Former Miami Heat star Udonis Haslem recently unveiled a surprising detail about his illustrious career, shedding light on a poignant moment tied to his retirement from the NBA.
The Miami Heat are generating significant buzz at the start of the regular season. With an impressive 4-0 record, the fan base is already dreaming of a championship, drawing parallels to their previous title-winning season when they achieved a similar start. This success has also sparked fond memories of the time when Udonis Haslem, a three-time champion with the Heat, was part of the team.

Now serving as an analyst for NBA broadcasts on Prime Video, Haslem recently shared a surprising revelation about the moment he realized it was time to consider retirement. “I had a ‘I need to retire’ moment seven years before I finally did retire,” Haslem admitted.

Haslem elaborated on what led to his reflections on retirement, stating, “It was around the time we acquired Hassan Whiteside. I thought, ‘No way is he taking my minutes.’ I didn’t realize he could grab the rim while keeping his feet on the ground,” he recounted.

He continued: “I could not get a rebound over this guy. When I saw that, I thought, ‘It’s time for me to go.’” Haslem’s candid comments surprised fans, as they hinted that if he had retired earlier, his legacy with the Heat might have taken a different turn.

Haslem’s impact on the Heat

Despite contemplating retirement seven years earlier, Haslem had already cemented his legacy with the team, having won three championships alongside legends like LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.

During his tenure with the Heat, Haslem averaged 7.5 points over 879 regular-season games and made 12 playoff appearances in a remarkable 20-year career with the franchise.

As Haslem concluded his storied career with the Heat, his legacy was firmly established, a testament to his enduring impact in the NBA. His journey underscores the challenges faced by players in maintaining a position in a highly competitive league, where circumstances can change rapidly.

The Los Angeles Lakers are counting on the talent of Luka Doncic to succeed in the NBA Playoffs, but a three-time NBA champion believes the Slovenian guard needs to get better.
Luka Doncic has showcased his immense talent in the two months since joining the Los Angeles Lakers. That surge in performance has raised expectations around the team heading into the postseason. Still, a three-time NBA champion believes the Slovenian guard must improve a key area of his game.

“Luka going to have to guard somebody. At least try, that’s all I’m saying,” Udonis Haslem explained on The OGs Podcast with Mike Miller. “I’m looking at all the teams that are in the West, that are ahead of the Lakers, and I’m saying, ‘He’s gonna have to guard.’”

Udonis spoke about Doncic’s tendencies that make him less inclined to exert effort on defense. “We all understand that guys are too good offensively… Nobody’s really shutting nobody down by themselves no more. But outside of that, nobody shut nobody down, you know what I’m saying?” he added. “So it’s five guys on the string. Push him to your help. You got to try, bro.”

Haslem’s comments came just as Lakers coach JJ Redick revealed what Luka believes is his greatest strength. “He thinks there’s not a person in the world who can guard him,” Redick said recently. That confidence reflects the guard’s elite creative skill, but it also points to a lack of focus on the other side of the floor.

Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem

The Lakers will face a serious test in the playoffs

There’s no question Luka Doncic has improved the Lakers since his arrival in early February. With him, the team climbed the Western Conference standings and secured a valuable third-place finish. However, the intensity of postseason basketball is a different challenge entirely and, with the NBA playoff picture ahead, Udonis Haslem believes opponents will expose the Slovenian guard’s defensive liabilities.

“I’m looking at the teams that are ahead of you—there’s nowhere to hide,” said the three-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat. “I tell you, if you play OKC, he’s not going to hide. You think Lu Dort and Cason Wallace, and Wiggins going to let him off the hook just because they’re not the focal points of the offense? No. They’re going to put his (expletive) in action. He’s going to have to guard.”

Haslem also broke down potential matchups with other Western Conference contenders. “If he goes against Houston, you think those guys are going to let him off the hook with all them young Thundercats over there? He’s going to have to (expletive) guard,” Udonis added. “If you put him against Denver, you going to put him on Michael Porter Jr.? Where you gonna put him?”

The Lakers face tough opening test against Minnesota

The first hurdle for the Los Angeles Lakers will be the Minnesota Timberwolves. After finishing sixth in the West, they’ll look to pull off an upset and advance to the semifinals. As for defensive concerns, JJ Redick and Jarred Vanderbilt both addressed Anthony Edwards and the special attention he’ll require.

“The thing that jumps out at you is just the three-point volume… Not many guys that can shoot off the dribble at that volume from three, can also make 40% of them,” said the coach. “He’s a great offensive player, man,” added Vanderbilt, who shared what the Lakers need to do to slow him down: “Just continue to just make it tough for him. He can get going quick, so just not to get anything easy for him.”

Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem has warned the Golden State Warriors about two potential first-round playoff opponents who could jeopardize their postseason aspirations.
The Golden State Warriors have found new life following the midseason addition of Jimmy Butler, turning around what had been a lackluster first half of the season. Now sitting in sixth place in the standings, the Warriors are in a solid position to secure a spot in the NBA playoffs. However, Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem issued a cautionary warning about two teams that could potentially knock the Warriors out in the first round.

The Heat’s all-time leading rebounder explained that the Warriors must avoid facing the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Houston Rockets early in the postseason, as both teams have the tools to eliminate them.

“Neither [Oklahoma or Houston] in the first round is gonna play out well for Golden State,” Haslem said on ESPN’s NBA Today. “But [Thunder] has wing defenders. They have Alex Caruso; they have Luguentz Dort. They have these lengthy, long wing defender guys”.

“And Houston [Rockets] have that as well,” Haslem added. “So, neither one of those teams in the first round is going to play out well for Golden State. So, in my opinion, move up as high as you can and get out of there”.

Dillon Brooks #9 of the Houston Rockets works against Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors during the first half at Toyota Center.
Haslem highlights Jimmy Butler’s weakness

Before the Warriors’ bounce-back win over the Bucks, they suffered a loss to the Nuggets, who were missing their star, Nikola Jokic. During that game, Haslem pointed out a specific weakness in Jimmy Butler’s game against certain player profiles like Aaron Gordon and Russell Westbrook.

“When you talk about Aaron Gordon and Russell Westbrook, you’re talking about guys that have size, speed, and athleticism,” Haslem noted. “Those are the kinds of guys Jimmy struggles with”.

“Smaller guards he can overpower, bigger guys he can usually get around,” he continued. “Those guys that have that balance of both, those teams are ones Jimmy struggles with. Guys with switchable matchups that can guard him on the post and the perimeter”.

Curry believes Butler could deliver a championship

Speaking on 95.7 The Game’s Steiny & Guru, Stephen Curry expressed confidence in the Warriors’ championship potential following the addition of Butler. “We can win it [the NBA title]. Absolutely. That’s why we’re juiced to be in this position,” Curry said.

“We have plenty of experience on our side, a good balance of veteran presence and youthful energy,” he continued. “Butler’s trade brought balance to our team, defined our roles, and solidified our rotation from night to night”.

A while back, NBA legend Udonis Haslem shared a surprising opinion on the role he envisioned for Tyler Herro within the Miami Heat. Now, the guard has revealed his feelings about Haslem’s comments and shared insight into their relationship.
At 24, Tyler Herro is firmly established as a crucial part of head coach Erik Spoelstra’s plans for the Miami Heat. Entering his sixth NBA season, Herro now plays a leading role, consistently delivering strong performances. However, Udonis Haslem’s remarks about the guard stirred up some controversy.

“Tyler’s role for us, and the best role for him, is to probably be a sixth man,” Haslem stated during an interview with NBA Today in May, a comment that raised eyebrows given his position as Miami’s Vice President of Basketball Development.

Reflecting on that statement in a recent interview with the Miami Herald, Herro shared that he addressed the matter with Haslem. “It was a friendly conversation. I told him my concerns about why I didn’t think he should have said that,” Herro explained, signaling his discomfort with Haslem’s opinion.

Haslem, however, defended his viewpoint. “He explained why he thought he should have said that,” Herro recounted. Despite the disagreement, he clarified that their bond remains strong: “At the end of the day, it’s basketball… Our relationship is bigger than basketball.”

Udonis Haslem #40 of the Miami Heat reacts in the first half against the Boston Celtics in Game Six of the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2012 NBA Playoffs on June 7, 2012 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Herro closed the topic on a conciliatory note, saying, “If he thinks I should start, that’s cool. If he thinks I should come off the bench, that’s his opinion. Everyone has their own. It’s cool. It’s really no big deal.”

Haslem’s remarks draw Pat Riley’s attention

While Herro seemed willing to downplay Haslem’s words, the comments drew a strong response from Pat Riley. The Heat president, who coached Haslem during his playing days, expressed disapproval over the public nature of Haslem’s opinion.

“He probably should have kept that to himself,” Riley commented, adding, “What Udonis has to understand is he works for the Heat… We have one voice and that voice is all of our voice. But one guy is going to distribute that information and that’s Erik (Spoelstra).”

