Jannik Sinner continues to rewrite the history books, dispatching Andrey Rublev at the Italian Open to eclipse Novak Djokovic for the all-time Masters 1000 win-streak record.
Jannik Sinner’s masterclass at the Italian Open has once again shifted the conversation regarding his place in the history books. With a clinical 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Andrey Rublev, the Italian sensation has officially eclipsed an all-time ATP Masters 1000 record previously held by Novak Djokovic.

Sinner’s triumph marks his 32nd consecutive win at the Masters level, breaking Djokovic’s storied record for the longest winning streak in the history of the format. Given his current torrid pace, the World No. 1 appears well-positioned to extend that historic mark even further as the tournament progresses.

The milestones don’t stop there. Sinner has now claimed 64 of his last 66 sets in Masters events, a staggering display of dominance. The Italian superstar continues to prove that regardless of the surface or the stakes, he is in a league of his own, rewriting the record books with every match.

Having recently surpassed Roger Federer’s personal best Masters streak, Sinner’s latest feat against Rublev serves as a definitive statement. This isn’t just a hot streak; it is a total takeover of the ATP circuit by a player firmly in his prime.

Jannik Sinner DESTROYING the ball against Andrey Rublev in Rome.

Oh my. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 pic.twitter.com/2f9XdY8Vx2
— The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) May 14, 2026

Sinner’s eye-popping stats by the numbers

The Italian star has signaled to the rest of the tour that he has evolved past the hurdles of last season, including his high-profile battles against rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic.

A closer look at Sinner’s historic run through the Masters 1000 circuit:

32 consecutive Masters 1000 match wins (All-time record)

18th career Masters semifinal at just 24 years old

50th overall career semifinal

2nd semifinal appearance in Rome

49–2 record over his last 51 matches

What’s next for Sinner in Rome?

With a spot in the semifinals secured, Sinner now awaits the winner of the clash between Casper Ruud and Luciano Darderi. Ruud has already weighed in on Sinner, offering high praise for the Italian’s evolving and nearly impenetrable baseline style.

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Dino Prizmic in his opening match at the Rome Open, snapping an impressive long-standing streak at the Italian Masters.
Novak Djokovic returned to the court for only his third tournament of 2026, but the World No.4 was stunned in his first match at the Rome Open, falling 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Croatia’s Dino Prizmic. With this early exit, Djokovic bids a premature farewell to the tournament and sees one of his most remarkable records at the Foro Italico come to an end.

Following the loss to the 20-year-old Prizmic, Djokovic snapped a streak of 18 consecutive victories in his opening matches at the Rome Masters 1000. On the other side of the net, Prizmic secured his second-ever win over a Top 10 opponent, adding to his previous upset of Ben Shelton at the Madrid Masters.

Djokovic appeared dominant at the start, cruising through the first set while dropping only two games. However, physical issues became apparent in the second set, visibly hampering his movement across the clay. Prizmic seized the opportunity, shifting to an aggressive style of play and capitalizing on every opening to claim the second set and the eventual decider.

Djokovic won’t play before Roland Garros

During his post-match press conference, the Serb confirmed that he does not intend to play any further tournaments before the French Open. This means he will arrive at the year’s second Grand Slam with only one competitive match played on clay.

“No. This year, no,” said Djokovic when asked if he would enter another event before Roland Garros. “I’ll just go to Paris straight”. The decision is a notable departure from his schedule over the last two seasons, during which he competed in the Geneva Open as a warm-up for Paris.

Djokovic says Rome preparation was ‘not ideal’

While the physical struggles during the second set were evident, Djokovic admitted that his buildup to the Italian Masters was compromised by lingering health concerns.

“I don’t recall the last time I had in the last couple years a preparation where I didn’t have any kind of physical issues or health issues coming into the tournament. There’s always something,” Djokovic told reporters during his press conference. “It’s kind of a new reality that I have to deal with. Yeah, it is frustrating. At the same time, it’s my decision to still perform in that kind of state and conditions. It is what it is”.

