Kelly Oubre Jr. admits frustration with NBA free agency despite strong numbers with the 76ers

Kelly Oubre Jr. is another of the many players who will have to face free agency, and he had to offer a harsh critique despite putting up good numbers, especially regarding what he has done with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Kelly Oubre Jr. faced the media with a heavy heart after the Philadelphia 76ers were eliminated from the 2026 NBA playoffs by the New York Knicks. Following a 144-114 loss in Game 4, Oubre spoke candidly about his love for the city and his desire to stay, while also expressing significant frustration with how his consistent production hasn’t always translated into long-term security.

Reflecting on his journey, Oubre Jr. is being as honest as Joel Embiid was recently about his time with the 76ers and the weight of professional expectations. “I’ve averaged 20 points in this league and still find myself barely getting any contracts,” Oubre admitted, noting that while he loves Philadelphia, the uncertainty of free agency remains a tough road for him every summer.

The versatile forward believes he has evolved as a player and hope his improved maturity will be reflected in his next deal. “I hope I did myself a good service by being more efficient, slowing down, and playing better overall basketball,” he added, emphasizing that his goal is to provide stability for a team.

Oubre Jr. career stats and contract

Oubre Jr. has been a vital part of the Sixers‘ rotation, averaging 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game throughout the 2025-26 regular season. His career highlights include a peak scoring season with the Charlotte Hornets where he averaged 20.3 points, proving he can be a high-volume offensive threat when given the minutes and a consistent role.

Knicks fans TOOK OVER Philly and the Sixers bench is DEVESTATED

Kelly Oubre Jr: "I don't know, man." pic.twitter.com/BfRgumiCYw
— BrickCenter (@BrickCenter_) May 9, 2026

In terms of his financial situation, Oubre recently played under an $8.38 million player option for the 2025-26 season, which he exercised to remain in Philadelphia. Over his ten-year NBA career, he has earned over $82 million across various teams, but he has frequently moved between franchises on short-term deals rather than securing a long-term home.

As he enters unrestricted free agency this summer, there is a strong possibility he remains with the 76ers if both sides can agree on a multi-year valuation. Given his defensive versatility and his connection with the fan base, Oubre Jr. has made a compelling case to be a permanent fixture in the “Process” alongside stars like Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

https://bolavip.com/en/nba/joel-embiid-gets-honest-about-legacy-after-another-76ers-playoff-disappointment

Joel Embiid has once again fallen short with the Philadelphia 76ers in what has been one failed attempt after another, but this time he was more open in speaking about what truly matters to him.
Joel Embiid faced another crushing chapter in his professional career today, as the Philadelphia 76ers were officially eliminated from the 2026 NBA playoffs. Following a definitive 144-114 loss that completed a four-game sweep by the New York Knicks, the former MVP offered a raw and vulnerable perspective on where he stands in the game’s history.

Reflecting on the sweep in the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals, Embiid did not shy away from the pain of the moment while maintaining his focus on life beyond the hardwood. “I want to win more than anyone. It s—- to lose. I haven’t won anything, so that hurts,“ he admitted during the post-game press conference at the Wells Fargo Center.

The superstar center emphasized that while his competitive fire remains, his identity is no longer tied solely to championship trophies. “But to go home and raise [his son], raise my daughter, look at my wife in the eyes and understand I’m a good man… Really, that’s all that matters,“ Embiid concluded, highlighting his growth as a family man.

76ers failures since 2014

Since Embiid was drafted in 2014, the “Process” era has been defined by regular-season brilliance that rarely translates to postseason glory. One of the most heartbreaking moments occurred in 2019, when Kawhi Leonard’s famous quadruple-bounce shot in Game 7 sent the Sixers home in the second round, leaving a crying Embiid to wonder what could have been.

Joel Embiid says “I hate losing”

But Joel says he feels this was a successful season being able to come back. He thought he was done. He says they figured out the knee to be healthy next season pic.twitter.com/eyfvjYMsri
— John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) May 10, 2026

In 2021, the team suffered another historic collapse as the top-seeded 76ers lost a seven-game series to the underdog Atlanta Hawks. That failure was punctuated by a late-game hesitation from Ben Simmons and multiple blown leads, marking one of the most frustrating exits of Embiid’s career.

