The NBA playoffs have long served as a measure of who can endure its pressure-packed rhythm. Over time, only a handful of players managed to stay present through repeated runs, stacking games that reveal a different kind of greatness.

Their paths unfolded in varied ways: anchored by powerhouse teams, lifted by breakout seasons or sustained through sheer stability. Each appearance extended a legacy built on durability as much as performance.

Even without the rankings in view, the scale of their postseason careers suggests something larger—an uncommon ability to return to the league’s harshest stage and meet its demands again and again.

Which NBA star played the most playoff games?

When the question is “Who has played the most games in NBA playoff history?”, the answer lands squarely on LeBron James. As of the latest tally, he leads all players with 292 career playoff games.

LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025. (Source: Sam Hodde/Getty Images)

What’s remarkable isn’t just the number, but what it represents: decades of excellence, recurring contention, and an uncanny ability to remain essential as teams, teammates and playoff contexts changed around him. His postseason longevity surpassed previous-era veterans by combining durability with elite performance.

By the time he claimed the record (during the 2020 Finals), he had already played through multiple franchises — evolving from prodigy in Cleveland, to champion in Miami and leader in Los Angeles. The result is a playoff résumé that spans eras, rules changes and generational shifts.

NBA players with the most playoff games

LeBron James | 292 playoff games

LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025. (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

The definition of postseason longevity in the NBA traces directly to the name LeBron James. With 292 playoff games played, his career reads like a chronicle of sustained relevance across eras, teammates, and shifting expectations. He has transcended the idea of a single peak; instead, he’s built a resume defined by consistency, adaptability, and dominance under pressure.

From his early Finals with Cleveland to title runs with Miami and Los Angeles, his presence in the most clutch moments became a given. His legacy isn’t just about raw talent, but about maintaining that talent at a level demanding excellence — season after season, playoff after playoff.

Derek Fisher | 259 playoff games

Derek Fisher (Source: Harry How/Getty Images)

Derek Fisher’s name served for years as the gold standard for postseason endurance. With 259 playoff appearances, he spent over a decade as the all-time leader, embodying the kind of consistency that doesn’t always grab headlines but endures in record books.

His value went far beyond box-score stats; he was a glue-guy, a veteran anchor in franchises that repeatedly went deep into the playoffs. He survived roster changes, injuries and the shifting tides of NBA dynasties — proving that longevity often demands more of heart and timing than flash.

Tim Duncan | 251 playoff games

Tim Duncan (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Quietly commanding and eternally steady, Tim Duncan racked up 251 playoff games across a near two-decade career with the San Antonio Spurs — a testament to both personal discipline and organizational consistency.

He wasn’t a highlight-reel flash; he was the kind of presence that stabilized a team’s spine. His playoff longevity speaks to a stable environment, unshakeable fundamentals and a basketball IQ that made him reliable in moments when others crack. Every postseason appearance wasn’t just another stat — it was another chapter of quiet dominance woven into the fabric of Spurs history.

Robert Horry | 244 playoff games

Robert Horry (Source: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)

For Robert Horry, 244 postseason games reflect a career defined by durability and clutch impact more than by consistent numbers. His journey spanned multiple teams and dynasties, marking him as a perennial postseason fixture.

He navigated the league’s shifting sands — from Houston to Los Angeles to San Antonio — adapting roles, systems and expectations. He didn’t always lead in scoring or rebounds, but he showed up when matters were biggest.

His name became synonymous with “big shot”, yet behind that moniker lies a career built on persistence, readiness and a capacity to endure — to keep showing up, season after season, when others came and went.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar | 237 playoff games

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Source: Stephen Dunn /Allsport)

As a bridge between eras, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played 237 playoff games, building a legacy that spanned decades and evolving styles of the game. His longevity speaks not only to longevity of career but to excellence maintained across changing basketball landscapes.

From his early days in Milwaukee to championship years in Los Angeles, he stood as a symbol of sustained greatness. He wasn’t just a star in one era — he remained relevant as the league transformed around him.

His playoff record reflects adaptation, dominance and an unwavering commitment. In his era, postseason survival wasn’t guaranteed; his ability to thrive across it marks him among the most enduring legends the NBA has ever seen.

Tony Parker | 226 playoff games

Tony Parker (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Tony Parker’s postseason résumé is built on steadiness rather than spectacle. Across 226 playoff games, he became the rhythmic pulse of the San Antonio Spurs‘ dynasty, navigating defenses with his trademark bursts to the rim and the poise of a veteran far beyond his years.

