Match Preview: What’s at stake?

Italy and Turkiye meet again just one week after their first UEFA Nations League encounter, but the stakes are very different for the two teams. Italy currently sit third in League A, Group A1 with four points from three matches, behind France on seven and Belgium on six. Turkiye are at the bottom with zero points after losing all three of their games.

The Azzurri have responded strongly after losing 2-0 to Belgium on Matchday 1. They defeated Turkiye 4-1 in Bursa on September 28, then earned a valuable 1-1 draw away against France on October 2, with Alessandro Bastoni scoring the equalizer. Another victory in Bologna would give Roberto Mancini‘s team seven points and put them firmly into the fight for one of the group’s top two positions.

For Turkiye, the situation is considerably more urgent. Vincenzo Montella‘s side have lost to France, Italy and Belgium, conceding eight goals while scoring only once in the competition.

Another defeat would leave them with a huge amount of ground to make up in the battle to avoid relegation from League A. The Crescent-Stars will also be without some major attacking talent, with Arda Guler and Baris Alper Yilmaz suspended, while Hakan Calhanoglu and Kenan Yildiz have been dealing with injuries.

Match Preview: What’s at stake?

Turkiye and Italy meet in League A, Group A1 of the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League, one of the competition’s most demanding sections. France and Belgium complete the four-team group, meaning every result carries weight in the race for the top two places. The September 28 game is Matchday 2 for both sides, coming just three days after Turkiye hosts France and Italy faces Belgium.

For Italy, the game is part of a major rebuilding project under Roberto Mancini, who has returned as head coach after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mancini selected a 34-player squad for the September and October fixtures, including nine players receiving their first senior Italy call-up.

The group features a mixture of established names such as Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella and Sandro Tonali and younger players being evaluated during the new cycle.

Turkiye, meanwhile, are coming off their return to the World Cup in 2026 after ending a 24-year absence from the tournament. Vincenzo Montella remains in charge and selected a 29-player squad for the Nations League fixtures, although Hakan Calhanoglu and Kenan Yıldız are unavailable because of injuries. That leaves Turkiye without two of their most prominent midfield and attacking options for the September window.

Until his departure, Mbappe had served as France’s primary catalyst against a stubborn Turkish defense that had kept Les Bleus contained. His 54th-minute finish finally broke the deadlock in what had been a tightly contested, defensive battle.

Uncertainty now looms over the superstar forward, who left the pitch in visible discomfort. With three key international fixtures remaining in this window, France will hold its breath as medical staff evaluate the severity of Mbappe’s injury.

Meanwhile, Turkiye got off to a sluggish start in League A of the 2026–28 UEFA Nations League cycle. Though the hosts pushed aggressively in the second half, French goalkeeper Mike Maignan delivered a sensational performance between the posts to keep them at bay.

Mbappe extends his legacy in France

With his strike against Turkiye, Mbappe padded his ledger as Les Bleus’ all-time top scorer, bringing his total to 67 goals in 107 international appearances. The finish further cements his historic record atop the French national team’s scoring charts.

The goal also brought Mbappe to 10 career UEFA Nations League tallies, pulling him level with Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres. However, he still trails Norway’s Erling Haaland, who leads the competition’s all-time charts with an astounding 21 goals in 17 matches.

While Mbappe continues to shine internationally, his workload remains a point of emphasis for Real Madrid. With Los Blancos sitting on 16 points through seven matches, Madrid will need their marquee superstar at full strength ahead of a grueling stretch across LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League.

Key takeaways

• Kylian Mbappe exited in the 58th minute following an apparent right leg injury.
• Goalkeeper Mike Maignan delivered a sensational performance to keep Turkiye at bay.
• France’s captain brought his record scoring total to 67 goals in 107 appearances.

Neither Calhanoglu nor Yildiz will feature for Turkiye against France after injury issues kept them out of head coach Vincenzo Montella’s squad for this international window entirely.

On one hand, Calhanoglu was sidelined after picking up a muscle injury during club duty ahead of the break. On the other, Yildiz suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal in his left foot during Juventus’ Serie A opener against Frosinone.

With how to watch and start time in the US confirmed for Turkiye vs France in the UEFA Nations League, both sides are looking to kick off Group A1 on the right foot in a high-stakes group that also features European powerhouses Italy and Belgium.

Turkiye’s predicted lineup without Calhanoglu and Yildiz

Along with Calhanoglu and Yildiz, Turkiye will also be without defender Mert Muldur, who remains out with an injury. Here is how Montella’s side is expected to line up against France:

• Goalkeeper: Ugurcan Cakir
• Defenders: Zeki Celik (RB), Merih Demiral (CB), Abdulkerim Bardakci (CB), Ferdi Kadioglu (LB)
• Midfielders: Ismail Yuksek, Salih Ozcan, Arda Guler (CAM), Kerem Akturkoglu (LW), Yunus Akgun (RW)
• Forward: Baris Alper Yilmaz (ST)

With Real Madrid playmaker Guler pulling the strings in midfield, Turkiye aims to pull off a home statement victory over France before turning its focus to a Matchday 2 fixture against Italy.