Jannik Sinner enters the Rome Open with a massive opportunity to complete the Career Golden Masters and match an incredible milestone held by Novak Djokovic.
Jannik Sinner was crowned champion at the Madrid Open after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, leaving him just one step away from equaling a towering record held by Novak Djokovic at the Masters 1000 level.

If the World No. 1 lifts the trophy at the Rome Open, he will achieve the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once—joining Djokovic as the only players in history to accomplish the feat.

The key distinction remains that the Serbian legend has done it twice. The 24-time Grand Slam champion first completed the set in 2018 at the Cincinnati Masters, before repeating the achievement at the same tournament in 2020.

Djokovic’s unmatchable Masters record

When it comes to the Masters 1000 circuit, Djokovic stands alone. The Serb has dominated these events, holding the record for the most titles with 40 trophies, a benchmark that currently seems untouchable.

Novak Djokovic with the 2023 Paris Masters 1000 trophy. (Getty Images)

Following the Serbian in the record books are Rafael Nadal (36 titles), Roger Federer (28 titles), Andre Agassi (17 titles), and Andy Murray (14 titles). While the Italian currently has nine Masters trophies in his cabinet, he has the unique chance to match a specific record that no one besides Djokovic has been able to touch.

Sinner breaks Djokovic and Nadal’s streak

In his pursuit of the Career Golden Masters, Sinner has already snatched a record from the hands of both Djokovic and Nadal. With his victory at the Madrid Open, the Italian became the first player in history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments.

The previous record held by both legends was four consecutive titles. However, a dominant run through Paris (2025), Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and now Madrid has allowed Sinner to set a new standard on the ATP Tour.

Jannik Sinner defeated Arthur Fils to advance to the Madrid Open final, breaking a long-standing Novak Djokovic record for Masters 1000 consistency in the process.
Jannik Sinner remains unstoppable on his quest for the Madrid Open title, securing his spot in the final with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 victory over Arthur Fils in the semifinals. By reaching the championship match, the Italian has officially dethroned Novak Djokovic to become the youngest player ever to reach the final of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.

At just 24 years old, Sinner surpassed the record set by Djokovic, who completed the set at age 25 when he reached the 2012 Shanghai final. For comparison, Rafael Nadal (Cincinnati 2013) and Roger Federer (Paris 2011) didn’t achieve this milestone until they were 27 and 30, respectively.

The World No. 1 will now face the winner of the Alexander Zverev vs Alexander Blockx semifinal on Sunday, May 3. Should Sinner lift the trophy, he will break another joint record held by Djokovic and Nadal, becoming the first player in the Open Era to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.

Sinner aiming for the Career Golden Masters

Sinner is now on the verge of completing the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once—an elite feat currently only achieved by Djokovic.

Pure Sinner-ma 🎬@janniksin soars into his first Madrid final after a brilliant straight sets victory over Fils! @MutuaMadridOpen | #MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/d905MrbSUQ
— ATP Tour (@atptour) May 1, 2026

To check the first box of this ultimate goal, Sinner must win Sunday’s final in Madrid. He would then need to claim the title at the Italian Open in Rome, scheduled for May 7–17, to finalize the sweep.

Sinner extends historic winning streak

With his victory over Fils, Sinner extended his incredible Masters 1000 winning streak to 27 consecutive matches, the fourth-longest in the history of the tour. If he secures the Madrid title, he will reach 28 wins, moving just one victory shy of equaling Federer’s personal best.

Looking ahead to Rome, Sinner will have the opportunity to surpass Djokovic’s legendary marks of 30 and 31 consecutive wins, which would establish a new all-time ATP record.

Jannik Sinner defeated Rafael Jodar at the Madrid Masters to join an exclusive group alongside Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and other stars after achieving a rare ATP feat.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner ended the fairy-tale run of teenage sensation Rafael Jodar in the Madrid Masters quarterfinals, securing a 6-2, 7-6(0) victory. The win propels the Italian into the semifinals and cements his place in tennis history alongside the Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

By reaching the final four in Madrid, Sinner has now reached the semifinals of all nine Masters 1000 tournaments. He becomes only the sixth player to complete the semifinal set, joining Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Andy Murray, and Alexander Zverev.

