The Detroit Red Wings are in a lot of trouble, and trending to miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the team remains mired in a losing slump.
The Detroit Red Wings can’t climb out of the hole they are in. With five games left on the 2025-26 NHL season, it really is sink or swim for the organization in Motor City. Their chances to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs look far from promising, though.

Prior to the 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Wild, which head coach Todd McLellan blamed Patrick Kane for, the Red Wings had a 37.3% chance of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs, according to MoneyPuck. However, the loss on home ice saw those odds cut by more than half. Now, MoneyPuck credits Detroit with a 15% chance of clinching a postseason berth.

For reference, the Columbus Blue Jackets—currently below the Red Wings in virtue of the regulation wins tiebreaker—have better odds of making the playoffs with a 24.2% probability, according to the site previously mentioned. Those odds could change dramatically as the Red Wings and Blue Jackets will face-off on April 7, in a game that could essentially end the other team’s NHL season and playoffs’ dream.

Detroit’s losing streak

The Red Wings have now dropped two in a row after falling to the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild in back-to-back matinees over the weekend. However, the team’s struggles go far beyond their last two outings. Detroit has lost four of its last five games, with all defeats coming in regulation.

Patrick Kane leaves the ice upset at Madison Square Garden

Moreover, the Red Wings are 4-6-0 in their last 10 and have only won consecutive games once since the NHL resumed play after the Olympic break. While most teams caught fire after the hiatus, the Red Wings have struggled tremendously. They are 7-10-2 since Dylan Larkin returned from Italy with a gold medal around his neck.

Red Wings: Playoff race heats up

With the same number of games played and both teams out of contention for an Atlantic Division playoff spot, the Red Wings could essentially be in a battle with the Ottawa Senators for the last wild-card spot. Detroit faces Columbus next, so it could separate from the Blue Jackets, but it will likely need to win out and hope Ottawa drops a couple of games.

The Islanders are one point ahead of the Red Wings, but with one more game played, so Detroit could take the lead over them. In more ways than one, the Wings’ upcoming showdown against the Jackets is a playoff game. A win is paramount for Detroit to stop the bleeding and put the final nail in Columbus’ coffin, as the organization in Discovery City has lost six in a row.

It’s all set to go down to the wire in the East. There are 11 teams still mathematically in contention, and only five spots up for grabs—two of which are exclusive to the Metropolitan Division. Detroit is on shifting ground, and it could see its playoff drought extend to a decade and become the longest active in the NHL. If that happens, heads might roll in the 313.

The New York Rangers handed the Washington Capitals their worst defeat of the 2025-26 NHL season, and the timing couldn't have been any worse for the team in the nation's capital.
The New York Rangers look possessed to end the 2025-26 NHL season. Playing a youngster-filled lineup, Mike Sullivan and company have finally found something that works in The Big Apple. For the Washington Capitals, though, the 8-1 defeat feels like a playoff-elimination loss, and it may as well be that. Their odds to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs took a considerable hit after the defeat at Madison Square Garden.

According to MoneyPuck, the Capitals had a 23% chance of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs before the puck dropped at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” However, the Capitals couldn’t make the most of their opportunity. Instead, they were blown out of the water by the young and hungry squad in New York. As a result, MoneyPuck now gives Washington a 6.3% chance of making the postseason.

Considering their odds entering Easter Sunday, the 8–1 blowout on Broadway reduced the Capitals’ chances by approximately 73%. Put another way, the Capitals have now seen nearly three-quarters of their chances vanish into thin air because of the thrashing at the hands of the Blueshirts.

Worst defeat in a while for Capitals

Losing to a divisional opponent never feels good. Doing so by a seven-goal margin to a team that’s been eliminated from playoff contention for a long time, though, stings much worse. The Washington Capitals hadn’t allowed eight goals in a regular-season outing since the 2005–06 NHL season.

Will Cuylle scored a hat trick in the 8-1 win

The 8–1 defeat in Manhattan brought longtime fans flashbacks to the 7–0 loss to the Rangers in the 2010–11 campaign at Madison Square Garden. If there’s a silver lining—some may call it delusion—it’s that Washington ended up making the playoffs that season as a wild card. Perhaps the Capitals will have the same luck this time around. However, the outlook is far from promising.

