A Dutch court passed sentencing on Wednesday, but Promes did not go to the court hearings and is not planning on facing the music. Promes is residing outside of the Netherlands.

Lawyers representing Promes told the media that they would appeal his sentence, Promes denies any involvement in the charges he was sentenced for. The charges consist of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing drugs.

How was Quincy Promes caught?

According to the court, Promes was involved directly in the shipment of the narcotics, which were hidden in shipments that came from Brazil. This was discovered by phone taps, which led to Promes being charged.

Since Promes is out of the country the former Sevilla player has two pending sentences, the six-year sentence for drug trafficking and a 2020 year and a half sentence for assault.

The assault charge is due to a fight he had with a cousin which resulted in Promes stabbing his cousin in the knee. Both sentences are currently under appeal.

Promes was sentenced to 18- months in jail, the midfielder never showed up during the whole court proceedings. Promes remains in Russia where he plays with Spartak Moscow.

The court in the Netherlands determined that Promes did assault his cousin but there was no intent to murder him and for that the judge issued an 18-month sentence.

Quincy Promes guilty of stabbing his cousin

The judge is said to have been very unhappy that Promes never showed up to his court during the trial and that because of that he received the full 18-month sentence rather than the reduced sentence of twelve months.

Promes was also ordered to pay €7,000 in compensation to his cousin for the stabbing. Given that there are no extradition laws between the Netherlands and Russia it is unclear if Promes will return to the country to comply with his sentence. The Netherlands can request extradition if Promes appeal fails.

Promes also has hovering a pending trial for smuggling 1,360 kilograms of narcotics to the Netherlands or Belgium in two shipments in 2020. Promes was indicted due to a wiretap from another investigation pertaining to drug smuggling.

The Prosecution believes Promes and a co-defendant imported the drug in two batches via the Port of Antwerp in January 2020. The co-defendant was arrested on April 25 on suspicion of drug trafficking and money laundering.

Promes will not be at the pretrial since he is committed to his club Spartak Moscow, but reports indicate that the former Ajax man is afraid of being arrested upon arrival to the Netherlands.

Promes is also facing a charge of aggravated assault after stabbing his cousin at a family event in July of 2020. Dutch prosecutors stated in a statement, “The public prosecution service has demanded two years against a man who is suspected of stabbing his cousin in the knee.”

As the investigation began it became public knowledge that Promes phone was tapped, and through the wire tape the police discovered he had assaulted his cousin and seek two-years imprisonment for that crime. The case involving the assault is set for June of this year, while no word has been issued as to when the trail over the cocaine trafficking will begin.