Furthermore, Sinner has reached the semifinals of the first four Masters 1000 events of the season (Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid). He joins Federer (2006) and Nadal (2010, 2011) as the only players to achieve this feat while ranked World No. 1.

Sinner chasing the Career Golden Masters

Sinner is currently enjoying a dominant season, having swept all four Masters 1000 titles so far in 2026. He is now on a collision course with history as he seeks the Career Golden Masters—winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments at least once.

If Sinner triumphs in Madrid and follows it up with a win at the upcoming Rome Masters, he will complete the collection. Currently, Novak Djokovic is the only player in the Open Era to achieve this feat, completing it in 2018 and incredibly repeating the cycle in 2020.

Sinner praises rising star Jodar

The Italian faced a stern test against the 19-year-old local favorite. Jodar’s incredible run in Madrid included his first Top 10 win over Alex de Minaur and a victory over Joao Fonseca. While Sinner cruised through the first set, Jodar pushed the second to a tiebreak. However, Sinner’s experience shone through as he swept the breaker 7-0.

“He pushed me to the limit,” Sinner said of Jodar in his post-match interview. “He’s an incredible player. I tried to be ready as much as I could. I’m incredibly happy; it was a very high-quality match. I got a bit lucky in the second set, but also had a bit of experience. I’m obviously very happy to be in the semis here for the first time. It means a lot to me”.

Jannik Sinner is preparing for his debut at the Madrid Open, where he has the chance to break the historic Masters 1000 record currently shared by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Despite initial doubts regarding his participation, Jannik Sinner will compete in the Madrid Open with a chance to shatter an unprecedented record. If the Italian secures the title in the Spanish capital, he will become the first player in ATP Masters 1000 history (since the series began in 1990) to win five consecutive titles, breaking a record held by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Sinner recently joined the elite company of Djokovic and Nadal by winning four straight Masters 1000 trophies. His current streak includes victories at Paris (2025), Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo (2026).

While Nadal achieved a four-title streak in 2013 and Djokovic accomplished the feat three times throughout his career, neither was able to reach five in a row without an interruption in participation.

Sinner with a huge chance to gain ground in the ATP Rankings

The Italian star possesses a prime opening to amplify his lead in the standings and cement his status as World No. 1 for the foreseeable future. Following the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic from the Madrid Masters, Sinner has emerged as the clear frontrunner to claim the trophy.

Jannik Sinner celebrates after victory against Carlos Alcaraz at Monte-Carlo. (Getty Images)

Sinner maintains a distinct tactical edge: he carries no point-protection obligations for this event, having missed the 2025 edition. Consequently, he faces zero risk of a points deduction and stands to accumulate up to 1,000 fresh points by clinching the championship, vastly increasing the numerical cushion between himself and his Spanish rival.

When is Sinner playing?

With the qualifying rounds concluded, the world’s top-ranked player now knows his path forward. Sinner is scheduled to make his 2026 Madrid Masters debut against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi on Friday, April 24, with the match expected to begin around 10 AM ET.

Looking ahead at the Italian’s projected journey through the bracket, he could face a challenging Round of 16 encounter with Tommy Paul before potentially meeting Joao Fonseca or Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner could surpass Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for a historic Masters 1000 winning streak record, but his presence at the Madrid Open has yet to be confirmed.
Following the withdrawals of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz from the Madrid Masters 1000, all eyes are on Jannik Sinner to see if he will follow suit or compete in the Spanish capital. Should he participate, the Italian has the chance to break a record he currently shares with Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for the most consecutive Masters 1000 titles won.

Currently, Sinner, Djokovic, and Nadal are the only players in the Open Era to have won four consecutive Masters 1000 titles. The distinction lies in the frequency: the Serbian legend achieved this feat on three separate occasions (2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16), while the Spaniard accomplished it in 2013.

Sinner joined this elite group following his recent string of victories in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo. If he triumphs in Madrid, he would become the first player to win five consecutive titles at this level. While Djokovic previously won five tournaments in a row in 2011 and 2015, those streaks were interrupted by non-participation in Monte-Carlo and Madrid, respectively.

Will Sinner participate in the Madrid Masters?

