Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up in an exclusive interview with Bolavip about the struggles he has gone through with injuries.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was through a rough season last year, where he was dealing with a serious back injury, and now the Greek shares his very honest thoughts in this exclusive interview with Bolavip.

Last year was unlike anything he had experienced before. Battling a serious back injury, Tsitsipas endured a difficult season that saw him drop out of the top ten, now being ranked just 32 in the world.

In an exclusive interview with Bolavip at the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam, Tsitsipas opened up about the toll the past year has taken on him, sharing his honest feelings about injury, uncertainty, and how it affected his love for the game. The Greek star began the interview on a light note, joking: “Did it look like I was moving well on the court? It didn’t always feel like that.”

Feeling like an observer

From September onward, Tsitsipas only participated in one tournament—the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia. Aside from that single match, he was sidelined with injury, something he had never experienced before.

Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled with injuries over the past year.

“I had a long period without playing tennis, which I had never had before during my career. I felt like I was away from the court and the competition. Suddenly, I was just an observer of tennis and the ATP Tour, rather than an active participant,” Tsitsipas told Bolavip.

Despite feeling relatively fit during his match against Arthur Rinderknech, Tsitsipas admitted that his back is still giving him trouble, and he’s trying to manage it: “It felt very odd and frustrating because I couldn’t do much. My back is like it is, and there are only so many things I can do. If it refuses to heal, all I can do is wait and consult as many specialists as possible.”

Uncertainty and priorities

Tsitsipas also revealed the emotional toll of his struggles. “I experienced a lot of uncertainty for many months. Even when I won the tournament in Dubai, I wasn’t sure if I could sustain that level or even continue playing. It kept getting worse during the spring, and eventually, I stopped enjoying the game.

“The game becomes less important, and health becomes the most important thing in your life. Even earlier this year, I still had a lot of uncertainty about my future,” Tsitsipas concluded the interview with Bolavip.

Tsitsipas won his match against Arthur Rinderknech and will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp next. Given his recent revelations, it will be fascinating to see whether his body can keep up with the demands of the matches.

Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered an early loss in Wimbledon after retiring due to back issues.
Goran Ivanisevic teamed up with Stefanos Tsitsipas ahead of Wimbledon in May, but the renowned coach, who worked with Novak Djokovic for several years, was not impressed with what he saw in the Greek star. The Croatian legend didn’t hold back when speaking to Sport Klub about his new pupil’s physical and mental state.

“It’s simple and not simple at the same time,” Ivanisevic said. “I’ve talked to him many times. If he can sort out some issues off the court, he has a real shot at getting back to where he belongs. He’s way too talented to be outside the top 10.”

“He keeps saying ‘I want, I want,’ but there’s no follow-through,” Ivanisevic added. “I was shocked. I’ve never seen a player in worse physical condition. With this knee, I’m three times fitter than him. It’s really bad.”

Tsitsipas, once ranked No. 3 in the world, has tumbled down the ATP rankings to No. 27 following a tough first-round exit at Wimbledon. He struggled physically during his match against French qualifier Valentin Royer, ultimately retiring after dropping the first two sets, 6-3, 6-2, due to a back issue.

Tsitsipas and Ivanisevic practicing ahead of Wimbledon (Getty Images)

Tsitsipas says he has done ‘everything’ he could

Tsitsipas, for his part, said he was “left without answers” after changing his routine. “I don’t know. I’ve tried everything,” he told reporters. “I’ve done an incredible job with my fitness. I’ve done an incredible job with my physiotherapy, so I’ve maximized on everything that I possibly can do.”

The 26-year-old also opened up about the physical challenges he’s been facing over the past year. “Since that time, I’ve been battling a war of feeling healthy and feeling comfortable going to the extremes, which has been a difficult battle,” he said. “So I really don’t know.”

With the summer hard-court swing approaching, the big question is what comes next for Tsitsipas. The talent is undeniable, but with his coach raising alarm bells and the player himself at a loss for solutions, it’s hard to tell if he is going to come out of his slump.

Following a first-round loss to Valentin Royer at Wimbledon, Stefanos Tsitsipas offered a brutally honest update on his health and future in tennis.
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ struggles continued at Wimbledon 2025, where the former World No. 3 was forced to retire from his opening-round match against France’s Valentin Royer (No. 113). Tsitsipas was down 6-3, 6-2 before withdrawing due to ongoing physical issues, marking another low point in what has become a difficult stretch of his career.

