“I realized the perfect coach would be someone who has been through the experiences I’m going through, possibly a multiple Grand slam winner and world number one. We discussed Andy Murray and I said I would give him a call and see how it goes,” the Serbian told Sky Sports.

“It caught him a little off guard. We connected really fast and he accepted after a few days. I couldn’t be more excited about it. This collaboration is a surprise to everyone, including me, but it’s exciting for tennis,” he added.

Murray will be coaching Djokovic less than four months after ending his career at the Paris Olympics. They will work in off-season and in the build-up to the Australian Open, a tournament that Djokovic has won 10 times, being the man with the most titles.

While Djokovic won Gold at the Paris Olympics, this year was the first season since 2005 in which he did not win an ATP event. It’s also his first season since 2017 in which he didn’t win a major title, while he boasts the record with 24.

Djokovic on his own retirement

After Rafael Nadal became the latest member of the “Big Four” to hang up the racket, Djokovic also reflected on his possible retirement. “We all know we have to stop and say goodbye at some point. Even though it was expected for Rafa and Andy, both of them saying farewell to the sport is a shock for all of us,” he said.

“My body is serving me well, I still have motivation to win Grand Slams. The reason I asked Andy to work with me is because I still have big plans. I’ll keep going as much as I can feel like I can keep being a candidate for the biggest titles,” he said.

The shadow: Sinner’s doping case

Jannik Sinner’s 2024 season was marred by a doping controversy. In March, he tested positive for a banned substance, clostebol, on two separate occasions. Sinner attributed the positive tests to accidental contamination through a medicated cream used by his physiotherapist.

An independent tribunal cleared him of wrongdoing, but the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) subsequently appealed the decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to make a final ruling on the case in the coming months.

Jannik Sinner ended his outstanding 2024 season by lifting the ATP Finals in Turin after defeating Taylor Fritz in the final (6-4 6-4). The Italian was so dominant that he broke Roger Federer’s previous record in the tournament of fewer games conceded since the change of format in 2008.

Compared to the ‘Big 3’, this win also means he is the first player outside of Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to win three of the five biggest annual events (four GS and the Finals) in the same year since Pete Sampras in 1997.

And, if that wasn’t enough, the Italian also joins Federer and Djokovic as the only men to have won the Australian Open, the US Open and the ATP Finals in the same year. Sinner also ends the year as the World No. 1.

“It’s amazing – it’s my first title in Italy and it means so much to me,” said Sinner in his post-match interview. “It’s something very special. It was a very high level tournament from my side. At times I couldn’t have played better, so I am very happy.”

Taylor Fritz ends the year as fourth ranked despite losing

While Fritz couldn’t lift the trophy in Turin, he ended the year with a career-high ranking of World No. 4. “It’s been a really good week for me, it’s a good way to end the year and gives me a lot of confidence. I have a good idea of what I need to improve, but I also feel like I’m playing very good tennis,” he told the press.

Sinner wins record-breaking prize money

For being victorious without losing a game, Sinner earned a record $4,881,100, the highest payout for a tournament winner in tennis. Also, in the tournament’s current format, Sinner won 1,500 ranking points, as he won the event after going undefeated in the round-robin stage.

Tennis Channel has removed analyst Jon Wertheim from their air “indefinitely,” after he was caught on camera making inappropriate comments about Barbora Krecijkova’s appearance during their coverage of the WTA Finals. The Wimbledon champion criticized him on her social media accounts.

In the clip, which has now gone viral, Wertheim, who apparently wasn’t aware he was on air, said of Krejcikova: “Who do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova? Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and Zheng take the court.” The comments were made ahead of Krecijkova’s semifinals match against Qinwen Zheng on Friday.

In response, the Czech wrote on X: “You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance. As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary. This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world.”

“I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media. These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field. I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honours the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

While Wertheim apologized on X, the broadcaster announced their decision to remove him from air on Sunday, Nov. 10th. “The network also apologized to the player, Barbora Krejcikova, as did Jon. Jon has dedicated his career to shining a light on and growing this sport and has been a valued member of our family and the tennis community. That said, Tennis Channel holds its employees to a standard of respectfulness for others at all times, a standard that was not met in this moment,” they wrote in a statement.

Wertheim’s apology to Krecijkova

Wertheim apologized for the comments in a post on X, saying: “During a Tennis Channel studio show on Friday, I made some deeply regrettable comments off-air. I acknowledge them. I apologize for them. I reached out immediately and apologized to the player.”

After explaining that he thought the rehearsal was off air, he concluded with: “I realize: I am not the victim here. It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry.”
