JT Realmuto explained why Cristopher Sanchez’s dominant changeup has become a “cheat code” as the Philadelphia Phillies ace continues his remarkable 2026 season.
J.T. Realmuto has had a front-row seat to Cristopher Sanchez’s emergence as one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball, and the Philadelphia Phillies catcher believes one pitch stands above the rest. Although Sanchez’s pursuit of a historic scoreless innings streak ended at 50.1 innings on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, he once again delivered a strong outing in a 3-2 victory.

Following the win, Realmuto highlighted the pitch that has become the foundation of Sanchez’s success. Speaking to 97.5 The Fanatic, Realmuto described the left-hander’s devastating changeup in simple terms. “It feels like a cheat code when you’re catching that you can always go back to that pitch,” Realmuto said.

The praise comes as Sanchez continues to dominate opposing hitters with a pitch that consistently generates swings and misses while also producing weak contact, a bright spot at a time when the Phillies’ offensive slump plummeted them behind New York Mets, adding even more value to his reliability on the mound.

Sanchez’s changeup continues to fuel elite production

Sanchez’s changeup has evolved into one of the most effective pitches in baseball. The offering allows him to attack hitters in any count, keeping opponents off balance while generating ground balls and strikeouts at an elite rate.

Cristopher Sanchez #61 of the Phillies walks from the bullpen with J.T. Realmuto. Emilee Chinn/Getty Images

The left-hander improved to 7-2 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.46 while surpassing 100 strikeouts. Even after his scoreless streak ended, Sanchez continues to build a strong case as one of the league’s premier pitchers in 2026.

Realmuto and Sanchez continue building one of MLB’s top batteries

Realmuto’s impact extends far beyond his offensive production. The veteran catcher has played a key role in guiding Sanchez through his emergence, helping maximize the effectiveness of his pitch mix and game plan.

The Phillies catcher also contributed at the plate against San Diego, finishing 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. His seventh-inning solo shot broke a 1-1 tie and provided crucial support for Sanchez. Together, the pair has developed into one of the most reliable pitcher-catcher combinations in baseball, combining experience, trust, and execution as Philadelphia continues its push in the National League standings.

Despite a recent surge by the Philadelphia Phillies to steady their regular season, they find themselves fighting to stay above water in a top-heavy NL East, sitting just ahead of a struggling New York Mets squad that has spent much of the year floundering near the bottom of the league.
Despite a recent surge by the Philadelphia Phillies to steady their regular season, they find themselves fighting to stay above water in a top-heavy NL East, sitting just ahead of a struggling New York Mets squad that has spent much of the year floundering near the bottom of the league.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark, the Phillies’ offense has been held to one run or fewer in 14 games this season. Only the Mets and the Colorado Rockies have endured more such lackluster outings, with 15 apiece. The glaring lack of punch has amplified concerns in the wake of a brutal 9-1 drubbing at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Furthermore, the Phillies’ offensive efficiency metrics have cratered so dramatically that they have officially plummeted below the lowly Mets in team batting average with runners in scoring position (RISP).

Alongside Cristopher Sanchez reacting after making franchise history with a scoreless streak, dropping below a division rival in such a critical situational category is a massive wake-up call. It highlights a glaring inability to execute when the lights are brightest, transforming what should be routine, rally-extending plate appearances into a parade of frustrating strikeouts and soft contact.

J.T. Realmuto #10 of the Phillies in action during a game.

Underperforming superstars in the Phillies

The core of the issue lies squarely on the shoulders of Philadelphia’s marquee bats, who have collectively vanished during high-leverage moments. Franchise cornerstone Bryce Harper has fallen into a deep power outage, struggling to drive the ball with authority, while Trea Turner’s uncharacteristic swing-and-miss tendencies at the top of the order have severely handcuffed the team’s ability to manufacture early runs.

Manager Don Mattingly has maintained a hopeful demeanor publicly, but behind closed doors, the coaching staff is searching for answers. Adjustments to the batting order and approach at the plate have yielded few results.

