Across the college football landscape, several programs remain absent from the playoff era, carrying long histories, close calls and postseason hopes still waiting for their defining moment. <div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/coaches-with-more-losses-than-wins-in-college-football-history" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20251201_BUS_537440_Mike-Price.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="Stories of grit don’t always come wrapped in glory.
Since 2014, the college football playoff has served as the ultimate proving ground, a four-team tournament that crowns the national champion. While a small group of elite programs has secured their place nearly every year, the vast majority of FBS schools remain on the outside looking in.

This stringent exclusivity defines a new hierarchy in the sport. Some have hovered near contention, fueled by strong stretches that hinted at a possible jump. Others have navigated coaching changes, talent gaps or conference shifts that slowed their climb.

As the playoff expands and the landscape shifts, some programs remain notable omissions from the bracket. Their continued pursuit adds texture to every season, shaping the broader rhythm of a sport built on long cycles of hope and resurgence.

Troy Trojans

Troy Trojans (Source: Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Troy’s football story has been one of gradual ascent. The Trojans moved into the FBS ranks in the early 2000s and steadily carved out respectability through conference titles and bowl game appearances.

Despite a strong Sun Belt presence and multiple seasons above .500, including an 11-win campaign in 2022 that earned a CFP ranking for the first time in program history, Troy has never cracked the College Football Playoff field.

Their résumé typically shines within mid-major circles, but has lacked the combination of top-tier wins and conference championship clout the CFP committee prioritizes.

While Troy boasts historical highlights, like going ranked in the CFP poll and capturing Sun Belt hardware, consistent scheduling against elite Power 5 competition remains limited. That contrast underscores why their name is absent from the CFP brackets: strong regional success hasn’t yet translated into signature résumé components needed for a Playoff bid.

Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State Wildcats (Source: Peter Aiken/Getty Images)

Kansas State’s football lineage is full of gritty, combative teams that repeatedly contested Big 12 powerhouses, but the Wildcats have never punched their ticket to the CFP. Under long-time coach Bill Snyder, K-State stunned opponents through disciplined defense and methodical offense across multiple decades.

Yet, even in seasons with double-digit wins and major rankings, they never secured the marquee résumé shift that turns good into Playoff-worthy. The Wildcats’ absence from the CFP isn’t from lack of tradition, K-State regularly vies for division crowns and has beaten ranked foes, but timing and conference chaos often conspired against them.

In high-stakes seasons, a late loss or tiebreaker scenario pushed them out of the elite bracket that the selection committee favors. That persistent narrow miss has kept Manhattan’s purple program waiting on a breakthrough postseason moment.

Florida Gators

Florida Gators (Source: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)

Florida is one of college football’s historical blue bloods, with a résumé that includes multiple national championships long before the playoff era. Yet the CFP, inaugurated in 2014, has eluded the Gators.

Despite competing in the powerhouse SEC, arguably the sport’s deepest conference, Florida often found itself on the wrong side of key late-season outcomes or swept up in the league’s brutal gauntlet of ranked opponents.

The Gators’ legacy includes Heisman winners and playoff-era bowl berths, but their playoff absence highlights the razor-thin margins of modern college football.

In seasons where the SEC champion was clear, Florida frequently fell just short, its strong campaign undermined by a lone loss or a pivotal defeat to a conference rival. That dynamic has kept them out of the CFP spotlight, even as they remain a marquee program with championship aspirations.

Houston Cougars

Houston Cougars (Source: Brian Blanco/Getty Images)

Houston has long lived on the fringes of elite contention. The Cougars have produced memorable seasons, swaggered through American Athletic Conference play, and delivered strong bowl performances and in 2025, they sit highly ranked and bowl-bound again.

Yet, historically, their path into the CFP has been blocked by perceptions of strength of schedule and the comparative weight given to Power 5 conference resumes.

Houston’s program blends longtime grit with flashes of breakout promise. They’ve won bowls and competed under challenging circumstances, including conference shifts and roster turnover.

Each season they flirt with national relevance, but the CFP committee’s criteria, conference championships, marquee victories, and sustained rank, have kept the Cougars just outside that elite 12-team bracket.

Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M Aggies (Source: Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

Texas A&M’s narrative is unique among this list: after generations without a CFP bid, the Aggies in 2025 secured their first College Football Playoff appearance, finishing 11-1 and earning a berth in the expanded 12-team field.

This milestone came amid SEC powerhouses and marked a program shift from perennial regional contender to genuine national title threat. Before this breakthrough, A&M’s story was familiar: strong seasons undermined by close defeats or a missed conference championship opportunity, factors that kept them on the outside looking in.

Their 2025 entry reflects both the evolving landscape of the CFP and years of investment in coaching and recruiting. While they now have made it, their long playoff drought underscores how elusive that goal once was.