Playoff race in the Eastern Conference

The Caps (87 points) are three points out of the last wild-card spot, with one more game played than the Flyers (90 points), Senators (90), Red Wings (88), and Blue Jackets (88). Matt Roy said it best: “We just need four wins in the next four games,” the Capitals’ blueliner said, via NHL.com. It sounds simple and comes out cleanly from the players’ mouths. Like most things, it’s easier said than done.

For a team that lost 7–3 and 8–1 in its last two road games (against non-playoff teams) and is set to play three road games in its final four, it shows just how steep of a climb the Capitals are facing. Aside from a showdown with the Blue Jackets, the Caps won’t face direct opponents in their playoff race.

Capitals don’t control their destiny

Even if Washington wins out, its fate isn’t in its hands. The Capitals could pull off an incredible finish to the season, but it may all be in vain. Perhaps they are destined to swim all the way to the shore, only to perish there.

If that happens, the Capitals may look back at this defeat in New York City. In the concrete jungle where dreams are made, Washington’s playoff dream may have just been crushed to pieces.

Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche were put on notice after a disappointing performance in the 2025-26 NHL season.
The best team in the NHL took on the worst side, as the Colorado Avalanche hosted the Vancouver Canucks. On paper, the Avs should have blown the ‘Nucks out of the water, but hockey is played on ice. Against all odds, the visitors prevailed over Nathan MacKinnon and company, leading to a blunt wake-up call from head coach Jared Bednar.

“There’s no excuse. I think if we’re making excuses for that performance, it’s going to be a short [playoff] run,” Bednar said after the 8-6 loss at home to the Canucks, via NHL.com. “We have to play [with effort] for 60 minutes. But we weren’t even close.”

Bednar’s comments aren’t by chance. After a dominant first half of the 2025–26 NHL season, the Avs are now showing cracks in their foundation. MacKinnon remains red-hot—he scored his 50th goal of the season (121 points) against Vancouver—but the team is struggling in other areas.

Avalanche’s concerning form

Indeed, the Avs have won five of their last seven games, but they are just 5-4-1 over their last 10 outings. Moreover, Colorado is looking fragile at home. At Ball Arena in the Mile High City—where the Avs are expected to have a second wind against visiting opponents—the Avalanche have lost five of their last six home games.

Jared Bednar of the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena.

As things stand, Colorado is on track to finish the campaign as Presidents’ Trophy champions. That would mean the Stanley Cup Playoffs run through Denver—with MacKinnon’s side enjoying home-ice advantage in every round. Yet if the Avs continue to be a liability on home ice, that advantage could become a burden.

Moreover, the Avalanche have some unfinished business when it comes to the postseason. They’ve had one of the best cores in the league for years, yet aside from their Stanley Cup run in 2022, the Avalanche have never made it past the second round. Colorado could once again run into its kryptonite—the Dallas Stars—in the 2026 playoffs, and there’s no guarantee the Avs would come out of that matchup alive.

Bednar wants Colorado to play with hunger again

Thus, Bednar is wasting no time sending a message to his team. Every dog has its day—that’s a fact. But for a struggling Canucks team to have it against the No. 1 team in the league is something Colorado can’t fathom and won’t let slide.

The Avalanche have eight games left on the schedule. With their playoff spot already secured, these final games will be crucial in helping them find their mojo. If not, as Bednar bluntly warned, the Avs could be headed for another short playoff run.

Colorado should know better—these disappointing endings have a way of snowballing, and sooner or later, the team could find itself buried under an avalanche of heartbreak and self-doubt.

The New York Rangers have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention in the NHL. While that is always bad news, there is a slight silver lining for the fan base.
As discouraging as missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs is for the New York Rangers, at least fans can stand relieved that the organization will keep a long-standing tradition. Though no fan in Manhattan wants to see the Blueshirts struggle as much as they have in the 2025-26 NHL season, some may find an upside: they will save money in 2026-27.

According to The New York Post, season-ticket prices will not go up ahead of the 2026-27 NHL season. It’s part of an unspoken pact between the authorities at Madison Square Garden and the Rangers. Despite Mike Sullivan and J.T. Miller sharing a glass half-full view after missing the playoffs, if the Blueshirts don’t live up to their standard, then an increased price for season-ticket holders isn’t justified.

Despite everything that’s gone wrong this season, the “World’s Most Famous Arena” and the Rangers are staying true to their historic tradition. It’s far from a reason for jubilation, but it’s at least a bit encouraging—entirely from a financial standpoint—for fans. However, even if the prices don’t go up next season, season tickets already cost an arm and a leg in New York.