Looming division pressure

Time is still on Philadelphia’s side with a 30-29 record and more than 100 games to be played, but the margin for error is shrinking rapidly in a division that routinely punishes extended slumps. If the Phillies cannot correct their situational approach and rediscover their offensive identity, their tenuous safety cushion above the Mets (26-33) in the standings will mean very little when the wild-card race intensifies.

The upcoming stretch of the schedule offers no breathers, meaning the bats must wake up immediately. It is up to the leadership in the clubhouse to spark a turnaround before a temporary offensive slide permanently alters the trajectory of their season.

Padres pitcher Walker Buehler addressed San Diego’s recent struggles after the team was swept by the Philadelphia Phillies amid ongoing offensive inconsistency.
The San Diego Padres have quickly lost momentum in the NL West after being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies, and pitcher Walker Buehler did not shy away from addressing the team’s recent inconsistency.

“We’re a big momentum-based team, and playing against the Padres for as long as I have, that’s part of the DNA here,” Buehler said, according to CBS 8 San Diego, while discussing the club’s recent stretch. “We catch momentum, have a good road trip, and hopefully do the same thing to them at their place.”

The Padres entered the week viewed as one of the biggest threats to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings, but the recent losing streak dropped them to third place in the division. Offensive inconsistency has continued to be a major issue throughout the season, especially during the sweep against Philadelphia.

Padres offense continues to search for consistency

Despite remaining competitive in the standings, San Diego’s offense has struggled to produce consistently. The Padres currently rank in the bottom half of MLB in both runs scored and slugging percentage, making it difficult for the team to capitalize on strong pitching performances.

Walker Buehler #10 of the Padres pitches during a game against the Cubs. Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

Manager Craig Stammen recently defended hitting coach Steven Sousa Jr. while taking responsibility for the offensive issues himself. San Diego has struggled to sustain rallies during the recent skid, and several key hitters have yet to find prolonged rhythm at the plate.

Petco Park homestand could shift momentum for Padres

The Padres now head into an important homestand at Petco Park hoping to regain confidence before the division race begins to tighten further. Buehler’s comments reflected the belief inside the clubhouse that momentum still plays a major role in how the team performs over long stretches of the season.

With stars like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado leading the lineup, San Diego still possesses enough talent to rebound quickly. However, the offense will need to improve if the Padres want to keep pace with the Dodgers and remain firmly in the playoff picture.

Philadelphia Phillies star Cristopher Sanchez reacted after setting a franchise record with 44 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in win against the San Diego Padres.
Cristopher Sanchez continued his dominant stretch for the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, delivering seven more scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres while making franchise history in the process, as Nick Castellanos recently spoke out on the Phillies’ shift to Don Mattingly during a tough week for the club.

“It was incredible,” Sanchez said after the game, according to MLB.com. “It’s really special what we have here as a group, as an organization as a whole — the players, the staff, the medical staff. So it’s just really special to share things like this with this tremendous group that we have here.”

The left-hander extended his scoreless streak to 44 2/3 consecutive innings, surpassing Hall of Famer Grover Alexander for the longest scoreless streak by a Phillies pitcher since 1893.

The historic outing did not come without tense moments. Sanchez escaped multiple deep fly balls at Petco Park, including long drives from Gavin Sheets and Manny Machado that narrowly stayed inside the park. The streak officially became a franchise record when he retired Jackson Merrill to end the fourth inning.

Cristopher Sánchez #61 of the Phillies celebrates after pitching the seventh inning against the Padres. Ramirez/Getty Images

Sanchez continues dominant run for Phillies

Sánchez’s scoreless streak dates back to the second inning of his April 30 start against the San Francisco Giants, and he has become one of baseball’s hottest pitchers during that span. The 2026 campaign has featured a dramatic turnaround for both Sanchez and the Phillies, who were struggling early in the season before finding momentum in recent weeks.

His streak now ranks among the longest single-season scoreless stretches in the Live Ball Era. Sanchez entered elite territory alongside legendary names such as Orel Hershiser, Don Drysdale, and Bob Gibson, while also producing one of the most dominant months by a starting pitcher in MLB history.