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (Source: Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images)

Louisiana’s rise from a regional program to a Sun Belt contender has been striking over the past decade. The Ragin’ Cajuns have notched multiple double-digit win seasons under coaches like Billy Napier, cultivating a winning culture and regular bowl game invitations, but still never cracked the CFP field.

Their closest flirtation with Playoff relevance came during the 2020 season, when a pivotal late loss to Coastal Carolina dashed hopes of an improbable New Year’s Six impact that could have thrust them into CFP conversation.

Despite posting competitive records and briefly appearing in CFP rankings, Louisiana’s résumé hasn’t offered the résumé juice, wins over Power Five opponents or a marquee conference title, typically necessary for Playoff bids. Still, success in Lafayette demonstrates a program on the rise, one that has challenged traditional Group of Five assumptions even without a “big stage” playoff moment.

NC State Wolfpack

NC State Wolfpack (Source: David Jensen/Getty Images)

North Carolina State’s football journey through the CFP era has been one of steady competence but narrow margins. Under long-time head coach Dave Doeren, the Wolfpack rarely fell below mediocrity, generally posting winning seasons and staying competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

However, consistent success didn’t cross into contender territory, NC State has yet to compile the signature résumé that attracts Playoff consideration. Their 2021 campaign offered perhaps the clearest near-miss: early ACC losses and a string of narrow defeats kept the Wolfpack behind more decorated league rivals.

That pattern, disciplined but not quite elite, encapsulates NC State’s CFP drought. They’re a program capable of disruption on any given Saturday, yet the structure of the ACC and timing of key losses have repeatedly nudged them just outside the playoff perimeter.

BYU Cougars

BYU Cougars (Source: Chris Gardner/Getty Images)

Brigham Young University etched its name into college football lore as a dominant independent in the pre-CFP era. Since joining the Big 12, however, the Cougars have experienced both resurgence and frustration. Multiple seasons have flirted with playoff relevance: BYU appeared in CFP rankings several times and compiled strong records, yet no CFP appearances are on their résumé.

The Cougars’ 2025 campaign typified this dichotomy, an impressive win total and top-15 CFP ranking, but still just outside the final cut, and a bowl spot instead of a playoff bid. Their strength lies in consistent competitiveness, but the Big 12 gauntlet, deep with nationally ranked squads, has kept BYU chasing rather than entering the postseason’s elite tier.

USC Trojans

USC Trojans (Source: Luke Hales/Getty Images)

USC’s college football pedigree is undisputed: multiple national championships and decades of top recruits define its history. Yet in the CFP era, the Trojans have never translated that legacy into a playoff berth.

Several seasons, especially 2022 when an injury to star quarterback Caleb Williams loomed large, brought USC tantalizingly close. Had a few swings gone the other way, that squad might have slipped into the CFP field over peers with similar records.

Now entrenched in the Big Ten, USC’s path forward blends traditional fan expectations with the harsh reality of modern playoff criteria: conference titles and high rankings matter more than historical resonance. Despite multiple seasons with strong national profiles, the Trojans remain an iconic program still chasing its first CFP qualification.

WKU Hilltoppers

WKU Hilltoppers (Source: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

Western Kentucky’s climb from FCS to FBS prominence is one of the more captivating smaller-school narratives in college football. Since their rise to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2007, the Hilltoppers have engineered several winning seasons and captured conference crowns, yet none of those efforts have resulted in a CFP bid.

Their nearest brush with wide-scale national attention came in 2015 with a 12-2 record and a Conference USA title, but in an era when one-loss resumes from the Group of Five were seldom considered for playoff inclusion, even that standout season fell short.

WKU’s story is emblematic of many mid-level programs: excellence at the local level, strong fan followings and bowl appearances, but still waiting for that moment of breakout that elevates them into the playoff conversation.

UCF Knights

UCF Knights (Source: Julio Aguilar/Getty Images)

University of Central Florida’s roller-coaster run through the CFP era has been one of the most talked-about trajectories among Group of Five programs. UCF’s 2017 perfect season and self-declared national title marked a seismic moment in how non-Power Five success was perceived.

Yet despite compiling wins and drawing CFP rankings in multiple seasons, the Knights never secured a playoff berth, even with arguments on their behalf in expansion years.

Their combination of high win totals and All-American talent suggested a playoff-worthy résumé more than once, but the timing of losses and the committee’s weighing of conference strength left UCF on the outside looking in. It remains a cautionary tale of how close excellence can fall short in the College Football Playoff era.

Marshall Thundering Herd

Marshall Thundering Herd (Source: Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

Marshall has long been a fixture in the FBS landscape, and while its heyday included dominant run-as in Conference USA, the CFP era hasn’t produced a berth for the Thundering Herd.

They’ve made consistent bowl appearances and even flirted with national prominence at times, but scheduling and exposure against Power Five opponents has limited their ability to build a résumé compelling enough for playoff inclusion.