Not just the NY Rangers

As The New York Post noted, this tradition isn’t exclusive to the Rangers, but to the New York Knicks, too. When the Knickerbockers miss the NBA Playoffs, the arena decides not to raise the price for season-tickets, either. With the Knicks trending to make the postseason, it’s safe to assume their season-ticket holders won’t be safe from a price increase next season.

Mike Sullivan at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, Italy.

The last time both Madison Square Garden-based organizations failed to make the playoffs in their respective leagues was in 2018-19. That time, the Rangers finished 32-36-14, while the Knicks ended their season with a 17-65 mark (tied for worst in franchise history).

NY Rangers have nothing left to play for

Eliminated from playoff contention, the Blueshirts are now playing exclusively for their position in the 2026 NHL entry Draft. That and their own pride—though this one isn’t reflected on any stat line or ranking. With 10 games left on its schedule, New York now faces a choice: throw in the towel or compete until the end for its fans.

Despite the New York Rangers being officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, captain J.T. Miller and head coach Mike Sullivan dropped honest confessions.
With 10 games left in their schedule, the New York Rangers are officially out of the race for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s far from what Mike Sullivan and J.T. Miller had in mind coming into the 2025-26 NHL season. Still, there is a silver lining to be found—or so the leaders on Broadway believe.

“I don’t think anybody thought we’d be where we are right now eliminated with this many games left, but that’s not where my mindset is now,” Miller admitted, via NHL.com. “We failed in reaching our goal this year. Right now we are just worried about playing good hockey games to end the season.”

Out of the race on March 25, the Rangers hadn’t been eliminated from playoff contention this early in an 82-game season since the 2018–19 NHL campaign. With Sullivan behind the bench, the Broadway Blueshirts are reaching historic lows. However, the two-time Stanley Cup champion sent a positive message to Miller and the rest of the team.

“I told them after the game if we play like that with those intentions and that type of intensity, we are going to win games,” Sullivan stated. “I thought we deserved a better fate tonight. It didn’t happen, but I thought we played a pretty good game.”

Mike Sullivan during his introduction as NY Rangers head coach

NY Rangers’ losing streak

Although Sullivan reignited Rangers fans’ hopes with the debut of Adam Sykora, New York fell again. Following the 4–3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, the Rangers dropped their sixth straight in the 2025-26 NHL campaign. It’s the longest losing streak of the season for them, and they are now entering dangerous territory.

Considering the fact that New York will play its next seven games at Madison Square Garden—where the Rangers are 9–18–7 on the season—there’s a good chance the Blueshirts set a new franchise record for the longest winning drought in the same season. At the moment, the record is held by the 1962 Blueshirts, who lost 10 games in a row.

The Rangers better snap the streak fast, or they could be entering a mental battle against themselves. The weight of history is now on New York’s shoulders, and Sullivan’s side hasn’t been particularly successful at handling such pressure recently.

According to a report around the NHL, the Los Angeles Kings got involved with a Stanley Cup contender to make a move after the trade deadline.
There are no limits as to just how creative NHL teams can get. That is true both on and off the ice. This time around, the Los Angeles Kings defied all odds as they were involved in a move with the Buffalo Sabres after the trade deadline.

According to a report from Mayor’s Manor, the Kings and Sabres made a swap of players via their AHL affiliates. This is not a trade, as it a temporarily loan. Per the report, forward Kaleb Lawrence has been loaned to the Rochester Americans. In return, the Ontario Reign are welcoming in defenseman Nikita Novikov.

While the two prospects change their AHL addresses, their rights remain in possession of their NHL teams. Thus, the Kings and Sabres could engage in such a move as it’s not a trade, with Lawrence remaining in Los Angeles’ system, and Novikov in Buffalo’s.

Both 2003-born players are eligible to play for their new clubs in the Calder Cup Playoffs, provided the Rochester Americans and Ontario Reign clinch playoff berths.

Artemi Panarin of the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena

Kings’ moves in trade deadline

Ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline, the Kings didn’t shy away from engaging in trade talks. While some expected the Kings to take on a more aggressive approach, others believed they balanced it out perfectly.

The Kings shipped Corey Perry (traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning) and Warren Foegele (to the Ottawa Senators) away for draft assets, proving their long-term vision. However, they also brought in reinforcements by trading for Scott Laughton (with the Toronto Maple Leafs) and signing Mathieu Joseph to a one-year deal, after his contract had been terminated by the St. Louis Blues.

