The Dallas Cowboys are always going for big moves to strengthen the team. Dak Prescott is coming back from an injury-plagued season and he wants to guide his team to NFL glory. On the other hand, there is a former Defensive Player of the Year hinting that he could still play if the right place is available.

This player is cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who played for the Cowboys in 2023. Appearing on The Money Down podcast, Gilmore said, “I want to play this year. It’s got to be the right situation. You know what I’m saying? I’m not just going to sign anywhere, so it’s got to be the right situation.”

Gilmore visited the Cowboys pre-draft before the team selected Shavon Revel Jr. in the third round. The move watered down after that but if Gilmore visited them, it seems as that would be one of the good situations he’s talking about.

Gilmore’s recent years have been good not great

Gilmore’s prime was something to remember. He is now 35 years old, but from 2016 to 2021, he was arguably the best corner in the league. In that span, he went to five Pro Bowls, was All-Pro twice and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.

When he played for Dallas, he started all 17 games, got two interceptions and 13 passes defended. Last year, he was on the Minnesota Vikings roster, where he started 15 games and got one interception. However, he allowed a 94.1 passer rate which is the worst mark in his career. While he has proven that he is still a starting-caliber corner, he is not the lock-down corner he was in the past.

Do the Cowboys need Gilmore?

Even if they drafted Revel, Gilmore could still be a valuable addition to the roster. Consider the fact that Trevon Diggs is also recovering from injury. They also brought Kaiir Elam to the roster but one could argue Gilmore is still a better option.

Whether Gilmore still wants to go to Dallas is another thing. But, if there have been contacts, you’d assume that both parties are somewhat interested. If not, Gilmore will have to weigh his options elsewhere.

With a current record of ten wins and only two losses so far this season, the Vikings will host the always tough Falcons at U.S. Bank Stadium. It was head coach O’Connell himself who has yet to confirm the availability of one of the most experienced players on the roster.

The player in question is none other than the talented cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who, in his last outing against the Cardinals, left the game in the first half with a hamstring injury and did not return.

“Gilly did get a low-grade hamstring (strain),” O’Connell said. “Still getting some evaluations on what that looks like. I do not believe it is a longer-term injury and I’m not quite ready to rule him out for this week. Want to see how he feels as we work through it.”

The New England Patriots didn’t value Stephon Gilmore anymore and pretty much showed him the door. He was coming off a big injury and there were some doubts about his durability at this point in his career.

At the end of the day, the South Carolina native was cool with being traded close to home. He’s now focused on trying to help his new team make the playoffs, which will be a bit of an uphill battle.

Besides their quarterback situation, however, the Patriots have plenty of areas to address in their roster right now. They lack an elite receiving corps, failed to establish a running game, and their once-dominant defense isn’t the same anymore.
