The Philadelphia Phillies added defensive depth with Sergio Alcántara on a minor‑league deal, strengthening their Triple‑A options after his release from the Washington Nationals.
The Philadelphia Phillies made their first regular-season addition quickly, signing shortstop Sergio Alcantara just one day after he was released by divisional rival Washington Nationals. The 29-year-old infielder was assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, providing depth behind Philadelphia’s established major league infield.

Alcantara has appeared in major league games in four of the past six seasons, totaling 193 contests with stints for the Cubs, Padres, Diamondbacks, and Nationals.

While his career .618 OPS indicates limited offensive output, his ability to play multiple infield positions makes him a valuable organizational piece, particularly at the Triple-A level.

Depth move behind Phillies’ MLB infield

With Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, Edmundo Sosa, and Alec Bohm occupying the major league roster, Alcantara’s role is primarily to support the farm system and provide coverage in case of unexpected injuries. His defensive reliability and experience give the Phillies confidence that they can maintain stability at multiple positions should any of their starters miss time.

After being designated for assignment several times in recent years, Alcantara now has a fresh start with a team willing to utilize his versatility. While a major league call-up may not happen immediately, his presence strengthens Philadelphia’s infield depth and ensures the organization is prepared for the long MLB season.

The New York Mets lost a lefty veteran reliever to an NL East rival on waivers, marking a new opportunity as teams finalized their 2026 rosters.
The 2025 season was a rollercoaster for Richard Lovelady, and the veteran reliever had grown accustomed to life on the move. After signing with the New York Mets in June following his release from the Minnesota Twins, he spent much of the year traveling between Queens and Triple-A Syracuse, often without certainty over his roster status.

Designated for assignment four times, including twice before throwing a single pitch for the big-league club, Lovelady endured a season defined by roster churn and constant uncertainty.

Last week, that question was answered. Claimed on waivers by the Washington Nationals, the lefty reliever now has a fresh opportunity to redefine his role and make an impact in the 2026 season

Will Lovelady find stability with his new team?

The move to the Nationals, a rebuilding club in the NL East, offers Lovelady a more defined path to innings and potential impact. “It’s a new opportunity, and I’m ready to see what this team has in mind,” Lovelady said following the claim.

Richard Lovelady #57 of the Mets pitches Pirates. Justin Berl/Getty Images)

His time with the Mets saw Lovelady pitch 10 innings, allowing seven earned runs and three home runs, striking out nine while walking four. Across 111 career MLB innings, the veteran holds a 5.35 ERA and has appeared in games for the Athletics, Cubs, Rays, and Blue Jays.

What’s next for Lovelady and the Nationals?

With spring training approaching, Lovelady will compete for a roster spot and the chance to contribute in high-leverage situations. For the Mets, his departure marks another shift in a bullpen that continues to evolve as the season nears.

An All-Star shortstop is generating MLB trade buzz as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox emerge while the Washington Nationals evaluate their options.
The MLB trade market has slowed after a wave of high-profile pitching deals reshaped the landscape. Moves involving Freddy Peralta and MacKenzie Gore set an aggressive tone early, but since then, impact names have been harder to find as teams reassess their options ahead of Spring Training.

One player quietly moving into the spotlight is CJ Abrams, the 25-year-old shortstop of the Washington Nationals. With three years of team control remaining, Abrams represents a rare blend of youth, pedigree, and immediate value—qualities that rebuilding clubs rarely move unless the return is significant.

The San Francisco Giants reportedly explored a deal for Abrams but failed to meet Washington’s asking price, a signal that the Nationals are open to discussions but unwilling to compromise on value as they shape the next phase of their rebuild.

Could Yankees or Red Sox step in as serious contenders for Abrams?

According to Jim Bowden, two familiar powers could soon enter the conversation. Writing for The Athletic, Bowden pointed to the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox as teams worth monitoring as Abrams’ market develops. “If the Nationals can deal Abrams for a package of three-to-five good prospects, that’s probably their best play to further their rebuild,” Bowden wrote.

