Giants’ Tony Vitello takes responsibility after bullpen collapse vs Diamondbacks

https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/giants-tony-vitello-takes-responsibility-after-bullpen-collapse-vs-diamondbacks

Manager Tony Vitello took responsibility after the San Francisco Giants’ bullpen collapsed in a heartbreaking walk-off loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Francisco Giants were just one out away from escaping another difficult inning Tuesday night before everything unraveled in a painful 5-3 walk-off loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. After the game, manager Tony Vitello openly accepted responsibility for the bullpen decision that ultimately changed the outcome.

With two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, Vitello removed right-hander Caleb Kilian and turned to left-hander Matt Gage to face Ketel Marte. Two pitches later, Marte launched a game-winning three-run homer into left field to hand San Francisco another frustrating defeat. “Went with a fresh arm, different look, and made the wrong decision, cost us the game,” Vitello told reporters afterward. “Obviously, it’s on me.”

The loss dropped the Giants to 20-29 on the season and overshadowed several strong individual performances earlier in the game. San Francisco’s bullpen had repeatedly escaped trouble before the ninth‑inning collapse, but the club also struggled offensively, finishing 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Despite the challenging campaign and outside noise, the Giants reportedly not consider a Rafael Devers trade.

Vitello explains late bullpen decision

Vitello’s decision came after Kilian had already thrown 25 pitches while working through multiple high-pressure situations. Marte’s switch-hitting ability also created a difficult matchup decision late in the game.

Starting pitcher Landen Roupp of the Giants reacts after being removed. Christian Petersen/Getty Images

The Giants manager explained that he wanted to give Arizona a different look by bringing in Gage, who had performed well for San Francisco throughout the season. However, the move quickly backfired once Marte connected for the decisive home run.

Before the ninth inning, the Giants had managed to survive several dangerous moments. Kilian escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, while Keaton Winn also worked through pressure situations earlier in the game with help from solid defensive plays behind him.

Rafael Devers, Landen Roupp provide positives despite loss

Even with the tough ending, San Francisco still saw encouraging performances from several key players. Rafael Devers delivered one of his strongest all-around games of the season, homering in the second inning shortly after Willy Adames also went deep.

Starting pitcher Landen Roupp added six solid innings while allowing only one run on seven hits and collecting three strikeouts in his first quality start since late April.

Still, the Giants could not capitalize offensively when opportunities appeared, and one late mistake from the bullpen erased much of the positive work done earlier in the night. San Francisco will now try to regroup quickly as the pressure continues building during a difficult stretch of the season.

The San Francisco Giants reportedly are not discussing trades involving Rafael Devers or other star players despite the team’s difficult season.
The San Francisco Giants continue facing questions about their direction ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but recent reports suggest the organization is not currently considering moving star players such as Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, or Matt Chapman, despite concerns raised in April about Devers’ long‑term fit at first base after manager Tony Vitello indicated that he might not be an immediate option there.

During an appearance on Foul Territory, MLB insider Robert Murray reported that San Francisco has not internally discussed trading its core players despite the team’s disappointing campaign. “Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, the Giants have not internally discussed trading any of those players,” Murray said.

He also added, “They want to continue to build around them. They want to continue to try to compete this season.” The report comes as the Giants continue searching for consistency offensively while trying to remain competitive in a difficult National League race.

Devers continues battling difficult stretch

Devers entered the season expected to be one of the focal points of San Francisco’s lineup, but the star infielder has struggled to find sustained offensive rhythm.

Rafael Devers #16 of the Giants is congratulated by Willy Adames. Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Through 43 games, Devers is batting .247 with a .295 on-base percentage and a .395 slugging percentage, numbers that fall below the production typically associated with one of baseball’s premier hitters.

Giants remain focused on competing despite trade speculation

Trade speculation surrounding San Francisco has intensified because of the team’s uneven performance and uncertainty surrounding its postseason outlook. However, the latest reporting indicates the organization is still prioritizing competitiveness over a potential roster reset.

Keeping players such as Devers, Adames, and Chapman would signal continued confidence in the current core despite the difficult start to the season. With several months remaining before the deadline, the Giants still have time to improve their standing and potentially shift the conversation away from trade rumors entirely.

