Azzi Fudd has emerged at UConn as one of college basketball’s brightest talents, blending effortless scoring with fierce determination. Her rise hasn’t been smooth—on the contrary, it’s been shaped by real tests that define her resilience.

Born into a family steeped in hoops, her roots run deep. Her journey reflects both the highs of standout performances and the lows of injuries that threatened her momentum. Through each setback, she’s refused to let it define her narrative.

Standing on the edge of her final collegiate season, she steps into leadership for the Huskies. This chapter isn’t just about her points or rebounds, it’s about a young athlete forging her legacy, readying herself for whatever comes next.

How old is Azzi Fudd?

Azzi Jazlyn Fudd was born on November 11, 2002, making her 22 years old as of April 2025. Still early in her adult life, she’s already a graduate student at UConn, blending academic progress with athletic ambitions.

Azzi Fudd speaks to the media during a press conference after beating the South Carolina Gamecocks to win the National Championship of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2025. (Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

How tall is Azzi Fudd?

Standing at 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m), Azzi Fudd strikes a balance between guard agility and wing versatility. That size allows her deadly perimeter shooting and the ability to defend multiple positions—a rare blend that’s become her trademark.

Azzi Fudd’s family and love life

Azzi Fudd didn’t just discover basketball—she was born into it. Her mother, Katie Smrcka-Duffy, played college ball at NC State and Georgetown before being drafted by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 2001 WNBA Draft.

Her father, Tim Fudd, also played at the collegiate level, suiting up for American University. Both parents brought a competitive spirit and deep love for the game that would shape Azzi’s future from a young age.

What makes her story even more compelling is the bond within her family. In 2011, her parents adopted two boys, Jon and Jose, adding to her already tight-knit household. She also has an older brother named Thomas.

Azzi Fudd attempts a free throw in the third quarter against the South Carolina Gamecocks in the National Championship of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. (Source: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

While she keeps much of her personal life private, she has been linked to fellow UConn star Paige Bueckers, with whom she shares not only the backcourt but also a close friendship that has drawn speculation and admiration from fans.

Azzi Fudd’s injury

Injuries have been a recurring chapter in Azzi Fudd’s otherwise stellar journey. Her first major setback came in 2019, when she tore her ACL and MCL during a USA Basketball 3×3 event, a devastating injury for any athlete—especially one in high school with national attention.

She underwent surgery and missed the entire summer circuit but returned to dominate her senior year at St. John’s College High School in D.C. Her injury woes didn’t stop there. During her freshman season at UConn, she missed several games with a foot injury.

And in November 2023, just before her junior season, she suffered another torn ACL and meniscus in her right knee during practice—another crushing blow. It sidelined her for the entire 2023–24 campaign, forcing her to watch from the bench while her team pushed on without her.

Through it all, she showed not just physical resilience, but mental strength. She spent months in rehab, leaning on her family, teammates and coaching staff. Her return in 2024 marked a turning point—not only was she back, but she played with renewed intensity and maturity.

Azzi Fudd’s career highlights

No. 1 recruit in the nation (2021): She was ranked the No. 1 high school player in the country by ESPN coming out of St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. She was the first sophomore ever to win the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award in 2019—an honor usually reserved for seniors.

Gatorade National Player of the Year (2019): At just 16, she became the youngest player to receive the award, which recognizes not just athletic excellence, but academic achievement and character. It was a signal to the basketball world that a generational talent was emerging.

McDonald’s All-American & Jordan Brand Classic selection (2021): Despite recovering from ACL/MCL surgery, she returned to play her senior year and earned All-American status. Her presence in elite showcases confirmed she hadn’t lost a step and remained one of the most hyped recruits in years.

College debut with UConn (2021–22): In her freshman season, she averaged 12.1 points per game and shot 42.6% from three. Her efficient scoring and poised decision-making made an immediate impact on a stacked UConn roster, helping the team reach the Final Four.

Career-high 32 points vs. Texas (Nov 2022): She put up 32 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in a top-10 showdown early in her sophomore season. It was a breakout moment, proving she could dominate on the biggest stage—even against elite competition.

Injuries and comebacks (2022–2024): Her sophomore and junior years were marred by injuries, including a foot injury and a devastating torn ACL and meniscus. Despite those setbacks, she returned stronger, redefining her game and showing mental toughness beyond her years.