CJ Abrams #5 of the Nationals is tagged out during the fifth inning against the Cubs. Sage Zipeto/Getty Images

He added that while San Francisco remains a logical fit, Washington may find leverage by widening the field. “Solid potential trade partners also include the Red Sox, Yankees, Padres, and Mariners,” Bowden noted, underscoring how demand could grow if talks resume.

<div class="wp_fsn_relatedlinks" use="ALSO" link="https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/mlb-rumors-ny-yankees-ny-mets-among-early-favorites-to-land-two-time-all-star-starter-at-2026-trade-deadline" image="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2026/01/27072908/severino-200x200.webp" excerpt="The New York Yankees and New York Mets are considered early favorites to land a two-time All-Star pitcher at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, boosting rotation depth.

How does Abrams fit differently in New York and Boston?

The Yankees’ interest would be driven by uncertainty at shortstop, where Anthony Volpe has dealt with injuries and uneven stretches. Abrams could offer stability and long-term upside, but only if New York is willing to part with multiple premium prospects.

Abrams already owns an All-Star appearance, yet his profile remains complex. He has not produced a four-bWAR season, leaving room for debate about whether his ceiling matches Washington’s demands.

Former Boston Red Sox Lucas Giolito could return to the team that drafted him as free agency decisions unfold ahead of the 2026 season.
Change continues to define the offseason for the Boston Red Sox, particularly within a pitching staff that has undergone notable turnover in recent weeks. As the organization prepares for spring training, decisions made now are shaping not only the rotation but also the future of several familiar arms.

Boston’s recent acquisitions have altered the internal landscape, leaving limited clarity for pitchers who once appeared part of the club’s short-term plans. Among them is Lucas Giolito, whose path forward appears increasingly detached from the Red Sox despite his presence just one season ago.

That uncertainty was underscored by a recent assessment from Bleacher Report analyst Zachary D. Rymer, who suggested Giolito’s free agency could lead him back to familiar ground.

“There hasn’t been a lot of reported interest in Lucas Giolito this winter, which would be surprising if his 3.41 ERA from last year wasn’t such an obvious mirage,” Rymer wrote. “You have to wonder if Giolito’s free agency will end with contenders bypassing him… and for this, the Nationals would be perfect.”

Lucas Giolito #54 of the Red Sox pitches against the Padres. Orlando Ramirez/Getty Images

Why does Washington make sense as a landing spot?

The Washington Nationals have a clear vacancy in their rotation following the departure of MacKenzie Gore, creating a natural opening for a veteran starter seeking stability and opportunity. Giolito’s history with the organization adds another layer of logic to the potential reunion.

A short-term agreement would align with Washington’s timeline while allowing Giolito to rebuild value. If effective, he could quickly emerge as a trade candidate for contenders later in the season.

How did Boston’s offseason moves change the equation?

The additions of Ranger Suárez, Johan Oviedo, and Sonny Gray have reshaped Boston’s pitching depth, leaving little room for Giolito without unexpected developments. The Red Sox now appear committed to a different rotation structure.

What will define Giolito’s next chapter?

For Giolito, the coming season represents a chance to reset his trajectory. After losing his footing in Boston, the emphasis now shifts toward consistency and durability. Wherever he lands, early performance will be critical in determining whether he can reestablish himself as a reliable option for clubs with postseason aspirations.

The New York Yankees could explore a bold shortstop move as Anthony Volpe’s future draws scrutiny, with an All-Star option emerging after Cody Bellinger’s return.
The New York Yankees entered the offseason intent on reinforcing a roster that remains firmly in win-now mode. Bringing back Cody Bellinger added balance to the lineup and defensive versatility, but it also tightened the margin for error at other positions across the diamond.

One of those positions is shortstop, where Anthony Volpe continues to face scrutiny. Once viewed as a foundational piece of the franchise, Volpe has yet to deliver consistent offensive production, placing pressure on both his development timeline and the organization’s patience.