The closest Marshall came to playoff contention came during strong seasons like 2013–15, when they racked up wins and won conference titles but the strength of schedule and late losses kept them outside the top 12. In a sport where perception and signature wins matter as much as record, Marshall remains in that frustrating limbo common to many Group of Five programs.

Air Force Falcons

Air Force Falcons (Source: Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)

Air Force’s brand of disciplined, run-oriented football has delivered surprising wins and several double-digit win seasons in the CFP era, yet a playoff bid has never materialized. They’ve built consistent success, including an 8-0 start in 2023, but even that kind of momentum wasn’t going to vault them into playoff consideration because of a schedule light on Power Five tests.

The Falcons’ identity, rooted in the service academy style — quick tempo, ground attack, and disciplined defense — often confounds opponents and fans alike. Still, that same stylistic niche has left them on the outside of CFP discourse: without marquee wins against elite teams, it’s hard to break into an expanded 12-team field.

Toledo Rockets

Toledo Rockets (Source: Andrew Weber/Getty Images)

Toledo’s football program has been the epitome of consistency over the last two decades. The Rockets haven’t had a losing season since 2005, regularly winning the Mid-American Conference and producing high-octane offenses.

Despite that infectious success, a CFP spot has remained elusive: there simply isn’t enough strength of schedule or marquee victories to push an 11-win MAC champion into national championship equations.

Toledo’s best shot at playoff relevance came in 2017 when an 11-win season and MAC title raised eyebrows, but a bowl loss underscored the gap between Group of Five glory and playoff calculus. It’s a reminder that in the CFP era, consistent winning isn’t always enough without those eye-catching signatures against power conference foes.

San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State Aztecs (Source: Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

San Diego State football has been one of the most quietly successful programs west of the Power Five, especially under long-time coach Rocky Long. Between 2015 and 2021, the Aztecs notched five ten-win seasons and regularly challenged for Mountain West titles.

Yet even with that sustained excellence, their CFP drought persists — in part because the playoff selection committee gravitates toward teams from conferences viewed as stronger or more competitive.

Their 2021 Mountain West season was solid, but a midseason loss and a tough conference title game performance kept them outside the playoff picture. San Diego State’s achievements are undeniable, but they illustrate a frustrating truth for many mid-major programs: winning consistently doesn’t automatically translate into playoff consideration if the strength-of-schedule dial isn’t turned way up.

Utah Utes

Utah Utes (Source: Chris Gardner/Getty Images)

Utah presents a compelling case study: one of the few programs on this list that almost made the CFP. The Utes resurrected their national profile after joining the Pac-12, earning respect as one of the few Group of Five–turned–Power Five programs to threaten elite status.

They nearly punched a ticket in 2019, rolling to an 11–1 record and generating debate about their playoff worthiness. A loss in the Pac-12 Championship Game, however, dropped them short.

Despite having one of the highest all-time presences in the CFP rankings without a playoff berth, Utah’s résumé was always vulnerable to a couple of untimely losses in seasons when the CFP committee prioritized undefeated or one-loss champions from traditional power conferences. That history highlights how razor-thin margins separate a Utes playoff run from another successful season.

Memphis Tigers

Memphis Tigers (Source: Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Memphis has been one of the most electrifying Group of Five teams in recent memory, capable of putting up points in bunches and giving Power Five foes fits. Through the CFP era, the Tigers have appeared in the committee’s rankings multiple times, with flashes of postseason buzz at several points. But consistent questions about strength of schedule and late-season setbacks have kept them just outside the CFP cut line.

Memphis’s most memorable periods came during seasons where explosive offenses made bowls fun and packed stadiums — yet that same flash seldom produced the suite of wins needed for playoff consideration. In the unforgiving calculus of the CFP, style points matter, but they rarely outweigh a tougher slate of Power Five matchups.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State Nittany Lions (Source: Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Penn State embodies one of the odder footnotes in the CFP era: a storied Power Five program that almost reached the playoff several times, but never quite crossed the finish line.

Despite high win totals and strong Big Ten campaigns, including multiple seasons with just one or two losses, the Nittany Lions have been edged out by elite rivals in championship games or tiebreaker scenarios that kept them just outside CFP selection.

Their name finally cracked the expanded playoff field in the 2024–25 season, marking the program’s first CFP appearance and underscoring how elusive that milestone had been for a perennial national contender.

Penn State’s long playoff drought before 2024 reflects not a lack of quality, but the razor-thin margins of the CFP era: a harrowing loss here, a late-season stumble there, and suddenly a Big Ten contender watches the playoff field on TV instead of taking the field.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa Hawkeyes (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Iowa’s program has long been synonymous with toughness and consistency in the Big Ten, but that very identity has also made their CFP drought more notable. Year after year, the Hawkeyes have logged solid records and delivered disciplined football that frustrates opponents — yet they’ve lacked the signature résumé highlight or undefeated campaign that shakes the playoff committee.