The Cleveland Guardians acquired Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants as the club continues shaping its roster ahead of future plans.
The Cleveland Guardians, San Francisco Giants, and catcher Patrick Bailey were at the center of a rare MLB roster move on Saturday, as Cleveland acquired the two-time Gold Glove winner in exchange for the No. 29 pick in the 2026 Draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson.

“BREAKING: The Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year’s draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt ‘Tugboat’ Wilkinson,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on X.

The move highlights Cleveland’s continued focus on defensive strength behind the plate, even as Bailey’s offensive numbers remain limited this season. The 26-year-old is hitting .146 with one home run and five RBIs, but remains one of the most respected defensive catchers in baseball, ranking in the 99th percentile in Fielding Run Value. Over his MLB career, Bailey owns a .224 average with 22 home runs and a .611 OPS across three-plus seasons.

Guardians prioritize elite defense in move for Bailey

Bailey’s reputation as an elite defensive catcher appears to be the driving force behind Cleveland’s decision. Despite offensive inconsistencies, Cleveland has shown a clear willingness to prioritize defense up the middle, especially at premium positions like catcher. Bailey immediately strengthens that identity, providing stability and run prevention value that goes beyond traditional batting statistics.

BREAKING: The Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for the No. 29 pick in this year's draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, sources tell ESPN.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) May 9, 2026

Giants add draft capital and pitching depth in return package

San Francisco, meanwhile, receives significant future value in return, highlighted by the 29th overall pick in the 2026 Draft, along with pitching prospect Wilkinson. The pick is a competitive-balance selection, which made it eligible to be traded under MLB rules.

Wilkinson, 23, has shown strong early-season form in Double-A Akron, posting a 1.59 ERA across six appearances with 36 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings and a 0.918 WHIP. Originally selected by Cleveland in the 10th round of the 2023 Draft, he now becomes part of San Francisco’s pitching development pipeline.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Giants also gain additional draft pool flexibility, increasing their total bonus pool value to $17.35 million, the fourth highest in this year’s draft class.

The trade reflects contrasting organizational timelines, with Cleveland prioritizing immediate defensive upgrades and San Francisco strengthening long-term assets through draft capital and pitching depth

Alec Bohm explained his mindset after delivering a clutch walk-off sacrifice fly against the San Francisco Giants, helping the Philadelphia Phillies secure a key win amid an uneven start to the season.
The Philadelphia Phillies found a much-needed spark on Thursday, completing a doubleheader sweep over the San Francisco Giants in dramatic fashion. In the second game, it was Alec Bohm who delivered the decisive moment, lifting a walk-off sacrifice fly to secure a 6-5 win and cap off a rare two-win day for Philadelphia.

After the game, Bohm explained his mindset in the bottom of the 10th inning, emphasizing a simple approach in a high-pressure situation. “I didn’t know if they were going to walk me or not, try to set something up. “But I mean, it’s infield in… Just get a pitch you can put in the air, you know, put the bat on it. I got a slider over the plate and was able to stay through it and get it deep enough for Adolis (Garcia) to get in there,” Bohm told MLB.com.

Phillies received an update on Jhoan Duran’s recovery earlier in the day, and the win marked an important moment for a team still trying to stabilize its early‑season performance. Despite Bohm’s heroics, his individual numbers entering the game reflected a difficult start, as he has struggled to find consistency at the plate through the first month of the season.

Bohm’s clutch moment provides rare bright spot in uneven season

Bohm’s walk-off sacrifice fly stood out not only for its timing, but also for its importance in a game that could have gone either way late. With the bases loaded and the infield playing in, Philadelphia trusted its third baseman to deliver a productive at-bat—and he did exactly that.

ALEC SAID LET'S GO BOHM! pic.twitter.com/giEbv7YHc9
— Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) May 1, 2026

Although Bohm entered the game hitting just .151 on the season, the moment provided a reminder of his ability to contribute in key situations. For a Phillies offense that has been inconsistent, situational hitting like this remains critical to turning close games into wins.