During May, Sanchez delivered one of the most dominant stretches of his career, throwing 39 innings with 45 strikeouts, just three walks, and no earned runs allowed. The Phillies starter combined elite command with swing‑and‑miss stuff, giving the club a steady, ace‑level presence in the rotation throughout the month.

Phillies rotation gaining momentum behind Sanchez

The Phillies continue to benefit from strong pitching performances across the roster, but Sanchez has become the centerpiece of the team’s recent surge. His latest outing helped Philadelphia secure another key victory while continuing to build confidence heading into the summer months.

Although Sanchez still trails Orel Hershiser’s all-time MLB record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings, the left-hander has already cemented his place in Phillies history. His next scheduled outing could move him even higher on the all-time leaderboard if the streak continues.

Nick Castellanos is making it clear he is fully committed to producing for the San Diego Padres, while also opening up about his perspective on his former club, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the impact of Don Mattingly joining their coaching staff.
Heading into the regular season, Philadelphia Phillies fans expected Nick Castellanos to be a fixture in the middle of their lineup. Instead, a series of philosophical differences with former manager Rob Thomson ultimately led to Castellanos’ unceremonious departure, an organizational rift the San Diego Padres pounced on by scooping up the veteran outfielder for the current campaign.

Now, as he prepares to face his former club, Castellanos offered a telling perspective on the Phillies’ new-look dugout. “My thought was ‘right man, right spot,’” Castellanos told NBC Sports Philadelphia regarding the hiring of Don Mattingly. “The fact that a father is able to work underneath his son is a beautiful thing. I think that baseball is a personal, family, authentic game.”

Castellanos’ pointed remarks serve as a tacit confirmation that his deteriorating relationship with Thomson paved his exit from Philadelphia. The friction reportedly began to boil over late last season, right as the Phillies were gearing up for a deep postseason run.

While losing a high-profile bat is never ideal, the Phillies’ outfield depth has filled the void beautifully, with offseason acquisition Adolis Garcia stepping up in Castellanos’ absence. Still, there is plenty of baseball left to be played, and a retooling Philadelphia squad is currently treading water with a mediocre 27-27 record.

Nick Castellanos #8 of the Philadelphia Phillies looks on.

Castellanos’ thoughts on Thomson’s lack of communication

Reflecting on his departure, Castellanos opened up to reporters on Monday, indicating that a fundamental breakdown in communication between player and manager was at the root of the split.

“I think you can fill in the blanks on that,” Castellanos said when pressed to compare the clear expectations laid out by San Diego’s front office with the communication issues he endured during his final stretch in Philadelphia.

Castellanos’ stats with the Padres

While the Phillies scratch and claw to climb back above .500, the Padres are integrating a motivated piece into their clubhouse. Though his role has shifted to a part-time capacity, San Diego remains confident that giving the veteran a fresh canvas will validate their decision to take a flyer on him this season.

Let’s review Castellanos’ stats so far:

At Bats (AB): 109

Batting Average (AVG): .183

On-Base Percentage (OBP): .217

Slugging Percentage (SLG): .339

On-Base Plus Slugging (OPS): .556

Hits (H): 20

Home Runs (HR): 4

Runs Batted In (RBI): 19

Runs Scored (R): 9

Stolen Bases (SB): 1

Wins Above Replacement (WAR): -0.9

While Jesus Luzardo has anchored himself as a frontline stud in the Philadelphia Phillies' starting rotation, his brilliant individual performance is merely masking the glaring roster deficiencies.
The Philadelphia Phillies finally climbed back to the .500 mark at 27-27 following a crucial victory over the San Diego Padres in Monday’s series opener. The headline of the night was left-hander Jesus Luzardo, who stole the show with a dominant performance on the mound.

The southpaw anchored the Phillies’ victory by tossing six scoreless innings against a potent Padres lineup. However, the win couldn’t entirely mask Philadelphia’s ongoing offensive funk, as the core of the order—Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, and Adolis Garcia—went a combined 0-for-14 on the night.

