Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby could meet for the last time as the Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins, and no one wants to miss the action.
The speculation surrounding Alex Ovechkin‘s future is driving ticket prices up as the Washington Capitals host Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in their 2025-26 NHL regular season finale. The stage is set for a memorable matchup in what might be the last time “The Great 8” and “Sid the Kid” meet on the ice.

Ovechkin and Crosby have marked a generation of hockey players, and will continue to do so for ages. It felt like their on-ice rivalry would go on forever, but the finish line is now closer than ever. The Penguins and Capitals will face-off in a home-and-home back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday in what could be the last time the two icons go head to head.

Sunday’s showdown will be even more special, as it might be the last time Ovechkin ever plays a game in Washington—the only city he’s ever called home in his 21-season career. As a result, everybody wants to have a seat at Capital One Arena, and prices are going through the roof.

According to Axios, the average get-in price on third-party resale platforms (such as TickPick) is set at $377. That is well above the $102 average price for home games in the Nation’s Capital City. As reported by this source, the price has surpassed the previous peak of $319, which was set on April 10, 2025—the first home game after Ovechkin seized the all-time goals record in the NHL. This time around, the occasion is even more special.

Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.

Is Ovechkin retiring?

Ovechkin recently admitted he will take his sweet time during the summer to make a decision on his future. The Capitals’ captain will turn 41 before the 2026–27 campaign. Since capturing the all-time goals record in the NHL, there isn’t really a clear goal for him to go after.

After all, he has accomplished everything any player could ever dream of. If he decides to call it a career, he can walk away from the rink with his chin held high. Fans in Washington wish he could play forever, though. Needless to say, whenever he retires, a statue in his honor will be erected in the City of Monuments.

Ovechkin’s stats against Crosby’s Penguins

So far in their careers, Ovechkin and Crosby have met 74 times. When the 2025–26 NHL season comes to an end, the total number of games will be at 76—unless either one of them misses one of their upcoming bouts. Ovechkin has scored 38 times against the Penguins when Crosby is in the lineup.

When adding the games Crosby didn’t play in, Ovechkin has 42 goals against Pittsburgh. Over the weekend, he’ll hope to add to his total. Perhaps it will be the last time the two will meet. After all, Ovechkin only gets one chance to make a last impression.

The New York Rangers handed the Washington Capitals their worst defeat of the 2025-26 NHL season, and the timing couldn't have been any worse for the team in the nation's capital.
The New York Rangers look possessed to end the 2025-26 NHL season. Playing a youngster-filled lineup, Mike Sullivan and company have finally found something that works in The Big Apple. For the Washington Capitals, though, the 8-1 defeat feels like a playoff-elimination loss, and it may as well be that. Their odds to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs took a considerable hit after the defeat at Madison Square Garden.

According to MoneyPuck, the Capitals had a 23% chance of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs before the puck dropped at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” However, the Capitals couldn’t make the most of their opportunity. Instead, they were blown out of the water by the young and hungry squad in New York. As a result, MoneyPuck now gives Washington a 6.3% chance of making the postseason.

Considering their odds entering Easter Sunday, the 8–1 blowout on Broadway reduced the Capitals’ chances by approximately 73%. Put another way, the Capitals have now seen nearly three-quarters of their chances vanish into thin air because of the thrashing at the hands of the Blueshirts.

Worst defeat in a while for Capitals

Losing to a divisional opponent never feels good. Doing so by a seven-goal margin to a team that’s been eliminated from playoff contention for a long time, though, stings much worse. The Washington Capitals hadn’t allowed eight goals in a regular-season outing since the 2005–06 NHL season.

Will Cuylle scored a hat trick in the 8-1 win

The 8–1 defeat in Manhattan brought longtime fans flashbacks to the 7–0 loss to the Rangers in the 2010–11 campaign at Madison Square Garden. If there’s a silver lining—some may call it delusion—it’s that Washington ended up making the playoffs that season as a wild card. Perhaps the Capitals will have the same luck this time around. However, the outlook is far from promising.