What stands out about his playoff legacy isn’t just longevity — it’s how seamlessly he adapted to shifting eras within the same franchise. Whether sharing the floor with an aging core or shepherding younger rotations, he remained the steady hand that kept San Antonio’s offense breathing in tense, low-margin situations.

Kobe Bryant | 220 playoff games

Kobe Bryant (Source: Harry How/Getty Images)

Few names are as entwined with postseason intensity as Kobe Bryant. His 220 playoff appearances are a monument to competitiveness, forged across waves of Lakers reinventions — from three-peat dominance to grueling rebuilds and title chases.

He thrived where pressure thickened. His playoff career reflects not only elite scoring, but an uncompromising insistence on bending the series to his will. Each run added another layer to the mythology surrounding one of the NBA’s fiercest competitors.

Manu Ginobili | 218 playoff games

Manu Ginobilli (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

Manu Ginobili built a postseason legacy rooted in creativity, disruption, and timing. With 218 playoff games, he became one of the rare players whose impact often exceeded his minutes or role designation.

His playoff arc includes momentum-shifting threes, fearless drives, and defensive gambles that swung entire series. His adaptability — sixth man, starter, closer — reflects a career defined not by labels but by influence, making him one of the most quietly essential performers in modern postseason history.

Shaquille O’Neal | 216 playoff games

Shaquille O’Neal (Source: Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Shaquille O’Neal’s playoff presence was as immovable as his frame. Amassing 216 postseason games, he exerted a gravitational pull that reshaped opposing game plans long before tip-off.

His playoff years include dominant Finals runs, bruising interior battles, and the kind of physical imposition that forced entire defenses to compromise. Longevity in the postseason isn’t always kind to big men, yet Shaq maintained his influence deep into his career, evidence of both durability and unmatched interior force.

Scottie Pippen | 208 playoff games

Scottie Pippen (Source: Getty Images)

Scottie Pippen’s 208 playoff games underline his role as one of the NBA’s most versatile postseason performers. He operated as a connective tissue — elite defender, secondary playmaker, transition engine — whose influence often lived between the box score lines.

Across multiple eras and team constructions, he remained a constant. His postseason longevity reflects a skill set that aged gracefully, one built on anticipation, adaptability and an innate understanding of playoff basketball’s finer details.

Al Horford | 197 playoff games

Al Horford (Source: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Al Horford’s career shows that postseason value isn’t always tied to flash. With 197 playoff appearances, he has become one of the modern era’s most durable and quietly influential bigs, blending defensive intelligence with timely shooting and veteran composure.

His playoff longevity spans multiple franchises, systems, and roster cycles — yet his role rarely changes: stabilize the defense, stretch the floor, anchor possessions when the pace tightens. His presence in this top tier is a testament to how basketball IQ and versatility can extend a playoff life as effectively as raw athleticism.

Danny Ainge | 193 playoff games

Danny Ainge (Source: Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Danny Ainge’s postseason career is one of subtle endurance, the kind that rarely earns top billing yet remains essential to winning cultures. His 193 playoff appearances place him among the most battle-tested guards in league history, a reflection of how consistently he fit winning environments.

His game wasn’t anchored in explosive scoring or superstar shine. Instead, he excelled within the margins — spacing the floor, accepting defensive challenges, and playing with an edge that often disrupted opponents at key junctures.

His playoff longevity came from adaptability: he survived era shifts, roster changes, and evolving roles without losing relevance. In a league shaped by stars, his sustained presence reminds how vital connective players are in the crucible of the postseason.

Karl Malone | 193 playoff games

Karl Malone (Source: Ronald Martinez/Allsport)

Karl Malone’s playoff volume tells a story of relentless consistency. With 193 postseason games, he stands as one of the few players whose durability and productivity kept their teams in perennial contention over a decade and a half.

His postseason identity was rooted in physicality and precision — bruising screens, punishing mid-range jumpers, and a body built for 48-minute battles. The Utah Jazz leaned on him the way few franchises have relied on a single forward, and year after year he delivered.

His playoff legacy is complex: enormous individual production paired with a championship gap. But in terms of sheer postseason presence, he remains one of the era’s immovable pillars, a power forward who simply refused to wear down.