The 25-year-old has battled a series of injuries and a noticeable dip in confidence since reaching the ATP Finals in Turin several seasons ago. After the match, Tsitsipas opened up about the toll it’s taken on him both physically and mentally.

“It’s tough to describe. I’m battling many wars these days,” Tsitsipas said. “It’s really painful to see myself in a situation like this. One thing that I absolutely hate doing is retiring or stopping a match, but I’ve never pictured myself being in a situation like this multiple times since the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin a couple of years back”.

“Since that time, I’ve been very fragile with my body, and I’ve been battling a war of feeling healthy and feeling comfortable going to the extremes, which has been a difficult battle,” he continued.

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece retires due physical issues against Valentin Royer of France during Wimbledon.
While the current season has been filled with setbacks, there were flashes of the talent that once carried Tsitsipas to the top three in the world. In March, he won the ATP 500 title in Dubai with a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime, and followed that up with a quarterfinal run at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he fell to Lorenzo Musetti. Still, chronic back issues have severely hampered his ability to compete consistently.

Tsitsipas considering retirement

Tsitsipas’ recent comments also suggested he’s contemplating the possibility of stepping away from the sport if his health doesn’t improve. “It’s probably the most difficult situation that I’ve ever been faced with, because it’s an ongoing issue that doesn’t seem to be disappearing or fading off as much,” he said, referencing his back. “Myself, as a person, I have a limit at some point, so I’ll definitely have to have my final answer on whether I want to do stuff or not in the next couple of months”.

“This is going to be hard, but if I see it going in that trajectory, there is no point at competing. If I’m not healthy, and I’ve talked about health so many times, if health is not there, then your whole tennis life becomes miserable,” he added.

He’s also endorsed Comlux and Melissa, a Greek pasta brand, underlining his national identity. According to Sportskeeda, these endorsements bring in an estimated $8 to $10 million annually, with Forbes listing him among the top earners under 25 in global sports endorsements in 2022.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ investments

Though more discreet than some of his peers, Tsitsipas has begun expanding his financial interests outside the court. His partnership with Comlux Aviation is reportedly more than an endorsement—it includes ambassadorial duties and potential stakeholding.

Additionally, his involvement with Ouzo 12, a Greek liquor brand, suggests early steps into lifestyle and national branding investments. His YouTube channel and curated social media presence also act as potential platforms for future media ventures.

Ninth seed Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by Benjamin Bonzi in the first round of Wimbledon. Here's what his loss mean for the ATP Rankings.
Wimbledon 2025 opened with a wave of unexpected results, marking a dramatic start to the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam. Among the biggest surprises was the early exit of Daniil Medvedev, the tournament’s ninth seed, who fell in four sets to France’s Benjamin Bonzi. On a day that also saw high temperatures break records, Medvedev’s defeat will have consequences for his ATP ranking.

In Monday’s first-round clash, Bonzi showed impressive composure and shot-making to overcome Medvedev 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. Playing under sweltering conditions, the World No. 64 was in command from the baseline and delivered an unrelenting service game. It marks a significant milestone for the Frenchman, while continuing a troubling trend for Medvedev, who has now lost in the early rounds of all three majors this season.

The defeat is particularly damaging for Medvedev’s ATP ranking. Coming into Wimbledon as the world No. 10, the Russian was defending 790 points from his semifinal run last year. By failing to advance past the first round, those points drop off his total, causing him a predicted slip to No. 14 in the ATP Rankings.

Bonzi surprised Medvedev (Getty Images)

He also falls to 16th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, jeopardizing his chances of qualifying for the year-end Nitto ATP Finals—a tournament he won in 2020. The setback is made more puzzling by his strong showing in Halle just weeks ago, where he reached the final.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/tennis/why-carlos-alcaraz-cant-overtake-jannik-sinner-for-world-no-1-no-matter-what-happens-at-wimbledon" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250627_BUS_427586_alcaraz.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Just days before he begins his Wimbledon campaign, Carlos Alcaraz already knows that no matter what happens, he won’t be able to surpass World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Tsitsipas, Rune Also Eliminated in First Round

Medvedev wasn’t the only top player to suffer an early departure at Wimbledon this year. Eighth seed Holger Rune was also knocked out in the opening round, losing to Chile’s Nicolas Jarry in a five-set thriller: 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

In another blow to the top seeds, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is currently World No. 26, was forced to retire from his match against French qualifier Valentin Royer. The Greek star trailed 6-3, 6-2 and had taken a medical timeout for a back injury during the second set before calling it quits.