That uncertainty has fueled external speculation. According to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Yankees could eventually explore the trade market for an established replacement if Volpe’s struggles persist.

“[CJ] Abrams is the name for me that will likely at some point in time move on,” Morosi said. “…If [Anthony] Volpe struggles… maybe the Yankees take a look at someone like an Abrams down towards the trade deadline.”

Anthony Volpe #11 of the Yankees runs around the bases after his solo home run. Ishika Samant/Getty Images

Why would the Yankees consider replacing Anthony Volpe?

Volpe is set to enter his fourth MLB season still searching for offensive stability. He owns a career .662 OPS and has never surpassed .670 in a single year, finishing 2025 with an 83 wRC+, the lowest mark among qualified Yankees hitters during a season in which run production was at a premium.

Why does CJ Abrams fit the Yankees’ timeline?

Abrams, an All-Star in 2024, represents a shortstop entering his prime. The 25-year-old posted a career-best .748 OPS last season, hit 19 home runs, drove in 60 runs, and stole 31 bases for the second straight year, offering both athleticism and offensive upside the Yankees currently lack at shortstop.

Would the Nationals be open to a trade?

The Washington Nationals have already shown a willingness to deal core players during their retooling phase. “Washington also has been shopping shortstop CJ Abrams and outfielder Jacob Young this offseason,” The Washington Post reported, noting that while the asking price would be high, Abrams is not viewed as untouchable.

https://bolavip.com/en/mlb/mackenzie-gore-to-the-rangers-whats-his-contract-after-trade-with-the-nationals

Mackenzie Gore is on the move as the Texas Rangers traded with the Washington Nationals to get his services.
The Texas Rangers landed a well-known lefty for next season, as they traded with the Washington Nationals to get MacKenzie Gore. Now that they have one of the most coveted pitchers on the market, let’s take a look at the contract he’ll have.

The news were broke by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. After, Robert Murray of Foul Territory indicated the Nationals gave up Gavin Fien, Alejandro Rosario, Abimelec Ortiz, Devin Fitz-Gerald and Yeremy Cabrer.

According to Spotrac, Mackenzie Gore will earn $5.6 million. Gore and the Nationals avoided arbitration a couple of weeks ago, when they agreed to a one-year deal. Now, two weeks later, he is headed to the Rangers to bolster their rotation.

Gore is looking for a bounce back season

The 27-year old had 30 starts in 2025 where he was hampered by an ankle injury that ended his season in September. Also, he had 4.17 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 185/64 strikeouts-to-base-on-balls ratio. He also had 5-15 record. The ERA could improve but Gore has never been an ERA leader. He did have a career-high in strikeouts. On the flip side, he led the majors in wild pitches for a second straight year.

MacKenzie Gore will look to put all of the pieces together in new threads!

He sat 95-96 MPH in 2025, albeit a little higher in the first half

With great extension and a complimentary arsenal, Gore’s ceiling is incredibly high

An aggressive-yet-clever addition for the Rangers! https://t.co/X9YiOUmxyP pic.twitter.com/1EZAR4CWSw
— High Leverage Baseball (@HighLevBaseball) January 22, 2026

Gore is a high-upside pitcher with an elite four-pitch mix and he has established himself like a strikeout artist. His curveball is very dominant and he also has a strong slider. His changeup is a swing-and-miss kind of throw. He brings a lot of heat to the mound.

Texas rotation is looking scary

While the Nationals used this trade to get five prospects, the Rangers are the ones getting a huge boost in their rotation. Looking at the names, the only thing stopping this rotation from becoming one of the MLB’s best is health.

Though facing a glaring need, reports suggest the New York Mets are unlikely to pursue a trade for an All-Star on a National League East opponent in MLB.
After signing Bo Bichette, all the talk regarding the New York Mets now revolves around the pitching position. The Orange and Blue are in need of some help on the mound, but reports indicate they will not be looking in the direction of an All-Star on a fellow NL East club in MLB.