Playoff race in the Eastern Conference

The Caps (87 points) are three points out of the last wild-card spot, with one more game played than the Flyers (90 points), Senators (90), Red Wings (88), and Blue Jackets (88). Matt Roy said it best: “We just need four wins in the next four games,” the Capitals’ blueliner said, via NHL.com. It sounds simple and comes out cleanly from the players’ mouths. Like most things, it’s easier said than done.

For a team that lost 7–3 and 8–1 in its last two road games (against non-playoff teams) and is set to play three road games in its final four, it shows just how steep of a climb the Capitals are facing. Aside from a showdown with the Blue Jackets, the Caps won’t face direct opponents in their playoff race.

Capitals don’t control their destiny

Even if Washington wins out, its fate isn’t in its hands. The Capitals could pull off an incredible finish to the season, but it may all be in vain. Perhaps they are destined to swim all the way to the shore, only to perish there.

If that happens, the Capitals may look back at this defeat in New York City. In the concrete jungle where dreams are made, Washington’s playoff dream may have just been crushed to pieces.

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson reacted to the team’s shocking decision to trade longtime defenseman John Carlson ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
The Washington Capitals are still processing one of the most emotional moves of the NHL trade deadline after the organization dealt longtime defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks. Veteran forward Tom Wilson acknowledged the impact of the decision on the locker room, as the surprising trade quickly sent shockwaves through the team and its fan base.

Carlson had been a cornerstone of the franchise for more than a decade, and the deal marked the end of an era in Washington. He was a key part of the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship and one of the organization’s most consistent leaders on and off the ice.

Speaking after practice, Wilson did not hide his emotions about the trade, delivering an honest message to the team while acknowledging the reality of the NHL business. “Today sucks. It’s brutal,” Wilson said. “I’m sure there are some guys that want to cry. That’s the reality of it. Today you can cry and tomorrow you got to wake up and be a big boy and play hockey. We have to do our job.”

Wilson reflects on long partnership with Carlson

Wilson and Carlson shared the ice for most of the winger’s NHL career. Wilson was selected by Washington in the 2012 draft and debuted during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, meaning nearly every game he has played at the NHL level included Carlson as a teammate.

John Carlson #74 of the Capitals skates with the puck. Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Because of that history, Wilson admitted the change feels unfamiliar for many players inside the Capitals locker room. “It’s all I’ve ever known… There’s certain guys in the locker room that are just a north star a little bit,” Wilson said. “I never foresaw like a Capitals game without John Carlson in it.”

Capitals still focused on playoff push

Despite the emotional impact of the move, Washington’s season continues. The team remains in the playoff race in a tightly contested Eastern Conference, sitting just a few points outside a postseason position.

While the trade signals a significant shift for the organization, the Capitals will now rely on their remaining core to keep the team competitive down the stretch as they attempt to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin didn't sugarcoat his feelings after learning John Carlson was traded to the Anaheim Ducks before the NHL trade deadline
The Washington Capitals continue to dismantle the team ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and Alex Ovechkin has had enough. The captain shared the common sentiment around the locker room after team leader John Carlson was traded to the Anaheim Ducks.

Ovechkin and the Capitals are currently four points out of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the organization is seemingly waving the white flag on the season.

Watching Nic Dowd be traded to the Vegas Golden Knights sent a disheartening message to the players, but giving up Carlson to the Ducks was a massive blow that neither Ovechkin nor anyone else saw coming. Thanks to the trade, the Ducks added a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman while most of the league was asleep, including Carlson, who woke up to the news.

After hearing the news, Ovechkin dropped a blunt admission putting the front office on notice. “Alex Ovechkin said this is the saddest day of his career personally after John Carlson was traded,” as reported by NHL.com‘s Tom Gulitti. “Keep fighting. We’re still in this,” Ovechkin said to his teammates, via The Hockey News’ Sammi Silber.

