Nike, along with Under Armour, are the brands that could potentially continue as the official kit supplier of the Uruguayan national team from August 2024 onward.

For now, Nike is doing a lot of branding with Uruguay’s stars, but the fans are left out in the cold.

The report claims the German brand emerged as the winning bidder in a tender process that also had Nike and Puma interested in striking a deal with the Premier League giants.

Adidas, however, seemed to gain the upper hand to produce Liverpool’s uniforms for five seasons, from 2025-26 to 2029-30. If confirmed, this will be the brand’s third stint with the Merseyside outfit, returning to the club after 13 years.

Liverpool have already donned Adidas kits between 1985-1996 and 2006-2012. This time, the German manufacturer is reportedly improving what Nike currently pays the English club.

Nike is understood to hand Liverpool a base fee of £30 million ($37 million /€34.8 million) per year, though that number may end up surpassing £50 million per season thanks to royalty payments on net sales of replica clothing.

According to Sport, the Blaugrana could start to produce their own uniforms from next season, ending a decades-long association with the American brand. The deal with Nike runs through June 2028, but the club’s idea would be to reach an amicable agreement to rescind the contract this summer.

While ending the partnership prematurely means a risk for Barca, the board reportedly believes that switching for an in-house brand is less harmful for Nike than to be replaced by another brand.

Puma were understood to offer Barcelona €100m a year compared to the €85m the Catalans currently get from Nike. However, it seems that the club thinks the creation of an own brand could lead to more profit.

BLM already manufactures the club’s non-sport clothing and branded objects, so the idea would be for them to start producing the first team uniforms as well. Barca will still meet with Nike one more time, but the feeling is they won’t get what they want from the brand, so the in-house kits alternative already looks like a strong possibility.

Joan Laporta suggested Barca could produce their own kits

Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed the idea of producing their own jerseys a few weeks ago, when discussing the relationship status with Nike amid rumors of a breakup.

“There are three options: continue with Nike, take what the market offers us. And the third option would be to do it ourselves,” Laporta told Catalan radio station RAC1. “We already make our own clothing and we are not ruling out this option, even if there are safer options that the market offers us.“

Puma and Hummel have been mentioned as some of the options on the market in the event Barca leave Nike, but manufacturing the kits in-house may be the winning alternative after all. Either way, Nike is not expected to continue producing Barca’s uniforms next season.

“We have a situation that is not desirable because they do not replenish our equipment and because competitors pay us double what Nike pays us,” Laporta said. “We are looking into it. We’ve been working together for just over 20 years, but at the moment it’s difficult. Nike has not faced up to this. When we were told that competitors would pay us a lot more, they made an effort and we are grateful for that. But it’s not enough.“

Barcelona have done a series of manoeuvres since Laporta won the presidential elections in 2021 aiming to increase revenue, as the new chairman had to battle with a financial crisis inherited from Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency. The club, for instance, struck a deal with Spotify, who apart from becoming the main sponsor also got the naming rights for the Camp Nou.

“We are looking into it,” Laporta said when asked if Barcelona will terminate their contract with Nike. “We’ve been working together for just over 20 years, but at the moment it’s difficult. Nike has not faced up to this. When we were told that competitors would pay us a lot more, they made an effort and we are grateful for that. But it’s not enough.“

Laporta admitted that staying with Nike is still an option, but also mentioned two alternatives for Barcelona: one is to accept an offer from another supplier, while the other is the club to start producing its own uniforms for the first team.

Puma reportedly in talks with Barcelona

According to Sport, Puma is closing in on an agreement to become Barcelona’s kit supplier starting next season. The report claims the German brand would significantly improve what the Catalan side currently makes with Nike.

While the Blaugrana’s current deal reportedly sees them make a minimum of $114.75 million (€105 million) per year with the possibility of reaching $169 million (€155 million) with add-ons; the Puma deal would let Barça make $124.5 million (€115 million) a season with the possibility of rising to to $216 million.

Laporta’s comments are a testament to Barcelona’s desire to land a bigger contract, so a breakup with Nike is a real possibility. Only time will tell which route the club ultimately takes.

Now according to Forbes, Puma is set to step in next season at what is reported at $124.5 million plus add on’s a season for Barcelona. Talks have increased over the last two weeks and the two parties are close to signing a deal.

The only roadblock is Barcelona’s current deal with Nike, which runs until 2028, a source close to the ongoing talks with Puma stated that Puma will not sign any agreement until Barcelona formally terminates it’s deal with Nike.

According to Forbes, Nike stands to lose $378 million if Barcelona terminates their agreement prematurely. Nike has no intention of breaking the contract unless they are compensated by the Catalan club.

Puma has informed Barcelona they plan to work hard in promoting e-commerce for the club’s merchandise at a worldwide level, it would also give Puma two of the top clubs in the world, Manchester City and Barcelona.