Magic Johnson | 190 playoff games

Magic Johnson (Source: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)

Magic Johnson’s relationship with the postseason was almost theatrical: each round offered another stage for invention. With 190 playoff games, he became not just a participant in championship runs, but one of the architects of modern postseason basketball.

His impact was multidimensional. He orchestrated offenses as if conducting a live performance — pushing tempo, reading defenses two steps ahead, and bending matchups with his unprecedented size-and-skill combination at point guard.

His playoff longevity reflects not only the Lakers’ dynasty, but his ability to elevate the stakes with charisma and precision. Few players in NBA history carried a postseason identity as instantly recognizable and consistently influential.

Robert Parish | 184 playoff games

Robert Parish (Source: NBA)

Robert Parish’s playoff résumé is a lesson in longevity powered by discipline. Across 184 postseason games, he became the quiet backbone of frontcourts built around more spotlighted stars, yet his reliability was often the detail that kept title-caliber teams grounded.

His postseason value didn’t rely on gaudy scoring lines. Instead, he provided stable interior defense, sound rebounding, and a mid-range touch that complemented Hall of Fame teammates.

His durability — both physical and mental — allowed him to bridge eras of basketball without sacrificing effectiveness. He may not be the loudest name on the list, but few players embody the concept of postseason endurance more efficiently.

San Antonio Spurs legend Tony Parker recalled a memorable encounter with Kobe Bryant, highlighting the Los Angeles Lakers star’s intense dedication during their battles in the NBA.
Tony Parker is undoubtedly a San Antonio Spurs legend, known for his leadership, accolades, and consistent impact across a dynasty that defined an era. Throughout his storied NBA career, Parker faced off against some of the game’s greatest icons—and among them was the late Kobe Bryant legend of the Los Angeles Lakers. During a recent appearance, Parker shared a remarkable and humorous story that offered fresh insight into just how real Bryant’s famed “Mamba Mentality” truly was.

The former Spurs point guard joined Twitch streamer Kai Cenat’s “30 Days of Summer” marathon and gave the AMP crew a guided tour of his impressive Texas estate. From his private basketball court to a sprawling 6,000-square-foot gym, Parker showcased a life built on championship success. But the highlight of the tour came inside his hidden “Champions Room,” where he stores prized memorabilia—including his NBA championship rings, All-Star jerseys, and the 2007 Finals MVP trophy. There, Parker recounted an unforgettable anecdote about Kobe Bryant that left everyone in awe.

According to Parker, during one of their intense postseason clashes, Bryant shocked him by trash-talking—in fluent French. “He started to trash-talk me in French during the Playoffs,” Parker recalled with a grin. “He learned the language to trash-talk me. Because you know, Kobe used to guard me. They put Kobe on me all the time. And he would start talking in French, I was like, ‘Wow!’” The story perfectly encapsulates Bryant’s obsessive competitive edge—willing to learn a new language just to gain a psychological edge during high-pressure games.

Such a move fits the legendary Mamba profile: doing anything possible not just to win, but to dominate and mentally unsettle opponents. For Parker, the experience was less insult than revelation—proof of Bryant’s relentless commitment to excellence and his unrivaled intensity on the court.

Tony Parker vs Kobe Bryant: A rivalry built on greatness

Throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, few rivalries in the Western Conference were more compelling than those between Tony Parker’s San Antonio Spurs and Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers. As cornerstones of two iconic dynasties, Parker and Bryant crossed paths in numerous high-stakes battles that helped define a golden generation of NBA basketball.

Between 2001 and 2013, the Spurs and Lakers met in the playoffs five times, with Los Angeles narrowly edging the series matchups 3–2. One of the most memorable clashes came in the 2008 Western Conference Finals, where Bryant led the Lakers to a five-game victory over the defending champion Spurs. While Parker averaged 18.6 points and 6.4 assists during the series, Bryant’s 29.2 points per game proved decisive in carrying L.A. back to the NBA Finals.

Parker got his payback in 2013, when San Antonio swept an injury-riddled Lakers squad in the Western Conference Semifinals. Though Bryant missed the series with a torn Achilles, Parker seized the moment, averaging 24.5 points and 9.5 assists to power the Spurs to the next round. San Antonio ultimately advanced to the Finals, where they narrowly fell to the Miami Heat in a thrilling seven-game series.