There has been no shortage of pitchers linked to the Mets in the 2026 MLB offseason. After signing Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal, the Mets face a dilemma with a rising star. Moreover, New York still faces an unsolved crisis on the mound and at the bullpen. Thus, the buzz around the ace position won’t quiet down anytime soon.

However, some options are less likely than others. In that regard, a recent report around MLB indicates the Mets are not pursuing Washington Nationals starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore, who earned his first invite to the All-Star Game in the 2025 season.

According to a report by The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Mets making a move for the left-handed pitcher is a long shot. Gore is coming off a strong year with the Nationals, as he posted 3.0 WAR, 4.17 ERA, and 185 strikeouts. Still, New York isn’t blown away by his numbers and will instead look elsewhere to strengthen its rotation.

MacKenzie Gore before a pitch

Another name off the list

According to the same report, Kansas City Royals ace Kris Bubic is another candidate the organization in Queens is not looking too deep into. Instead, the Mets will continue their pursuit for pitching assistance elsewhere in MLB.

Last season, Bubic appeared in 20 games for the Royals (starting in all of them). Through them all, the 28-year-old registered 3.1 WAR, 2.55 ERA, and 116 strikeouts. Like Gore, Bubic earned an invite to the All-Star, after allowing just 98 hits, 38 runs, 33 earned runs, and 6 home runs in the 2025 MLB campaign.

Who are Mets being linked to?

Despite both Bubic and Gore playing some of the best baseball of their MLB careers, the Mets are still not buying into the hype and will explore the pitching market elsewhere.

As things stand, Framber Valdez and Freddy Peralta are the main targets in Queens. However, the Mets are being challenged by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who intensified their pursuit of the Milwaukee Brewers’ premier starter.

There’s still time left before Opening Day 2026, but the clock is ticking and the asking prices aren’t going down. Sooner or later, New York will be forced to make a move.

The Washington Nationals are aiming to return to the playoffs led by CJ Abrams, and to help achieve that, they’ve added a former New York Mets player to their roster.
A return to the spotlight is imperative for the Washington Nationals. After missing the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year, CJ Abrams will now have a new teammate— a former New York Mets player— to help get the team back into contention.

Ken Rosenthal, via his official X account, reported the signing of free-agent RHP Trevor Gott, who agreed to a minor-league contract. The experienced pitcher previously suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, requiring Tommy John surgery in April 2024.

While it’s unclear what role Gott will play once the new MLB season begins, the fact remains that manager Blake Butera now has another piece to consider in his plans.

Gott’s stats with the Mets

Prior to his significant injury, Trevor Gott experienced a turbulent tenure with the New York Mets following his mid-season arrival from Seattle. Across 34 appearances, he struggled to find consistency, posting a 0-2 record with a 4.34 ERA in Queens and failing to record a single save.

Trevor Gott #33 of the New York Mets.

His performance was marked by extreme platoon splits, as left-handed hitters punished him for a .337 average, while he remained effective against righties, holding them to .222.

Most concerning was his difficulty in high-leverage moments; he allowed 63.6% of inherited runners to score, ultimately finishing the year with a combined 4.19 ERA between both clubs.

Back in the spotlight

After falling short of the postseason in 2025, CJ Abrams enters the 2026 campaign determined to lead the Washington Nationals back into the national spotlight.

Despite a frustrating second half, Abrams proved his elite ceiling last year by joining the exclusive 20/30 club, finishing with 19 home runs, 31 stolen bases, and a career-best 3.1 WAR.

Now entering his age-25 season, the All-Star shortstop—and potential future second baseman—is focused on finding the consistency that saw him post a massive .836 OPS before the break. By anchoring a young, hungry core alongside stars like James Wood and MacKenzie Gore, Abrams aims to translate his dynamic speed and power into a leadership role that finally pushes Washington back into the playoff hunt.