Phillies look to build momentum after doubleheader sweep

The sweep improved Philadelphia’s standing to a 12-19 record, keeping them in fourth place in the National League East but offering a potential turning point in a challenging stretch. While the season has been uneven, back-to-back walk-off wins provided a much-needed confidence boost for the clubhouse.

The Phillies will now try to carry that momentum into their upcoming four-game series against the Miami Marlins, beginning Friday night. With the division race still in its early stages, Philadelphia will look to build on Thursday’s success and begin climbing back toward contention.

Luis Arraez reacted to Dalton Rushing’s controversial slide during a heated San Francisco Giants–Los Angeles Dodgers game, calling it “dirty” in a tense NL West matchup.
San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez was at the center of postgame conversation after a controversial slide by Dalton Rushing during a tense matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers sparked debate and frustration across both dugouts. The incident added another emotional chapter to an already intense NL West rivalry.

According to SF Giants on NBCS, Arraez did not hold back when addressing the play. “The umpire said it’s a double play because he slid into Willy’s feet. For me, that’s not good. It’s not good baseball. It’s not clean baseball,” he said. He later added, “I mean, it’s dirty. For me, this is baseball for me.”

The play stemmed from a hard slide at second base that resulted in contact and an umpire ruling of a double play. While the call stood, reactions from players on both sides showed how quickly emotions escalated in a high‑pressure divisional game, and just as this play proved controversial, Logan Webb’s blunt admission after Giants’ struggles earlier this week added another layer to the conversation around San Francisco.

Giants-Dodgers rivalry adds another heated moment

The incident once again highlighted the physical and emotional edge that defines Giants-Dodgers games. Every baserunning decision and defensive play is magnified, especially in tight contests where momentum can shift instantly.

"It's not good baseball."

Luis Arraez believes Dalton Rushing's takeout slide in the sixth was a dirty play pic.twitter.com/Dpl7fXXo5R
— SF Giants on NBCS (@NBCSGiants) April 23, 2026

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb admitted he is struggling early in 2026, saying he feels he is “hurting the team” amid uneven performances.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb delivered an honest assessment of his early 2026 form, acknowledging that his performance has not met expectations and has had an impact on the team. The right-hander, expected to lead the rotation, has battled inconsistency through his first five starts of the season.

“At this point, I’m just kind of hurting the team, to be honest,” Webb said after the game, according to a postgame interview. “Lucky we scored 10. I think we scored 10, right? Yeah, I’m just trying to figure it out.”

After Webb recently told Giants fans to ‘take a deep breath,’ the new comments came after a mixed performance against the Washington Nationals, where he pitched six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six. Despite the Giants’ 10–5 win, his season ERA sits at 5.40, reflecting ongoing struggles to find rhythm and consistency on the mound.

Inconsistency continues to define Webb’s starts

Webb’s 2026 campaign has swung between strong and difficult performances. He endured a tough outing against the New York Yankees, allowing seven runs over five innings, but also delivered a sharp seven-inning start against the New York Mets, giving up just one run.

"I feel like at this point I'm just kind of hurting the team, to be honest."

Logan Webb keeps it real on his latest outing.

(Via: @NBCSGiants) pic.twitter.com/S7X6WrJuGb
— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) April 18, 2026

That inconsistency has made it difficult for the Giants to rely on steady production from their ace. While there are flashes of his usual command, the overall execution has not yet matched his established standard as a frontline starter.

Giants look for answers as pressure builds early

San Francisco’s 8-12 record has increased the importance of rotation stability, especially from Webb. The offense has shown it can support high-scoring games, but the pitching staff has yet to consistently hold leads or limit damage.

For the Giants, Webb’s turnaround is closely tied to their broader outlook. If he returns to form, the rotation immediately becomes more reliable. If struggles continue, the team may face an uphill battle in the early standings.

Luis Arraez is proving some analytics critics wrong, delivering a strong start through his first 13 games with the San Francisco Giants in the 2026 season and showing consistency at the plate.
Luis Arraez is turning heads with his first 13 games for the San Francisco Giants, posting a .320 batting average that leads his teammates. So far, he has collected 16 hits in 50 at-bats and driven in six runs, ranking second on the team in RBIs.

