Brittni Mason: Story

Early in her life, Brittni Mason got involved with sports to help her dealwith the difficulties in her left shoulder and arm, and she has been involved in a wide range of disciplines since then, before embarking on track and field.

She went through gymnastics, swimming, and even was a ballerina before joining physical contact sports. Mason played basketball for a while, and it became clear to her that sports were helpful for her arm.

At 10 years of age, she began her path ontrack and field, where she would go on to have a fantastic – and early – rise. After settinghigh school records and winningchampionships, Mason continued her way to success in college, where she got to know she was eligible for the Paralympics.

Brittni Mason: Disability

Brittni Mason was born with Erb’s palsy, a form of brachial plexus palsy that usually occurs during a difficult delivery of the baby. It affects the nerves that control the muscles of the arm, causing loss of motion.

It has affected Mason’s left shoulder and arm, but sports played a big part in helping her using her arm more and battling with itsrange of motion. Now, the Eastern Michigan product is ready to keep on writing history.

Brittni Mason: World Record

Even though she got involved inthe 2019 DubaiWorld Para Athletics Championships on relatively short notice, with less than a month of anticipation. However, that didn’t prevent her from succeeding.

Brittni Mason not only stole the show in Dubai, winning gold, but also set the world record for the 100m dash with 11.89, surpassing Deja Young‘s 11.92 mark. Categories of the 2021 Paralympics

In the Paralympics Games, athletes are divided in ten main disability categories. As there are many conditions and disabilities, the classification of athletes is important to ensure that the competition is fair. Not all the sports are for all the conditions.

As the IPC explains, the classification “determines who can compete in the sport and groups these athletes based on the impact their impairment has on the key activities of the sport.” So, these are the main categories:

Impaired Muscle Power: Athletes with a health condition that reduces or eliminates their ability to voluntarily contract their muscles in order to move or generate force. Ex.: spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida.

Impaired Passive Range of Movement: Athletes that have a restriction or a lack of passive movement in one or more joints. Example: arthrogryposis.

Limb Deficiency: Athletes who have total or partial absence of bones or joints as a consequence of trauma (amputation), illness or congenital limb deficiency.

Leg Length Difference: Athletes who have a difference in the length of their legs as a result of a disturbance of limb growth, or as a result of trauma.

Short Stature: Athletes who have a reduced length in the bones of the upper limbs, lower limbs and/or trunk.

Hypertonia: Athletes who have an increase in muscle tension and a reduced ability of a muscle to stretch caused by damage to the central nervous system.

Ataxia: Athletes with uncoordinated movements caused by damage to the central nervous system.

Athetosis: Athletes who have continual slow involuntary movements.

Vision Impairment: Athletes who have reducedor no vision at all.

Intellectual Impairment: Athletes who have a restriction in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour in which affects conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills.

The official number of athletes representing the United States at the Paralympic Games is 242. Only four countries, apart from the U.S., bring more than 200 athletes to this edition of the Paralympics: Brazil, Japan, ROC and UK. But beyond the quantity, what matters is the quality.

United States are the big winners of the Paralympic Games in both versions, Summer and Winter. Since 1960 the domain has been total by the United States. 847 gold medals, 778 silver medals and 742 bronze medals. This year could be as epic as any for the U.S. team.
