UEFA's relationship with FIFA is not getting better, as the European confederation is willing to continue their boycott as protest against Gianni Infantino

UEFA was the first confederation to boycott FIFA competitions due to Gianni Infantino‘s attempt to privatize the World Cup. Now, new reports indicate that even if the FIFA president backtracked his plans, the European confederation is still not trusting him, so the boycott might continue.

Per Ben Jacobs of Talk Sport, UEFA will continue their boycott. “UEFA’s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to the non participation in FIFA competitions.

“First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.

“These conditions have not been met. In addition, UEFA made it abundantly clear in it’s statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency. That position holds. Yesterday’s announcement that some people employed by the FIFA President (and whose careers depend on his favour) agree with him changes nothing.”

UEFA is not the only one keeping the boycott

Per Martyn Ziegler of The Times, “Concacaf federations’ overwhelming response to Infantino’s statement is that they have lost confidence in the FIFA president.” Infantino’s time as FIFA’s president might be coming to a dramatic end.

The English FA has formally withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino.

UEFA's boycott of all FIFA tournaments also still stands, stating that conditions have not been met, and making it clear there is no confidence in Gianni Infantino's presidency ❌ pic.twitter.com/VjHJ1ff5IY
— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) August 6, 2026

While soccer is a business, this was seen as pure greed by Infantino. So much so, that he jeopardized one of the most treasured things in sports: transparency and fair play. Hence, he’s been left with little to no allies, and with huge opposition.

When does Infantino’s tenure end?

Gianni Infantino‘s current term as FIFA president will end in March 2027. At first it was believed that he was heavily endorsed to run for a fourth term.

However, if FIFA is getting boycotted strictly because of him, his future might be really cloudy. Without UEFA, FIFA loses most of the soccer juggernauts. Hence, FIFA is at a crossroads.

UEFA welcomed FIFA's decision to reverse its proposals for upcoming tournaments such as the World Cup, which had been promoted by Gianni Infantino.

The football world was shaken in recent hours after UEFA pushed for a boycott of FIFA following the announcement of Gianni Infantino‘s proposal to use private investment to fund tournaments such as the World Cup. It was eventually confirmed that the commercial proposals would not move forward, and European football’s governing body criticized the strategy promoted by FIFA’s president.

In a strongly worded statement published on its official Instagram page, UEFA criticized Infantino’s failure to deliver on the promises he made when he was elected president, while also outlining the changes FIFA will need to face moving forward. “UEFA welcomes FIFA’s decision to withdraw its plan to sell a stake in its competitions, including the World Cup, into private hands,” the statement began.

“Of course we have to be transparent,” Infantino said at the time. “FIFA’s money is your money. It is not the money of the FIFA president.” UEFA strongly responded: “On both of these promises, he has failed to deliver.”

Despite believing it has won the first battle, UEFA still considers that this is only the beginning: “This is a victory for the whole game. But it must not be the end of the story. The proposal has gone. The task of rebuilding trust in FIFA has only just begun.”

General view outside FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) global headquarters.

What was Infantino’s proposal?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed creating a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), valued at $20 billion, to handle FIFA’s commercial and event operations, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. Under the plan, FIFA would sell a 20% minority stake to private equity investors—raising up to $4.2 billion—in exchange for a share of future profits.

Infantino argued the move would “democratize” football by allowing FIFA to double development funding to $20 million for each of its 211 member federations. However, after fierce opposition from UEFA and other regional bodies over the commercialization of the sport, Infantino ultimately withdrew the proposal.

Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, speaks during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The strong rejection

The proposal met fierce resistance from key football governing bodies, who argued that handing a stake in FIFA’s commercial rights to private investors would undermine the sport’s integrity and long-term control. Opposition grew rapidly as AFC joined UEFA and Concacaf in firmly rejecting the plan, presenting a united front that ultimately forced FIFA to shelve the project.

Conmebol refrains from following UEFA and Concacaf and awaits further information from FIFA regarding its plans.

Gianni Infantino’s attempt to launch a new investment plan has faced significant pushback, following UEFA‘s initial boycott of the decision and Concacaf subsequently joining in to reject FIFA‘s proposal for the good of the sport. While an official stance was expected from CONMEBOL, the South American governing body took a different direction.

Amid the surrounding controversy, CONMEBOL issued an official statement outlining the need to receive further information about the proposal before making a decision. Titled “Soccer Comes First,” the release addressed the situation currently keeping sports fans worldwide on edge.