Kylen Mills highlighted Arraez’s strong numbers on X, noting that he also ranks as the fourth-hardest hitter to strike out early this season, with just four strikeouts. That puts him well outside the top 10 in that category, currently led by Matt Wallner of the Minnesota Twins.

Mills added: “8th in MLB in outs above average, which tracks the number of defensive plays made and difficulty,” pointing to Arraez’s impact beyond offense and highlighting his solid work in the infield.

Arraez showing up across multiple leaderboards

The Giants have plenty of reasons to be pleased with Arraez’s production at the plate. He currently appears in seven top-10 statistical leaderboards, including hits, where he’s tied for ninth with several players, among them Brandon Nimmo.

Luis, the hug should come AFTER the Gatorade bath 😂 pic.twitter.com/jxwtnqkWCw
— SF Giants on NBCS (@NBCSGiants) April 8, 2026

Arraez has yet to hit a home run this season. After hitting eight last year with the San Diego Padres, power isn’t his primary strength. His value comes from consistently producing hits and creating RBI opportunities, which benefits the Giants lineup.

Over his last four games, Arraez has recorded at least one hit in each, putting together a solid streak while striking out just once in that span. The Giants’ next three series will be key in evaluating how well he continues to produce on the road.

Phillies catcher JT Realmuto avoids a serious injury after a foul ball scare against the San Francisco Giants, giving Philadelphia a key boost as he’s expected to miss minimal time.
The Philadelphia Phillies received encouraging news regarding J.T. Realmuto after the veteran catcher exited Tuesday’s loss against the San Francisco Giants with a foot injury. Given his importance to the lineup, the situation quickly became a major concern for the team.

According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, “Realmuto’s X-rays came back negative after he was hit by a foul ball in the first inning,” offering immediate relief for both the organization and its fan base.

The update suggests that Realmuto will avoid a long-term absence, which is a key development for a Phillies team with postseason aspirations. While he is expected to rest, the early diagnosis points to a best-case scenario after what initially looked like a potentially serious setback.

Phillies avoid major setback behind the plate

Realmuto’s presence remains critical, even as he enters the later stages of his career. The 35-year-old continues to provide stability both offensively and defensively, and his experience behind the plate is a major asset for Philadelphia’s pitching staff, much like the veteran insight Bryce Harper explained on how his swing came together in big win at Oracle Park.

J.T. Realmuto #10 of the Phillies reacts after an error in the eighth inning at Oracle Park. Brandon Vallance/Getty Images

Without him, the Phillies’ offense showed signs of struggle, managing limited production in the same game he exited. His absence, even in the short term, highlights how much the team relies on his leadership and consistency.

Managing workload remains key moving forward

Health has been a concern for Realmuto in recent seasons, especially after knee surgery in 2024 and the heavy workload that comes with his position. While this latest injury appears to be minor, it reinforces the importance of managing his playing time throughout the season.

With solid early-season numbers and continued impact on both sides of the ball, Realmuto remains a key piece for the Phillies. Avoiding a serious injury allows the team to stay focused on its larger goal, remaining competitive in a demanding National League race.

The San Francisco Giants are off to a rough start to the 2026 MLB season, but Logan Webb doesn't want to hit the panic button yet.
Logan Webb was on the mound during another tough home loss for the San Francisco Giants early in the 2026 MLB season, and afterward made it clear he doesn’t want panic setting in. With most of the schedule still ahead, Webb stressed patience.

According to KNBR, Webb said: “There’s 152 games left in the season … I think before anyone hits the panic button you just gotta take a deep breath. We’ve played some good teams, just go out there tomorrow and try to compete.”

In his latest outing, his second loss of the 2026 MLB season, the Giants fell 5-2 despite Webb delivering a strong performance. He held the New York Mets to just one run over seven innings before relievers Keaton Winn and Erik Miller each allowed two runs, sealing the loss.

Tough spot for Giants, but not hopeless

San Francisco enters April 6 with a 3-7 record, sitting at the bottom of the NL West behind the Colorado Rockies, who also have three wins but one fewer loss. It’s a difficult position, even with more than 150 games still to play.