Key takeaways

• Turkiye will open its 2026–28 UEFA Nations League campaign without two key figures.
• Kenan Yildiz was ruled out after fracturing a metatarsal during Juventus’ Serie A opener.
• Vincenzo Montella will rely on playmaker Arda Guler to lead Turkiye’s midfield setup.

“It was a foul, and we were talking about whether it was a foul or not, and I told the Turkish player that it wasn’t a foul,” Almiron revealed to VS Sports. “I told him in English, he understood me, but you could tell he was paying close attention. Credit to him too, because he wanted to take advantage of it, and in the end, it’s a rule where I still accept my mistake and all that.“

Almiron added that covering one’s mouth had long been a routine habit among players, but the implementation of the new law changed everything. Fortunately for Almiron and Paraguay, La Albirroja held on for the win and eventually advanced to the Round of 32, where they pulled off a dramatic victory over Germany.

That red card wasn’t Paraguay’s only brush with controversy at the 2026 tournament. Tensions boiled over following their Round of 16 elimination, culminating in a heated confrontation involving French star Kylian Mbappe and Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Almiron’s comments on what the player said to the referee

Paraguay’s playmaker also shed light on Muldur’s post-match statements, pointing out that the defender capitalized on the technicality rather than claiming any offensive language was used.

“The player goes and makes a statement too, and in his statement he doesn’t say that I said anything to him, just that it was the gesture,“ Almiron noted regarding the Turkish full-back.

Despite his status as Paraguay’s focal point, Almiron struggled to find his top form in the tournament, completing just 73% of his passes and placing only three shots on target without finding the back of the net. With their World Cup campaign over, Paraguay now turn their focus to the 2028 Copa America.

Ghorbal has refereed just 21 matches in his career, but he was part of the 2022 World Cup crew. In the current 2026 edition, he handled the Scotland-Haiti match, where he handed out four yellow cards in a game disrupted by 44 fouls.

This game offers a rematch of a June 2025 international friendly where Turkiye edged the United States 2-1, a game that saw early goals from Arda Guler and Kerem Akturkoglu before a late physical battle unfolded. Ghorbal will be wearing turqouise today as the USA and Turkiye uniforms are also set.

Mustapha Ghorbal stats ahead of the game

His stats show an official who isn’t afraid to blow the whistle to protect players, but he typically avoids premature red cards, preferring to establish boundaries early using verbal warnings and targeted cautions.

Overall, Ghorbal averages 3.05 yellow cards and 0.1 red cards per match. He is the type of referee who refuses to let violence escalate on the pitch, and he is expected to run a tight ship with both Turkish and American players.

Tactical impact: fighting for control

The USMNT will need to maintain defensive discipline, particularly given their tendency to drop into a tighter, heavy-fouling shape when under pressure. During their previous friendly against Turkyie, late-match frustration resulted in quick yellow cards as they struggled to slow down Turkey’s dynamic counter-attack.

The match will be played in Los Angeles, which has a World Cup capacity of approximately 70,000 spectators, meaning another near-capacity crowd is expected for the host nation’s final group-stage appearance.

Even without direct qualification stakes, the fixture still draws attention for different reasons. For the United States, they have an opportunity to maintain their high level of performance in front of home supporters, while Turkiye look to salvage pride and finally showcase the attacking talent that has yet to fully emerge in the tournament.

How have Turkiye performed so far?

Türkiye arrived at the World Cup with high expectations but have struggled to deliver in Group D. The team opened with a 2-0 defeat to Australia, followed by a narrow 1-0 loss against Paraguay, results that confirmed their early elimination from the competition.

How are the United States approaching the match?

The United States now sit 14th in the FIFA World Rankings after securing six points from two matches, including a 4-1 victory over Paraguay and a 2-0 win against Australia. Mauricio Pochettino’s side has already confirmed top position in Group D and qualification to the Round of 32.

With progression secured, the United States will rotate their starting lineup. Christian Pulisic has been confirmed to start on the bench due to a tactical decision, Even with changes, the United States aim to maintain their strong momentum heading into the knockout stage.

In fact, as the USA take on Turkiye, ranked No. 32 in the FIFA World Rankings, the final score will have absolutely no bearing on the final standings. Regardless of whether Mauricio Pochettino’s side win, tie, or lose, the Stars and Stripes will finish atop the group table and advance at the 2026 World Cup. In fact, because of the Group F final standings, the USA already found out it will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32.