Most recently, despite the addition of stars like Paul George and the rise of Tyrese Maxey, the team has continued to hit a ceiling in the second round. Today’s sweep by the Knicks marks a decade of the Embiid era without a single trip to the Conference Finals, leaving Philadelphia fans searching for answers after yet another promising season ended in disappointment.

The Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey commented on an injury concern that held him back from reaching his best level during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks.
The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a tough loss against the New York Knicks after losing Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden, already falling behind 2-0 in the series, with performances that left much to be desired on the 76ers’ side, and one of the players under scrutiny was Tyrese Maxey.

It did not help matters whatsoever that Maxey jammed his injured right finger; after the game, the 76ers guard admitted to losing his confidence on drives and navigating the Knicks‘ double teams, as per Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice.

And while Maxey was productive for most of the night as the 76ers kept pace with the Knicks despite being shorthanded, he could not get it done in crunch time, scoring just five points in the final frame as Philadelphia fell short, 108-102.

Maxey’s difficult game

Maxey has been a trooper for the 76ers all season long, and with Embiid out, he had to log an extraordinarily heavy workload, playing 47 minutes in Game 2. The fatigue seemed to catch up with Maxey, as he shot just 9-for-23 on the night to finish with 26 points.

Tyrese Maxey #0 of the Philadelphia 76ers reacts.

Maxey also turned the ball over six times during the game, and his finger injury could have affected his ball-handling. The 76ers’ star guard needed help controlling the ball and attacking the rim, and with Embiid out, the responsibility of leading the team should not have rested solely on his shoulders.

Hearing that Maxey apparently lost confidence while dribbling against double teams had to be concerning for 76ers fans. Game 3 was set to be crucial for the 76ers, and Maxey, with only one full day of rest between Game 2 and Game 3, had to recover quickly.

The 76ers’ numbers during Game 2

The two-time NBA All-Star guard logged 47 minutes, scored 26 points, and dished out six assists. The Knicks turned Philadelphia’s 18 turnovers into 23 points. George ranked second in blame. The 76ers needed their veteran co-star to shoulder part of the offensive load and ease Maxey’s burden against one of the league’s most physical defenses. Instead, George delivered 19 points on an inefficient 7-for-18 shooting. Five made three-pointers masked the bigger problem.

VJ Edgecombe showed real promise with an efficient 17 points, but his four turnovers were especially costly in the six-point loss. But the overall performance from the 76ers left a lot to be desired, especially after coming off a Game 7 win against the Boston Celtics.

With momentum already shifting in the series, the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for a crucial Game 2 against the New York Knicks, as every update on Joel Embiid’s condition looms large over a must-win Eastern Conference battle.
Joel Embiid is officially out for for Game 2, meaning the Philadelphia 76ers star will not suit up tonight against the New York Knicks as the team looks to even the series at Madison Square Garden.

The former MVP is dealing with a right ankle sprain, but multiple reports confirm the injury is not considered severe enough to keep him off the floor in this crucial Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup.

His status remains one of the biggest talking points heading into Game 2 after a disappointing opener, where Philadelphia was blown out 137–98 and struggled to establish any offensive rhythm with him on the court.

How and when did Joel Embiid get injured?

Joel Embiid is currently managing a right ankle sprain that first appeared during the latter part of the 2025–26 regular season and has been aggravated throughout the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks.

Joel Embiid reacts during the first quarter of a game against the Boston Celtics (Source: Elsa/Getty Images)

According to recent injury reports, the issue dates back to late December and has resurfaced multiple times as Philadelphia has pushed through a deep postseason run, including their seven-game series against the Boston Celtics.

The injury was not caused by a single dramatic play, but rather by accumulation of wear and tear combined with heavy minutes in high-stakes games. He also dealt with a right hip contusion in Game 7 of the first round.