Alex Ovechkin at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

Capitals on high alert

Ovechkin’s statement shouldn’t be overlooked by the organization. With much speculation around his future in the NHL, nothing can be taken for granted when it comes to “The Great 8”. Ovechkin has yet to sign a contract extension in Washington, as his five-year, $47.5 million deal (signed in 2021) is set to expire after the 2025-26 campaign.

If the Capitals miss the playoffs after separating Ovi from one of his longest-tenured teammates, the prospect of the leading scorer in NHL history leaving could become very real. Whether he would join another organization in the league or return to Russia remains to be seen, though he has admitted to plans for a return to Dynamo Moscow.

The Anaheim Ducks strengthen their roster by acquiring a Stanley Cup–winning defenseman from the Washington Capitals, adding experience and leadership ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
The Anaheim Ducks made a notable move ahead of the NHL trade deadline by acquiring veteran defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. The deal reflects Anaheim’s determination to strengthen its roster as the team pushes toward the postseason.

Carlson arrives with an impressive résumé that includes a Stanley Cup championship and more than a decade of experience in the league. The 36-year-old defenseman has continued to produce this season, recording 46 points while playing a major role on Washington’s blue line.

Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek expressed confidence in the impact Carlson can bring to the team during the final stretch of the season. “John Carlson brings leadership, character, a high hockey IQ and a presence to our lineup,” Verbeek said. according to NHL.com. “We are very excited to add a Stanley Cup winner to complement our group and make a big push down the stretch.”

Trade details and contract situation

In the trade, Anaheim sent a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft to Washington. If the Ducks fail to qualify for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, they will keep the 2026 pick and instead send their first-round selection in the 2027 draft.

John Carlson #74 of the Capitals skates with the puck. Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Carlson is currently in the final season of the eight-year, $64 million contract he signed with the Capitals in 2018. If a new deal is not reached before the offseason, the veteran defenseman could become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Carlson’s legacy in Washington

Selected by Washington in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft, Carlson became one of the most accomplished defensemen in franchise history. He holds team records among defensemen in goals, assists, points, power-play points and games played.

He also played a key role in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship, posting 20 points during that playoff run. Now, the Ducks hope his experience and leadership can help guide the team as it attempts to return to the postseason for the first time since the 2017–18 season.

When losses begin to pile up, history starts paying attention. Certain stretches went beyond slumps, leaving marks that still frame how the NHL measures its longest and most unforgiving runs.
In the NHL, losing can arrive quietly, then grow impossible to escape. Certain seasons spiraled beyond bad luck, turning nightly defeats into historic stretches that reshaped franchises and lingered long after the final buzzer.

Some extended skids weren’t always the result of a single flaw. Injuries, thin rosters, expansion growing pains and organizational missteps often converged, creating moments where losses became part of the routine.

The league’s longest losing streaks now live as cautionary tales, remembered not just for their length but for what followed. Within those numbers lie turning points, rebuilds, and chapters that helped define NHL history.

Which teams have the longest losing streaks in NHL history?

The record books point to two franchises tied at the top for futility. Both the 1974–75 Washington Capitals and the 1992–93 San Jose Sharks endured 17 straight losses, marking the longest losing streaks in NHL regular-season history.

Drew Stafford #21 of the Buffalo Sabres in 2014 (Source: Sean Rudyk/Getty Images)

Those stretches came during formative years for each club, when roster instability and performance struggles compounded night after night. For the Capitals, the skid unfolded as a brutal winter stretch that defined an otherwise difficult inaugural era.

In San Jose, expansion-era growing pains were on full display, with a young Sharks roster unable to find consistency despite flashes of effort. These lengthy droughts now stand as stark reminders of the challenges new or rebuilding teams face in a league where parity can be unforgiving.

More recently, the Buffalo Sabres experienced a 14-game run without a win in the 2014–15 season. Even as game designs, skill levels and structures have changed, the persistence of prolonged losing streaks shows how difficult it can be to halt a downward spiral once it starts.

Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery praised Alex Ovechkin after his two-goal performance, which included his 911th NHL career goal in a win over the San Jose Sharks.
Alex Ovechkin scored twice and Ryan Leonard had a four-point night as the Washington Capitals dominated the San Jose Sharks, 7-1, on Wednesday at SAP Center. The win marked Washington’s sixth straight victory and extended its hot streak in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon Duhaime added a goal and an assist, Dylan Strome also scored, and Matt Roy contributed three assists. Charlie Lindgren stopped 23 shots for the Capitals, while Yaroslav Askarov allowed four goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Alex Nedeljkovic.

“He did a great job of helping us build that lead,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said of Ovechkin, according to NHL.com. “He’s finding himself in and around the net. There’s another example of how good his hands are in tight.”

Ovechkin’s milestones

Ovechkin’s two goals brought his career total to 911, passing Ray Bourque for the sixth-most games with one franchise. He also extended his points streak to six games, tallying four goals and five assists during that stretch.

Capital’s performance

Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals from Ovechkin, Sonny Milano, and Leonard, then added a short-handed strike from Duhaime. Ovechkin’s power-play goal in the second, along with Strome’s deflection, made it 6-0. Leonard scored again in the third, and Dmitry Orlov’s slap shot off Pavol Regenda’s skate finalized the 7-1 win.

Washington Capitals icon Alex Ovechkin delivered a standout performance against the Montreal Canadiens, adding another milestone to his historic career and reinforcing his place among the NHL’s all-time greats.
Alex Ovechkin has made a career out of defying expectations, and on Thursday night, he added another remarkable chapter to his historic résumé. Even at 40 years old, the Washington Capitals icon continues to score at a pace that places him besides himself among the greatest offensive forces the NHL has ever seen.

Against the Montreal Canadiens, Ovechkin delivered a vintage performance, completing a hat trick with the kind of poise, precision, and instinct that have defined two decades of dominance. Age may have slowed his ice time, but it hasn’t touched his scoring touch.

With the feat, Ovechkin became the oldest player ever to record a hat trick against the Canadiens, a milestone that underscores both his longevity and sustained impact.

How Ovechkin sparked Washington’s momentum

The performance also extended his current hot streak. Entering Thursday, Ovechkin had scored a goal in three straight games; his hat trick against Montreal stretched that run to four, fueling a Capitals team that has now won three consecutive contests.

905, 906, 907 FOR OVI!!!!!!! 🎩🎩🎩 pic.twitter.com/D6CGPbTNhw
— NHL (@NHL) November 21, 2025

Efficiency defined his night. Ovechkin recorded only three shots on goal — and every single one found the back of the net. For a player whose prime featured high-volume shooting nights, this precision reflects a late-career evolution rooted in experience and positioning.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/nhl-news-mike-sullivan-gives-candid-assessment-of-ny-rangers-struggles-after-loss-vs-nathan-mackinnons-avalanche" image="https://ds-images.bolavip.com/news/image?src=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.bolavip.com%2Fwebp%2Fen%2Ffull%2FBUS_20251121_BUS_531154_sullivan.webp&width=200&height=200" excerpt="After the New York Rangers’ 6–3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, Mike Sullivan discussed New York’s performance and the challenges posed by Nathan MacKinnon’s explosive squad.

Ovechkin’s production

Through 21 games this season, Ovechkin has totaled 10 goals and 10 assists, maintaining a near point-per-game pace that keeps his legendary numbers climbing. With Thursday’s performance, he now stands at 907 career goals, further extending the NHL’s all-time record.

He has also accumulated 736 assists for 1,643 points across 1,512 games, reinforcing the consistency and durability that have defined his career. Few players in the league’s history have sustained elite scoring output for as long as Ovechkin has.

What lies ahead for the Capitals’ captain

If his recent stretch is any indication, Ovechkin remains a driving force behind Washington’s push up the standings. As long as he stays healthy and continues producing at this pace, the story of Ovechkin’s historic career is far from finished — and NHL history will continue to shift each time he steps on the ice.