In the CFP context, Iowa often sits in that frustrating “too good to ignore, too flawed to include” space: solid wins peppered with late conference losses or games decided by a few points.

For a program that routinely finishes seasons ranked and competes in one of the sport’s toughest leagues, the absence of a CFP appearance becomes its own kind of story — one of consistency without postseason breakthrough.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

Oklahoma State Cowboys (Source: Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Oklahoma State has quietly compiled an impressive win total throughout the CFP era, often rivaling or surpassing traditional playoff contenders in overall success. Yet for all their regular-season punch and Big 12 competitiveness, the Cowboys have yet to convert that into a CFP bid.

There have been moments, most notably around the 2021 season, where Oklahoma State possessed a résumé that might have earned a 12-team CFP berth under slightly different circumstances. But a combination of key losses and a conference crowded with high-profile rivals kept them watching from the outside.

Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin Badgers (Source: John Fisher/Getty Images)

Wisconsin feels like the quintessential “power program without a CFP berth.” Across multiple seasons, especially under coaches like Paul Chryst and Luke Fickell, the Badgers posted strong records and found themselves in position to challenge for playoff contention — only to be derailed late or caught on the wrong side of the committee’s nuances.

One of the most talked-about near-misses came in 2017, when an unbeaten Wisconsin team lost the Big Ten championship in dramatic fashion and watched a likely playoff spot evaporate with it.

It’s that kind of heartbreak, so close yet just out of reach, that defines Wisconsin’s CFP history: a respected, tough program lacking only the final signature campaign to vault them into college football’s newest postseason landscape.

Boise State Broncos

Boise State Broncos (Source: Loren Orr/Getty Images)

Boise State is one of the most successful Group of Five programs of the past quarter-century, boasting a haul of double-digit win seasons and memorable wins that once made them household names.

In the CFP era, though, the Broncos’ résumé hasn’t drawn enough committee attention to secure a playoff berth — despite coming closer than many fans realize. Notably, Boise State did make the expanded CFP field in the 2024–25 season, earning a berth after capturing the Mountain West and showing top-15 form during the regular year.

This appearance, while historic for the program, also underscores how rare Boise State’s CFP inclusion has been compared to their sustained excellence dating back decades. Before that milestone, seasons like 2019 — where they finished 12–1 — hinted at what might have been under an earlier or more expansive playoff model.

Appalachian State Mountaineers

Appalachian State Mountaineers (Source: Eakin Howard/Getty Images)

Appalachian State’s rise from FCS powerhouse to consistent Sun Belt contender has been one of the defining stories of modern college football. Since moving to the FBS as the CFP era began, the Mountaineers have regularly posted strong records and multiple 10+ win seasons — yet none produced a résumé eye-catching enough for CFP selection.

Their most plausible moment to push for consideration came in 2019, when a Sun Belt title and convincing wins suggested a Group of Five contender. But a late points-differential loss in conference play kept Appalachian State outside the top tier, reminding fans and analysts alike that great seasons don’t always translate into playoff bids without signature victories.

Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, securing their eighth win of the season.
It wasn’t their best performance, that’s for sure. However, a small detail made the USC Trojans hold on for the win at home against the Iowa Hawkeyes. In fact, it’s something even more important—something head coach Lincoln Riley has been trying to instill in this prestigious program.

Riley joined the Trojans in 2022 and has gradually begun building a work culture rooted in resilience—something that is clearly paying off. After the victory over Iowa, the head coach revealed that it was something he noticed during his team’s comeback.

“A culture win right there, if there ever was one,” he said, per Kendell Hollowell of Sports Illustrated. “We didn’t play very good football in the first half. Our team’s resilience, the response at halftime. We brought the guys up right away when we came in at half, which we don’t typically do. And you can tell from the look in their eye that they knew we didn’t play our best and we could make a run at this thing.”

The coach was impressed by his players’ mindset during this tough matchup, which ultimately ended with them emerging victorious by a final score of 26-21. “This team’s resilience, whether it’s a tough stretch of plays, whether it’s losing some players here or there throughout the year and obviously having some in this game.

Makai Lemon #6 of the Southern California Trojans.

“We just keep coming and we have all year. That’s a big-time team win. All three sides were really good in the second half and to come back and get that done was a really cool feeling. Just a great moment during the Coliseum for the whole program.”

Is USC a serious title contender?

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/college-football-traditions-that-live-forever" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20250911_BUS_490357_Penn-State-The-white-out-1.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="The echoes of marching bands, midnight chants, and timeless rituals carry through packed stadiums—where college football’s heartbeat is felt long before kickoff.
The USC Trojans are battling to keep their long-shot hopes of reaching the College Football National Championship Game alive, but the path is incredibly crowded and challenging. With major contenders like Texas A&M, Georgia, and Ohio State ahead in the rankings, the route to the final four is narrow.