Off the court, the rivalry was marked by mutual respect. Parker consistently praised Bryant’s work ethic, competitive spirit, and clutch mentality, while Bryant lauded Parker’s speed, intelligence, and composure under pressure. Though they played different roles—Kobe the high-scoring alpha guard, Parker the cerebral floor general—both were synonymous with championship basketball and set the standard for excellence in their era.

Before becoming a legend with the San Antonio Spurs, Tony Parker had to work hard to earn the respect of Tim Duncan.
Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili formed an unforgettable Big Three with the San Antonio Spurs that dominated the NBA for more than a decade. But things didn’t start off easy for the French point guard, who had to put in serious effort to win over the two-time league MVP.

“The first time I saw Timmy, I was like, man, I was kind of impressed,” Parker admitted in a January 2025 interview on the Knuckleheads podcast. “Obviously, I knew he was a superstar—multiple All-Star, MVP of the All-Star Game—I knew he was the franchise, basically. So, I knew that if I wanted to have a chance to be the point guard of that team, I had to earn Tim’s respect.“

Tony arrived in San Antonio after being selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 Draft. At the time just 19 years old, the point guard had played two standout seasons with Paris Basket Racing, earning Best Young Player and Most Improved Player honors in the French league—but he still had to prove himself in the NBA.

Looking back on those early days with the Spurs, Parker acknowledged that Duncan didn’t make it easy for him. “He made it tough on me like the whole first year,” said the guard. “People think I joke when I say this, but it’s true. He didn’t talk to me the whole first year. I don’t think he believed that a little Frenchie could be his point guard for the next 10 years, you know.”

Tony Parker and Gregg Popovich

That’s surprising considering Parker made an immediate impact on the team. In fact, during his rookie season he played in 77 of 82 games and started in 72 of them. That showed how much head coach Gregg Popovich valued him from the start—but Duncan held a higher standard.

“It’s not until I played great against GP (Gary Payton) in the playoffs that he finally talked to me,” recalled the French star. He was referring to the first-round series of the 2001–02 Western Conference playoffs, when the Spurs defeated the Seattle SuperSonics 3–2. In that series, Parker started all five games and averaged 29.5 minutes per game, putting up 17.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

According to Tony, that was the turning point in how Duncan viewed him. “He was like, ‘Man, if he can play good against Gary Payton, I think we have something,’” the guard speculated. “But I didn’t back down. Mentally I was ready, my dad did a great job to prepare me and I was ready for my rookie season and my first year with the Spurs, Timmy won MVP of the NBA.”

That year, the Spurs were eliminated in the semifinals by the Los Angeles Lakers, but it laid the groundwork for the following season. With Ginobili now part of the squad, San Antonio went on to win the championship in the 2002–03 season, and Tony Parker firmly established himself as a key piece of the team, playing in all 82 games and forming the ideal partnership with Duncan, who won league MVP for a second straight year and also claimed Finals MVP honors.

Four-time NBA champion and San Antonio Spurs legend Tony Parker revealed who he believes is the greatest player in league history.
The NBA has been graced by countless superstars, each leaving their own unique mark on the sport. Among them is Tony Parker, the French point guard who dazzled fans for 17 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, earning Finals MVP honors in 2007 and setting the franchise record for career assists.

Now retired from professional basketball, the former point guard joined the ongoing debate that has captivated fans and players alike for years—the search to determine who truly stands as the greatest player in NBA history.

In a 2020 interview with Kobini Sports, Parker reflected on his experiences playing against LeBron James and Kobe Bryant during their primes, as well as Michael Jordan toward the end of his career. For Parker, the Chicago Bulls legend stands alone at the top. Additionally, Parker ranked Bryant above James in his list.

“I played LeBron in his prime, Kobe in his prime, Jordan late in his career. For me, Jordan is the best player of all time,” Parker admitted. “Kobe was incredible. LeBron of course very very strong, but I think that Kobe was better. When we played the Lakers, it was a big rivalry—Lakers vs. Spurs. So I never said to myself, ‘Oh! We have beaten twice the best player in the world,’ because for me it was Kobe”.

Parker and the Spurs famously defeated LeBron James in two NBA Finals, first in 2007 when James was with the Cleveland Cavaliers and again in 2014 during James’ tenure with the Miami Heat.

Parker picks his all-time starting five of former teammates

In January 2025, Parker appeared on the Knuckleheads Podcast, where he was tasked with assembling his ideal starting five comprised solely of former teammates.