Despite having an incredible opportunity to etch his name into the history books, Sinner’s participation in Madrid remains unconfirmed. Following his victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Italian noted that he would take a few days of rest and evaluate the decision to play in Madrid with his team.

Jannik Sinner after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo final. (Getty Images)

Regardless of his final decision, Sinner is still expected to travel to the city. According to the Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, the World No. 1 will attend the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards at Cibeles Palace, with a final decision on his tournament status expected in the coming days.

Sinner could extend his lead in the ATP Rankings

After reclaiming the World No. 1 spot following his Monte-Carlo triumph, Sinner has a golden opportunity to extend his lead over Carlos Alcaraz. Having missed last year’s edition, the Italian has zero points to defend in Madrid, meaning he could add up to 1,000 points to his total with a title win.

Alcaraz was in a similar position, having also missed the 2025 tournament. However, following his recent withdrawal due to injury, the Spaniard will now have to focus on defending his points at the upcoming Rome Masters instead.

Novak Djokovic has announced he will not play the Madrid Masters 1000 this season, while the participation of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner remains uncertain.
The Madrid Masters 1000 will be missing one of its biggest names, as Novak Djokovic recently confirmed he will skip the Spanish tournament. Fans are now holding out hope that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will headline the event, though their status remains up in the air.

“Madrid, unfortunately I won’t be able to compete Mutua Madrid Open this year. I’m continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!” Djokovic announced via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Djokovic last competed on March 11, where he suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-7(5) defeat to Jack Draper in the Round of 16 at the Indian Wells Masters. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is reportedly prioritizing reaching peak physical condition in time for the 2026 Roland Garros.

Alcaraz drops out too

Carlos Alcaraz’s recent wrist injury, which forced his withdrawal from the Barcelona Open, has cast a shadow over his availability for the Madrid Masters, scheduled for April 22 to May 3.

— Carlos Alcaraz (@carlosalcaraz) April 17, 2026

Finally, the Spaniard recently announced through his social media that he will not be able to participate in the tournament. “There is news that is incredibly hard to share. Madrid is home, one of the most special places on the calendar for me, and that’s why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row…” Alcaraz wrote.

Sinner’s situation

On the other side, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner indicated after his Monte-Carlo Masters victory that he would take some time off to evaluate his schedule with his team before committing to Madrid.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian still plans to travel to the Spanish capital to attend the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards at Cibeles Palace. A final decision regarding his participation in the Masters 1000 is expected shortly after the ceremony.

When could Djokovic be back?

In his announcement, Djokovic did not specify which tournament would mark his return to the tour. However, in 2025, the Serb opted to skip the Rome Masters after an early exit in Madrid to save himself for Roland Garros—a strategy that saw him reach the semifinals before falling to Sinner. With the World No. 4 hungry for a 25th Grand Slam title, perhaps he will employ a similar calculated approach this season to maximize his chances in Paris.

Carlos Alcaraz has reached 300 career victories in record time, outpacing the marks set by Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.
Carlos Alcaraz’s title defense at the Monte-Carlo Masters remains in high gear after a commanding 6-3, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Alexander Bublik. The win secured more than just a semifinal berth; it marked Alcaraz’s 300th career ATP victory, a milestone he reached faster than Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Reaching the mark in just 367 matches (300-67), Alcaraz now sits tied with John McEnroe as the third-fastest player in the Open Era to achieve the feat. By comparison, Nadal required 373 matches to reach 300 wins, while Djokovic took 389 and Federer 423.

Alcaraz’s rapid ascent is a testament to his immediate impact on the tour. While Federer and Djokovic faced steeper learning curves in their early twenties, Alcaraz has maintained an elite win percentage since his debut.

At just 22 years old, the Spaniard has already captured 7 Grand Slam titles—including his historic 2026 Australian Open win that completed his Career Grand Slam—and 19 additional ATP trophies.

Which two players reached 300 wins quicker than Alcaraz?

Despite the Spaniard’s surprising statistics, there are two players who achieved 300 career wins faster than Alcaraz. Jimmy Connors did it in 363 matches, while the legendary Rod Laver achieved it in 355, making him nearly impossible to surpass.

What about Sinner?

