Victoria Mboko was expected to be one of the young names to watch in New York, but the Canadian star will not be part of the 2026 US Open field, raising questions about her sudden absence.

Victoria Mboko will be absent from the 2026 US Open, ending a difficult stretch for one of Canada’s brightest young tennis stars. The 19-year-old was left off the tournament’s official entry list as she continues to recover from a left knee injury.

She sustained damage to the medial collateral ligament in her left knee after slipping during her second-round singles match against Karolina Pliskova. The setback forced her to miss the rest of the grass-court season.

With the US Open set to begin in New York on August 30, her absence will be another blow after a breakthrough season that saw her reach the Top 10 and establish herself as a major force on the WTA Tour.

When could Victoria Mboko return to the WTA Tour?

Victoria Mboko does not have a confirmed return date, and her next appearance will depend on her recovery from the left knee MCL injury she suffered at Queen’s Club in June.

She has been sidelined since the injury and was forced to miss Wimbledon, the National Bank Open in Toronto, Cincinnati and now the 2026 US Open. The WTA recently listed her as inactive, with her last competitive appearance coming at Queen’s.

Victoria Mboko during the Women’s Singles second round match on Day Three of the HSBC Championships (Source: Paul Harding/Getty Images)

She injured her knee on June 10 when she slipped while chasing down a forehand against Karolina Pliskova. She retired while trailing 6-2, 3-4 and subsequently confirmed that the fall caused an MCL injury.

At the time, she said the injury would keep her out for the remainder of the grass-court season, which immediately ruled out Wimbledon. There was initially some hope that she return for the North American hard-court swing.

However, she later announced that she would also miss the National Bank Open in Toronto, where she was the defending champion. In her statement, she described the setback as disappointing but indicated that she expected to return to competition in the future.

How has Victoria Mboko performed in 2026?

Victoria Mboko has enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 season despite her injury, reaching three WTA finals, making the Australian Open round of 16 and climbing as high as No. 9 in the world. Her results before the knee setback established her as one of the most significant young players on the WTA Tour.

The Canadian made an immediate impact in January by reaching the Adelaide International final, where she lost to Mirra Andreeva. She followed that run with her best Grand Slam result to that point at the Australian Open, advancing to the fourth round before falling to eventual world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. The WTA lists her 2026 Australian Open record at 3-1.

Her momentum continued in Doha. She reached the final of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, her second WTA 1000 final of the season, defeating Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals.

That run also pushed her into the Top 10 for the first time, making her only the fourth Canadian woman to reach that ranking level. She ultimately lost the final to Karolina Muchova in straight sets.

Emma Raducanu’s absence from the 2026 US Open has left a notable gap in the women’s draw, with the former champion’s latest setback adding another twist to her season.

Emma Raducanu will miss the 2026 US Open after a stress fracture in her right lower leg forced her out of the tournament. The former champion had already been sidelined since Wimbledon, and her latest setback leaves her absent from the Grand Slam she famously won in 2021.

The timing is particularly frustrating for her, who had started to rebuild momentum earlier this season. She reached the final at Queen’s Club in June, her second WTA final of the year, before the leg problem worsened.

Her withdrawal removes one of the most recognizable names from the women’s draw at Flushing Meadows. She had been listed among the five former US Open champions entered in the 2026 tournament, alongside Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka.

When will Emma Raducanu return to tennis?

Emma Raducanu does not have a confirmed return date after withdrawing from the 2026 US Open with a stress fracture in her right lower leg. Her priority is recovering fully, and there is currently no official tournament listed for her comeback.

Emma Raducanu during a training session before The Championships Wimbledon 2026 (Source: Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)

She suffered the injury during the grass-court season and was forced to miss Wimbledon. The setback came after a promising stretch that saw her reach the Queen’s Club final in June, her second WTA final of 2026. She had hoped to recover in time for the US Open, but the injury ultimately ruled out that possibility.

The 23-year-old has also dealt with a difficult 2026 away from the court. Earlier in the season, illness kept her out of several tournaments before she returned at Strasbourg in May. The WTA confirmed at the time that she had not played since Indian Wells in March and had struggled with her health during that period.