The Kings are currently three points out of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Their approach to the trade deadline paints a clear picture of the organization’s belief in the team. Los Angeles remains hopeful and may bet on itself, but it is also unwilling to go all in. Instead, it is playing its cards cautiously.

The Montreal Canadiens could be making a blockbuster move for a two-time Stanley Cup champion to bolster their roster in the 2025-26 NHL season.
No Canadian NHL team has hoisted the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens did so in 1993. The championship drought in the Great White North has stretched on for far too long. If the curse is to be lifted, it may have to be the Habs themselves who finally put an end to it.

The Edmonton Oilers came agonizingly close in 2024 and 2025, but not even Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl could overcome their struggles in net. Montreal may have learned its lesson, and although it lost in the Final in 2021 with Carey Price between the pipes, it could now be eyeing redemption in the 2025-2026 NHL season.

It seems all the Habs need is an elite goaltender—and right on cue, a two-time Stanley Cup champion could become available as Sergei Bobrovsky’s name surfaced ahead of the NHL trade deadline. Bobrovsky has looked off his game throughout the season, but a change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered to help him get back on track.

“The Montreal Canadiens could benefit from Sergei Bobrovsky,” TSN’s Craig Button commented ahead of the trade deadline on March 6th. “You look at the Montreal Canadiens this year—their goaltending hasn’t been strong enough. Look at Sergei Bobrovsky’s resume, that’s the type of player who’s been there, done that, won that.”

Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers

Is Bobrovsky on the trade block?

Entering the final year of his initially controversial seven-year, $70 million contract with the Florida Panthers, Sergei Bobrovsky has yet to sign an extension with the reigning, back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. Florida wanted to see how the season unfolded before deciding which path to take with its netminder, who played a crucial role in the team’s three straight runs to the Final.

Barring a miracle, the Panthers will miss the playoffs in the 2025–26 campaign. Thus, shipping Bobrovsky away now seems like the right call for Florida; otherwise, the club would risk losing him to free agency with nothing in return. Even if it means helping a divisional opponent compete for the Stanley Cup, trading Bobrovsky to the Canadiens could be a wise business decision.

Still, it is often overlooked just how much emotion and rivalry influence moves in the NHL. Florida might rather come away empty-handed than be the reason Montreal snaps its championship drought.

Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand, and the Florida Panthers could be welcoming back two Stanley Cup champions as the team pushes for a playoff spot in the NHL.
The 2026 Winter Olympics ended in contrasting fashion for Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marchand. Regardless of their outcome, both must now return to the Florida Panthers, who are facing a very steep climb in the 2025-26 NHL season. The Cats must catch fire if they want to clinch a playoff spot. On that note, getting two Stanley Cup champions back in the lineup could go a long way for the Panthers.

“Paul Maurice just told Joe Rose that Dmitry Kulikov and Tomas Nosek are coming out of the non-contact jersey for today’s practice,” as reported by George Richards of NHL.com.

It may take a while before Kulikov can return to the ice and Nosek can make his debut in the 2025–26 NHL campaign, but the fact that both are back practicing at full capacity is definitely a good sign.

Kulikov and Nosek may need more time

However, despite the intensity brought into the training facility by Tkachuk, Marchand, and company, it doesn’t quite equal the pace and aggressiveness of an NHL game.

Dmitry Kulikov of the Florida Panthers

Even if Kulikov and Nosek don’t wear non-contact jerseys, the rest of the team knows both are coming off long-term injuries and won’t go at full speed against them. In an NHL game, opponents won’t care about that. Thus, Paul Maurice and his staff must be completely sure Kulikov and Nosek can withstand that rhythm before sending them onto the ice.

When was Kulikov and Nosek’s last NHL game?

Tomas Nosek has yet to play a game in the 2025-26 campaign. The Czech forward underwent surgery on his knee during the summer. His last appearance for the Panthers was on Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final. Needless to say, Nosek went out with a bang, but the wait has been too long, and he hopes to be back in action soon.

As for Kulikov, the veteran defenseman sustained a labrum tear in the second game of the 2025-26 regular season. The Russian blueliner underwent surgery on his shoulder and was placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR). Four months later, he may finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are welcoming in a Stanley Cup champion after completing trade with Nathan MacKinnon's Colorado Avalanche.
Shortly after the Olympic freeze was lifted in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins completed a trade to help out Sidney Crosby with a Stanley Cup champion. In return, Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche acquired a veteran presence on the blueline.