More recently, he was seen visibly limited during Game 1 against New York, where the Knicks exploited his mobility on defensive switches. Philadelphia has been carefully monitoring his ankle response, with his status updated game-by-game depending on pain management and pre-game testing.

How important has Joel Embiid been to the 76ers’ roster?

Joel Embiid is absolutely the centerpiece of the Philadelphia 76ers, functioning as their offensive engine, defensive anchor and overall identity-shaping superstar whenever he is on the court.

Joel Embiid looks on during the fourth quarter of a game against the Boston Celtics (Source: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

His impact is so significant that Philadelphia’s performance swings dramatically depending on whether he plays or not, making him the most influential player on the roster by a wide margin.

Statistically, the difference is undeniable. With him available, the Sixers maintain a positive net rating and remain one of the more efficient two-way teams in the league, while without him they drop into negative territory and struggle to generate consistent half-court offense.

In the 2026 playoffs, he has continued to deliver elite production, averaging 28 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists per game, confirming his role as a true all-around hub rather than just a scorer.

Even when not at full strength, his gravitational impact is visible in every possession. Teams defend differently, rotations tighten earlier and Philadelphia’s offensive structure becomes far more predictable when he is off the floor.

The Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid provided an explanation for the loss in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks.
The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a tough loss in Game 1 against the New York Knicks at TD Garden in the conference semifinals of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, something that could prove costly, but Joel Embiid wanted to stay optimistic and believed the result was evidence of fatigue.

Embiid pointed to fatigue as a factor while stopping short of using it as an excuse. Embiid addressed reporters Tuesday in comments shared via SNY on X, acknowledging the physical toll of Philadelphia’s previous series. “Coming from the series we had and the physicality we displayed, I would like to think that maybe guys were tired. It’s not an excuse though, onto Game 2, you know, down 1-0, so focus on the next one.”

The 76ers entered the matchup after a seven-game series, both emotionally and physically demanding, against the Boston Celtics. Philadelphia came back from a 3-1 deficit, ultimately securing the victory in Game 7 on the road, at TD Garden, on Saturday night. The quick turnaround to the next round left little time for recovery.

The tough Game 1 for Embiid

In Game 1 against New York, Embiid struggled to find rhythm. The former MVP finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and one assist while shooting 3-11 from the field. He was efficient at the free throw line, going 8-9, but logged only 25 minutes as the game quickly slipped out of reach.

Joel Embiid #21 of the Philadelphia 76ers attempts a free throw against the Boston Celtics.

The Knicks capitalized early, building a significant lead and maintaining control throughout. Their defensive pressure and pace exposed Philadelphia’s lack of energy, particularly on the interior, where Embiid typically anchored both ends of the floor.

When asked what it would take to respond in Game 2, Embiid emphasized recovery and a return to physical play. “Hopefully, we get a good rest so we’re ready to go… I mean we’ve been playing every other day… so I don’t ever know. But yeah, just get a good rest and go out and display the physicality we had in our last series.”

What is next for the 76ers?

Philadelphia’s ability to rebound quickly would be critical as the series continued. The team now trailed 1-0 and faced limited time to adjust before Game 2. The 76ers would look to even the series against the Knicks on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET before the matchup shifted to Xfinity Mobile Arena.

After bouncing the Celtics to advance, the Philadelphia 76ers now turn their attention to the New York Knicks, with star guard Tyrese Maxey weighing in on the high-stakes matchup ahead.
Tyrese Maxey emerged as a primary catalyst for the Philadelphia 76ers in their hard-fought series victory over the Boston Celtics. Alongside Joel Embiid, who issued a rallying cry to the Philly faithful, the Sixers managed to bounce one of the NBA’s most storied franchises. Now, their sights are set on another heavyweight: the New York Knicks.

Anticipation is at a fever pitch for this Eastern Conference Semifinal showdown, a direct rematch of their 2024 clash. Speaking to the media, Maxey reflected on the history and the razor-thin margins that defined their last postseason encounter. “I think we ended up losing 4–2, but the margin was like minus-one or something like that. It was really close. So I expect nothing less. I expect nothing less, man,” Maxey said.