With two of the top seeds already out, the door is open for more surprises along the way. However, unlike Medvedev, both Tsitsipas and Rune didn’t have much points to defend, so they will remain in their spots for now.

Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas shared his thoughts on who between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has the best chance of beating Rafael Nadal at his peak.
During this year’s French Open, tennis legend Mats Wilander stirred debate by claiming that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner might have had the tools to defeat Rafael Nadal in his prime. Stefanos Tsitsipas—himself a former Roland Garros finalist—was asked to weigh in on that bold claim.

Many fans and analysts pushed back on Wilander’s take, arguing that Nadal’s dominance at Roland Garros remains unmatched. Tsitsipas, who has faced Nadal, Alcaraz, and Sinner on clay, offered an insightful perspective.

“I have played both of them,” Tsitsipas told Tennis365, talking about Alcaraz and Sinner. “Both of them are great ball strikers, both on clay and hard, but I would favour, as a creative player more, more of a creative player on clay, I would favour Carlos”.

“I feel like he has way more options when he plays and it’s quite evident and clear. I mean, it’s not something absurd. And I would favour obviously Sinner on hard courts,” he continued. “So I would give Carlos more chances on Nadal on clay. If I have to bet my money somewhere”.

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia of Spain (L) and Rafael Nadal of Spain pose for a photo ahead of the Madrid Open.
While Tsitsipas doesn’t go as far as saying Alcaraz would defeat Nadal in his prime, he does believe the Spaniard’s versatility could make it interesting. “I feel like Carlos would have chances against prime Nadal on clay. I think so. I’m not saying he would have beaten him, but he would have had chances to create something special against him,” Tsitsipas added.

Tsitsipas on tennis’ next generation

Tsitsipas isn’t surprised by the rapid rise of Alcaraz and Sinner, who currently sit atop the ATP rankings as World No.1 and No.2, respectively. With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retired, and Novak Djokovic riding the final chapters of his career, the Greek star sees their emergence as part of the sport’s natural progression.

“It’s not annoying that these two guys are playing so well,” he noted. “This is what you expect. It’s going to keep happening that we have new champions, new stars. It’s going to keep happening“.

“It’s part of the circle of the game and how things work. I’m telling you, in the next five years, we’ll see more superstars enter the game and more players that have a different identity from those that are playing now,” he said.

Tall, talented and unapologetically passionate, Stefanos Tsitsipas has become one of the most intriguing figures in modern tennis. With a fearless game and an even bolder personality, he’s carved a path unlike any other on the ATP Tour.

The Greek star rose from junior prodigy to Grand Slam contender in just a few seasons, drawing attention not only for his shot-making flair but also for his philosophical musings and on-court fire.

His performances have electrified crowds and sometimes sparked controversy. Beyond the tennis courts, his story is layered: family ties to tennis and a social media presence that’s as unpredictable as his one-handed backhand.

How old is Stefanos Tsitsipas?

Born on August 12, 1998, in Athens, Greece, Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently 26 years old. He turned professional in 2016 and quickly ascended the ATP rankings, becoming one of the most prominent figures in men’s tennis.

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece celebrates a point against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain during the Men’s Singles Quarter Final match on Day Ten of the 2023 French Open. (Source: Clive Mason/Getty Images)

How tall is Stefanos Tsitsipas?

Standing at 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 meters), Stefanos Tsitsipas combines his height with agility, making him a formidable opponent. His stature contributes to a powerful serve and an expansive reach, enhancing his all-court game.

Is Stefanos Tsitsipas single?

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa have become one of the most followed couples on the professional tennis circuit. Their relationship began publicly in June 2023, when they posted a series of affectionate photos.

But the road hasn’t been completely smooth. In May 2024, the couple reportedly separated, citing the demands of their respective careers and the constant travel that kept them apart. This sparked a wave of speculation and concern from fans.

Yet just weeks later, they were spotted together again in Monte Carlo, and both confirmed their reconciliation during press conferences. He referred to it as “a learning curve” and described her as someone who understands him deeply.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ family

Born into a family immersed in tennis, Stefanos had no shortage of inspiration. His mother, Julia Apostoli, is a former WTA professional who represented the Soviet Union and later Greece. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 194 and played at Wimbledon, instilling discipline and love for the sport early on in his life.