As reported by insider Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins are sending defenseman Brett Kulak to the Avalanche in exchange for Stanley Cup–winning blueliner Samuel Girard.

According to Renaud Lavoie from TVA, the full trade includes the Avalanche sending a second round selection in the 2028 NHL entry Draft to the Penguins. The move proves how serious Pittsburgh is about its season goals. In addition to the trade with the Avs, the Penguins recently confirmed the return of a promising star, while waiting for an update on Crosby’s injury.

Numbers behind Girard and Kulak

So far in the 2025-26 NHL season, Girard has appeared in 40 games, recording three goals and nine assists (12 points). As for Kulak, the 32-year-old defenseman has played 56 games this season, putting up one goal and eight assists (nine points).

Samuel Girard (left) and Brett Kulak (right)

Girard helped MacKinnon and the Avs hoist their third Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2022. Now, he will hope to do the same for Crosby and the Penguins, who are eyeing the franchise’s sixth championship.

Crosby and MacKinnon’s teams engage in trade talks

Crosby and MacKinnon’s friendship is no secret around the NHL. It was made even clearer after Crosby offered MacKinnon an honest statement following the latter’s crucial miss against Team USA. Now, their clubs have shown a willingness to work together as well, completing a trade during the 2025–26 season.

" title="Players with the most Stanley Cup playoff appearances: From Chris Chelios to Wayne Gretzky" publication_id="BUS#/nhl/players-with-the-most-stanley-cup-playoff-appearances">

The Stanley Cup playoffs have long been the true measure of an NHL franchise’s staying power. Through decades of shifting eras, rules and rivalries, a select group of teams has turned spring hockey into a near-annual tradition built on endurance.

From Original Six royalty to modern-era contenders, playoff consistency has shaped legacies as much as championships themselves. Every return to the bracket adds another chapter to histories forged through pressure, resilience and year-after-year relevance.

At the center of that conversation sit familiar names, led by the Montreal Canadiens and closely followed by rivals like the Boston Bruins. Their numbers hint at a deeper story of longevity, adaptation and survival in the league’s harshest environment.

Montreal Canadiens | Playoff seasons: 86 | Final appearances: 33

Montreal Canadiens (Source: Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)

For any hockey fan, the name Montreal Canadiens immediately conjures the notion of dominance. It’s not just that this is the franchise with the most championships, but its history is inextricably woven with the very existence of the playoffs.

With an astonishing 86 seasons in the postseason, the Habs don’t just play in the NHL; they are the NHL, being the only active club that predates the league’s founding. Their record of 33 Stanley Cup Finals appearances is, simply put, unreachable. Yet, beyond the total numbers, a description of their Golden Age is mandatory: the dynasty that won five consecutive titles between 1956 and 1960.

Led by monumental figures like Jean Béliveau and Maurice “Rocket” Richard, during those glorious years, the team never needed a Game 7 to win a series and never trailed in a playoff matchup. The legend of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge is not just one of victories, but of a permanence and standard of excellence that places them on a unique pedestal in professional sports.

Boston Bruins | Playoff seasons: 77 | Final appearances: 20

Boston Bruins (Source: Harry How/Getty Images)

If Montreal embodies majesty, the Boston Bruins represent granite-like solidity. As the first U.S.-based team to join the NHL in 1924, the Black and Gold have forged a path of persistence and brute force, cementing their reputation with 77 trips to the postseason. Their longevity stands out, having won their first Stanley Cup in 1929 against the Rangers, in the first Final between two American teams.

Nevertheless, their legend is marked by two periods of particular brilliance. The first, in the 1970s, with the franchise’s resurrection on the shoulders of superstars like Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito, which resulted in two Cups after a near three-decade drought.

The second, in the modern era, with their 2011 triumph. Furthermore, their impressive mark of 20 Stanley Cup Finals appearances speaks to an organizational culture that, even in the worst times, always finds a way back into contention, making Boston an adversary that embodies the definition of tenacity.

Toronto Maple Leafs | Playoff seasons: 74 | Final appearances: 21

Toronto Maple Leafs (Source: Carmen Mandato/Getty Images)

The case of the Toronto Maple Leafs is a dichotomy of glorious history and demanding present. As one of the league’s Original Six teams, the Leafs have qualified for the playoffs in 74 seasons, a figure that honors their founding in 1917. Their tally of 13 Stanley Cups is a testament to a franchise that dominated different eras, especially the 1940s and the dynasty of the 1960s, when they lifted the trophy four times between 1962 and 1967.

