a lot. Pretty good rivalry, right? We saw each other a lot and playoffs and stuff as well. Certainly a big factor.

“And then, I think what’s most important is ownership. Just just like the other side, do your research, and everything I hear is super positiv. And I know Daryl and Daryl’s track record of getting players and putting together a roster that can compete for the title, I think speaks for itself. And that’s what made it a fairly easy decision in the end.”

Turning down the possibility to coach a team with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Chris Paul in the same roster is never an easy choice to make, which is why this speaks volumes of Nurse’s trust in Daryl Morey.

During his time with the Raptors, he faced the Sixers on many occasions in the playoffs. Now he’ll be coaching his former rivals, who need someone to guide them to the promised land once and for all.

Nick Nurse was reportedly quite close to signing with the Phoenix Suns, but a big reason made him lean toward the Philadelphia 76ers instead.
It’s the dawn of a new era for the Philadelphia 76ers. They will no longer be held hostage by Doc Rivers, and Nick Nurse might as well be the breath of fresh air they need to pursue an NBA championship.

Nurse was one of the main guys and best coaches available out there right now, and they had to face some steep competition to land him. But he was also eager to arrive at the City of Brotherly Love.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Nurse actually chose the Sixers over Kevin Durant’s Phoenix Suns because he wanted to coach reigning MVP Joel Embiid.

Nick Nurse Wanted To Coach Joel Embiid

“The Sixers and Phoenix Suns were engaged with Nurse and his agent, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports, throughout Sunday and Monday, leaving Nurse with a difficult decision between two contending teams, sources said,“ Wojnarowski reported.

“Nurse’s desire to coach MVP Joel Embiid and his history with Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey played a significant part in his decision to commit to a deal with Philadelphia, sources said. Nurse separated himself in the interview process, selling a vision for the Sixers centered on Embiid,” Woj continued.

“Embiid will be the first player to win the MVP and start the next season on the same team with a new coach since the Lakers’ Magic Johnson in 1990-91,” concluded the report.

It’s not every day that a coach chooses you over Kevin Durant, so Embiid should be quite excited about everything Nurse might be planning for him. Hopefully, he’ll manage to stay healthy and live up to those expectations.

It’s been quite a while since the Sixers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, let alone the NBA Finals, and the narrative around Embiid has drastically shifted after a subpar postseason run.

Who are the highest paid sports coaches in the United States? This list breaks down who earns the big bucks in the sports world in the United States.
For every star player there is a great coach that guides themand puts together a roster that helps excel that player and theirteammates. Coaches are important for many reasons, they are leaders, father figures, and in this day and age even a psychologist.

Sportico published the 25 highest paid sports coaches in the United States and a few things stood out. For example, there is not one coach from the MLS, MLB, or NHL. NCAA coaches make an incredible amount of money, and the NFL clearly likes to write big checks.

The NBA has some names on the list and while the NFL dominates the number of highest paid coaches, if they truly deserve their salary is a subject for another day. Here are the 25 top paid coaches in American sports.

25. Steve Nash – $8 Million

Steve Nash (Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)

The now Brooklyn Nets coach got to the Eastern conference semifinals with the Nets in his first year at the helm. In 2020/21 Steve Nash had a .667 winning percentage, not bad for a first timer. Nash earns a substantial amount of money for a coach with all of one year’s experience, $8 million.

24. Nick Nurse – $8 Million

Nick Nurse (Photo by Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

Now in his 4thyear as Toronto Raptors coach, Nick Nurse earns $8 million a year. Nurse won the NBA title in 2019, but last season the Raptors did not make the postseason. Nurse has coached since 1989 and been an assistant and head coach in several countries.

23. Mike Budenholzer – $8 Million

Mike Budenholzer (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images)

The current NBA champion head coach Mike Budenholzer comes in at $8 million a season, Budenholzer has been at the helm of the Bucks for fourseasons now with a championship season last year to go along two other very promising seasons.

22. Bruce Arians – $8 Million

Bruce Arians (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images)

Bruce Arians is the first NFL coach on the list coming in at $8 million a season, all Arians has done was win the Super Bowl last season and get the best out of Tom Brady at what many consider the tail end of his career.

21. Sean McVay – $8.5 Million

Sean McVay (Photo by Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images)

Sean McVay is the coach of the Los Angeles Rams and in his 5 seasons with the Rams he got to the Super Bowl 1 time and holds a .675 winning percentage. McVay was the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2017.

20. Sean McDermott – $8.5 Million

Sean McDermott (Photo by Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images)

There is nothing small market about the Bills if they can shell out $8.5 million on their coach. Sean McDermott has been with the Buffalo Bills for 5 seasons now and has alternated good seasons with some less than impressive ones.

19. Ron Rivera – $8.5 Million

Ron Rivera (Photo by Chris Unger/Getty Images)

Ron Rivera is at $8.5 million and has been coaching in the NFL since 2011, his biggest claim to fame is taking the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl, losing to the Broncos in Super Bowl 50. Since then, it’s been pretty mediocre, Rivera has a less than .500 winning percentage at Washington.

18. Erik Spoelstra – $8.5 Million

Erik Spoelstra (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

Erik Spoelstra is an institution at the Miami Heat, being a part of the coaching staff since 1997 and taking over since 2008. Spoelstra paid back the organization with 2 NBA titles and 5 Eastern conference crowns.

17. Doc Rivers – $8.5 Million

Doc Rivers (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

Doc Rivers is a veteran NBA coach and is currently at the helm of the Philadelphia 76ers. Rivers won an NBA title in 2008 and today wants to take the Sixers to the promise land. Dealing with Ben Simmons makes Rivers earn his pay that’s for sure.

16. Matt Rhule – $8.6 Million

Matt Rhule (Photo by Cliff Hawkins/Getty Images)

The NFL can be generous, it’s the only way to explain that Matt Rhule earns more than Bruce Arians, a very good coach in college Rhule has found life in the NFL hard coaching the Carolina Panthers.

Urban Meyer (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Urban Meyer, coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL was a big-time college coach in the NCAA but in the NFL, he is on thin ice. Meyer makes a salary that is not indicative of the results, his first year in the NFL has been a mess.

13. John Harbaugh – $9 Million

John Harbaugh (Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images)

12. Frank Reich – $9 Million

Frank Reich (Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images)

Dabo Swinney (Photo by Jacob Kupferman/Getty Images)