There is also uncertainty over whether she will compete again before the end of the season. Sky Sports reported that the British No. 1 could benefit from shutting down her season early, allowing her to concentrate on rehabilitation and potentially use a protected ranking when she eventually returns.

How does Emma Raducanu’s absence affect the 2026 US Open?

Emma Raducanu’s withdrawal removes one of the tournament’s most recognizable former champions from the 2026 US Open women’s singles field, while also ending any chance of seeing the 2021 champion make another deep run in New York.

Her absence is particularly notable because she remains one of the most prominent names associated with the tournament. Her 2021 triumph remains one of the most remarkable runs in US Open history.

She became the first qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam singles title, completing the tournament without dropping a set. Five years later, she will instead watch the event from the sidelines as she continues her recovery.

Her withdrawal also reduces the number of former US Open champions in the 2026 women’s draw. The tournament features several past winners, including Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, but her absence means one of the most memorable recent champions will not be part of this year’s competition.

Jannik Sinner’s absence is one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 US Open, with the world No. 1 forced to step away just as the final Grand Slam of the season begins. His withdrawal is linked to a right knee injury.

Jannik Sinner‘s absence is one of the biggest storylines heading into the 2026 US Open, especially after his dominant start to the season. The world No. 1 will miss the final Grand Slam of the year after being unable to fully recover from a right knee issue.

The Italian had been one of the leading contenders in New York after winning Wimbledon and compiling a 44-3 record in 2026. However, his knee problem forced him to skip both the Canadian Open and Cincinnati before ultimately ruling him out of the US Open.

His withdrawal also dramatically changes the men’s singles picture. With him out, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic are among the players facing a very different path to the title when the tournament begins in New York.

When will Jannik Sinner return to tennis?

Jannik Sinner is expected to return to competition in September, with the China Open in Beijing currently the leading target for his comeback. The ATP calendar lists the ATP 500 event for September 30 through October 6, but his exact return date has not been officially confirmed.

Jannik Sinner during the Gentlemen’s Singles final match on day fourteen of The Championships Wimbledon 2026 (Source: Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)

He withdrew from the US Open after determining that he needed more time to recover from the problem in his right knee. When he announced his decision on August 21, the Italian said he and his medical team had returned to the court in Monte Carlo but concluded that he was not ready to compete in New York.

The decision followed his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open earlier in August. At the time, he said his right knee was still causing problems despite the work done with his medical team and acknowledged that he was not yet in condition to compete.

That makes the China Open a logical comeback window rather than a guaranteed commitment. The Beijing tournament is scheduled to begin on September 30, giving Sinner several additional weeks to complete his recovery before potentially returning to match play. His subsequent schedule includes the Shanghai Masters, which runs from October 7-18.

How does Sinner’s absence affect the 2026 US Open?

Sinner’s withdrawal leaves the 2026 US Open men’s singles draw without its No. 1 seed and one of the tournament’s biggest title favorites, opening the door for Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The official entry list records him as withdrawn on August 21.

The change is significant because he arrived in New York having put together a 44-3 record and six titles during the 2026 season. He also won Wimbledon in July, defeating Zverev in the final and reinforcing his position at the top of the men’s game.

With Sinner out, Zverev enters the US Open as the top seed, while Alcaraz is No. 2 and Djokovic is No. 7. The draw has already created an intriguing scenario: Alcaraz and Djokovic are in the same half, meaning they could meet before the final.

Alcaraz’s situation adds another layer of uncertainty. The defending champion is returning after missing almost five months because of a right wrist injury, and his first-round matchup against Roman Safiullin gives him an immediate test after such a long competitive absence.

For Djokovic, meanwhile, Sinner’s absence removes the player who has been one of his biggest obstacles at the majors. The Serbian arrives in New York chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, while Zverev’s recent form — including his first major triumph at Roland Garros — makes the German another serious contender.

In one of the U.S. Open’s biggest storylines, Roger Federer is set to return to Flushing Meadows after a five-year absence, breaking his silence on his anticipated comeback.

As Roger Federer prepares to step onto a competitive court for the first time in nearly five years, the US Open is buzzing for the legendary Swiss star’s return to Arthur Ashe Stadium. Speaking ahead of the emotional showcase, the 20-time Grand Slam champion admitted that nerves are taking over.