The only real spark came from Kyle Schwarber, who put together a strong 2-for-3 showing, and Brandon Marsh, who launched a solo home run to help power the offense.

While Garcia has stepped up admirably to help mitigate the absence of the injured Nick Castellanos, the Phillies desperately need the rest of the lineup to break out of this collective slump if they plan to take care of business over the remainder of the series against San Diego.

Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler & Jesus Luzardo’s combined stats in May:

92.0 IP | 66 H | 14 ER | 16 BB | 97 K
1.37 ERA | 0.89 WHIPpic.twitter.com/Ryj2NpRl6u
— Phillies Tailgate (@PhilsTailgate) May 26, 2026

Luzardo shows two sides of the coin this season

Luzardo’s brilliant outing highlighted a bizarre statistical split for the lefty this year. While he has been absolutely virtually unhittable on the road—boasting a pristine 3-0 record and a microscopic 1.28 ERA away from Philadelphia—home cooking has been a different story, as evidenced by his dismal 1-4 record and a ballooned 7.31 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.

Because of those drastic splits, manager Don Mattingly will need to find ways to steady his starter during home assignments to ensure the Phillies can string together wins and push their record well above the .500 threshold.

Phillies’ pitchers are recording outstanding stats

Despite Luzardo’s localized struggles at home, the Phillies’ starting rotation as a whole has been pitching lights-out baseball. Over the last two-plus weeks, Philadelphia starters have pitched to a spectacular 1.84 ERA, the best mark in Major League Baseball over that stretch.

The pitching staff is doing its part; now, the onus falls on the bats. If superstars like Harper and Bohm can rediscover their rhythm at the plate to back this elite pitching, the Phillies have a legitimate chance to transform into an absolute powerhouse and firmly secure their postseason destiny.

While Nick Castellanos anchors the lineup for the San Diego Padres, Adolis Garcia has stepped in to fill the void for the Philadelphia Phillies this regular season, an unusual arrangement with the Phillies front office footing the bill for both players.
The Philadelphia Phillies and Nick Castellanos officially parted ways ahead of this regular season, though the organization is still eating a significant portion of his salary while he suits up for the San Diego Padres. To fill the vacancy in the outfield, the Phillies pivotally signed Adolis Garcia to a one-year, $10 million contract, a high-stakes gamble that has already begun to pay dividends.

When analyzing the financial landscape of both players, the discrepancy in production versus cost becomes glaring. While Castellanos is hauling in a $19 million salary, Garcia is playing on a much more efficient $10 million deal, all while outperforming his predecessor across virtually every major statistical metric this season.

The numbers paint a stark contrast: Castellanos has sputtered to a dismal .190 batting average with just four home runs, 19 RBIs, a sub-par .578 OPS, and a costly -0.8 WAR. Meanwhile, Garcia has provided a steady presence, batting .203 with four homers, 15 RBIs, a .607 OPS, and a far more manageable -0.3 WAR.

While neither player is putting up MVP-caliber numbers this year, the comparative data highlights the financial efficiency the Phillies secured by shifting resources to Garcia. The outfield stability has allowed manager Don Mattingly to keep his focus elsewhere, shutting down any rumors of a potential lineup shakeup involving superstar shortstop Trea Turner.

Adolis García #53 of the Philadelphia Phillies at bat.

Inside Castellanos’ extended struggles

The prolonged slump that has plagued Castellanos can be traced back to a severely disrupted spring training schedule. Arriving late to Padres camp left him with minimal time to adjust to a new hitting philosophy, and the lingering emotional fallout from his unceremonious exit from Philadelphia has clearly impacted his comfort level at the plate.

He has already racked up a significant number of strikeouts in just over 100 at-bats. His average exit velocity has dropped to 88.0 mph, which is well below the league average and a step down from his prime years and Castellanos is registering a 37.8% Hard-Hit Rate (balls hit 95+ mph).