Carlos Mendoza’s New York Mets continue their search to add an All-Star ahead of the 2026 MLB season.
While Kyle Tucker’s situation for the upcoming season remains unresolved, the New York Mets don’t want to rest on their laurels when it comes to adding top-tier talent. With their sights set on acquiring another All-Star, Carlos Mendoza’s team has now turned its attention to the NL East.

The Mets are heavily in on the starting pitching market and, according to insider Pat Ragazzo, have inquired in Queens about the availability of Washington Nationals star Mackenzie Gore.

Still, a significant obstacle could stand in the way of a potential move to the Mets: the asking price for Gore is said to be astronomically high, and nothing appears to be close on this front, at least for now.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether New York’s interest in acquiring the All-Star materializes in the short term, or if the Mets will turn to alternative options that can match an elite-level player.

MacKenzie Gore #1 of the Washington Nationals.

Adding top-tier talent to the roster

As the 2026 season approaches, the New York Mets are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for elite talent, continuing heavy negotiations with superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker.

" title="NY Mets reportedly not frontrunners for Kyle Tucker in free agency" publication_id="BUS#/mlb/ny-mets-reportedly-not-frontrunners-for-kyle-tucker-in-free-agency">

While the battle for Tucker remains intense, the front office is simultaneously exploring a blockbuster trade for Brewers ace Freddy Peralta to anchor their rotation. By targeting both a premier power bat and a dominant starter, the Mets position themselves to add an All-Star to their roster and signal their intent to dominate the National League this year.

The Montreal Expos were once a vibrant, cultural pillar of baseball, the MLB’s first international franchise. Their tragic decline began when the great 1994 season was canceled, stripping a championship-caliber team of its shot at glory.

Years of unstable ownership and deteriorating facilities—a combination of bad luck and worse business—forced the franchise into a slow demise. This period was marked by massive financial strain and a dedicated fanbase being left behind.

This is the chronicle of that final, seismic shift. The ultimate question of what drove the team out and how the remnants of the Expos were soon reborn over 1,000 miles away as the Washington Nationals.

The glory years and the tragic promise (1969–1993)

The Montreal Expos, or Nos Amours (Our Loves), were a revolutionary franchise, marking Major League Baseball’s first foray outside the United States in 1969. Playing first at the intimate Jarry Park and later at Olympic Stadium, the club quickly established a unique, vibrant culture defined by its iconic multicolored uniforms and charismatic players like Hall of Famer Gary Carter.

Montreal Expos (Source: @themain)

The Expos enjoyed early periods of success, culminating in their only division title in the strike-shortened 1981 season. Though they lost the NLCS in a heartbreaking moment known as “Blue Monday,” the team was recognized as a consistent contender with one of the best minor league systems in the game.

The true peak of the franchise arrived in the 1994 season. With a roster featuring young stars like Larry Walker and Pedro Martinez, the Expos had the best record in baseball (74-40) and were comfortably positioned to win their first undisputed division title, heading toward a likely World Series run. This success, however, would be tragically cut short by forces outside the lines.

The 1994 strike and the beginning of the end

The player’s strike that abruptly ended the 1994 MLB season was a devastating blow to the entire league, but its impact was arguably most lethal in Montreal. The cancellation of the World Series that year not only robbed the city of a legitimate chance at a championship but also completely evaporated fan interest and revenue.

Historical accounts widely agree that the 1994 strike was the definitive moment that sealed the franchise’s fate. The club lost crucial ticket and potential playoff revenue that season, which it could not afford to replace.

The consequence was immediate and ruinous. Unable to bear the financial losses, the ownership group ordered a complete “fire sale” of the team’s top talent in 1995. Stars like Larry Walker and John Wetteland were traded away, dismantling a dominant roster overnight.

The dedicated fanbase felt betrayed, and attendance plummeted, never to recover. The financial viability of baseball in Montreal had been severely damaged, leading to the painful reality of a dedicated fanbase being left behind.

