The Fighting Irish will face Stanford not only as the No. 9 ranked team in the nation but also with an 86% probability (ESPN) of reaching this year’s 12-team College Football Playoff. Therefore, a victory against Stanford would significantly boost those chances.

However, if Notre Dame loses on the road against Stanford, things could get complicated. They would finish with a 10-3 record, which does not favor their playoff aspirations. Furthermore, they would then need to rely heavily on other results to avoid losing their chance to compete for the national title.

The final say rests with the CFP committee

It must be remembered that there is no guaranteed formula for Notre Dame given their current situation. Before the Stanford game, they were heavily dependent on Ohio State defeating Michigan to prevent another Big Ten team from entering the playoff picture, and the Buckeyes delivered.

Vanderbilt recently defeated Tennessee and improved their CFP chances, but they, too, must await the final decision from the committee. Miami is another team with a 10-2 record, and even BYU (11-1) is hoping to somehow be favored by the committee.

“You start thinking about the big picture and an uncertain future, that’s added pressure you don’t need,” Marcus Freeman told The Intelligencer about the CFP and the Stanford game, which the news outlet labeled a must-win scenario for Notre Dame. “This game is the Super Bowl. It can’t be lip service. Your actions have to follow that. If our actions do follow that, I’m confident we’ll be prepared for the opportunity Saturday.”

It wasn’t always pretty, but Miami got the job done over Stanford. Beck and the offense had a very quiet first half, but they hit their stride during the second half, and that was enough to blow Stanford out of the water.

Boasting a 6-1 record in the 2025 college football campaign, the Hurricanes have reason to believe they can give any program a run for their money. After the win at Hard Rock Stadium, true freshman sensation Malachi Toney made that clear with a bold statement.

“That right there was the standard. University of Miami football,” Malachi Toney stated after the win, via ESPN. “We had to bounce back from last week. Coming into the game we knew we had to come in and punch first, and not get punched in the mouth. That’s what Coach [Mario] Cristobal has been stressing all week: play the standard of football, get back on our grind, that’s what we came out and did.”

Confidence

Only a 17-year-old, Toney is already establishing himself as one of the most electric wideouts in college football. The true freshman out of Fort Lauderdale opted to stay home in South Florida and it’s paid off early in his career.

In addition to the speed and elusiveness he brings to the table for Beck’s passing game in Miami, the first-year wide receiver plays with the confidence of an experienced player in the NCAA. Toney made that clear with a bold remark on his punt returns, which shifted momentum onto Miami’s side, setting the Canes up in Stanford’s field.

“All I’ve been telling the guys is give me a hold up in the gunners, and I’ll do the rest. And they did that,” Toney boldly commented during his postgame interview after the 42-7 win.

While it was a big outing to regain confidence, Beck, Toney, and Miami know that beating Stanford at home isn’t a reason to celebrate too much. The real work begins now, as the Hurricanes hit the road for a trip to Dallas. On November 1, Miami will go up against the SMU Mustangs (5–3, 3–1 in league play) in what’s set to be a crucial ACC showdown.

Moreover, it will truly test Beck and the Hurricanes, as the program in Coral Gables will play its first game outside the state of Florida in the 2025 NCAA season. Whether Beck and Miami can thrive beyond the Sunshine State will soon be put to the test.

The former Indianapolis Colts player spoke with cbssports.com and made it clear that, although his team hasn’t had strong performances recently, they are ready to make an impact in the upcoming season and, why not, dream of going far in College Football.

“Football just matters more in this country,” Luck said. “We know perhaps we haven’t been playing enough of the game. And we’re starting to play the game and we’re going to be there.”

Additionally, Luck stated to the press that they will not only be striving for athletic achievements but also maintaining high standards academically: “We’re working diligently to prepare for the post-House era, and we absolutely intend to be competitive while maintaining the academic rigor and standards that are important to the university,” he said.

“I’m not sure it’s [negotiations] part of the job that lent itself most naturally to my personality, to say the least,” Luck also added. “At heart, a part of me is still a player, right? … On principle, I believe in the renumeration of college football players.”