“CONMEBOL reaffirms that its priority will always be soccer: its values, its people, and the passion that makes it the most popular sport in the world,” the entity led by Alejandro Dominguez stated. “We understand that the development of soccer requires commercial and financial decisions. However, these decisions must always serve soccer and never stand above its essence. Soccer always comes first.”

The demand for transparency

Rather than opting for an immediate rejection, CONMEBOL called for greater transparency and details regarding FIFA’s plans for the new FFE project, leaving open the possibility of eventually offering their support.

President Gianni Infantino.

“Since CONMEBOL became aware of the proposal presented by FIFA regarding the FFE project, and in compliance with its institutional procedures, it initiated a consultation process with its Member Associations and convened a Council meeting for the sole purpose of analyzing and evaluating the proposal with the responsibility and rigor the matter requires,” the statement noted, setting the organization apart from other confederations.

“With that goal in mind, CONMEBOL requested additional information and clarification from FIFA regarding various aspects related to the scope, structure, governance, and potential effects of the FFE project,” the statement added. “CONMEBOL will continue to act with prudence, responsibility, and a spirit of collaboration, contributing to the strengthening of global soccer exclusively through institutional channels and principles of good governance.”

What does the project entail?

The proposal centers on a commercial restructuring that would overhaul the management of FIFA‘s primary competitions by creating a company to administer commercial operations and events such as the World Cup, the Club World Cup, and other tournaments governed by the organization.

As part of the plan, top leadership is considering selling between 20% and 30% of the newly formed entity to private investors, who would hold minority stakes without controlling power. According to FIFA, all net profits generated by the new enterprise will be reinvested into global soccer development.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing opposition to his plans for the next World Cup and other tournaments, with the AFC, UEFA, and Concacaf among those against his proposal.

Gianni Infantino is at the center of controversy after both UEFA and Concacaf voiced their opposition to his plans to introduce private investment ahead of next World Cup and other FIFA tournaments. Now, the AFC has revealed its position through an official statement.

“The AFC stands in solidarity with UEFA and CONCACAF in expressing serious concerns over FIFA’s proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA’s flagship competitions and the decision-making process around FFE,” the Asian Football Confederation stated through its official website.

The same continued: “The fact that the situation has reached the point where the real possibility of a FIFA World Cup boycott has entered public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game. Football should never have been placed in such a position.”

What is Gianni Infantino proposing?

Gianni Infantino sparked widespread controversy by proposing a $20 billion plan to sell a 20% stake in FIFA’s commercial operations and World Cup rights to private equity investors. The proposal faced immediate opposition from European football leadership, who argued that selling public stakes in the game’s premier tournament jeopardizes its historical integrity for commercial profit.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino

In response to the initiative, European member nations, supported by Concacaf and AFC, took a firm stance as UEFA boycotts FIFA tournaments, declaring that no European national teams will participate in future FIFA competitions—including the World Cup—until the private equity plan is completely abandoned.

More support for Concacaf

UEFA and Concacaf are not alone in their objections to the recent developments unfolding in the world of football. U.S. Soccer has also voiced its support, opposing these proposed changes. “U.S. Soccer stands with Concacaf and its members,” they stated.

Gianni Infantino suffers another roadblock to his FIFA Forward Enterprise plans as Concacaf joins UEFA, who threaten to boycott the World Cup if the plan moves forward.

Concacaf unanimously voted to reject Gianni Infantino‘s FIFA Forward Enterprise plans. All 41 members voted against this moving forward. Hence, it joins UEFA, who threatened to boycott the next FIFA World Cup.

Infantino proposed a plan to create a private commercial entity to manage the FIFA World Cup and other major FIFA events. This entity would be called the FIFA Forward Enterprise. Of course, this hasn’t settled well in Concacaf and UEFA. This would really put an asterisk in the neutrality factor, as private investors interests could interfere in sports transparency.

Concacaf released a statement on the matter, where they assure they are “an organization founded on service, transparent governance, and the long-term stewardship of football.” Not only that, but the statement adds, “the membership expressed deep concerns about the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies.

In addition, the need for private equity investment to fund new and existing FIFA Forward programs following the most profitable FIFA World Cup in history was questioned. The discussion reinforced the need for greater transparency and proper governance.”