The financial collapse and the final exit (1995–2004)

Following the 1994 strike, the Expos entered a period of slow, agonizing demise, plagued by a toxic mix of instability and financial distress. The main factors driving the eventual move were structural. First, the team played in the Olympic Stadium, a deteriorating facility known as the “Big Owe” due to its massive public debt and poor fan experience.

Second, a string of controversial owners—most notably Jeffrey Loria—was unwilling to invest in the team or secure funding for a new, baseball-specific downtown stadium, which experts argued was essential for the team’s survival.

By the early 2000s, with average attendance dipping below 10,000 per game, Major League Baseball stepped in and purchased the club in 2002 to prevent its collapse. After a failed attempt at contraction, MLB began to search for a new city.

For their final two seasons (2003 and 2004), the homeless Expos played a bizarre schedule, splitting “home” games between Montreal and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Historical reports confirm that Washington D.C. emerged as the frontrunner due to its market size and willingness to commit to a new ballpark. MLB officially announced the relocation in September 2004, ending the Expos’ 36-year run.

Rebirth in D.C.: The Washington Nationals era

The final, seismic shift in the franchise’s history occurred in 2005 when the team was reborn in the United States capital as the Washington Nationals. The new name was a nod to the city’s baseball past, reviving the name of a previous franchise. The Nationals initially played at RFK Stadium before moving into their state-of-the-art Nationals Park in 2008.

Washington National players and manager in 2019.
The successful rebranding and the commitment to a new stadium marked the end of the franchise’s instability. The Nationals swiftly built a contender through the draft and key free-agent signings, eventually achieving the glory that eluded the Expos for so long.

The crowning achievement came in 2019 when the Washington Nationals won the World Series, bringing a championship to a city that had waited decades for the return of baseball. Though the celebration belonged to Washington, the history of the Expos and their unfulfilled promise remains a permanent part of the Nationals’ DNA.

Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough was ejected from the series opener against the Washington Nationals on Monday following a contentious exchange.
The Miami Marlins, under the leadership of manager Clayton McCullough, endured a challenging start to their series opener against the Washington Nationals on Monday. In a heated exchange during the first inning, McCullough was ejected after an intense argument with the umpire.

“A mother f*** major league player has something to say to you and you’re gonna throw him the f*** out for that? In the first f*** inning? Are you f*** kidding me?” McCullough was reported saying to the umpire. The incident seemed to unsettle the team, adversely affecting their performance.

Following the game, McCullough expressed his frustration and clarified the situation regarding Xavier Edwards’ ejection. “Xavier had a few words as he crossed the field, unhappy with his second strike call, and continued from the dugout. Umpire Brennan Miller decided he’d heard enough,“ McCullough explained to Fish On First’s Kevin Barral.

The early ejections disrupted the Marlins’ focus, contributing to their 2-0 loss to the Nationals. They now face a 0-1 series deficit as the matchup continues Tuesday night at Nationals Park.

Marlins face key injuries in setback against Nationals

In a challenging development for the Miami Marlins, the team not only lost two players to ejections during their recent clash with the Washington Nationals but also grappled with significant injury setbacks. As the Marlins assess the situation, manager Cullough must now consider potential replacements for the team’s depleted roster.

A major blow came with the placement of pitcher Edward Cabrera on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow sprain. This injury could potentially sideline him for the remainder of the season, a significant loss as the Marlins strive to maintain their competitive edge.

Further compounding their difficulties, outfielder Derek Hill exited the game with right hamstring discomfort. These injuries severely impact the Marlins’ hopes of securing a Wild Card berth, diminishing their chances as the season progresses.

Marlins’ struggle in Wild Card race intensifies

The Marlins’ prospects took a hit as they confronted two crucial player absences in their series opener against the Nationals. These setbacks cast doubt over Miami’s Wild Card ambitions, especially with the New York Mets solidly holding the second spot in the standings, and the Marlins trailing by nine games.

To clinch a Wild Card spot, the Marlins must execute an extraordinary run, winning their remaining regular-season games. Concurrently, they must rely on teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants, and Cincinnati Reds losing five or more games each to bridge the gap in standings.