USC not only needs to win out but also requires significant help from upsets across the country. For them to make the final, they must demonstrate dominant performances immediately to impress the selection committee.

The season’s finale

The USC Trojans are bracing for a brutal final stretch to their regular season. The team must navigate two massive rivalry matchups: a challenging road trip to face Oregon in Eugene followed by a highly anticipated home clash against UCLA Bruins.

These two games will define the Trojans’ year, as they will need peak performances from their offense and a resilient defensive effort to emerge victorious and secure a strong bowl placement.

Following a solid home victory over the Michigan Wolverines, Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans may head into their upcoming games with a significant absence.
Much of the success this season for the USC Trojans has clearly been driven by the strength of their offense. Unfortunately for Lincoln Riley’s team, one of Jayden Maiava’s most reliable targets could miss a string of crucial games in the near future.

During last night’s big win over the Michigan Wolverines, Waymond Jordan suffered a significant injury to one of his ankles. Early speculation suggests he could be sidelined for several games, dealing a blow to the Trojans’ offense.

The news was reported by college football insider Matt Zenitz, who stated on his official X account (formerly Twitter) that the talented running back will undergo further testing to determine the full extent of the injury.

“USC standout running back Waymond Jordan suffered an ankle injury last night vs. Michigan that’s expected to sideline him at the very least multiple games, sources tell me and @chris_hummer.”

Jayden Maiava #14 of the USC Trojans hands the ball off to Waymond Jordan.

The insider also added: “Undergoing further testing today. The 5-1 Trojans face Notre Dame next week.” If the injury is confirmed, it would be a major blow to one of the most aggressive offenses in the NCAAF.

Jordan’s influence on USC’s offense

The addition of running back Waymond Jordan has fundamentally reshaped the USC offense, providing a critical counterbalance that the unit desperately needed. The powerful JUCO transfer, who has quietly emerged as one of the nation’s most effective rushers with over 500 yards and five touchdowns, has established a dynamic two-man show alongside quarterback Jayden Maiava.

Jordan’s elite vision and contact balance alleviate pressure on Maiava, allowing the quarterback to operate with less scrutiny and greater freedom in Lincoln Riley’s scheme.

By establishing a potent, consistent ground threat—a rarity in recent Trojan history—Jordan and Maiava have formed a complementary duo that has USC firing on all cylinders, proving they possess the balanced attack necessary to compete for a Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff berth.

Big win over the Wolverines

The USC Trojans delivered a resounding 31-13 victory over No. 15 Michigan at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night, proving their readiness for the Big Ten.

Despite losing their top two running backs to injury, the Trojans relied on a gritty, run-heavy performance—led by walk-on phenomenon King Miller’s 158 rushing yards—to overpower the Wolverines’ highly-touted defense. Quarterback Jayden Maiava was efficient, and the defense delivered key turnovers, shutting down Michigan’s attack to secure a signature win that instantly elevates USC’s profile on the national stage.

Beneath the stadium lights, college football becomes more than a game—it’s a theater of rituals. From pre-game parades to post-game songs, traditions shape the sport’s identity across generations.

Some customs are loud and electrifying, others quietly symbolic. Each one, however, carries a story of pride, community and continuity that makes Saturdays feel unlike any other day in American sports.

Whether born from campus folklore or decades of repetition, these traditions endure. They bind players, students and fans together, creating living testaments to passion that no scoreboard can measure.

Notre Dame – “Play Like a Champion Today”

A sign with “Play Like A Champion Today” painted on it is display outside of the Notre Dame locker room.
Few college football images are more iconic than the gold helmet tap on Notre Dame’s “Play Like a Champion Today” sign. The tradition began in 1986 when head coach Lou Holtz had the sign placed at the exit of the tunnel, urging his players to internalize the program’s lofty standard. Before every home game at Notre Dame Stadium, athletes stretch out their hands to slap the sign, linking themselves with the generations of champions who came before.

Virginia Tech – “Enter Sandman”

In Blacksburg, the atmosphere before kickoff is unlike anywhere else. Since 2000, Virginia Tech has entered Lane Stadium to Metallica’s Enter Sandman, and the effect is spine-tingling. More than 65,000 Hokies fans leap in unison as the ground shakes, creating one of the most intimidating entrances in all of college sports. Even visiting players have admitted it gives them goosebumps before the ball is ever snapped.

Penn State – The white out

Penn State’s white out (Source: Penn State Athletics)

What started as a one-time idea in 2004 quickly became one of the sport’s defining spectacles. During Penn State’s annual White Out, Beaver Stadium becomes a blinding sea of white shirts, towels, and pom-poms as over 100,000 fans transform the venue into a snowstorm of intimidation. The White Out is usually reserved for the program’s biggest home matchup of the year, and it’s widely considered one of the hardest environments for visiting teams.