Concacaf revealed three clear conclusions

To end the statement, which pretty much aligns with UEFA, Concacaf members concluded with three main conclusions. All center towards transparency, and preserve the integrity of the game:

🚨 BREAKING: All 41 Concacaf members have rejected Gianni Infantino's FIFA Forward Enterprise plans.

"Concacaf is a confederation united by the love of our game, where football comes first.

“- Rejected the proposal
– Tasked their FIFA Council Members with engaging FIFA to determine how existing FIFA reserves could be used to increase FIFA Forward funding for football development across our region; and
– Tasked their FIFA Council Members with instructing the FIFA President to ensure that any matter follows the proper governance processes via staff and FIFA Council, in accordance with the FIFA Statutes.”

Concacaf didn’t go as big as UEFA, but could

UEFA directly admitted that if the FIFA Forward Enterprise goes forward, the European entity would directly boycott tournaments. Concacaf didn’t go that far. But, if the issue at hand keeps going, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of the possibilities that Concacaf does the same.

UEFA is turning its back on Gianni Infantino and FIFA, and its boycott could endanger several World Cups throughout 2026.

Although nothing comes close to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it wasn’t the only international soccer competition scheduled for 2026. As UEFA confirmed a World Cup boycott on FIFA, there are many tournaments that could be affected.

UEFA is going after FIFA, mainly showing its discomfort with President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors. As long as this plan remains active, no UEFA national team will participate in FIFA tournaments.

At first read, many soccer fans believe this only puts the upcoming 2030 World Cup—and the qualifying process—in danger. In reality, however, the effects of the boycott can be seen right away.

In fact, four FIFA tournaments will be affected by UEFA’s boycott in the coming months: the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, U-17 Women’s World Cup, U-17 Men’s World Cup, and the Women’s World Cup 2027 UEFA qualifiers.

UEFA president Ceferin and FIFA president Infantino at 2024 UEFA Euro.

U-20 Women’s World Cup is priority

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup won’t only feature six UEFA teams (Poland, England, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain), but it is also set to be hosted in a European country (Poland). That makes it the most complex situation for more reasons than one.

Not only is it the first World Cup on FIFA’s upcoming schedule, but because it is being hosted in Europe, if the boycott stands, soccer’s governing body will have to find a way to replace the European sides and come up with a new venue as well.

The curtain-raiser is set for Sept. 5, so the clock is ticking. The easiest solution would be for Infantino and FIFA to scrap their plan, but it remains to be seen whether they will give up so easily in this political tug-of-war with UEFA.

Other UEFA teams in FIFA 2026 tournaments

Moreover, there will be no shortage of UEFA national teams at the Men’s U-17 World Cup in Qatar (November-December). Greece, Denmark, France, Italy, Croatia, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Serbia, and Romania have all qualified, but their status is now up in the air.

At the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco (October-November), UEFA’s representatives include Germany, Poland, Norway, France, and Spain. Just like the men’s teams in the same age group, their status remains on hold while UEFA’s boycott of FIFA competitions is in effect.

Lastly, although the Women’s World Cup is scheduled for 2027 in Brazil, the UEFA qualifiers have yet to be played. UEFA has 11 confirmed slots at the biggest tournament in women’s international soccer, with a potential 12th through the Intercontinental Play-Off. At the last Women’s World Cup in 2023, 12 UEFA teams qualified, and the final featured two European powerhouses, with Spain defeating England.

https://bolavip.com/en/soccer/uefa-confirms-world-cup-boycott-after-gianni-infantinos-controversial-proposal

Gianni Infantino has triggered one of the biggest governance disputes in modern soccer. The future of the World Cup is at stake.

UEFA has confirmed a dramatic response to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s latest commercial plans around the World Cup as all European members will refuse to participate in FIFA competitions if the governing body’s proposed restructuring moves forward.

The dispute centers on Infantino’s reported plan to create a private commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise, to manage the FIFA World Cup and other major tournaments. The proposal would reportedly allow between 20% and 30% of the company to be sold to outside investors, with the goal of generating additional revenue that could later be distributed among soccer federations around the world.

The proposal has sparked strong opposition across Europe, where many officials believe the World Cup and FIFA’s flagship competitions should remain under the direct control of the sport’s governing bodies rather than private investors. UEFA has consistently argued that soccer’s most prestigious tournaments should not become commercial assets owned in part by external shareholders.

Will UEFA boycott the World Cup?