“To be honest, I’m very nervous. I haven’t played a single match in, I don’t know, maybe five years. I don’t know how I’ll do it. There’s a lot of uncertainty, but also a lot of joy to be able to return. I’ll really have the opportunity to say thank you and goodbye, which I think is important for some people,“ Federer said candidly to the media regarding his return to Flushing Meadows.

Reflecting on the long road leading to this final farewell, Federer noted that various off-court commitments and personal circumstances repeatedly delayed his ability to schedule an exhibition match earlier.

Even as active rivals like Novak Djokovic continue to rewrite the record books, Federer remains focused on securing a proper final curtain call at the very venue where he dominated with five consecutive titles from 2004 to 2008.

Roger Federer of Switzerland reacts.

Federer’s stats at the US Open

Roger Federer dominated the US Open with five consecutive titles from 2004 through 2008, tying the Open Era record alongside Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. Across 19 main draw appearances, he compiled an 89–14 record (86.4% win rate) and established a tournament-record 40-match winning streak.

His championship run featured victories over top rivals, including Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Reaching seven total finals and 13 quarterfinals, Federer maintained a flawless 37–0 record in the first two rounds throughout his career at Flushing Meadows.

Who is playing against Federer?

At the “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” exhibition event at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Federer faces his longtime rival Andy Roddick in a single-set singles match, revisiting their classic 2006 US Open final matchup.

Following the singles set, Federer will team up with four-time US Open champion John McEnroe for a doubles match against the tandem of Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi. Beyond his return to Flushing Meadows, Federer is also scheduled to play in “The Roger & Friends” celebrity doubles match at the Shanghai Masters in October 2026.

Despite once holding the World No. 1 ranking, Daniil Medvedev is now going through a difficult stretch and didn’t hesitate to take aim at his own sport.
High-level sports often bring glory, fame, and success, but they also carry a darker side—and tennis is no exception. Daniil Medvedev is a clear example that titles and the No. 1 ranking are not always enough to bring peace of mind.

The Russian star reached the top of the ATP rankings in early 2022, just months after winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open, while also helping Russia win the Davis Cup and reaching multiple finals across the tour. Yet, those achievements seem far removed from the struggles he’s dealing with now.

Speaking to the press at the China Open, Medvedev delivered a strikingly candid reflection on the sport that made him a champion. “When I’m in life, I am calm. On the road, I’m calm. Whatever. I argue with my wife, I’m calm. I go play tennis and I go nuts, I go crazy. Tennis can drive you crazy. It drives me crazy,” he said. “You ask me why did I have a bad year? I don’t have the exact answer. It could be my second daughter. It could be my relationship with Gilles (Cervara)”.

The 29-year-old didn’t stop there, continuing to dissect the reasons behind his uneven form. “It could be that I became older and started thinking more than when I was younger. It could be just bad luck or maybe physically I was not feeling well somewhere. You never know,” he continued.

Daniil Medvedev breaks his racquet after losing in first round of the US Open. (Elsa/Getty Images)

He later pointed to the grounding presence of his family, especially his wife and two daughters. “I definitely love my two daughters, I love my wife. It’s not a problem for me. Even if I play tennis worse somehow because I have a second daughter, I’m happy about it and I don’t care,” Medvedev added.

With 2025 marking the first season in which he hasn’t seriously contended for a Grand Slam title, Medvedev admitted he’s still searching for solutions. “For sure, I was concerned. I’m still concerned. I’m trying to find a way to show everyone that I’m capable of doing big things again,” he said of a year filled with ups and downs.

What’s next for Medvedev?

Currently ranked World No. 18, Daniil Medvedev is competing at the China Open, where he opened with a win over Cameron Norrie. That victory marked his first against a Top 50 opponent in three months, the last coming at the Halle Open against Alexander Zverev—an indication of the challenging stretch the Russian has faced.

Next up for Medvedev is a second-round clash with Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a matchup in which Medvedev holds a strong head-to-head advantage, winning four of their five previous encounters.