With the 2024 loss still fresh, Philadelphia is looking to make a statement on the semifinals stage. After a disappointing early exit last season, this series serves as a prime opportunity to prove to the NBA world that the Sixers are legitimate title contenders. Head coach Nick Nurse echoed that sentiment, noting the high stakes as both teams vie for a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals.

A storied postseason rivalry

The Sixers and Knicks share a rich postseason history, having squared off 10 times in the playoffs dating back to the 1950s. This latest chapter adds to a rivalry that saw the two franchises meet in three consecutive seasons during the league’s early years.

Regular season recap: A dead heat

The regular-season series suggests a grueling battle ahead. Philadelphia and New York split their four meetings in 2025-26, with three of the four contests being decided by single digits.

Jan 3, 2026: Sixers win 130–119 (at MSG)

Jan 24, 2026: Knicks win 112–109 (at Philly)

Feb 11, 2026: Knicks win 138–89 (49-point blowout at Philly)

Mar 19, 2026: Knicks win 93–92 (at MSG)

With the series split at 2–2 and a trip to the Conference Finals on the line, the stage is set for a classic. While Philly and New York prepare for Game 1, the rest of the East remains in flux, with the other semifinal matchup still awaiting the winner of an impending Game 7.

Joel Embiid is pleading with Philadelphia 76ers fans to bring the noise for the upcoming Conference Semifinals series against the New York Knicks.
Joel Embiid is calling on Philadelphia 76ers fans to protect their home-court advantage as the team prepares for a big rematch against the New York Knicks. The superstar center expressed how vital local support will be for the upcoming series, urging supporters to ensure the atmosphere remains firmly in Philadelphia’s favor.

According to Derek Bodner on X, Embiid issued a direct challenge to the fanbase to prevent a repeat of previous postseason takeovers. He stated, “I have a message for our fans. Last time we played the Knicks, it felt like [Philly] was Madison Square Garden East. We’re gonna need the support. Don’t sell your tickets. This is bigger than you…If you need money, I got you”.

The plea comes at a time when Nick Nurse knows what makes the Knicks dangerous for the 76ers. Embiid believes that having a loud, loyal crowd will be essential to matching that intensity and overcoming a New York team that has already proven it can win on the road.

Embiid finds peace in trusting his teammates during the 2026 run

Reflecting on his personal performance, Embiid shared that he no longer feels the crushing weight of having to do everything himself to secure a victory. “I’ve always taken the blame for everything that has happened,” he admitted, adding that it “means a lot” to finally be in a position where he can trust his teammates to deliver in big moments.

Joel Embiid on this year’s Sixers compared to previous teams:

“No shade to the guys that have played here but this is different.
The 76ers currently lead the all-time playoff games record against the Knicks 23-16 and hold a 5-3 edge in series wins, though the sting of their 2024 first-round exit still lingers. During that last meeting, New York won 4-2 before losing an epic seven-game series to the Pacers, but now the two rivals meet again two years later.

With elite scorers like Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Maxey set to clash alongside the Embiid-Towns battle, the star center emphasized that “you can’t win alone”. He believes this year’s squad has the necessary depth to finally overcome the hurdle that has kept Philadelphia from the conference finals for so long.

76ers head coach Nick Nurse is already bracing for a physical war against the New York Knicks, warning that Jalen Brunson and New York's rebounding present a massive challenge following Philadelphia's Game 7 triumph.
Nick Nurse is already shifting his focus toward the New York Knicks after leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a gritty Game 7 victory over the Boston Celtics. The head coach acknowledged the difficult road ahead, noting that the Knicks present a unique challenge due to their size and a starting lineup he described as “incredible.”

According to a post shared on X by Kristian Winfield, Nurse reflected on the regular-season series, asking, “What did we go 2-2 against them? Nobody could win at home?“ He emphasized that New York has bolstered their bench and can adapt to different styles, stating, “They can play one-big, two bigs. Brunson’s obviously a big problem.”