Darius Miles, one of the podcast hosts, preemptively included Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili in the lineup, knowing their inclusion was a no-brainer for Parker. To complete his squad, Parker remained loyal to the Spurs’ franchise. “David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard,” Parker said. “I’m staying with the Spurs”.

Robinson, played a key role in securing the Spurs’ first championship in 1999 alongside Duncan. Leonard, on the other hand, was the driving force behind San Antonio’s 2014 title run, earning Finals MVP honors for his stellar two-way play.

Parker’s selection reflects the Spurs’ storied history, as each member of his starting five has at least one championship with the franchise. Duncan, the cornerstone of the team’s success, leads the pack with five titles, while the “Big Three” of Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan remain synonymous with San Antonio’s dominance during the 2000s and early 2010s.

Former San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker weighed in on the long-standing debate about the greatest basketball players of all time, revealing his personal “NBA Mount Rushmore.”
Over the years, the NBA has seen countless superstars who have left an indelible mark on the game. Among them is Tony Parker, the French point guard who spent 17 years dazzling fans in San Antonio, becoming the first European player to win NBA Finals MVP and the Spurs’ all-time leader in assists.

Now retired from professional basketball, the former point guard entered the timeless debate that often arises among fans and players alike—a conversation that has long sought to categorize different athletes as the greatest in NBA history.

In an interview with Sport Bible, Parker didn’t hesitate to share his top four. “Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal,” he said, listing the players he believes stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Despite forming a legendary trio with Tim Duncan and Manu Ginóbili during his career, and competing alongside and against countless stars, Parker made it clear that in his eyes, no one can match the legacy of his selected Mount Rushmore players.

Parker’s all-time starting five of former teammates

In an appearance on the Knuckleheads Podcast, Parker was asked to create his ideal starting five featuring former teammates.
Parker’s selections underscore the rich history of the Spurs franchise. All five players in his all-time lineup were instrumental in at least one of San Antonio’s five championships.

Duncan, the undisputed leader of the group, holds all five titles, while the contributions of Parker, Ginóbili, Robinson, and Leonard cement their place in Spurs lore.

The San Antonio Spurs finalized the acquisition of De'Aaron Fox as they approach the decisive stretch of the season. Now, a former NBA champion with the franchise has drawn an intriguing comparison between the dynamic guard and legend Tony Parker.
The San Antonio Spurs have faced an inconsistent 2024-25 NBA season, marked by up-and-down performances from a young team still in development. To enhance their chances of success this year and provide more support for rising star Victor Wembanyama, they traded for De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings in a deal that also involved the Chicago Bulls, several players, and multiple draft picks. In the aftermath of the trade, former Spurs forward Stephen Jackson offered his thoughts on Fox’s potential, drawing a striking comparison to Tony Parker.

“I love it, man,” Jackson said during an appearance on All The Smoke Unplugged, expressing his excitement about Fox’s arrival in San Antonio. “This is a better version of Tony Parker,” he added, making a bold statement about one of the most iconic players in Spurs history.

Expanding on his reasoning, Stephen delved into the unique traits of Fox‘s game. “But he’s just left-handed,” he pointed out, acknowledging the differences between Fox and the former French guard. “He might be faster than Tony Parker. He’s a better scorer, and he’s a better athlete,” Jackson explained, highlighting Fox’s physical attributes and skill set.

With his extensive experience, Stephen Jackson is well-positioned to make such a comparison. He played alongside Tony Parker during two separate stints in his career—first between 2001 and 2003, when both were young contributors to the Spurs’ 2003 NBA championship run, and later during a brief reunion in the 2012-13 season.

Tony Parker #9 and Stephen Jackson #3 of the San Antonio Spurs in Game two of the 2003 NBA Finals against the New Jersey Nets.

Fox as a key complement to Wembanyama

Stephen Jackson was also optimistic about the impact De’Aaron Fox could have on the Spurs, not only as an individual contributor but as a complement to the team’s existing talent. “To pair him up with Wemby (Victor Wembanyama), along with (Stephon) Castle,” Jackson highlighted, referencing the potential for an exciting young core.

Jackson took his vision even further, suggesting another possible future move: “And have the possibility to get another star, like Jimmy Butler.” He concluded by stating, “I think that was the best move made besides the other moves in Dallas.”

Fox’s expectations in San Antonio

On Wednesday, ahead of the San Antonio Spurs’ game against the Atlanta Hawks, the franchise shared a press conference featuring De’Aaron Fox on their official YouTube channel, marking his first comments after joining the team.