Senior resurgence & All-Big East honors (2024–25): In her senior season, she averaged 13.6 PPG, shot over 40% from deep, and led UConn to a dominant run in the Big East. Her leadership on and off the court earned her All-Big East First Team honors and solidified her role as a veteran leader.

NCAA Champion & Final Four Most Outstanding Player (2025): She peaked when it mattered most—March Madness. Her performances in the Elite Eight and Final Four lifted UConn to the national title, earning her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award. It was the perfect climax to a long-awaited redemption arc.

Returning for a fifth year (2025–26): Instead of heading straight to the WNBA Draft, she opted to return to UConn for a fifth season, citing unfinished business and a desire to continue growing. The decision was widely praised and underscored her loyalty to the program.

UConn star Azzi Fudd will have to meet some major expectations next season.
Azzi Fudd is walking on clouds right now. She was instrumental in leading the UConn Huskies to their first national championship in quite a while, even posting the best numbers in the title game.

Now, with Paige Bueckers gone to the WNBA and the Dallas Wings, she and Sarah Strong will be in charge of leading Geno Auriemma’s program back to the mountaintop.

Notably, this will also be her final season in college. With that in mind, ESPN ranked her as the second-best prospect to enter the WNBA in 2026, which seemed a little off.

Paige Bueckers gets No. 2 ranking from ESPN

“Fudd was the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after totaling 43 points on 55.2% shooting in UConn’s victories over UCLA and South Carolina to win the NCAA title in Tampa. Injuries are the only thing that have held back Fudd, but she’s coming off a healthy season,“ read the ranking.

It makes sense that UCLA center Lauren Betts gets the nod as the top selection. Then again, as good as Fudd is, having her ahead of the likes of Ta’Niya Latson or Olivia Miles seems like a bit of a reach.

Few names in college basketball carry as much weight as Geno Auriemma. The legendary UConn Huskies coach has built an empire of wins, titles and prestige, transforming women’s basketball in the process.

With decades of dominance on the court, his legacy is secured—but beyond the trophies and headlines lies another compelling figure: his net worth. The numbers behind the success story are as fascinating as his playbook.

As coaching salaries soar and endorsement deals expand, his fortune reflects more than just game-time decisions. What does a life of basketball greatness really earn someone in today’s sports economy?

What is Geno Auriemma’s net worth?

As of 2025, Geno Auriemma‘s estimated net worth stands at approximately $18 million, according to Marca. This substantial figure is a reflection of his unparalleled success and influence in women’s college basketball.

Geno Auriemma speaks to the media during a press conference after beating the South Carolina Gamecocks to win the National Championship of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. (Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

What is Geno Auriemma’s salary?

In June 2024, Auriemma secured a five-year contract extension with the University of Connecticut, valued at $18.7 million, extending his tenure through 2029. The contract comprises a base salary of $400,000 per year.

It is supplemented with an additional compensation of $2.94 million for the 2024–25 season for speaking engagements, consulting, and media obligations, with an annual increase of $200,000 thereafter.

This compensation package not only reflects Auriemma’s exceptional coaching achievements but also the multifaceted contributions he makes to the university and the sport at large.

He also receives bonuses for athletic achievements. For example, in the 2023-24 season, he accumulated over $312,000 in incentives for winning the regular season and the Big East tournament, being named Conference Coach of the Year, and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Final Four.

Geno Auriemma’s career: From humble beginnings to coaching royalty

Geno Auriemma’s journey to becoming a coaching legend began in Montella, Italy, where he was born in 1954. At the age of seven, he emigrated with his family to Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Geno Auriemma celebrates with the net after beating the South Carolina Gamecocks 82-59 to win the National Championship of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
He attended Montgomery County Community College before transferring to West Chester University, where he played basketball and graduated in 1977. His coaching career commenced in 1977 as an assistant coach at Bishop McDevitt High School in Pennsylvania.

He later served as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s University and Bishop Kenrick High School before joining the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball team in 1981. In 1985, he was appointed head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team.

Under his leadership, UConn has transformed into a powerhouse in women’s college basketball. He has led the team to 12 NCAA Division I championships, 23 Final Four appearances, and 24 conference titles.