Jack Hughes will miss the New Jersey Devils’ matchup against the Washington Capitals, leading to roster adjustments as New Jersey manages key absences on the road.
The New Jersey Devils head into their matchup against the Washington Capitals with questions swirling around their top forward. Jack Hughes has been a key contributor this NHL season, and fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the team will adapt in his absence.

The Devils have had to navigate several roster adjustments already this season. Injuries and lineup changes have tested the depth of the squad, and every game now carries added weight.

As the team prepares for the road game in Washington, the focus remains on overall performance and execution. With the Capitals struggling to find consistency this season, the Devils’ approach and adjustments could determine the outcome of the contest.

Why is Jack Hughes not playing?

Jack Hughes is out of the lineup after sustaining a non‑hockey-related hand injury, reportedly from cutting his hand with a knife at a team dinner, according to @puckempire on X.

Devils roster adjustments

In response to Hughes’ absence, the Devils placed Connor Brown on Injured Reserve and recalled Shane Lachance from Utica.
Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are welcoming a familiar face to the organization after punishing assistant coach with leave in the 2025-26 NHL season.
Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals know the bar has been set high for them in the NHL. Coming off a Presidents’ Trophy conquest in the 2024-25 campaign, the organization in D.C. is now eyeing bigger fish in the league. On that note, the Caps are now welcoming a new assistant coach.

Spencer Carbery’s coaching staff underwent changes in the midst of a pivotal NHL season. Coming into the campaign, the Capitals raised eyebrows by suspending assistant coach Mitch Love for an undisclosed reason.

In October, Washington officially fired Love, leaving his position vacant. Love had been with the team since the 2023-24 campaign. Now, the organization has hired a replacement, bringing back a former draft selection.

“The Washington Capitals have named Patrick Wellar an assistant coach, senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announced today,” as reported by the organization on their latest official statement.

Wellar’s new role with Ovechkin’s Capitals

Wellar was drafted by the Capitals with a third-round pick in 2002—two years prior to Ovechkin’s entrance to the league as a first overall selection. However, Wellar never made his debut in the NHL. Instead, he played in the WHL, ECHL, and AHL. The Saskatchewan-native retired in 2016.

How many assistant coaches are there on NHL teams?

For as many regulations as there around the league, the NHL doesn’t have a limit on how many assistant coaches a team can employ. It all comes down to each head coach and its preferences.

The Colorado Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2022, while boasting the league’s smallest coaching staff (head coach, two assistant coaches, one goaltending coach, a video, and skills coach). Thus, less can truly be more. When it comes to Carbery and Washington, the Capitals have the following coaching staff:

Spencer Carbery (head coach)

Scott Allen (assistant coach)

Kirk Muller (assistant coach)

Kenny McCudden (assistant coach and skills coach)

Scott Murray (goaltending coach)

Brett Leonhardt (ssistant coach and video coach)

Emily Engel-Natzke (video coach)

Patrick Wellar (assistant coach)

" title="Has any NHL team ever finished the season undefeated? The closest near-perfect runs" publication_id="BUS#/nhl/nhl-teams-that-came-close-to-an-undefeated-season">

When the 1976–77 Canadiens stormed through the league with a near-perfect rhythm, they set a template for supremacy that teams like the 1995–96 Red Wings and the 2018–19 Lightning later chased. Each run rewrote what a regular-season ceiling could look like.

Those record pushes were fueled by rosters stacked with firepower—LaFleur slicing through defenses, Yzerman driving Detroit’s surge, Kucherov threading passes with ruthless precision. Their seasons carried the weight of inevitability long before April arrived.

Yet the numbers only tell part of the NHL story. Behind each historic points total sat systems built for relentless pressure, coaches fine-tuning tempo, and locker rooms convinced they were shaping an era. The echoes of those seasons still frame the race for greatness.

Boston Bruins | 2022-23 season – 135 points

2022-23 Boston Bruins (Source: Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)

In a league painstakingly designed for parity, the 2022-23 Boston Bruins achieved an unparalleled level of dominance, shattering the all-time NHL records for both wins (65) and points (135).