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece celebrates a point against Dominic Stephan Stricker of Switzerland during their Men’s Singles Second Round match on Day Three of the 2023 US Open. (Source: Sarah Stier/Getty Images)

His father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, is a Greek tennis coach who studied sports science at the University of Athens and took the lead in developing his game from childhood. He is the oldest of four siblings. His brother, Petros Tsitsipas, is also a tennis player, though primarily focused on doubles.

The Tsitsipas family often travels together, and their tight-knit bond has always been visible on tour. Despite the eventual coaching separation between father and son, the family remains close. Stefanos has often credited his parents for shaping not only his athletic skills but also his mindset and values.

Who is the coach of Stefanos Tsitsipas?

For years, Apostolos Tsitsipas—Stefanos’ father—was a constant figure in his coaching box, guiding him through juniors to the professional spotlight. However, as he matured, so did his need for tactical independence.

In early 2025, he made the tough and emotional decision to part ways with his father as coach, stating in interviews that he wanted “a father, not a coach” at that point in his career.

Stefanos Tsitsipas poses for a photograph with the trophy after his victory over Casper Ruud of Norway in the Men’s Singles Final on day eight of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in 2024. (Source: Julian Finney/Getty Images)

In a strategic move, he brought in Goran Ivanisevic, the former Wimbledon champion and ex-coach of Novak Djokovic, to help refine his game. Ivanisevic’s arrival signaled a clear ambition to return to Grand Slam contention with fresh insights and elite experience.

Since joining forces, he has already shown improved consistency and mental resilience, which was evident in his 2025 title run in Dubai. The change also relieved some of the personal pressures that came with a family-coach dynamic.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ career highlights

2025 | Coaching change and return to form: Following a few inconsistent seasons, Tsitsipas teamed up with Goran Ivanisevic in 2025, a move that paid off quickly with a title in Dubai and deep runs in Masters events.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is facing a low point in his career. The Greek, former World No. 3, was eliminated in the second round of the 2025 French Open by 23-year-old qualifier Matteo Gigante, who surprised him with a tough five-set battle. It’s the latest blow of what has been an underwhelming season for Tsitsipas, who will be out of the Top 20 for the first time since 2018.

However, the former French Open finalist didn’t waste time to make a change. He has already appointed Goran Ivanisevic as his coach for the grass season. Ivanisevic is a former Wimbledon champion and also worked with Novak Djokovic, helping him win nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles.

“This exciting collaboration comes just in time for the 2025 grass court season, as the Greek star looks to elevate his performance on one of the most prestigious surfaces in the sport,” the Iconico Talent Agency said in a statement, which Tsitsipas posted on Instagram.

Most recently, Ivanisevic had a short stint with Elena Rybakina this season. The Croatian has also coached Marin Cilic to his only major title at the 2014 US Open, as well as Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic.

According to initial reports by Greek journalist Vicky Georgatou, Ivanisevic’s partnership with Tsitsipas “has no duration and will initially be a trial.” He will also be the “absolute boss” as the only coach on Tsitsipas’ team.

Tsitsipas will look for redemption on grass

This season, Tsitsipas has only won a title, the Dubai Championships in March, but he has suffered early exits in Madrid and Rome (second round), while reaching the quarter finals in Barcelona and Monte Carlo. He also lost in the first round of the Australian Open.

“I still want to be the best player in the world and I still want to do great things around this sport that I chose to play. My attention and focus is always to try and improve any aspect of my game,” Tsitsipas said after his loss to Gigante.

His next focus will be the grass season. Historically, Tsitsipas hasn’t enjoyed good results on grass. In Wimbledon, his best results have been reaching the fourth round. Ivanisevic will be in his coaching box for the first time at the Halle Open, which starts on June 16.

Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas are set to face significant ATP ranking downgrades following their surprise early eliminations at Roland Garros.
The drama at Roland Garros is in full swing, with shocking upsets captivating tennis fans around the globe. Following Daniil Medvedev’s first-round defeat to Cameron Norrie, World No. 8 Casper Ruud and World No. 20 Stefanos Tsitsipas have joined the list of early exits, suffering surprising second-round losses that will lead to steep drops in the ATP Rankings.

Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist in 2022 and 2023, was defeated by World No. 41 Nuno Borges in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 match where a knee injury hampered his performance. With this loss, Ruud is projected to fall to World No. 13 in the ATP Rankings and could slip further to No. 14 if Arthur Fils defeats Jaume Munar in the second round.

“Certain movements out there are kind of what makes it painful. Certain shots are painful to do,” Ruud said in his post-match press conference. “When you’re playing matches, you can’t really control it in the same way [as in practice]. You do everything you can to get to every ball. Sometimes you kind of forget that this is a shot I shouldn’t go for. It’s been okay in practice because, like I said, I’m able to control it a bit more. When you play a match, you go full on, no matter what happens”.

Tsitsipas, the 2021 Roland Garros finalist, suffered an even more shocking upset, losing 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to World No. 167 Matteo Gigante. Tsitsipas is now projected to drop out of the ATP Top 20, falling to World No. 25 and potentially slipping to No. 26 if Flavio Cobolli defeats Matteo Arnaldi in his second-round match.

Matteo Gigante of Italy celebrates his victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the second round of Roland Garros.
As for Gigante, his triumph not only sets him on course for a career-high ranking of World No. 129 but also makes him the first qualifier in 17 years to defeat a former French Open finalist in men’s singles. Eduardo Schwank was the last to do so, beating Carlos Moya in 2008.

Ruud criticizes ATP’s schedule demands

In his post-match remarks, Ruud expressed frustration with the ATP’s packed schedule and mandatory event requirements, describing it as “like a rat race.” “Well, it’s kind of like a rat race when it comes to the rankings, as well. You feel you’re obligated to play with certain rules that the ATP have set up with the mandatory events,” Ruud said. “You feel like you lose a lot if you don’t show up and play, both economically, point-wise, ranking-wise and opportunity-wise”.

The Norwegian added, “For me, I know these weeks and months are really important for the remaining of the year and for my career. Of course, if my leg is broken, I won’t play. But it’s tough anyways, especially when there’s a time with mandatory events to skip them because the punishments are quite hard”.

Ruud also highlighted the controversial aspect of the ATP’s year-end bonus system, which penalizes players who skip mandatory events by reducing their bonus by 25 percent.

“It’s a questionable system because on one hand you don’t want to show up injured, and you maybe give the spot to other one,” he explained. “I’m not sure if you’re aware, but if you don’t play a mandatory event, they cut 25 per cent of your year-end bonus. You’re kind of forcing players to show up injured or sick, or whatever, when that is not what I think is very fair”.

Madrid Open tournament officials have made a decision impacting Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Aryna Sabalenka, and Iga Swiatek.
Aryna Sabalenka was scheduled to compete on Monday at the Madrid Open, but an unexpected power outage disrupted the tournament’s plans.
In a video shared by Wimbledon’s YouTube channel in 2024, Tsitsipas was among several players, such as Sebastian Korda and Jasmine Paolini, asked to build their perfect player. While his answers for forehand and backhand didn’t make the cut, his choices for serve, heart, mentality and footwork did.

“My perfect serve is Milos Raonic’s,” he revealed. “He finds great angles when he serves, and his toss is very consistent and not very easy to read,” he argued.
For heart, he went with Nadal. Tsitsipas explained that the Spaniard is one of the “biggest competitors and fighters in modern tennis history. I think that he also shows his heart when he is out of the court, and he is able to come back from every single difficult, excruciating moment.”

And finally, he picked Federer’s mentality. “He is able to keep a consistent, quiet mentality throughout any match,” Tsitsipas explained. “He rarely shows any emotions or shows any negativity, when he is down a break. I find him very inspiring, and I feel like this is something that makes him the athlete that he is.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ start of the 2025 season

Tsitsipas, as much of the rest of the Top 10, had a rocky start of the 2025 season. At the Australian Open, he was eliminated in the first round by Alex Michelsen, a result that dropped him out of the Top 10 in the rankings.

However, after also suffering an early exit in Doha, he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the title in Dubai, which made him return to the Top 10. Then, he was eliminated by Holger Rune in the Round of 16 of Indian Wells, before losing in the second round of the Miami Open to Sebastian Korda.

Historically, Tsitsipas has been successful during the clay season. He has won three of the four past Monte Carlo Masters, including the 2024 edition. He also reached the 2021 French Open final.