Spoelstra’s stance is clear

In the debate over Tyler Herro’s role, opinions may vary, but ultimately, the decision rests with head coach Erik Spoelstra. So far in the 2024-25 season, Spoelstra’s stance is evident: Herro has started all three games for the Heat, logging an average of 31.6 minutes per game and delivering impressive stats with 18.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

With the NBA 2024-25 season just around the corner, a Miami Heat legend compared Bronny James, LeBron James' son, with a multiple NBA champion.
High expectations were set the moment Bronny James was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft. As the 55th pick, fans are eager to see him make history alongside his father, LeBron James.
Former Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem highlighted Bronny’s work so far, comparing him to Jrue Holiday. “He’s done a great job of just quieting the noise & focusing on the things he can control. When he speaks, he talks about being a Jrue Holiday type of guy. He can come in, and make an impact like that, ” Haslem said in The OGs Show YouTube channel.

Despite the criticism of his performance during the NBA Summer League, the truth is that Bronny shows promising qualities. At just 19 years old, he shows an athletic yet durable build, making him a challenge for smaller guards while also allowing him to navigate around slimmer, shiftier players.

Holiday’s similarities with Bronny

The three-time NBA winner with Miami Heat may have done a spot-on comparison. A lot of the best guards in the NBA referred to Jrue Holiday as the hardest defender in the league, while also having an amazing work rate without the ball, turning him in one of the best point guards.

Holiday didn’t truly hit his stride until his fourth season, when he earned a spot on the NBA All-Star team. From then on, his defense became exceptional, and his offensive game also significantly improved, leading him to win two Olympic gold medals (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024) and two NBA championships (2021 with Bucks and 2024 with Celtics).

Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem had a blunt and straight-forward message to his former teammate Jimmy Butler regarding the rumors of his move back to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Miami Heat didn’t have their best player on the court in the playoffs. They were perhaps the only team in the Eastern Conference with a chance to beat the Boston Celtics, but those chances vanished when Jimmy Butler fell with an injury.

Butler has been the undisputed leader and best player for this organization since he signed with them in 2019. He’s led them to two trips to the NBA Finals, although they’ve lost both times.

That’s why it’s not a surprise to see the Philadelphia 76ers wanting to bring him back. According to a report by Keith Pompey, they realize they made a mistake by not giving him a max contract extension back then.

The Sixers Regret Letting Jimmy Butler Go

“Talking to my sources, the 76ers’ ownership group — they kinda regret what they did five years ago [in trading Jimmy Butler] and they see the success that he’s had,” wrote Pompey. “And they realize he could be in their eyes, the missing piece, and they’re willing to give him the money he wants.”

Jimmy Butler

Butler is reportedly looking to get a max contract extension. If the Heat aren’t willing to meet his asking price, the Sixers could look to trade for him and fulfill his demands:

“The Sixers view him as a fallback option if they are unable to sign Paul George in free agency,” wrote Pompey. “And, according to sources, the Sixers are prepared to give Butler a maximum-salary extension if things align and he forces a trade out of Miami.”

Udonis Haslem Says Butler Will Have To Go Through Him To Leave Miami

However, Udonis Haslem just doesn’t see that happening. In his latest appearance on Get Up, he jokingly said that the Sixers had a better chance to get LeBron James than to get Butler, as he’s just not going to allow that to happen:

“They (Sixers) got a better chance of getting Bronny (than) they do of getting Jimmy,” Haslem said. “Hell to the naw, you can’t get out of the 305. How you gonna do that? You gotta go through me. I’m standing at the county line.”

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/nba-rumors-sixers-could-make-a-shocking-run-at-jimmy-butler-but-theres-a-catch" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20240529_BUS_128908_Butler.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="With Jimmy Butler's future reportedly up in the air, it seems like the Philadelphia 76ers could welcome him back if the Miami Heat are willing to let him go.

All jokes aside, the Sixers giving Butler a max contract six years after refusing to do so might not be the wisest decision, and the Heat must also be cautious about overpaying for an injury-prone player about to turn 35 years old.

With the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly keeping tabs on JJ Redick as a coaching candidate, Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem explained why it might not be the best idea.
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a coach. If that sounds familiar, that’s because it is. This will be the fourth coach they’ve had in seven years with LeBron James on the team.

Needless to say, there aren’t that many feasible options around the NBA right now, much less one that could both move the needle and get LeBron’s respect in the locker room.

That’s why, as much as JJ Redick could fit that criteria because of his relationship with James, Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem believes that might not be the wisest decision.