This was not a historic anomaly born of a different era; it was a modern marvel, delivered in the tight confines of the salary cap. Under coach Jim Montgomery, the Bruins functioned as a perfect blend of high-octane offense and ironclad defense, a duality rarely seen.

The foundation of their success was the veteran core, led by the peerless two-way game of captain Patrice Bergeron. However, the engine was the career-year surge from David Pastrnak, who eclipsed the 60-goal mark.

They weren’t just winning; they were compiling records of consistency, including five separate winning streaks of seven or more games, showcasing a season-long chokehold on the competition.

The only historical footnote to this epic regular season remains its stunning, yet early, exit in the playoffs, a cruel reminder that regular-season mastery is a separate category from Stanley Cup glory.

Montreal Canadiens | 1976-77 season – 132 points

1976-77 Montreal Canadiens (Source: The Hockey Writers)

To appreciate the ceiling of NHL regular season performance, one must look back at the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens. This team set a benchmark of 132 points that stood for 46 years, and still maintains the all-time record for the highest points percentage (1.650) in league history—a testament to their dominance in the two-point win era.

Coached by the legendary Scotty Bowman, the Canadiens were less a hockey team and more a perfectly tuned symphony of Hall of Famers. They lost a modern-era record low of just eight games all season.

Offensively, Guy Lafleur’s 136 points led the charge, while the defense, anchored by Hall of Fame goaltender Ken Dryden, was statistically unassailable, outscoring opponents by a staggering, league-record differential of 216 goals. This wasn’t merely a record-setting season; it was an exercise in on-ice inevitability, a season that defines what it means to be a true dynasty.

Detroit Red Wings | 1995-96 season – 131 points

1995-96 Detroit Red Wings (Source: The Score)

The mid-nineties saw the Detroit Red Wings ascend from contender to colossus, culminating in the 1995-96 season where they amassed 131 points. In a physical, defense-heavy period for the NHL, this Detroit team, also helmed by Scotty Bowman, redefined regular-season discipline. They tied the Bruins’ then-record of 62 wins by prioritizing structure over chaos.

With Captain Steve Yzerman evolving into a consummate two-way leader, the Wings led the entire league in Goals Against (181), showcasing the potent efficiency of their back end, featuring future legends like Nicklas Lidstrom.

Their season was a clinic in system hockey, designed to suffocate opponents and capitalize on opportunities. While the quest for the Cup that spring was derailed, their regular season performance established the enduring identity of the storied Red Wings franchise as a juggernaut of control.

Montreal Canadiens | 1977-78 season – 129 points

1977-78 Montreal Canadiens (Source: NHL Records)

The immediate follow-up to a historically great season is often a test of endurance and hunger. The 1977-78 Montreal Canadiens silenced any doubters by racking up 129 points, confirming their stranglehold on the league and securing their third consecutive Stanley Cup. This was a team that knew how to win, consistently.

Though slightly shy of their previous year’s record total, their dominance was absolute. They once again led the league in both Goals For (359) and Goals Against (183).

The stars were at their peak: Guy Lafleur registered a 60-goal, 132-point season, showcasing offensive brilliance that transcended the era. This season was less about breaking records and more about maintaining the standard—a rare feat in sports that cemented the dynasty’s place in history as relentless winners.

Tampa Bay Lightning | 2018-19 season – 128 points

2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning (Source: Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning represented the height of modern, high-scoring hockey. Their 128-point season and league-leading 62 wins were fueled by an offense that played with the speed and intensity of a storm. They clinched the Presidents’ Trophy with weeks to spare, setting a pace that left the rest of the league grasping for air.

Nikita Kucherov delivered a historic performance, tallying 128 points to win the Art Ross Trophy, perfectly complementing the goal-scoring prowess of captain Steven Stamkos. They led the NHL in Goals For (319) and boasted a terrifying power-play percentage of over 28%.