Logan Webb: “There’s 152 games left in the season … I think before anyone hits the panic button you just gotta take a deep breath.
While Webb is right about the long season ahead, slow starts like this are never easy to overcome. The contrast is especially sharp compared to last year, when the Giants opened 8-2 and finished April at 19-12, building early optimism among fans.

That momentum didn’t carry through, however, as San Francisco ultimately finished the 2025 season at 81-81 and missed the postseason, another reminder that both hot and cold starts don’t always define the final outcome.

It will be a long wait for San Francisco Giants fans hoping to see José Butto back on the mound, though he could return at a crucial point in the regular season as the postseason race intensifies.
The San Francisco Giants won’t be pleased to learn that José Butto’s recovery could take more than eight weeks, a tough blow for a bullpen that was expected to take a step forward this year. With a blood clot involved, the situation has to be handled with caution.

The update came from Alex Pavlovic on X (@PavlovicNBCS): “The Giants announced that Jose Butto’s surgery to remove a blood clot went well. He’ll be out 2-4 months.” It may not be the most devastating loss for the bullpen, but given the expectations surrounding him, it’s still a difficult development for fans to absorb.

During spring training, Butto posted a 2.25 ERA over 4.0 innings pitched. Baseball Reference projected him for a 3.63 ERA across 69 innings this MLB season, surpassing the 67 innings he logged in 2025 between the New York Mets and Giants.

Another option for the Giants

While Butto begins a lengthy recovery process, the Giants have already called up Blade Tidwell from Triple-A. He has delivered solid early results in limited action, posting a 0.00 ERA across three innings in a single appearance.

Blade Tidwell's outing vs the Mets pic.twitter.com/3b0xqdgf0q
— SFGiants (@SFGiants) April 3, 2026

Tidwell could provide another arm for the bullpen. He also saw action with the Mets in 2025, his debut season, appearing in four games, including two starts, and finishing with a 9.00 ERA over 15 innings in limited opportunities in New York.

“It was very exciting. Actually, I didn’t know it was a save, so (Giants catcher Daniel) Susac was handing me the ball after the game, and I was like, ‘why are you handing me the ball?’ And he was like, ‘that’s a save.’ And I said we’re up by five, but it was nice,” Tidwell told KNBR after recording his first save as a reliever.

https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/tony-vitello-signals-rafael-devers-may-not-be-immediate-option-at-first-base

Tony Vitello is taking a cautious approach with his roster and recently made it clear that, at the moment, there is a better option than Rafael Devers at first base for the San Francisco Giants.
Tony Vitello is watching the San Francisco Giants gradually recover after a rough start that included three straight losses. And for those wondering whether Rafael Devers will take over at first base, the answer, for now, is no, with Casey Schmitt handling the role effectively.

Vitello addressed whether Devers is healthy enough to play first base: “I think Raffy is closer. I don’t think it’s anything immediate. The one thing we try to do is get other guys caught up to be able to play at that position to lengthen the options we have at this point. Casey Schmitt has shown the best defense more than anything.”

It’s not as if Devers is struggling. Through seven games with the Giants, he’s hitting .259, a solid mark, while Schmitt is slightly ahead at .273. The offensive gap between the two hasn’t been significant so far.

The plan was always to use Devers and Schmitt

According to Vitello, the original plan was to rotate both players at first base to maximize flexibility. However, with Devers still not fully healthy due to earlier hamstring issues, Schmitt has taken advantage of the opportunity.

Rafael Devers clubs his first homer of the season 💪 pic.twitter.com/T9HmYSzcEV
— MLB (@MLB) April 3, 2026

“The lineup all along was gonna be Casey and Raffy in there so it just kind of became a switch out as a couple weeks out Raffy had some hamstring issues. Right now Casey’s capable of doing damage with the bat, and defensively he’s shown he’s the best over there,” Vitello said.

Statistically, Schmitt has kept pace with Devers. He doesn’t have a home run yet, but he’s collected six hits in 22 at-bats with two RBIs, an encouraging start, especially compared to his .173 average through the first seven games last season.