Wisconsin – “Jump Around”

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Wisconsin's " jump="" around"="" vs.="" #19="" penn="" state"="" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SoXHXLYTAgs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen="">

At Camp Randall Stadium, the third quarter always ends with controlled chaos. Since 1998, Wisconsin has blasted House of Pain’s Jump Around over the loudspeakers, and the effect is a synchronized stadium earthquake. Students, alumni, and even players on the sideline bounce to the beat, turning the game into a party and giving the Badgers a surge of energy heading into the final quarter.

Ohio State – Script Ohio and dotting the “i”

<iframe loading="lazy" title="The Ohio State University Marching Band: Script Ohio and Dotting the " i""="" width="500" height="281" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oXsBWuDNNIc?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen="">

No marching band tradition is as revered as Ohio State’s Script Ohio. First performed in 1936, the Ohio State Marching Band spells out the school’s name in flowing script across the field. The climax comes when a sousaphone player ceremonially “dots the i,” a moment of pure pageantry that is greeted with thunderous applause. Being chosen as the “i-dotter” is a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Oklahoma – The sooner schooner

Oklahoma’s sooner schooner (Source: Sooner Sports)

Powered by ponies named Boomer and Sooner, the Sooner Schooner is a replica of the Conestoga wagons used by settlers in Oklahoma’s Land Run. After every touchdown in Norman, the wagon makes a victory lap around the field, bringing the program’s frontier roots to life. Fans cheer wildly as the schooner kicks up dirt—a symbol of the Sooners’ pioneering spirit.

Texas A&M – Midnight yell practice

Texas A&M’s midnight yell practice (Source: Student Affairs – TAMU – Texas A&M University)

At Texas A&M, game day starts long before kickoff. Thousands of Aggies pack into Kyle Field at midnight before every home game for the Midnight Yell Practice. Instead of cheerleaders, Texas A&M has “yell leaders” who guide the crowd through songs, chants, and stories. The event builds unity among students and alumni while ensuring the 12th Man is at full volume the next day.

Colorado – Ralphie’s run

Ralphie’s run (Source: University of Colorado Boulder)

Perhaps no entrance in football is more breathtaking than Ralphie’s Run. Before kickoff in Boulder, handlers guide a live buffalo named Ralphie around the field at full sprint, leading the team out of the tunnel. The sheer size and speed of the animal, paired with the roar of Folsom Field, creates a uniquely Colorado spectacle that symbolizes the wild energy of the Buffaloes.

Iowa – The hawkeye wave

The hawkeye wave (Source: Iowa Hawkeyes)

Introduced in 2017, the Hawkeye Wave quickly became one of the sport’s most touching traditions. At the end of the first quarter in Kinnick Stadium, the entire crowd turns to wave at the children watching from the top floors of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, which overlooks the field. Players and referees join in, creating a moment of connection that transcends the game.

West Virginia – “Take Me Home, Country Roads”

When the Mountaineers secure a victory, the stadium transforms into a sing-along. Since the 1970s, John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads has been the anthem of West Virginia football. Players, arm in arm with fans, belt out the chorus as a celebration of state pride. The tradition embodies the bond between team and community in Morgantown.

Alabama – “Rammer Jammer” cheer

In Tuscaloosa, winning is expected, and so is the celebration that follows. As the Crimson Tide close in on victory, the crowd roars with the “Rammer Jammer” cheer: “Hey [opponent], we just beat the hell out of you!” Once considered too brash, it has become a staple of Bryant-Denny Stadium, a boastful exclamation mark on Alabama dominance.

Florida – “Two Bits” cheer

Florida’s Two Bits cheer (Source: Florida Gators)

For decades, George Edmondson Jr., better known as “Mr. Two Bits,” led Florida fans in a pregame cheer that became synonymous with Gator football. Starting in 1949, he would appear in the stands wearing his trademark yellow shirt and orange-and-blue tie, shouting: “Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar, all for the Gators, stand up and holler!” Today, a selected alumnus or celebrity carries on the ritual, keeping Mr. Two Bits’ spirit alive.

LSU – Night in Death Valley

LSU’s night in Death Valley (Source: LSU Sports)

Tiger Stadium at night is one of the most intimidating venues in sports. Before every Saturday night kickoff, a booming announcement declares: “It is Saturday night in Death Valley!” The proclamation electrifies the 100,000 fans in Baton Rouge, where the noise levels regularly register on seismographs. Night games at LSU are the stuff of legend.

Army-Navy – Alma maters

Army-Navy (Source: U.S. Army)

Few traditions embody sportsmanship like the postgame ritual at the Army-Navy Game. No matter who wins, both teams gather in front of the cadets and midshipmen to sing each school’s alma mater. The losing team sings first, followed by the victors, creating a poignant reminder that they are all serving a higher cause beyond football.