Yet, this legendary regular season is often recalled for its devastating, unforeseen footnote: a shocking first-round sweep at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This team remains the ultimate cautionary tale in hockey—that regular season glory and playoff success are drawn from two entirely different wells.

Montreal Canadiens | 1975-76 season – 127 points

1975-76 Montreal Canadiens (Source: Hockey Hall of Fame)

The 1975-76 Montreal Canadiens season, registering a robust 127 points, should be viewed as the catalyst for the dynasty’s golden age. This was the year that the foundational dominance of coach Scotty Bowman’s vision fully materialized, resulting in the first of four consecutive Stanley Cups.

They finished with 58 victories, showcasing an elevated level of consistency. The team combined the league’s top-tier defense with a ferocious attack, where Guy Lafleur cemented his superstar status by leading the team in scoring.

It was a season of methodical, relentless winning, characterized by superior goaltending from Ken Dryden and a relentless forward group. The 127 points were not an endpoint, but the very first step on a march toward historical, dynastic excellence.

Detroit Red Wings | 2005-06 season – 124 points

2004-05 Detroit Red Wings (Source: Dave Sandford/Getty Images)

Following the 2004-05 lockout and the introduction of the salary cap, the 2005-06 Detroit Red Wings proved that veteran savvy could still dominate the “New NHL.” Their 58-win, 124-point season demonstrated that a core of legends, even as they entered the twilight of their careers, knew how to win nightly.

In a high-scoring season, the Wings balanced their second-best offense with a disciplined defense. It was an era-spanning team, with Steve Yzerman playing his final season as captain, mentoring a new generation alongside the perennial brilliance of Nicklas Lidstrom.

This season was a magnificent swansong for one of the greatest cores ever assembled, though their playoff exit came swiftly, it was a profound regular-season accomplishment defined by class and consistency.

Florida Panthers | 2021-22 season – 122 points

2021-22 Florida Panthers (Source: Joel Auerbach/Getty Images)

The 2021-22 Florida Panthers stormed the NHL, logging an incredible 122 points and capturing the franchise’s first Presidents’ Trophy. They were the undisputed offensive leaders of the league, driven by a philosophy of speed and relentless pressure that resulted in a league-leading 337 Goals For.

Their success was predicated on an exhilarating, end-to-end pace, making them a must-watch team. Jonathan Huberdeau delivered a career year (115 points), complemented by captain Aleksander Barkov’s elite two-way play.

The Panthers were unstoppable at home, posting an incredible 34-7-0 record. This season shattered the traditional perception of hockey in the South, proving that a high-octane, attacking style could be translated into overwhelming regular-season success, putting the league on notice.

Boston Bruins | 1970-71 season – 121 points

1970-71 Boston Bruins (Source: Ice Hockey Wiki – Fandom)

The 1970-71 Boston Bruins season was a statistical demolition job. Logging 121 points and 57 wins, this Bruins squad didn’t just win games; they obliterated them, setting records for both goals (399) and goal differential (+192) that were monumental for the time.

This team was the peak expression of aggressive, attacking hockey, centered around the revolutionary Bobby Orr, who amassed an astonishing 139 points from the defense position.

The scoring depth was unparalleled, becoming the only team in NHL history to feature the top four scorers in the league: Phil Esposito, Orr, Johnny Bucyk, and Ken Hodge. Despite a shocking first-round exit, the 1970-71 Bruins are remembered as the most offensively dominant team of their era, transforming how the game was played.

Washington Capitals | 2009-10 season – 121 points

2009-10 Washington Capitals (Source: Ned Dishman/Getty Images)

The 2009-10 Washington Capitals were pure entertainment, capturing the Presidents’ Trophy with 121 points. This team fully embraced the high-risk, high-reward style of coach Bruce Boudreau, leading the league with 313 Goals For—the highest total by any NHL team since the 1995-96 Red Wings.