Alcaraz’s biggest competition on the ATP Tour today is World No. 2 Jannik Sinner, with whom he has already played seven finals, including three Grand Slams in 2025. However, the Spaniard outpaces the Italian in the race to 300 wins, as Sinner took 381 matches to reach the milestone.

The Monte-Carlo Masters is slowly preparing to host another final between the two stars after both players cleared their quarterfinal hurdles. Sinner will now face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, while Alcaraz will take on the winner of the match between Valentin Vacherot and Alex de Minaur.

Jannik Sinner defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Monte-Carlo Masters to secure a historic achievement previously reached only by Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.
Jannik Sinner cruised into the Monte-Carlo Masters semifinals on Friday with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime. With the win, the Italian star secured an impressive milestone that places him alongside Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer as the only players to achieve the feat.

By taking down the Canadian, Sinner extended his winning streak to 20 consecutive matches at the ATP Masters 1000 level. He becomes just the fourth player in the history of the series (dating back to 1990) to reach that mark, joining the legendary “Big Three” of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.

The World No. 2 will now face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals after the German dispatched rising star Joao Fonseca. Sinner remains focused on his first title in Monaco as he pursues another record held by Djokovic: becoming only the second player to win the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters back-to-back.

Sinner finds rhythm after set streak ends

The five-time Grand Slam champion entered the quarterfinals boasting a dominant run of 18 consecutive Masters 1000 match wins without dropping a single set.

Jannik Sinner of Italy celebrates defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime. (Getty Images)

While his streak of 37 consecutive sets won finally ended in a second-set tiebreak against Tomas Machac in the previous round, Sinner noted that his performance against Auger-Aliassime was a significant step forward in form.

“I feel like it was a step forwards today,” Sinner said during his post-match interview. “It was a very tough match. I knew I had to get better in certain areas. The serve is not there yet, where I would love it [to be], but all things considered I’m very happy. Yesterday I was very tired. I recovered very well… Let’s see what’s coming tomorrow, but in any case, very happy to be back in the semis”.

When is Sinner playing vs Zverev?

With the semifinal bracket nearly set, Sinner is scheduled to face Zverev on Saturday, April 11. On the other side of the draw, Carlos Alcaraz advanced by defeating Alexander Bublik and awaits the winner of the match between local Valentin Vacherot and Alex de Minaur.

After advancing to the quarterfinals at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Jannik Sinner is on the verge of matching a rare historic feat previously achieved only by Novak Djokovic.
Jannik Sinner battled through a tough three-set test on Thursday, defeating Tomas Machac 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-3 to secure his place in the Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinals. The Italian remains on track for his first career title in Monaco, a victory that would see him join Novak Djokovic in an exclusive statistical club.

Should Sinner go on to win the tournament, he would become just the second player in ATP history to sweep the Miami Open and Monte-Carlo Masters back-to-back. Djokovic is currently the only man to accomplish this, having pulled off the “Sunshine-to-Clay” transition in 2015.

To reach that milestone, Sinner must first move past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals. A win there would set up a semifinal clash against either rising star Joao Fonseca or third seed Alexander Zverev, with a potential showdown against Carlos Alcaraz looming in the final.

Sinner’s record-breaking set streak snapped

While Sinner secured the win, he saw a historic personal streak come to an end against Machac. The World No. 2 lost his first set in an ATP Masters 1000 event since last October, ending a run of 37 consecutive sets won at the Masters level.

Sinner’s dominance began at the 2025 Paris Masters and continued through a historic start to 2026. Last month, he became the first player to complete the “Sunshine Double”—winning Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back—without dropping a single set. Machac’s second-set tiebreak win on Thursday marked the first time Sinner had been pushed to a third set in a Masters tournament in over six months.

The battle for World No.1

The stakes in Monte-Carlo extend beyond the trophy, as the ATP No. 1 ranking is once again within Sinner’s reach. The Italian controls his own destiny; a title win this weekend would guarantee his return to the top of the rankings, regardless of other results.

However, Sinner could also reclaim the throne even without the title. If Carlos Alcaraz fails to reach the final, Sinner simply needs a runner-up finish to displace the Spaniard and return to World No. 1 for the first time since November 2025.