The coach made it clear that the physical nature of the upcoming series will be a primary concern for his squad. “The rebounding’s a big problem. A much bigger team in general all-around than we just saw,” Nurse remarked during his postgame presser. He concluded by saying that facing the Knicks is going to be a “tremendous challenge” for the surging Sixers.

Nurse demands an immediate mindset shift for the semifinals

Nurse gave his players less than two hours to celebrate their historic Game 7 win, telling them they can enjoy it until midnight before focusing on the next task. He noted that they have only won seven games so far, reminding the team, “This might just be 7 out of the 28 games“ required to reach their ultimate championship goal.

pic.twitter.com/RIAU7k7pev
— BNFA aka NBAnews4All (@__BNFA) May 3, 2026

To secure the win in Boston, Nurse shortened his bench, explaining that he felt that specific group was playing well together and he wanted his “best players on the floor.” He dismissed concerns about fatigue during the playoff push, famously stating, “If we don’t win, we have the whole summer to recover from being tired.”

Analysts like Andrew S on X are already highlighting the mouth-watering matchups, such as Tyrese Maxey versus Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns facing Joel Embiid. With stars like Mikal Bridges and Paul George also in the mix, this series is expected to be a “hard-fought battle” between two teams that know each other’s schemes perfectly.

Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia 76ers to a stunning Game 7 win over the Boston Celtics, later revealing how comments from Payton Pritchard provided the ultimate motivation to dominate at TD Garden.
Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia 76ers to a monumental Game 7 victory over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden, but he didn’t leave the floor before addressing Payton Pritchard. The superstar center noted that certain comments from the Celtics guard served as extra motivation.

According to a post shared on X by “Oh No He Didn’t,” Embiid took direct aim at the guard’s pre-game confidence. He stated, “I saw #11 on the team before I came back he said they didn’t care if I was playing or not,” highlighting how the perceived slight fueled his dominant performance. Following the win, 76ers fans crashed the Celtics postgame show with bold chants to celebrate the historic upset.

Embiid further elaborated on how the lack of a specific defensive focus from his opponents allowed him to find his rhythm early. “When the other team doesn’t worry about you and have some solid game plan or being prepared for you he helps you have better games,“ the MVP candidate remarked. He concluded his thoughts with a sarcastic tip of the cap, adding, “I thank #11 for that.”

Embiid and Maxey make history while breaking the Boston hex

The victory marks a massive turning point for the franchise, as it is the first time in eight years that Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers have successfully defeated the Celtics in a playoff series. After years of postseason heartbreak and early exits at the hands of their division rivals, the Sixers finally “got over the hump” by delivering a resilient performance.

Joel Embiid calling out Payton Pritchard:

“I saw #11 on the team before I came back he said they didn’t care if I was playing or not…when the other team doesn’t worry about you and have some solid game plan or being prepared for you he helps you have better games.
Embiid and Tyrese Maxey cemented their legacy in this Game 7 by becoming only the third duo in NBA history to each record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a winner-take-all game. They join the legendary ranks of Elgin Baylor and Jerry West (1963), as well as Baylor and Wilt Chamberlain (1970), as the only pairs to ever achieve those elite statistical benchmarks.

By securing this win, the Sixers have not only advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals but have also exercised the demons of past failures against Boston. With Embiid playing at an all-time high and Maxey proving to be the perfect secondary star, Philadelphia now enters the next round with more momentum than they have had in over a decade.

The Philadelphia 76ers fans want the Boston Celtics to remember how they came from behind and snatched the series out of their hands; they took advantage of a postgame show to send out some loud chants that did not sit well with the analysts.
The Philadelphia 76ers fans took their celebration to another level following their massive victory, showing the world exactly how high emotions are running in this rivalry. A group of rowdy supporters famously crashed the Boston Celtics postgame show, drowning out the broadcast with loud, mocking chants.