The narrative was dominated by captain Alex Ovechkin, who, alongside Nicklas Bäckström, made the Capitals’ power play a league-best spectacle. Their team success was mirrored in their star’s performance, as Ovechkin’s personal brilliance fueled their collective dominance.

They became the first non-Original Six team to break the 120-point barrier, yet their narrative, like Tampa Bay’s years later, is bittersweet—a phenomenal, record-breaking regular season that ultimately crumbled in a dramatic first-round playoff upset.

Montreal Canadiens | 1972-73 season – 120 points

1972-73 Montreal Canadiens (Source: NHL Records)

In a list dominated by offensive fireworks, the 1972-73 Montreal Canadiens stand out for their measured strength. Their 120 points were accumulated through consistency and a rock-solid defense that resulted in a Stanley Cup victory.

This was a vintage Scotty Bowman squad: disciplined, deep, and featuring the league’s best defense. This season marked the end of an era, as legendary captain Henri Richard played his final season.

The blend of veterans like Richard and the emerging power of Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden allowed them to maintain a clinical level of performance. This was the embodiment of a championship team that valued system and structure above all else, making their 120 points a testament to defensive genius.

Washington Capitals | 2015-16 season – 120 points

2015-16 Washington Capitals (Source: Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

The 2015-16 Washington Capitals, under coach Barry Trotz, were a markedly different beast from their 2010 counterpart. Their 120 points came from a disciplined, balanced team that finished top-three in both Goals For and Goals Against. They traded some of the old Rock the Red chaos for foundational, two-way excellence.

This was a mature, deep roster, setting a new franchise record for 56 wins, including an impressive 27 road victories. Alex Ovechkin continued his goal-scoring pace, but the supporting cast—including Nicklas Bäckström and the defensive depth—showed a commitment to the 200-foot game.

The 120-point season was a masterclass in regular-season execution, proving that the Capitals had successfully evolved into a true perennial contender, even if the playoff success remained just out of reach that year.

The 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers campaign was a pivotal moment in NHL history. Their 119 points not only led the league but served as the launchpad for their dynasty, as they finally defeated the four-time defending champion Islanders to claim their first Stanley Cup.

This team played with unparalleled offensive audacity, setting an NHL record for 446 Goals For in a season. At the center of it all was captain Wayne Gretzky, who produced staggering numbers alongside fellow Hall of Famers Jari Kurri and Paul Coffey.

The 119 points represented the moment the high-flying, up-tempo WHA-style hockey, led by Gretzky’s genius, proved it was the superior method, ushering in a new, high-scoring era for the NHL.

Edmonton Oilers | 1985-86 season – 119 points

The 1985-86 Edmonton Oilers demonstrated relentless consistency, once again hitting the 119-point mark and capturing their first-ever Presidents’ Trophy. This season is immortalized for the sheer statistical absurdity achieved by its leader.

Wayne Gretzky was at the peak of his powers, setting the all-time single-season records for assists (163) and points (215), numbers that still defy belief. The offense was so deep that Jari Kurri scored 68 goals and Paul Coffey broke Bobby Orr’s record for goals by a defenseman with 48.

Although their bid for a third straight Cup was surprisingly cut short, the 119 points of 1985-86 stand as a monument to the greatest individual offensive season in league history, achieved by a team that was truly a statistical force of nature.

Pittsburgh Penguins | 1992-93 season – 119 points

1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins (Source: Pittsburgh Hockey History)

The 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins season, culminating in 119 points and the Presidents’ Trophy, is defined by an incredible, emotionally charged narrative. This team, a two-time defending champion, achieved an all-time record: a 17-game winning streak that still stands today.

The emotional heart of this season was Mario Lemieux, who returned from his battle with Hodgkin’s disease to win the Art Ross Trophy with 160 points, despite missing 24 games. Lemieux’s comeback, combined with the star power of Jaromir Jagr, fueled an unstoppable team.

This 119-point season was a testament to competitive hunger, resilience, and the sheer genius of its captain, creating one of the most feel-good and statistically dominant runs in hockey history.