Jannik Sinner is preparing for his debut at the China Open, and during a press conference, he addressed his emotions in the weeks following his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final.
Jannik Sinner is set to participate in the China Open this month, and expectations are high for the Italian to contend for the title. In a media session ahead of his debut on Thursday, Sinner addressed his sentiments following his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final.

“We reflected a lot on that final against Alcaraz in New York. We are working on new things. We are changing many small details. The number of errors at the moment is certainly a bit higher, but I hope it will decrease. It’s only a matter of time,” Sinner shared with the media.

Sinner continued, “I don’t know how much I’ll be able to put the changes into practice on the court, because training is one thing, a match is another. We’ll see.” With these insights, there is an expectation for the Italian to demonstrate significant potential by learning from his mistakes in the pivotal match against Alcaraz.

Despite the loss, Sinner has not had a lackluster season in 2025. He delivered an exceptional performance at Wimbledon by winning the final against Alcaraz. He also made a notable run at Roland Garros, even though the Spaniard eventually bested him there.

“I’m very motivated. It’s fantastic to work on something new, and we’ll see how it goes. We always try to move forward, and one step forward is always better than two steps back,“ Sinner remarked to the media as he gears up for his tournament debut this week.

Former World No. 1 and six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker was critical of Jannik Sinner following his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final.
Jannik Sinner came into the US Open as one of the top contenders, building momentum after his Wimbledon triumph over Carlos Alcaraz. His strong play round after round earned high praise, including from Novak Djokovic, who called Sinner “the dominant force from the start of the tournament”.

The semifinals, however, raised some doubts. While Alcaraz dispatched Djokovic in straight sets, Sinner faced tougher-than-expected challenges from Felix Auger-Aliassime, ultimately prevailing in four sets.

In the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, it was Alcaraz who dominated, playing some of his best tennis and maintaining total focus to defeat Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. This marked Sinner’s second Grand Slam final loss to Alcaraz this year, following Roland Garros, and secured Alcaraz the ATP No. 1 ranking.

Boris Becker, the former World No. 1 and six-time Grand Slam champion, including the 1989 US Open, expressed disappointment with Sinner’s performance.

“I’m someone who always feels the need to tell the truth. So I was a little disappointed. I expected more. But of course, I wasn’t disappointed with Alcaraz because he really has learned a lot. He plays better tennis today than he did a year ago. He has more variety, he changes pace. He plays serve and volley, he plays backhand slice, he plays a forehand where you can’t see the ball. And I think Sinner has stagnated with his game for the first time,” Becker said on the Becker-Petkovic podcast.

Juan Carlos Ferrero details Alcaraz’s strategy at the final against Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, shared the strategy and preparation behind Alcaraz’s dominant performance in the US Open final against Jannik Sinner, who entered the tournament as the top favorite.

“We trained for 15 days, focusing on every detail we needed to improve against Sinner. On hard courts, Jannik is always very tough and wins many matches. This preparation helped tremendously. Carlos realized he needed to raise his level and got to work immediately. The match was perfect. He committed to consistently going after the game and applying pressure on Jannik before he could dictate play. That was one of the keys,” Ferrero told ATP.com.

“We constantly reminded him to enjoy himself and stay positive on the court, to avoid stress and go after the points. Given the way he plays, it may be easier for him than for others. Carlos’ match was flawless—a truly unforgettable performance,” he added.

Jannik Sinner fell in four sets to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final and vowed to make key changes as he looks ahead to his next goals in tennis.
In front of nearly 25,000 fans, Carlos Alcaraz captured his second US Open title on Sunday, defeating Jannik Sinner in four sets in a commanding final. The Spaniard now owns six Grand Slam trophies and officially takes over as the new ATP world No. 1.

For Sinner, the loss ended his 65-week run atop the rankings. Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Italian praised Alcaraz’s all-around game and their growing rivalry.

“He’s a different player, with no obvious weaknesses like others have, and that makes him tough,” Sinner said. “We already have a bit of history, head-to-head battles, different situations. That makes it interesting”.