The 27-year-old guard expressed a sense of optimism about the next chapter of his career. “I think, with the way that they are built, the athleticism, and also the youth, I just feel that this could be a special team,” Fox said, alluding to the potential for success in San Antonio.

San Antonio Spurs icon Tony Parker shared his thoughts on the NBA’s rising stars and revealed who he believes will soon emerge as the league's top player.
Having enjoyed an illustrious career marked by multiple championships and accolades, Tony Parker’s vast experience has given him a keen eye for talent. Now, the San Antonio Spurs legend has weighed in on who he thinks will dominate the NBA in the near future.

During an appearance on the Knuckleheads podcast, Parker spoke highly of his fellow countryman, Victor Wembanyama. “The way he carries himself—he’s just unbelievable. His rookie season was unbelievable. His second year has been amazing so far, and I think he should be an All-Star,” he said. “And I think in two years, yeah, I think he’s going to be the best player in the NBA.”

While their playing styles differ significantly, both Parker and Wembanyama share more than just nationality. Both Frenchmen entered the NBA at 19, joining the Spurs at pivotal moments in the franchise’s history.

“I’m so proud of him. You know, seeing him as a kid and going through ASVEL—you know, my team—he won a championship in France with ASVEL,” Parker said. “To see him, like—it was destiny to go to San Antonio and the Spurs.”

Victor Wembanyama #1 of the San Antonio Spurs reacts after a basket against the Los Angeles Clippers.

A new era for San Antonio Spurs

Parker believes Wembanyama is poised to lead the Spurs into a new era, following in the footsteps of previous legendary big men. “I think we’re very lucky, and we should appreciate that in San Antonio. Like—after David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and now Victor—it’s crazy. The tradition of big men with the Spurs—and I hope he’s going to bring us a lot of championships,” Tony said.

Parker fondly recalled Robinson’s impact on the Spurs, noting the success the franchise enjoyed in the late ’90s and early 2000s with titles in 1999 and 2003. Duncan, who came up while David was still playing, continued the winning legacy after Robinson’s retirement. Now, with Duncan gone since 2016, the responsibility is shifting to Wembanyama.

“You know, we’ve been losing the last five, six seasons since the ‘Big Three’ (Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili) left,” the former guard reflected. “And so, I hope he can bring back the Spurs —You know, winning, in the winning ways — And try to contend for championships.”

Parker’s hopes for France

Parker’s confidence in Wembanyama extends beyond the Spurs, as he also has high hopes for the future of French basketball. “For Victor and for France, it was already nice to play in the Olympic finals to get a silver medal,” he said. “When I see the new generation like Victor and all the players who were at that team, I think we can be very proud as French people.”

San Antonio Spurs legend Tony Parker built his All-Time starting five using only former teammates from his illustrious NBA career.
When discussing the storied history of the San Antonio Spurs, Tony Parker’s name is inseparable from the franchise’s success. Alongside Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, Parker formed the “Big Three” that powered the Spurs to four of their five NBA championships.

During a recent appearance on the Knuckleheads Podcast, Parker was asked to craft his ideal starting five made up of former teammates. Darius Miles, the podcast’s co-host, didn’t wait for Parker’s selections and preemptively included Duncan and Ginobili on the list, knowing they were automatic picks for the French guard. To round out his team, Parker stayed loyal to the Spurs. “David Robinson and Kawhi Leonard,” Parker said. “I’m staying with the Spurs”.

Robinson was instrumental in the Spurs‘ first-ever championship in 1999 alongside Duncan, while Leonard was pivotal in securing the franchise’s most recent title in 2014, earning Finals MVP honors in the process.

Parker’s lineup reflects the rich history of the Spurs, with each of the five players winning at least one championship with the franchise. Duncan leads the pack, boasting all five of San Antonio’s titles, while the legacy of the “Big Three” will forever be etched into the organization’s DNA.

Tim Duncan #21 of the San Antonio Spurs calls a timeout as Tony Parker #9 and Manu Ginobili #20 look on against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The early struggles of the ‘Big Three’

Despite their eventual dominance, the early days of Parker’s partnership with Duncan and Ginobili weren’t without challenges. Early in their careers, rumors swirled that Parker wasn’t passing the ball to Ginobili enough, creating tension among fans and the media.