Beyond his collegiate achievements, he has made significant contributions to the sport on a national level. He served as the head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Basketball Team from 2009 to 2016, leading them to multiple international titles.

WNBA legend Maya Moore gushed about her program's latest accomplishment.
For the first time in nine years, Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies are national champions again. That was an epic farewell for program legend Paige Bueckers.

Multiple former Huskies stars were in attendance to watch the game, including WNBA legend Maya Moore, who was recently announced as a member of the Hall of Fame class of 2025.

Following the Huskie’s 16th consecutive win and 27th in 28 games, the Minnesota Lynx legend gushed about the team and how hard they worked to achieve this milestone.

Maya Moore reacts to UConn’s championship

“It was awesome to see,” Moore said. “Just knowing how hard they’ve worked and the adversity they’ve overcome, watching them play the way they did at this time of the year I just feel so good for them. Paige was present in the moment as was Azzi, Sarah (Strong), all of them really. It was a team effort with everyone playing their role together. It was seamless and I was so happy for them. That’s all you want.”

Paige Bueckers just broke Moore’s record to become the program’s all-time leader in points per game (19.83). However, records are meant to be broken, and Moore has always been supportive of the new generation.

The UConn Huskies were too much for Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks and were crowned the new champions of the NCAA Tournament. Check out here the funniest memes and reactions.
The NCAAB has a new champion, and it’s the UConn Huskies, who showed no mercy against Dawn Staley‘s team, the South Carolina Gamecocks. Led by Geno Auriemma, they were too much for their rivals, dominating from start to finish in March Madness.

With an impressive performance from Sarah Strong and the ever-present Paige Bueckers, the Huskies crushed the Gamecocks, thus crowning themselves as the new champions in women’s College Basketball.

For their part, the team coached by Staley could do little and was always playing catch-up throughout the game, unable to find a solution. Unfortunately for South Carolina, their hopes of winning the title were dashed in the decisive game and of course, social media went wild, with users sharing hilarious memes.

Paige Bueckers and Geno Auriemma are confident in putting up a great performance and claiming the National Championship for the UConn Huskies.
The UConn Huskies are facing a unique opportunity to crown themselves as the best in the NCAA, but to do so, they must defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks in the National Championship Game. Geno Auriemma trusts Paige Bueckers‘ talent to secure the victory, and believes they truly deserve this title.

In recent comments on Sirius XM, the experienced coach revealed all that the talented player has invested in this team, considering it one of the main reasons why the Huskies deserve to be crowned champions.

“The goal of every kid I think that comes to UConn is ‘I want to walk off the court with the last game of my senior year being in a national championship game, and we win that game.’ That’s not realistic, but it’s a great goal to have,” Auriemma started. “And I think all the players like Paige who have been in Paige’s shoes, have had their own personal journey to get to this point, and they’ve invested a lot of themselves every day.”

“And Paige has invested as much, if not more, of her personal self into our program and into her game and into the community than anyone that we’ve had,” the HC continued. “So she deserves something like this. The only problem is that so do some of the South Carolina kids. But, yeah, it’d be the bittersweet if Paige, wins this national championship at UConn, that’s one less thing I can annoy her about.”

The historic chance for the Huskies

The UConn Huskies have proven to be one of the most solid teams throughout the season, and they will look to crown it in the final game, where they will face none other than the South Carolina Gamecocks, another tough opponent.

Geno Auriemma is the mastermind behind this winning team, and he was outspoken when reflecting on his players’ dominant performance in Tampa against UCLA: “I don’t think we made a mistake the entire evening, especially on the defensive end,” Huskies coach said.

The press conference had a moment of laughter when, in response to UConn’s coach’s blunt reflection, star player Bueckers interjected, admitting that they hadn’t even seen a replay of the game yet: “I mean, we haven’t watched film yet.”

“We never get complacent with our performance,” Fudd said to the press. “We’ll wake up tomorrow, it’s a new day, a new scout.” On April 6th, also in Tampa, the Huskies and Gamecocks will face off to finally determine who will be the new champions of the NCAAB.

After the thrilling victory of the Florida Gators over the reigning two-time champions UConn Huskies, HC Todd Golden shared his perspective on what he believed was the key to the game.
College Basketball is facing one of its most important events of the year, and the teams are definitely not disappointing. Todd Golden‘s Florida Gators made it clear why they don’t want to be just supporting players, as they eliminated the UConn Huskies in a thrilling game.