Michigan – The big house banner

Michigan’s Go Blue banner (Source: MVictors)

The Wolverines’ entrance into Michigan Stadium is punctuated by one of college football’s most enduring visuals: players leaping to touch the maize-and-blue banner that reads “Go Blue”. First introduced in 1962, the banner has come to represent unity, pride, and the legacy of one of the sport’s most storied programs.

Clemson – Howard’s rock and the hill run

Howard’s rock (Source: Clemson Tigers)

At Clemson, players gather atop the east end zone hill, where they rub Howard’s Rock—a gift from a former coach—before charging down the steep hill into Memorial Stadium. Known as “the most exciting 25 seconds in college football,” the ritual fuses superstition, spectacle, and adrenaline in a way that no other entrance can match.

Georgia – Uga the bulldog

Georgia’s mascot poses in front of Georgia Bulldog fans after their game.
Since 1956, Georgia’s beloved live mascot, Uga, has patrolled the sidelines in Athens. The white English bulldog, always dressed in a red jersey, has become one of the most recognizable mascots in college sports. Each Uga descends from the same lineage, cementing the tradition as a family legacy and a centerpiece of Bulldog pride.

Tennessee – Vol navy

Vol navy in Tennessee (Source: Tennessee Athletics)

On fall Saturdays, the Tennessee River becomes an orange flotilla. Hundreds of boats, from fishing skiffs to luxury yachts, dock outside Neyland Stadium as part of the Vol Navy tradition. Fans tailgate on the water, then head inside to cheer on the Volunteers, making Knoxville one of the most unique game-day destinations in the country.

South Carolina – “2001: A Space Odyssey” entrance

Since 1983, South Carolina’s entrance has been set to the soaring notes of Also Sprach Zarathustra, better known as the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The music builds as players storm the field, sending shivers down spines in Williams-Brice Stadium. It’s theatrical, dramatic, and distinctly South Carolina.

USC – Traveler and Tommy trojan

Traveler and Tommy trojan (Source: USC Today – University of Southern Califoria)

Few spectacles rival the sight of USC’s majestic white horse, Traveler, galloping across the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Ridden by a costumed figure representing Tommy Trojan, Traveler charges onto the field before kickoff and after every touchdown. The display links modern-day USC with its Trojan warrior identity.

Nebraska – Tunnel walk

Nebraska’s tunnel walk (Source: Huskers)

At Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, anticipation builds as the Cornhuskers prepare to take the field. Fans press against the glass to watch their team emerge, creating one of the most spine-tingling moments in the sport.

Ole Miss – The Grove

The Grove (Source: Ole Miss Athletics)

Game day in Oxford begins not in the stadium but in The Grove, a 10-acre shaded park on campus. For decades, Ole Miss fans have set up elaborate tailgate spreads with chandeliers, silverware, and Southern hospitality. The Grove is less about rowdiness and more about pageantry, making it the most famous tailgating tradition in America.

Auburn – Toomer’s corner

Toomer’s corner in Auburn (Source: On The Lawn – Auburn University)

Whenever Auburn wins, fans flock to the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue, better known as Toomer’s Corner. They roll the oak trees with streams of toilet paper, turning the area into a white forest of celebration. It’s a quirky but beloved ritual that survived even after the original oaks were poisoned in 2010 and later replanted.

Florida State – Chief Osceola and Renegade

Chief Osceola and his horse Renagade wait on the field in 2005.
Before every game in Tallahassee, a student dressed as the Seminole warrior Osceola rides a horse named Renegade to midfield. With thousands watching, he thrusts a flaming spear into the turf, igniting the crowd. The ritual, created in 1978 with the blessing of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, is one of the sport’s most dramatic pregame moments.

Arkansas – “Woo Pig Sooie”

Arkansas fans (Source: University of Arkansas)

The Razorbacks’ battle cry is unlike any other in college football. At Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, fans chant “Woo Pig Sooie!” in unison, raising their arms in a wave before bringing them down with the final “Sooie.” It’s a sound that can only mean Arkansas football, echoing across the Ozarks on fall Saturdays.

In the sprawling saga of college football, a handful of programs have carved out legacies that stretch far beyond the scoreboard. These institutions have become synonymous with dominance, tradition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

From the maize-and-blue mystique of Michigan to the southern swagger of Alabama, the sport’s most decorated teams have built empires on talent and a knack for rewriting history. Their stories are stitched into the fabric of Saturdays across America.

But greatness isn’t just measured in wins. It’s found in Heisman moments, packed stadiums, and decades of sustained brilliance. As the dust settles on another season, the numbers begin to speak—and some names echo louder than others.

25. Grambling State Tigers

Grambling State Tigers (Source: Football – Grambling State University Athletics)

Robinson’s tenure from 1941 to 1997 resulted in 408 wins, 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships, and 9 Black College National Championships.