Are the Phillies actually missing Castellanos?

Following a highly publicized falling out with the previous coaching staff, Castellanos’ relationship with the Phillies’ front office rapidly deteriorated. While his tense departure left an undeniable void in the clubhouse, the front office has shown zero seller’s remorse as they comfortably move forward with their revamped roster.

It seems Trea Turner will not be moved in the lineup despite his poor performance at home plate; Don Mattingly announced the decision even though everyone is aware of the bad stats the player is currently having.
Don Mattingly is standing firm on his lineup construction, making it clear that Trea Turner will remain the Philadelphia Phillies‘ leadoff hitter for the foreseeable future. Despite mounting pressure to spark a stagnant offense, the interim manager emphasized that he has no immediate plans to demote his star shortstop.

These comments from Mattingly came following a frustrating 1-0 shutout loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Friday, May 22, 2026, where the Phillies’ bats failed to provide any support for a dominant starting pitching performance. “I’m definitely not there,” Mattingly reiterated to reporters when asked if Turner’s recent cold spell would result in a drop in the batting order.

Statistically, Turner has struggled to find his rhythm this MLB season, currently sporting a .234 batting average following the series opener against Cleveland. While his speed and contact ability are supposed to be the engine of the Phillies’ offense, the lack of production at the top has become a glaring issue.

Turner is struggling

The debate over the leadoff spot has intensified because Bryce Harper is consistently finding himself in sub-optimal situations while Turner receives more opportunities to influence the game. For instance, Turner has batted nine more times than Harper this season despite playing in fewer games, and Harper has been forced to hit with two outs and nobody on base 25 more times than his leadoff teammate.

Trea Turner scoring from first on a passed ball is bananas
pic.twitter.com/myOxGerIy3
— Baseball Central™ (@BaseballCentraI) May 21, 2026

Furthermore, the data suggests that Harper’s elite bat is being wasted in the three-hole, as Turner has actually batted with runners in scoring position (RISP) four more times than the former MVP. Turner has also found himself at the plate as the potential final out in a loss twice as often as Harper, a trend that has persisted for the Phillies since the implementation of the Universal DH.

Many analysts argue that the current situation is not just a brief slump for Turner, but a systemic flaw that requires Bryce Harper to take over the leadoff spot immediately. Given that Turner has batted in the 9th inning or later while trailing five more times than Harper, the Phillies may need to rethink their strategy to ensure their best hitter is getting the most impactful plate appearances possible.

Don Mattingly explained why the Phillies are giving J.T. Realmuto more rest days as Philadelphia manages the veteran catcher’s workload.
The Philadelphia Phillies continue trying to carefully manage veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto as the team pushes through a competitive stretch of the season. Before Tuesday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, interim manager Don Mattingly addressed why Philadelphia has recently started giving Realmuto additional rest days behind the plate.

Mattingly, who recently addressed the Phillies’ surge, explained that the decision is focused on protecting the veteran catcher over the course of a long season rather than reducing his role within the lineup. “He wants to play, and he wants to be in there every day, and we appreciate that,” Mattingly said, via reporter Shaun Nestor on X. “But, again, I think sometimes you have to save guys from themselves and try to give them days here and there.”

Philadelphia later fell 4-1 to the Reds, dropping the club to 25-24 on the season. The Phillies have shown improvement under Mattingly recently, but the team is still searching for more offensive consistency, including from Realmuto, who is batting .220 with one home run, eight RBIs, and a .585 OPS across 100 at-bats this year.

Phillies using three-catcher setup to help Realmuto

According to Nestor, Mattingly has been taking advantage of carrying three catchers on the roster to reduce Realmuto’s workload while still keeping him involved with specific pitchers.

Cristopher Sanchez of the Phillies celebrates with teammate J.T. Realmuto. Justin Berl/Getty Images

The strategy allows Philadelphia to balance rest with continuity behind the plate, especially for one of the club’s most experienced leaders. Realmuto has long been known for his durability and desire to play nearly every day, but the Phillies appear focused on keeping him healthy deeper into the season.