Udonis Haslem Says JJ Redick Shouldn’t Coach The Lakers

Per Haslem, Redick could have to deal with a ‘cynical locker room,’ as some of the players might feel like he’s just LeBron’s puppet and will always question his authority:

Udonis Haslem during the 2023 NBA Finals

“If it’s JJ [Redick], you’re going to have a cynical locker room,” Haslem said on ESPN’s NBA Today. “You’re gonna have guys saying, ‘Is coach gonna do a podcast after the game with LeBron?’ He’s gonna have a cynical locker room that side-eyes everything JJ says. They’re gonna wonder ‘Is it JJ’s message or is it LeBron’s message?’”

Haslem later talked about how the Lakers could go after Chris Quinn, who’s one of Erik Spoelstra’s top assistants, as a guy who LeBron would listen and respect. Still, he didn’t say he was an actual candidate:

“I’m not just saying this ’cause he’s my guy, but Chris Quinn has relationships coaching LeBron James in Miami,” Haslem said. “So I know he’s a guy that LeBron respects. Now is he a true, true candidate? Who knows because you might put names out there even though you’ve already picked.”

At the end of the day, you can’t win if you don’t have your locker room’s trust, and it all starts with the star player. However, there’s also a fine line they need to walk, and this could be a tricky situation for the Purple & Gold.

LeBron James formed a Big Three with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to succeed at the Miami Heat, but Gilbert Arena credits another player for their two championships together.
In the summer of 2010, the Miami Heat pulled off a historic move by pairing LeBron James with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Florida. Unsurprisingly, that paid off in two NBA championships.

The Heat failed to get the trophy in the first season with their Big Three, suffering an unexpected loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals. However, they bounced back with consecutive rings in 2012 and 2013.

LeBron went on to succeed in Cleveland and Los Angeles, but those two victories with the Heat will always be special. Though Wade and Bosh played a pivotal role in his first titles, Gilbert Arenas believes Udonis Haslem deserves credit for The King’s success in Miami.

Gilbert Arenas says LeBron won in Miami because of Udonis Haslem

“The two championships LeBron got there, you got to credit him for it because he’s the one that took the pay cut to make it happen,” Gilbert Arenas said on his podcast. “UD was offered $33 million to go to Milwaukee, turned that down, and signed whatever was left. He protected his stars. You foul Dwyane Wade, you hit LeBron, you hit anybody on this team, I’m coming.“

When did LeBron James leave the Heat?

LeBron James left the Miami Heat in the summer of 2014, shortly after losing the NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs.

That offseason, The King decided to go back to the Cleveland Cavaliers, aiming to help the franchise that drafted him first overall in 2003 win its first ever NBA championship.

How many seasons did Udonis Haslem spend in Miami?

Udonis Haslem spent 20 NBA seasons with the Miami Heat from 2003 to 2023.

Jimmy Butler has been a seamless fit with the Miami Heat, and team legend Udonis Haslem explains why he's been so positive for them.
The Miami Heat made a big gamble by choosing Jimmy Butler to be their next franchise player. He had developed a close relationship with Dwyane Wade from their days with the Chicago Bulls, and he just knew he was the right guy to carry his torch.

Butler had a bit of a tough reputation at the time they signed him. Even so, it didn’t take long before he proved to be just perfect for that organization, even leading them back to the NBA Finals.

So, now that Butler has shaken off that narrative about being a bad teammate, Heat legend Udonis Haslem explained just how much of a positive impact he’s made since arriving in South Florida.

Udonis Haslem Says Jimmy Butler Turned The Heat Into A Pack Of Dogs

“I had got a chance to go out to dinner with Jimmy with D-Wade and just getting a chance to understand Jimmy,” Haslem said on ‘All The Smoke’.“The first thing people think about Jimmy is: ‘he listens to country music, he must be weird.’ Ain’t nothing weird about Jimmy. If you get a chance to sit down and chop it up with Jimmy, you understand Jimmy; you know where he comes from.”

“Jimmy just keeps everything close to him,” Haslem continued.“He ain’t wide open with his friendships; he ain’t got a lot of friends, he ain’t running his mouth out there telling all his business. I respect that and I appreciate that. Like I tell people all the time, if you put a dog outside, he gonna go around and go in your trash can, tear your yard open up, and you’re gonna come out in the morning, and your sh*t is gonna be in shambles. You put it in the kennel with other dogs, he’s gonna make a pack and that’s what he did. He came down here with us and he made a pack.”