His influence extended beyond the field, producing over 80 NFL players, including Doug Williams, the first African American quarterback to win a Super Bowl. The Tigers’ rich tradition continues to inspire, with the Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium serving as a testament to their enduring legacy.

24. Clemson Tigers

When will Watkins return to the court?

The severe injury suffered by JuJu Watkins last night came as a cold shower for the USC Trojans program. The team’s biggest star ended up suffering the worst possible injury, one that will sideline her from the court for an extended period.

The question everyone is asking now is, when could Watkins return to the court? While it’s somewhat unpredictable to give a definitive answer, recovery typically takes between 6 and 9 months, assuming everything progresses normally.

Jalen Hurts crowned Super Bowl LIX champion with the Philadelphia Eagles and USC Trojans coach, Lincoln Riley, reflected on his time with the Oklahoma Sooners.
Last weekend, Jalen Hurts not only became Super Bowl LIX champion but was also named MVP of the game. His remarkable talent began to take shape during his college football days, where he had standout performances with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners. Lincoln Riley, now the head coach of the USC Trojans, had already begun to see the immense potential in him back then.

In comments published on SI.com, Riley spoke in a 2022 press conference about the technical skills he had already seen in Hurts during his time in the NCAAF. The current Super Bowl champion joined the Sooners in his final year of college after transferring from Alabama.

“The question from every team was how do you project this guy,” Riley started. “I told them he’s gonna be a really good player, he’s got a pro mentality.”

In addition, the current Trojans head coach emphasized that his time with Hurts helped shape him as a professional, given the strong bond they built during their time at USC. Hurts‘ arrival in the NFL was definitely something that had to happen.

“Our time together was short. It was fun.
Hurts praises the defensive work of the Georgia program

Although Jalen Hurts spent his college years first with the Alabama Crimson Tide and later with the Oklahoma Sooners, when it comes to highlighting something that helped his team secure the Super Bowl title, it was none other than the defensive work developed by another program—the Georgia Bulldogs.

Many of Hurts’ current teammates on the Eagles came from there and perfected this aspect in the best possible way, which proved crucial in countering the attacks of Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs.

“I think a big part of it has to do with the Georgia background on defense, you know,” Hurts stated, via On3. “And I think that starts with Nakobe Dean and all those guys that were able to play ball in college together and bring their ways to the league.

The talented USC Trojans quarterback, Miller Moss, has already decided where he will play next season in the NCAAF.
The USC Trojans‘ season in the NCAAF was certainly not what was expected at the start. The team, led by Lincoln Riley, had an uneven performance and failed to make it to the playoffs. Miller Moss, the team’s quarterback and leader, has now made a decision regarding his future in the league.

As such, Arch carries a surname that has become synonymous with excellence and tradition in the sport. Check out all about the legacy.

The Trojans finished the regular season with a record of six wins and six losses, far from the contenders for the next stage. Despite this, they will have the opportunity to close out the year by facing Texas A&M in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl.

In a time when many players are opting to seek new opportunities through the transfer portal, USC was no exception, and the player choosing to make a change is none other than QB Miller Moss. According to College Football insider Pete Thamel, Moss will be wearing the colors of Louisville for the upcoming season.

“Former USC quarterback Miller Moss is committing to Louisville, sources told ESPN. Moss is one of the most coveted players in the NCAA transfer portal, as he’s No. 10 overall and the No. 3 quarterback in the ESPN Portal Rankings,” Thamel stated via his X account @PeteThamel.

During his time at USC, Moss accumulated 3,469 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, with a completion rate of 65.9%. In the 2024 season, Moss passed for 2,555 yards and 18 touchdowns over the course of nine games as the starting quarterback.

Johnson will not be joining USC after all

The transfer portal in NCAAF can undoubtedly be a double-edged sword. Just ask coach Lincoln Riley, who, until Thursday, thought he would have the talented cornerback Chasen Johnson in his ranks, but that will no longer be the case.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="SEO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/arch-manning-net-worth" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20241116_BUS_273656_Arch-Manning-1.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="With a family of legends and unique talent, Arch Manning is ready to make his mark on football. His time as QB for the Texas Longhorns hasn't gone unnoticed, nor has his growing fortune. Check out his current net worth.

So what happened then? Johnson had committed to join the Trojans for the upcoming season from the UCF Knights, but at the last moment, the talented player decided to join the SMU Mustangs instead.

Johnson is currently ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 12 cornerback in the transfer portal. Last season, he recorded 18 tackles and two pass deflections for the UCF Knights.

What’s next for the USC Trojans after an irregular season?

The USC Trojans’ underwhelming season led to them missing out on playoff opportunities. Despite this, Coach Riley’s team will have one final game: they will face Texas A&M on Friday, December 27, in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl.