Phillies hoping rested Realmuto can help offense improve

Philadelphia’s offense has struggled to consistently produce during parts of the 2026 season, making Realmuto’s production even more important moving forward.

While his numbers remain below his usual standards, the Phillies believe additional rest could help the veteran catcher stay fresh both offensively and defensively.

The Phillies will now look to bounce back against Cincinnati as they continue trying to climb further above .500 and maintain momentum in the National League playoff race.

Don Mattingly explained the Phillies’ recent turnaround after Philadelphia improved to 16-4 under the interim manager.
The Philadelphia Phillies continue moving back into the National League playoff picture, and interim manager Don Mattingly believes the reason behind the team’s recent success is actually pretty simple. Since replacing Rob Thomson on April 28, Mattingly has helped guide Philadelphia through one of its best stretches of the season.

Following the sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Mattingly was asked about the club’s dramatic turnaround and gave a straightforward response, according to SportsRadio 94WIP. “In general, we’re playing better.”

Philadelphia opened the season with a disappointing 9-19 record, but the team has completely changed momentum over the last few weeks. Since Mattingly took over as interim manager, the Phillies have gone 16-4 while improving in nearly every area on the field.

Phillies showing major improvement under Don Mattingly

The Phillies’ recent success has been built on more consistent pitching, cleaner defense, and stronger offensive production. Philadelphia has posted a 2.91 ERA since the managerial change while also receiving more reliable bullpen performances late in games, a stretch that has highlighted Mattingly’s impact and comes shortly after he addressed Red Sox tactics following a recent Phillies victory.

Alec Bohm #28 of the Phillies celebrates with teammates in the dugout. Justin Berl/Getty Images

Mattingly later expanded on his comments by highlighting the team’s better overall execution. The Phillies have committed fewer defensive mistakes recently, while stars like Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber continue producing offensively during the hot stretch.

Phillies quickly changing outlook of their season

Just a few weeks ago, the Phillies looked like a team falling out of contention in the National League. Now, after winning five consecutive series, the conversation around the organization has changed significantly.

While Mattingly downplayed the turnaround with his simple explanation, the Phillies are clearly playing with more confidence and consistency than they showed during the opening month of the season.

Manager Don Mattingly reacted to the Boston Red Sox’s signaling tactics after the Philadelphia Phillies secured a key win at Fenway Park.
Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly addressed unusual in-game tactics from the Boston Red Sox following Thursday night’s 3-1 victory at Fenway Park, where Philadelphia secured its fourth win in five games, during a stretch when Ranger Suarez reacted after facing Phillies for first time since joining Red Sox.

After the game, Mattingly discussed moments in which Red Sox players appeared to be signaling hitters from second base, though he made it clear the Phillies never allowed the situation to become a distraction. “We obviously saw it and been around enough to know that some of it’s real, some of it’s just to make you think they know something,” Mattingly told reporters, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Phillies remained composed throughout the game and relied on strong pitching performances from Jesus Luzardo and Jhoan Duran while Kyle Schwarber delivered the decisive home run late in the contest.

Don Mattingly explains Phillies’ reaction during game

Mattingly said the Phillies coaching staff monitored Boston’s movements closely but ultimately believed many of the signals were either misleading or inconsistent.

Don Mattingly and Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies celebrate during the eighth inning. Paul Rutherford/Getty Images

“We’ve seen a lot of the same motions on different pitches, so it tells you they didn’t really feel like they had anything,” Mattingly explained. “You just want to let your pitchers know really that at that point you don’t think they have anything, because guys do get bothered if they think they got it.”

Phillies continue strong pitching stretch against Boston

While the conversation after the game focused partly on Boston’s tactics, Philadelphia’s pitching staff once again played the biggest role in the result. Luzardo threw six scoreless innings to help contain a struggling Red Sox offense before Duran closed out the game with three strikeouts in the ninth inning. Kyle Schwarber later broke a scoreless tie with a 417-foot two-run homer in the eighth.