However, for Toronto, the playoff drama is not a statistic of success, but the measure of the league’s longest championship drought. Their last title was in 1967, and since then, the franchise lives under a unique historical pressure.

Despite this and the difficulties in recent series, the fact that they have reached 21 Finals and continue to be one of the most frequent postseason clubs underscores that, while the present may be complicated, their place in the historical NHL Olympus is undisputed.

Detroit Red Wings | Playoff seasons: 64 | Final appearances: 24

Detroit Red Wings (Source: Dave Sandford/Getty Images)

The pride of “Hockeytown” is manifested in the timeless consistency of the Detroit Red Wings. With 64 seasons in the postseason and 11 Stanley Cups to their name, their greatness spans three distinct eras.

There were the “Original Six” years of the 1950s, led by the immortal Gordie Howe; then came a difficult period, derisively known as the “Dead Wings”. But their true defining mark is the NHL record of 25 consecutive playoff appearances, a streak that ran from 1991 to 2016.

This period, under the leadership of Steve Yzerman and featuring the legendary “Russian Five,” was a masterclass in maintaining a high-performance culture, translating into four titles and proving that for the Red Wings, qualification isn’t a goal, but the starting point.

Chicago Blackhawks | Playoff seasons: 63 | Final appearances: 13

Chicago Blackhawks (Source: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The Chicago Blackhawks have navigated NHL history with 63 playoff seasons, demonstrating an ability to surprise and dominate at key moments. One of their most curious milestones dates back to 1938, when they won the Stanley Cup with the worst regular-season record for a champion, thanks to the fact that six of the eight teams qualified at the time.

Nevertheless, their prominent place on this list is largely due to their recent dynasty. After a 49-year championship drought, the team burst onto the scene starting in 2010.

Led by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, the Hawks captured the Stanley Cup three times in six seasons, solidifying their position as one of the most successful teams of the 21st century. Their trajectory is a clear example of how concentrated periods of dominance can catapult a franchise up the historical postseason statistics.

New York Rangers | Playoff seasons: 63 | Final appearances: 11

New York Rangers (Source: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The team from Broadway, the New York Rangers, not only shares the mark of 63 playoff seasons with Chicago but also holds the honor of being the first U.S. franchise to lift the Stanley Cup, achieving it in 1928. Much of their historical success is concentrated in their early years, as three of their four titles were won between 1928 and 1940.

The history of the Blueshirts is marked by the intense passion of their fans and, often, by a postseason drama that extends to seven games. Despite a notorious “Curse” that lasted from 1940 until the iconic triumph of 1994, the Rangers have maintained a constant presence in the chase for the title, reaching 11 Stanley Cup Finals.

In the last decade, their resurgence has made them a frequent contender, reaching the Final in 2014, proving that in the Garden, the hope for Cup glory is a constant ritual.

St. Louis Blues | Playoff seasons: 56 | Final appearances: 4

St. Louis Blues (Source: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The St. Louis Blues have been a constant pillar in the Western Conference, boasting an impressive mark of 56 postseason seasons. Their history is a mix of consistency and, for a long time, palpable frustration.

The Blues are famous for a unique feat: they reached the Stanley Cup Finals in each of their first three seasons (1968, 1969, 1970)—an achievement no expansion team has replicated—though they were swept in all three instances.

However, what truly defines the Blues is their epic patience, which finally paid off. After decades of waiting and 52 years of existence without a championship, the team delivered one of hockey’s most inspiring redemption stories in 2019.

Fueled by a stunning second half of the season, the Blues not only qualified but were crowned champions for the first time, proving that postseason perseverance, even with only four Finals appearances, is the true measure of a contender.

Philadephia Flyers | Playoff seasons: 40 | Final appearances: 8

Philadelphia Flyers (Source: Al Bello/Getty Images)

Since their entry into the NHL during the 1967 expansion, the Philadelphia Flyers quickly established themselves as a dominant and, often, intimidating force. With 40 playoff seasons, the Flyers are the original expansion franchise with the most qualifications, surpassing their “Class of ’67” peers.

Their identity was defined in the 1970s by the “Broad Street Bullies,” a group known for their physical playing style and unmatched toughness, which captured two consecutive Stanley Cups. The Flyers’ history is one of deep and constant playoff threat.