Sinner admitted his predictability was a key factor in the defeat and promised adjustments in his upcoming tournaments. “That’s his style—changing things, being unpredictable. It’s on me to make changes.
Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious at this year's US Open. Sabalenka claimed her title along with a substantial prize of $5 million, and Alcaraz also earned a significant financial reward for his thrilling victory over Jannik Sinner.
The 2025 US Open has reached its thrilling conclusion over the weekend, crowning their two champions: Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka. In the women’s draw, Sabalenka successfully defended her 2024 title by defeating American Amanda Anisimova in a gripping match, 6-3, 7-6 (3), and Alcaraz won against Jannik Sinner in four sets (6-2; 3-6; 6-1; 6-4).

With their recent victories, the tennis world has been abuzz, heralding them as the preeminent players in the sport today. Alcaraz ascended to the world’s No. 1 ranking after triumphing over Sinner. The Italian’s withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open this year provided the Spaniard with an additional boost to secure the top spot.

Meanwhile, Sabalenka had already claimed the No. 1 position in the WTA rankings. However, this marked her first Grand Slam victory of the year, following earlier exits at Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and the Australian Open. Her unwavering consistency, reaching either the finals or semifinals in various tournaments, was instrumental in maintaining her status at the top.

How much did Alcaraz receive for winning the US Open?

Alcaraz’s victory held special significance for the Spaniard star: In addition to adding another Grand Slam trophy to his collection, he claimed a record $5 million prize.

Meet your 2025 US Open champions 🏆 pic.twitter.com/mTZDqaZjdP
— US Open Tennis (@usopen) September 8, 2025

This figure marks a 39% increase from last year’s winnings and solidifies the US Open‘s status as the richest tournament in tennis history. This year, the organizers have allocated a total of $90 million in prize money, a 20% rise from the previous edition.

An important factor to note is the parity in prize distribution between the men’s and women’s divisions. Hence, the winner of the women’s final, Sabalenka, took home the same $5 million prize as Alcaraz for beating Sinner, something that is not pretty common to see in professional competitions.

Sinner and Anisimova’s money prizes

Even the runners-up don’t leave empty-handed, with a $2.5 million prize awarded, which is the same amount Anisimova received for her second-place finish on Saturday. Sinner was aiming to defend his title, but Alcaraz replicated his 2022 success.

2025 US Open prize distribution by round:

Champion: $5,000,000

Runner-up: $2,500,000

Semifinal: $1,260,000

Quarterfinals: $660,000

Round of 16: $400,000

Third Round: $237,000

Second Round: $154,000

First Round: $110,000

Jack Draper's campaign at the US Open came to an unfortunate conclusion as he announced his withdrawal due to injury. The decision, prompted by health concerns, leaves fans awaiting his return. Draper has since provided an update.
One of the notable absentees at the US Open was Jack Draper. After delivering standout performances throughout his career at this prestigious tournament, Draper decided to withdraw after the second round, prompting concerns among fans about his health.

Narratives surrounding Draper’s challenges have circulated widely. Despite these setbacks, Draper had managed an impressive recovery earlier this year, convincing many of a promising comeback. However, a recurring arm injury dashed these hopes, leading to the announcement that he will be sidelined for the remainder of 2025.

“Unfortunately, the injury to my arm is something I have to rest, which means I’ll be out for the rest of 2025. It’s very difficult for me to accept as I was building some incredible momentum this year and playing exceptionally well,“ Draper stated on his X account.

Draper further expressed: “However, I’ve been through this before, and I always come back stronger because I’m so motivated to fulfill my potential as a player. A huge thank you to everyone who supports and believes in me. I can’t wait to return to the court and give it my all. See you soon!“

Draper’s history with injuries

Draper has faced significant challenges with health issues throughout his career. His latest injury has proven particularly problematic, as it forces him to withdraw from the remaining tournaments this season.

Draper’s shoulder issues, which first surfaced in 2023, have made an unwelcome return. Despite his resilient efforts to stage a comeback, Draper has wisely acknowledged the importance of listening to his body’s signals, a lesson underscored by his stellar 2025 season when he chose to prioritize his long-term health.

Draper’s stats in 2025

While Draper was sidelined for a significant portion of this year’s Grand Slam events, he still produced impressive performances earlier in the season. Despite encountering some tough patches in various tournaments, Draper remains focused on recovery, with an eye toward rejuvenating his career in the upcoming season.