Parker addressed the controversy during Ginobili’s jersey retirement ceremony in 2019. “Before I start, I want to clarify something with Argentina — well, with the Argentine media. Manu and I had a rough start when I began my career. All of Argentina was mad at me because they said I never passed the ball to Manu. And I never understood that anger because Popovich designed the plays,” Parker said, jokingly recalling the early criticism.

Parker’s bold prediction about Wembanyama

Tony Parker and current Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama share unique ties despite their differences in playing style and physique. Both hail from France, played for ASVEL Basket, and eventually found their way to San Antonio.

Parker, who has followed Wembanyama’s progress closely, didn’t hold back when asked about the young star’s potential. “His rookie season was unbelievable,” Parker said. “His second year has been amazing so far, and I think he should be an All-Star. And I think in two years, yeah, I think he’s going to be the best player in the NBA”.

San Antonio Spurs’ legendary coach Gregg Popovich has been sidelined for several months following a mild stroke. While he continues to recover, the Spurs traveled to Paris for two NBA games, and French icon Tony Parker offered an update on Pop’s health.
On November 2, 2024, ahead of a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Gregg Popovich suffered a mild stroke, which led to his temporary leave of absence from his coaching duties in the NBA. Since then, updates on his recovery have been few but positive. Tony Parker, a former San Antonio Spurs star and close friend of Pop, shared an optimistic update.

Ahead of the Spurs’ games in Paris against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday and Saturday, Parker spoke with RMC Sport about Popovich’s situation, offering insight into the coach’s current state.

“I have news from Pop. He’s doing very well,” Tony confirmed, adding that the head coach deeply regrets missing the Spurs’ trip to Paris. “He’s definitely disappointed to miss the Paris trip. He was here this summer during the Olympics and was excited to return,” he said.

However, the French legend emphasized that Popovich’s recovery comes first. “For now, his health is the priority,” Parker stated, before offering a hopeful note: “He’s doing well, which is good news for the future.”

Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs during their game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Support for Popovich’s recovery

Tony Parker wasn’t the only one to speak about Gregg Popovich’s recovery in recent days. San Antonio Spurs CEO R.C. Buford also provided an optimistic update on the coach’s health: “He’s been improving every week,” the CEO assured, according to journalist Maxime Aubin.

Despite the positive progress, Buford remained cautious about Popovich’s return date, adding: “We don’t know when he will be back, but he will be at some point.” This statement solidified the belief that the 75-year-old coach will eventually resume his duties, with interim head coach Mitch Johnson filling in during Popovich’s absence.

The Spurs’ struggles and the Paris opportunity

While the updates on Popovich’s recovery are promising, the Spurs’ performance on the court has been less than ideal. With a 3-7 record over their last 10 games, San Antonio has fallen behind in the Western Conference standings. The team will need to find its rhythm quickly if it hopes to stay in playoff contention.

France and San Antonio Spurs legend Tony Parker wants two NBA stars to replace Rudy Gobert in the national team.
Even without San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, who opted out to get ready for his NBA debut, the French national team was expected to be a contender in the FIBA World Cup. However, that was far from the case.

Minnesota Timberwolves star Rudy Gobert was awful throughout the entire tournament, and the team as a whole struggled to establish its presence on either side of the court.

That’s why Hall of Famer Tony Parker went out of his way to put his compatriots on blast, even urging Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid to join Wembanyama and the national team in the Olympics.

Tony Parker Rips France, Wants Two Stars To Replace Rudy Gobert

“There, we really experienced a fiasco,” Parker said on RMC radio. “I talked about it for a long time with Nicolas Batum, we spoke for an hour on the phone, and it’s true that it’s very, very disappointing. It’s not normal for such a team to lose in the first round. We have never seen Spain and the United States go out in the first round. And it’s a shame because our generation worked so hard to bring France back to a certain level, so that we could be respected, by FIBA, the referees, the other countries. It’s so hard to have respect. Latvia had a great match. They had some crazy shots, but it’s not normal. It’s still a bit of a shame”.

“They are going to have big choices to make,” Parker said. “If you bring back big players like Joel Embiid, and Victor, it has to be complementary with the rest, because it could mean the departure of certain cornerstones, which can make headlines. We have to improve the team, we need changes, but it’s not going to be easy.”

Parker isn’t the first former or active player who throws shade at Gobert, and he definitely won’t be the last, so it’ll be interesting to see what decisions they make ahead of the Olympics.