Despite a championship drought extending since the 70s, the franchise has been a persistent competitor, reaching the Stanley Cup Final on eight occasions. This underscores their reputation as a team built for the intense postseason atmosphere, always ready to battle for the right to hoist the trophy.

Dallas Stars | Playoff seasons: 37 | Final appearances: 5

Dallas Stars (Source: Cooper Neill/Getty Images)

The count of 37 playoff seasons for the Dallas Stars is a testament to the consistency of a franchise with historical roots extending beyond Texas. Born as the Minnesota North Stars in 1967, postseason success followed them after their relocation to Dallas in 1993. Their move marked the beginning of one of their most competitive eras.

Their climax arrived in the late 90s. Under the guidance of legendary captain Mike Modano, the Stars became a Western Conference powerhouse, crowning their success by capturing their first and only Stanley Cup in 1999.

Since that title, the franchise has maintained its status as a frequent contender, reaching the Final on five occasions and demonstrating that, whether under the cold temperatures of the North or the heat of Texas, a culture of playoffs can endure.

Pittsburgh Penguins | Playoff seasons: 37 | Final appearances: 6

Pittsburgh Penguins (Source: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The Pittsburgh Penguins‘ record of 37 postseason seasons is notable not only for its frequency but for the spectacle of the players who have led the franchise. The Pens are the epitome of a franchise that has capitalized on generational talent.

Their first great era was fueled by the arrival of Mario Lemieux, who led the team to their first two consecutive Cups in the early 90s. However, recent history is even more impactful. With the arrival of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in the mid-2000s, the Penguins transformed into a playoff machine.

This dynamic core reached six Finals and managed to lift the Stanley Cup three times, becoming the first team in the salary cap era to win back-to-back championships. The Penguins represent the perfect fusion between high frequency of appearances and the ability to convert those opportunities into glory.

Los Angeles Kings | Playoff seasons: 34 | Final appearances: 3

Los Angeles Kings (Source: Harry How/Getty Images)

With 34 playoff seasons, the history of the Los Angeles Kings is that of a team that, for a long time, sought validation in a market atypical for hockey. Their early history, defined by the arrival of Wayne Gretzky in the 1990s, culminated in their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1993, though they did not lift the trophy.

Patience and meticulous rebuilding led to their era of greatest dominance. In the early 2010s, the Kings transformed into a defensive, relentless team, known for their low scoring and physical play.

Under the leadership of Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty, they managed to capture two Stanley Cups in a span of three years. Despite only three Finals appearances, the efficiency and impact of their brief dynasty solidified Los Angeles as a serious competitor, proving that quality in the postseason can outweigh quantity.

Washington Capitals | Playoff seasons: 34 | Final appearances: 2

Washington Capitals (Source: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images)

The narrative of the Washington Capitals‘ 34 postseason seasons is one of perennial contention often shadowed by the inability to secure the ultimate prize. After their rough inaugural season in 1974, the Capitals transformed into a consistent playoff fixture, especially during the 1980s and 90s, though they often faced deep-rooted rivals that thwarted their progression.

Their first taste of the Final came in 1998, a quick sweep by the Detroit Red Wings. However, the team’s modern history is defined by the quest to shed the label of being “perennial underachievers.”

Under the leadership of their star, the franchise became synonymous with regular-season dominance, winning three Presidents’ Trophies. The dam finally broke in the 2017-18 season, a legendary run that saw them conquer longtime rivals and secure their first-ever Stanley Cup, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Capitals’ history proves that consistent playoff presence, even with only two Finals appearances, is necessary for eventually achieving that career-defining breakthrough.

Calgary Flames | Playoff seasons: 31 | Final appearances: 3

Calgary Flames (Source: Dave Sandford/Getty Images)

For the Calgary Flames, their 31 playoff seasons are inextricably linked to the intense culture of Canadian hockey and one of the most storied rivalries in the sport, the “Battle of Alberta”. Since moving from Atlanta in 1980, the Flames quickly built a powerful identity, culminating in their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1986.

They tasted glory just a few years later, defeating the Montreal Canadiens in a memorable 1989 Final to claim their sole championship. The Flames’ history is marked by a passionate resilience.

Their 2004 run, which ended in a controversial seven-game loss in the Final, is remembered as a heroic charge that ignited the legendary “Red Mile” celebration in the city.