SM Highlights on X labeled the fans “legendary trolls” after the analysts on set were visibly irritated by the disruption during their live analysis. The “We want Boston” chants served as the ultimate taunt, especially since the 76ers had just finished eliminating the Celtics to secure their spot in the next round.

The chaotic scene quickly went viral, capturing the intense energy of a Philadelphia fanbase that has been waiting decades for this specific moment of postseason redemption. This bold display of confidence sets a fiery tone for the 76ers as they prepare to move forward and face their next challenge in the Eastern Conference.

Why 76ers fans are celebrating a historic playoff comeback

The 76ers pulled off an improbable 109-100 victory in Game 7 to eliminate the Boston Celtics, sparking a massive celebration among a fanbase that has waited years for this moment. What makes this win special is that Philadelphia trailed 3-1 in the series after the first four games, only to storm back with three consecutive wins to silence the crowd at TD Garden.

76ers fans crashed the Celtics postgame show and started chanting “We want Boston.” The analysts were so pissed.

Legendary trolls 😭😭 pic.twitter.com/WPzmk36zi1
— SM Highlights (@SMHighlights1) May 3, 2026

This victory is particularly sweet as it serves as long-awaited revenge for the 76ers, who suffered a painful first-round sweep against Boston in 2020 and a grueling seven-game loss in the 2023 conference semifinals. By advancing, the Sixers have successfully knocked their rivals out of the postseason for the first time since 1982, snapping a frustrating six-series losing streak against the Celtics.

The excitement is further amplified because the 76ers are making a triumphant return to the playoffs after a miserable 24-58 campaign that saw them miss the 2024-25 NBA postseason entirely. After a decade of being perennial contenders, fans are ecstatic to see the team not only back in the hunt but showing the “warrior mode” necessary to overcome historic deficits.

The Philadelphia 76ers came back from a 1-3 series deficit against the Boston Celtics in the 2026 NBA Playoffs after winning Game 7, and a question arises: Which was the last team to achieve that feat?
The Philadelphia 76ers went against all expectations and defeated the Boston Celtics 109-100 in Game 7 of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at TD Garden, completing a 3-1 comeback to win the series 4-3 and advancing to the conference semifinals after an impressive series.

With the win, the Sixers become the 14th team out of 302 to overcome a 1-3 series deficit, the last to achieve it being the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 Finals against the Golden State Warriors. This means Philadelphia is the first team to do it again in 10 years.

As a side note, with the win, the Sixers advance over Boston in the playoffs for the first time since 1982, snapping a six-series losing streak, confirming that they went against everything that did not favor them and brought out their best, with a warrior-mode Joel Embiid, a cold-blooded Tyrese Maxey, and a team hungry for success.

Embiid and Maxey’s impact in Game 7

Joel Embiid scored 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to propel the 76ers to a 109-100 victory that eliminated the Boston Celtics from the NBA playoffs on Saturday.

Tyrese Maxey scored 10 of his 30 points in a frantic fourth quarter as the seventh-seeded Sixers thwarted the second-seeded Celtics’ comeback bid, completing their own comeback from 3-1 down in the series to book an Eastern Conference semi-final showdown with the New York Knicks.

The series was the 23rd playoff clash between the two teams and Boston had won the last six, knocking Embiid out of the playoffs in 2018, 2020 and 2023. Embiid had said he was tired of losing to the Celtics, and he and Maxey made sure it did not happen again, keying the 76ers’ first-ever victory in a series in which they trailed 3-1.

The key variable in the matchup

It was not a smooth ride, even with Boston missing star Jayson Tatum, who was ruled out less than two hours before tip-off with a sore left knee. Tatum had exited late in the third quarter of Thursday’s Game 6 blowout loss to the Sixers, and he could only watch from the bench as the Celtics season ended.

Tatum, who ruptured his right Achilles tendon in last year’s playoffs, had missed the first 62 games of the regular season but had gone from strength to strength since his NBA season debut in March. Jaylen Brown scored 34 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Celtics and Derrick White added 26 points, but it was not enough to secure the victory.