Butler is a proven winner and a leader. Some may not like his ways from the outside, but he’s the kind of player everyone would love to have on their team. Hopefully, all that hard work will one day pay off with a ring.

Udonis Haslem announced he will continue for one more season with the Miami Heat. Therefore, he joins a unique list of players with 20 seasons or more playing for one team, check it out.
Not many players in the National Basketball Association history can say they had a long-lasting career. In fact, one of the best NBA players, if not the best of all-time, Michael Jordan had a 13th-season career. Also, to be an important player throughout all of it, is reserved only to a few like LeBron James.

But when it is combined the time with the place, is almost impossible to find players who have lasted at least 20 seasons in the NBA, and didn’t changed their jersey at all. However, this task has been completed for two NBA superstars in the past.

Therefore, to play in the NBA for such long time is a bigaccomplishmentthat only 11 players have had the long-lasting effort to play for at least 20 seasons. However, for this opportunity, the list is composed by players with one-worn jersey in his NBA Career.

Which NBA players have played withonly one franchise in a 20+ season-career?

As Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported, “Udonis Haslem announces he’s returning to the Heat for a 20th NBA season. Says he wants to follow through with what his dad wanted for him — to reach 20 seasons.”Therefore, Haslem will play his 20th NBA Season with the same franchise he started it.

Now, the list of NBA players who have played with only one franchise in a 20+ season career increases by one. Alongside Haslem, the list is composed by the one-time NBA Champion with the Dallas Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki, and the five-time NBA Champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant.

Haslem will surpass historic NBA players such as Tim Duncan, former player of the San Antonio Spurs who won five NBA Championships, and ten-time All Star, John Stockton who played with the Utah Jazz. Both players played 19 seasons for their NBA franchises.

Miami Heat veteran Udonis Haslem has looked back into the franchise's golden years in the 2010s and discussed his role in the famous team headlined bythe'Big 3' of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.
Getting into fans’ hearts is not easy for any basketball player. Maybe those who shine game in and game out have an easier time doing so, but that’s not the only way to build an unbreakable bond with an NBA franchise.

If not, just ask Udonis Haslem, who has built a long-lasting career in his hometown teamMiami Heat with hard work, commitment, and loyalty. The 41-year-old forward seemed destined to write history in South Florida.

Haslem is entering his 19th season in the National Basketball Association, using his experience to lead in the locker room and guide the youngsters. And it’s been a fantastic road so far, having been part of all three titles the franchise has won.

Udonis Haslem talks about his part in the LeBron, Wade, Bosh Heat ‘Big 3’ era

Throughout his nearly 20 years in Miami, Haslem has seen countless players come and go, building a special relationship with many of them. And he has shared the locker room with the biggest names in the league.

But the fact that he was part of the three championship-winning teams says a lot. He’s been there in the franchise’s best moments, including the ‘Heatles‘ era when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh set up the mightiest trio in the NBA. And in an extensive, worth-reading interview with GQ‘s Tyler R. Tynes, Haslem talked about his importance for that team that won two rings.

[Transcript via GQ]

“S–, I was almost outta here — they ain’t have no money left. I was about gone. They wasn’t saving enough for me. They just wanted the big boys. They wasn’t thinking about me, the only one who was was [Wade]. He understood my importance to this city and franchise and thank God he did because it paid off. I don’t care what nobody say, I had my moments and we don’t win none of those rings without me. I did my job and that’s all you can do: Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. I had some critical moments where I had to step in and hold down the fort. Thank God [Wade] stood up and said, ‘we need this mother—–.’Because sometimes people get caught up in dollar signs and what makes “cents’ doesn’t always make sense.

Udonis Haslem #40 (left) alongside Mario Chalmers #15, Dwayne Wade #3, Chris Bosh #1, and LeBron James #6 in the 2011 NBA finals.

“You can surround guys who drive the bus, who sit on the bus, but if you ain’t got somebody who can change the tires and the oil, your bus ain’t moving. You need a guy like me: who will do the dirty work, take that charge, do the things that won’t show up on the statsheet but it equals winning. [Wade] understood that, LeBron understood that, [Bosh] understood that. If they didn’t, it’s no way those guys take less money and cut off a piece of their pie for me to stay. They didn’t know me. They didn’t have to do that. But they understood what I brought to the table and I was able to deliver.”

Well, UD just spoke facts there. This is a teamgame, and winning championships is rarely a one-man task. It takes many people to build a title-contending side, and as Haslem said, every role plays an extremely important part in the final result. If it wasn’t that way, he wouldn’t have built a 19-year career with the Miami Heat.