After the game, where the Gators ultimately defeated the defending two-time champions 77-75, Coach Golden spoke with the press. Pleased with the final result, he provided a brief analysis, clearly outlining what he believed was the key to the victory.

“We just stayed the course. Obviously it didn’t go our way for a large portion of that game after a good start,” Golden said. “Our team is tough. We have great senior leadership, we just wanted to continue to be ourselves and do it a little bit better, and in the last six minutes of the game we did that very well.”

Led by Walter Clayton Jr.’s 23 points, the Gators pushed a great team like Dan Hurley’s to their limits. Huskies fought hard until the very end, but ultimately, they were left empty-handed.

Golden expressed his admiration for Clayton Jr.

While the Florida team displayed great collective effort and had several standout moments throughout the game, it’s worth highlighting Clayton Jr.’s performance, as he ended up being one of the key figures of the matchup.

If there’s anyone within the program who couldn’t stop praising his star player, it’s Coach Golden. Once the Gators secured their spot in the next round, he shared his thoughts on the performance of the senior point guard.

“Incredible leader, great player, teammates believe in him,” the HC said. “Great to have the ball in his hands when you need somebody to step up and make a big shot. His teammates stepped up for him today, helped us get this win, and he stepped up closing this victory out for us.”

What’s next for the Gators?

March Madness has been a tournament complicated for the Gators in recent years, but at this stage of the competition, they’ve already surpassed their performance from last year, when they were eliminated in the first round.

After their victorious debut in the NCAA Tournament, UConn Huskies HC Dan Hurley was emphatic when referring to his team and the lack of recognition.
One of the teams undoubtedly focused on winning is the UConn Huskies, who already know what it feels like to be crowned champions in the NCAA Tournament. Despite this, head coach Dan Hurley revealed after the debut that his team isn’t given the recognition it deserves, leading him to make some strong statements on the matter.

After securing a hard-fought victory over No. 9 seed Oklahoma, 67-59, and advancing to the next round of March Madness, the experienced head coach took some time to speak with the press and reflect on his team’s lack of validation for their achievements in recent years in the league.

“The last two years are not, you know, there’s only three teams that have done what we’ve done,” Hurley said after the UConn win. “The only three teams that have been able to do that since the tournament expanded are us Duke and Florida. … There’s a lot of honor in us being able to face the last team that went back-to-back. There’s honor in fighting and getting to the Round of 32 and making somebody put you down in this tournament to end this run we’ve been on.

“If it wasn’t for all of my antics and viral moments, obviously there’d be more focus on just what we’ve accomplished as a program [at UConn ] the last three years. It’s been an amazing run, one of the best runs anyone’s had.”

The recent achievements of the Huskies

Dan Hurley’s harsh words toward the rest of the league specifically refer to his team’s recent achievements, as they managed to claim the title in the last two editions of the NCAA Tournament.

In recent hours, Ty Chan announced his departure from the program, as he has now committed to the UConn Huskies. The offensive tackle appeared in 14 games over the past two seasons under the leadership of Marcus Freeman.

The news was confirmed by the player himself, who, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account @chansanity5, shared an optimistic message about what’s ahead for his College Football career: “Grateful for this opportunity!”

Chan, who was rated as one of the top 15 offensive tackles in the country by 247Sports and Rivals, joins the Huskies after one of the best campaigns in the FBS for Jim Mora’s team. UConn finished with a 9-4 record and secured a win in the Fenway Bowl against North Carolina.

A veteran Notre Dame player departs from the program

In addition to the news of Ty Chan heading to UConn, another player has decided to seek new opportunities through the Transfer Portal. Freeman, who is working to shape his roster for the upcoming season, will be without one of his veterans on the offensive line.

Jayden Thomas, a talented wide receiver with plenty of experience in the league, will be heading to the ACC for his final year of eligibility as he enrolls and plays at Virginia.

In his final season as an Irish, Thomas managed to score two touchdowns, one of which came in the recent playoffs against Indiana.

Al Golden’s heartfelt message to Freeman after his departure to the NFL

After finishing his participation in the National Championship Game, which ended in defeat for Notre Dame, Al Golden became the top candidate to become the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL. Soon after, the rumors turned into reality.