The relevance of the GM role at Stanford, according to Luck’s opinion

Andrew Luck is a man of the house; he knows the program, played in the NCAAF wearing those colors, and now has the opportunity to take on a different role, but he embraces it as a new challenge.

Being the new general manager of the Stanford Cardinal, in Luck’s view, is something different from other programs: “I do think our position of general manager is substantially different than most GMs in the country because of the needs of Stanford now,” Luck told CBS Sports. “We do believe in scholar-athletes, still.”

Additionally, he stated that he gets more involved than usual to avoid placing too much pressure on the current head coach, Troy Taylor. “Part of it is trial by fire,” he said.

“Hopping in in the middle of the transfer portal has been as good as an education as anything. I’m fired up for Troy. Part of what I’m doing is taking a lot off his plate. It’s too much for a head coach to do X amount of unique negotiations with players contracts or agents or representatives.“

Dabo Swinney noted that Stanford is going to compete hard, but emphasized that the Tigers will be ready to match their energy and intensity. During a press conference on September 24, he highlighted the importance of containing Stanford’s quarterback, Ashton Daniels, saying:

“It’s going to be very important for us, obviously, to win up front but to be very disciplined in how we rush this guy. We’ve got to do a great job defending the screen game, and we’ve got to cover them. You can’t let him sit there and hold the ball.”

Swinney stressed the need for discipline and a focused approach, similar to how they executed against Kentucky the previous week. He added, “We’ve got to do a great job, just like we did last week.”

On the offensive side, Swinney praised his own quarterback, noting that he’s playing at a high level and making smart decisions. “Our quarterback is really at a high level from a decision-making standpoint. He’s playing with a lot of confidence, and we just want to continue nurturing that.”

Clemson Tigers defense in 2024

As for the defense, Swinney expressed optimism about its progress. “I think defensively we’re going to continue to get better. That first group is pretty good.” They’re big favorites to win this game at home by more than twenty points.

Heading into the game against Stanford, Clemson’s defense has allowed an average of 29.66 points over their last three games. Their highest points allowed came against NC State, where they gave up 35 but still secured a 59-35 victory.

During the post-game press conference following the NC State win, Swinney spoke about the players’ strong performances before dropping the bombshell regarding junior wide receiver Adam Randall’s injury.

“What you don’t know about Adam Randall is he broke his foot last Monday. He’s got a little stress fracture in his toe, but he really wanted to play this game [against NC State]. We’ve known since last Monday that we’re going to put a screw in his toe, so he’ll be out for at least a couple of ball games,” Swinney revealed.

Swinney added that Randall typically recovers quickly, but they’ll have to wait and see how he progresses over the next few weeks. The head coach is hopeful Randall will be ready to play by Week 7, when Clemson faces Virginia at home.

Adam Randall’s 2024 NCAAF Season

Randall was active for the first three weeks of the season with the Clemson Tigers, scoring his first touchdown of the year during the recent win over NC State. It was also his most productive game in terms of receiving yards, tallying 69 yards on five receptions.

Interestingly, Randall did not score any touchdowns in the previous two seasons (2022 and 2023) with Clemson, despite playing in 25 games under Dabo Swinney’s guidance.

The Clemson Tigers secured a dominant 59-35 victory over NC State in Week 4, marking their first win against an ACC rival in the 2024 NCAAF season. Head coach Dabo Swinney, now sitting at 2-1, looks ahead to another key matchup against Stanford, but confidently stated it won’t be a challenge for his team.

Following the home win, Dabo Swinney praised his players’ performances but made it clear that the Week 5 game against Stanford is “just another conference game” and “not a challenge at all.”

“No, no, not at all. I mean, because it’s a conference game, no challenge at all. Especially when you turn on the tape of their game at Syracuse last night… I’ve been there on a Friday night; that’s a hard place to win. I know what that’s like, and that was a huge win [Stanford 26-24 Syracuse],” Swinney said.

Swinney also mentioned Stanford’s wide receiver and quarterback, acknowledging their strong offensive play. He added that he would review more tape the following day but was excited for the upcoming primetime game at Death Valley.