Yes. UEFA’s opposition to the proposal will extend beyond public criticism if the plan is not abandoned. UEFA’s member associations are prepared to take a much firmer stance should FIFA continue pursuing private investment in its competitions.

“As a result of today’s discussion, no UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.”

Such a move would represent one of the most significant governance disputes in modern soccer and could fundamentally reshape the relationship between FIFA and Europe’s national associations. As of now, FIFA has not announced any change to its broader commercial ambitions, while the long-term outcome of the discussions remains uncertain.

What would a World Cup boycott mean for soccer?

If UEFA were ultimately to withdraw from FIFA competitions, the consequences would be unprecedented. The FIFA World Cup without traditional European powers such as Spain, France, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Croatia would dramatically alter the tournament’s competitive landscape and commercial value.

Many of the sport’s biggest stars represent UEFA nations, making such a scenario difficult to imagine. At the same time, supporters of Infantino’s reported proposal argue that increased commercial investment could generate greater financial resources for smaller soccer federations around the world.

Whether FIFA can convince enough member associations to support that vision, or whether UEFA’s resistance grows into a broader conflict, could become one of the defining governance stories in international soccer over the coming months.

“UEFA and its 55 member associations stand as one. We unanimously and unequivocally reject FIFA’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors.”

FIFA's decision to lift Folarin Balogun's suspension has sparked one of the biggest controversies of the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA has sparked major controversy after deciding to lift Folarin Balogun‘s automatic one-match suspension following the striker’s red card during the USA’s win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.

The decision means the United States will have one of their most important attacking players available for the upcoming Round of 16 clash with Belgium in Seattle.

The ruling has drawn a fierce reaction not only from Belgium but also from UEFA, which publicly defended one of its affiliated national teams and accused FIFA of undermining the integrity of the competition.

UEFA criticizes Folarin Balogun’s decision

UEFA issued a strongly worded statement criticizing FIFA’s unprecedented decision. “Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line. Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition.”

For UEFA, an automatic suspension following a red card leaves no room for interpretation or ambiguity, emphasizing that FIFA’s decision sets a dangerous precedent for soccer.

“Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.”

According to UEFA, the automatic one-match suspension following a red card is one of soccer’s fundamental regulations and should not be altered during an ongoing tournament.

USA receives a huge boost before facing Belgium

The decision gives the United States a significant advantage ahead of one of the biggest matches of the tournament. Balogun returns to a USMNT side chasing a place in the quarterfinals on home soil, while Belgium arrive after surviving a dramatic Round of 32 comeback against Senegal.

Despite boasting stars such as Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, and Jeremy Doku, Belgium have endured several difficult moments throughout the World Cup and now face an American team strengthened by Balogun’s availability. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia blasted FIFA over the Balogun decision.

UEFA warns about the precedent

UEFA also argued that the decision could have lasting consequences beyond the 2026 World Cup. It is an extraordinarily strong statement at a pivotal moment of the tournament.

“When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined. Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition. Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws.”

The statement has generated worldwide attention, adding another layer of intrigue to an already highly anticipated showdown between Belgium and the United States, with FIFA’s decision now becoming one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.

“A tournament is never a pure standalone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole. We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

Before PSG face Arsenal at the UEFA Champions League final in Budapest’s Puskas Arena, a massive behind-the-scenes production sets the tone for the opening ceremony spectacle.
Hundreds of people are involved in producing the opening ceremony, with well over 500 crew members typically working behind the scenes before kickoff of matches like PSG vs Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final. Follow the game between PSG and Arsenal live with us!

Behind the spectacle surrounding the showdown, the UEFA UCL opening ceremony requires a mix of stage designers, lighting engineers, choreographers, broadcast teams, security staff and event coordinators.

Every element is timed to the second, ensuring the performance aligns with global television broadcasts. What once was a simple pre-match presentation has evolved into a large-scale entertainment showcase that blends soccer and music.

How many crew members work on the Champions League final show?

Around 500 to 600 crew members are typically involved in the UEFA Champions League final opening ceremony. The scale of the operation turns a short pre-match performance into a massive live production coordinated by UEFA. This year, The Killers opened the pregame show with the song “When You Were Young.”

In previous editions, the popular organization has confirmed that more than 1000 people have been directly involved in producing the opening show alone, separate from matchday operations and security teams.