To reach three Finals and be a constant presence in the West despite sharing a division with another dynasty (Edmonton) shows a formidable institutional commitment to making the postseason the expectation, not the goal.

Colorado Avalanche | Playoff seasons: 30 | Final appearances: 3

Colorado Avalanche (Source: Elsa/Allsport)

The Colorado Avalanche’s record of 30 postseason seasons is a remarkable story of concentrated success, efficiency, and generational talent. The franchise, relocated from Quebec, made an immediate and unforgettable impact, winning the Stanley Cup in its inaugural season in Denver in 1996—a stunning feat.

This set the tone for a team built for the pressure of May and June. What truly distinguishes the Avalanche is their pristine record when it matters most: three Finals appearances have resulted in three Stanley Cup victories.

This perfect conversion rate underscores a culture of closing out series and performing at an elite level when the stakes are highest, making them one of the most efficiently successful playoff franchises in the league’s history. They prove that consistent excellence, even over a shorter history, is paramount.

Buffalo Sabres | Playoff seasons: 29 | Final appearances: 2

Buffalo Sabres (Source: Elsa Hasch /Allsport)

The Buffalo Sabres stand as a franchise with 29 playoff seasons and a loyal fan base that celebrates a rich, if frustrating, history. The team’s identity was first forged by the iconic “French Connection” line in the 1970s, which led them to their first Stanley Cup Final in 1975, a memorable series that featured the famous “Fog Game”.

Despite their persistent presence and the brilliance of players like Dominik Hasek in the 1990s, the Sabres have the unfortunate distinction of having the longest active playoff drought in the NHL.

Their second and most recent Finals appearance came in 1999, a controversial loss to the Dallas Stars. While their total of two Finals appearances is low for a team with nearly 30 playoff seasons, the Sabres’ history highlights the fine line between being a perennial contender and achieving the ultimate glory in a league defined by its grueling postseason.

An NHL insider hinted a franchise with multiple Stanley Cups on its resume could be a frontrunner to acquire Vancouver Canucks blueliner Quinn Hughes.
As long as the Vancouver Canucks keep digging even further in the hole they are currently in, rumors about Quinn Hughes leaving will only grow louder. Now, an insider in the NHL suggests an Original Six franchise with multiple Stanley Cup conquests under its belt could be a frontrunner.

The Detroit Red Wings boast one of the most exciting rosters for the future in the NHL. However, adding Hughes to the equation could truly put them head and shoulders above the rest of the league for years to come. On that note, insider Elliotte Friedman hinted the Red Wings could make a lot of sense to work out a trade with the Canucks for their franchise player.

“When I rank the teams and I say ‘who can do this and where would Hughes want to go?’ I would say Detroit is very high on my list,” Friedman commented on the Daily Faceoff’s Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast.

Who could be on the move for Hughes?

While the Red Wings have enough pieces on their NHL lineup to make an offer worth their while for the Canucks, it seems Detroit won’t look to dismantle its current squad. On that note, Friedman hinted who could be eyed by the Canucks in order to even consider trading Hughes.

Marco Kasper being introduced to fans

“Could you see Yzerman not interested in Hughes? Could you see Hughes not being interested in Detroit when the time comes? I think the [Red Wings] are very legit,” Friedman added. “Detroit has centers who can play in the NHL. And I’m not talking about depth guys. I think everybody knows who I’m talking about.”

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/nhl-news-red-wings-todd-mclellan-reveals-key-factors-after-ending-four-game-skid-vs-bruins" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20251203_BUS_538291_todd-mclellan.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="The Detroit Red Wings snapped a four-game NHL skid with a win over the Boston Bruins, as coach Todd McLelland shared insights on the victory.

Though Friedman didn’t give out any names, most fans think they know who he is talking about: Marco Kasper, the 8th overall pick in the 2022 NHL entry Draft. Another option could be Nate Danielson, the former first-round pick in 2023.

The Canucks’ nightmare season continues

Either way, it’s still too early to tell. The Canucks can still turn their season around and quiet the loud buzz around Hughes. However, with the way things have gone lately, Vancouver would almost need a miracle. Over their last 10 games, the Canucks are 2-6-2 — the worst record in the league during that span.

Moreover, Vancouver hasn’t won consecutive games since October. Needless to say, it’s been a tough season for fans in Vancity so far, and with each loss, Hughes’ name only appears in more trade rumors around the NHL.