While the USMNT’s showdown against Turkiye has virtually nothing on the line—the U.S. are guaranteed to finish first and the Turks are already eliminated—the Americans are still hoping for a win to complete a perfect group stage.

What happens if USA win vs. Turkiye?

The United States will close out the group stage of the 2026 World Cup in perfect, unbeaten fashion with a triumph over Turkiye in Los Angeles. Moreover, they would send a message to the rest of the tournament by becoming the second team to go three-for-three and amass nine points in the first round. For the time being, only Mexico have accomplished such a feat.

Of course, those points will have no effect once the knockout stage gets underway, but they will certainly build confidence for the co-host nation, who are guaranteed to play every game on home soil—a benefit neither Mexico nor Canada will enjoy.

As for the Crescent Stars, they would complete an abysmal tournament by finishing dead last in the table with no points and three straight losses. However, Turkiye are guaranteed to finish last regardless of how they fare against the USMNT.

What happens if USA and Turkiye tie?

If the game between USA and Turkiye ends in a stalemate, the Stars and Stripes will finish first in Group D with seven points out of the nine possible. The USMNT would still finish the group stage undefeated, but it may come at a cost momentum-wise.

As for Turkiye, everything would stay the same. They would finish in last place, and a draw against an American side resting its starters — Christian Pulisic isn’t starting today — would be nothing for the Crescent Stars to go out and paint the town red about.

What happens if USA lose vs. Turkiye?

In the event the USA fall to Turkiye, they will see their unbeaten run come to an end at the 2026 World Cup. Many may argue it could be a perfectly timed wake-up call for the Stars and Stripes. Pochettino’s team would still finish atop its group with six points—the U.S. hold the tiebreaking advantage over both Australia and Paraguay.

A loss could serve as a reminder for the USMNT not to rest on its laurels. It may turn out to be a rendition of Paul Revere’s midnight ride, warning the USA about the battles to come in the 2026 World Cup knockout stage.

As for Turkiye, a win would be a slight bright spot to end the tournament on, but nothing to go back to Anatolia and tell stories about. Turkiye would still finish dead last in Group D, even if they end level on points with either Australia or Paraguay, because both countries prevailed in the head-to-head matchups against the Crescent Stars.

The Stars and Stripes put the tournament on notice with a dominant 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay before blanking Australia 2-0. Those consecutive masterclasses catapulted the Americans to first place in the group with six points, putting them in prime position to cap off opening-round play with a flawless 3-0-0 record and a massive goal differential.

Meanwhile, Turkiye have been one of the tournament’s most glaring disappointments despite a roster boasting elite European talent like Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu. Sitting at the bottom of the group with zero points, the Turkish side will play strictly for pride as they look to finish their disappointing World Cup run with a statement performance.

USA’s FIFA ranking

Riding the momentum of back-to-back group-stage victories, the United States has climbed three spots in the live FIFA World Rankings, jumping from 17th at the start of the tournament to 14th.

The Americans picked up a massive 38.36 ranking points courtesy of their triumphs over Paraguay and Australia, pushing their total to 1,709.59. This surge places the current squad on the precipice of one of the highest rankings in USMNT history, rapidly approaching a return to the global top 10.

Best position reached by USA in the FIFA ranking

The high-water mark for the USMNT in the official world rankings came exactly two decades ago. In the spring of 2006, a golden generation led by Landon Donovan peaked at a historic No. 4 in the world, cementing their status as the undisputed heavyweight of CONCACAF ahead of that year’s tournament in Germany.

The program’s most recent foray into elite territory came in 2021, when a trophy-laden summer pushed the Americans to 10th globally. With the knockout rounds looming, this current squad has every opportunity to keep scaling the ladder as the stakes intensify on home soil.

The first-world venue is expected to welcome a hyped-up crowd close to its full capacity of approximately 72,000 spectators for USA vs Turkiye. The Los Angeles Stadium cost a staggering $5.5 billion to build, so it’s one of the most elite, modern venues in the World Cup.

Temperature will be about 68°F (20°C) around kick-off time, dropping to 65°F (18°C) by the end of the match. Hence, the mood is set perfectly for a great night of World Cup action between the USMNT and Turkiye.

What will the weather be like for Turkiye vs USA today?

Weather is expected to be pleasant at Inglewood, but the fact is SoFi Stadium does not have a traditional, fully enclosed retractable roof. Instead, it features a massive, translucent canopy with massive built-in adjustable openings that slide like car sunroofs to control wind flow. Hence, outside weather is very controlled.

What is at stake for Turkiye and USMNT in Group D?

The USMNT has already secured its first-place spot due to its wins vs. Paraguay and Australia. Meanwhile, Turkiye, who will play with a full white uniform vs. USA has already bought the tickets back home, as two defeats against USMNT’s same opponents already made it impossible for the Ottomans to qualify to the next round of the 2026 World Cup.