According to documented Union of European Football Associations final production structures, the opening ceremony requires a wide network of specialists working simultaneously, including:

stage designers

lighting technicians

choreographers

sound engineers

camera operators

broadcast directors

production assistants

How is the UEFA Champions League final opening ceremony produced?

The Champions League final opening ceremony is produced through a coordinated collaboration between UEFA, broadcast partners and international live-event production companies.

The process begins months before kickoff with creative planning, concept design and technical mapping of the stadium. Specialist production companies transform the pitch into a temporary concert-grade stage.

This includes installing LED platforms, sound systems, pyrotechnics, lighting rigs and broadcast infrastructure. One of the key production partners frequently involved in recent editions is Balich Wonder Studio. In 2026, it all led to a fantastic show in which The Killers performed four songs.

How long does it take to prepare the Champions League final show?

Preparation for the Champions League final opening ceremony usually takes several weeks in total, with the most intensive stadium setup phase lasting around 5 to 10 days before the match.

While planning and creative development can stretch over months, the physical transformation of the stadium begins shortly before the final. During this period, production teams install the stage, test lighting systems and calibrate sound.

In the final days before kickoff, full run-throughs are completed to synchronize every element of the show with broadcast timing, ensuring the performance ends just minutes before players walk onto the pitch. The Killers’ 2026 pregame show gave plenty to talk about, with positive reactions on social media.

Is the Champions League final opening ceremony live or pre-recorded?

The UEFA Champions League final opening ceremony is performed live inside the stadium, not pre-recorded. Every performance element happens in real time in front of both the crowd and global television audience.

Although some promotional visuals or short video segments may be pre-produced and displayed before the ceremony begins, the actual artistic performance is executed live and tightly synchronized with the broadcast feed.

The atmosphere inside the UEFA Champions League Final between PSG and Arsenal rises early, as The Killers take over the pre-match stage with a set that builds momentum long before kickoff and sets the tone.
The Killers delivered a high-energy pre-match set at the 2026 UEFA Champions League Final, performing before kickoff of the showdown between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
The performance was part of UEFA’s expanding opening ceremony production, designed to turn Europe’s biggest club match into a full-scale entertainment spectacle. Without a doubt, it has been one of the most prepared editions.

The pre-match show has become an increasingly central part of the modern final presentation, and this year’s edition followed that trend with a performance aimed at amplifying the emotional stakes before the first whistle.

What songs did The Killers play at the 2026 Champions League final?

The Killers delivered a short, stadium-focused setlist at the 2026 UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show, performing a selection of their biggest hits before the Paris Saint-Germain vs Arsenal clash at the Puskas Arena.

According to UEFA’s official announcement, the set was designed as a “career-spanning” showcase, focusing on globally recognized stadium anthems rather than deep cuts, ensuring maximum impact for a live international audience.

The songs featured in the opening show were:

When You Were Young

Human

All These Things That I’ve Done

Mr. Brightside

UEFA’s production placed heavy emphasis on turning the pre-match window into a full entertainment spectacle, and The Killers’ set followed that trend with a high-energy, condensed performance tailored to the countdown to kickoff.

Before PSG and Arsenal stepped onto the pitch in Budapest, The Killers transformed the Champions League final atmosphere with a performance that immediately set social media buzzing and searching for the opening track.
The lights at Puskas Arena came alive long before kickoff as The Killers took center stage ahead of the 2026 UEFA Champions League final. With millions watching around the world, the band delivered a high-energy opening ceremony.

Frontman Brandon Flowers and the Las Vegas rock group had already generated major anticipation after UEFA announced their participation months earlier through a promotional short film featuring David Beckham.

By the time players emerged from the tunnel in Budapest, the atmosphere inside the stadium had shifted from tense to electric, with the pre-match show adding another memorable chapter to the UCL’s growing entertainment tradition.

What song did The Killers open their set with at the UCL final?

The Killers opened their set at the 2026 UEFA Champions League final with “When You Were Young”. The iconic track immediately energized the crowd before PSG and Arsenal took the field for one of the biggest matches of the European season.

The Las Vegas rock band headlined the UCL final opening ceremony as part of UEFA’s pre-match entertainment show, continuing the competition’s recent tradition of combining live music with soccer’s biggest club event.

As soon as the opening notes of “When You Were Young“ began, fans inside the stadium and viewers around the world quickly recognized one of the band’s most famous songs, turning the performance into an instant talking point on social media.
