Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander surpassed Wilt Chamberlain’s record for the most consecutive 20-point games in NBA history, but the reigning MVP admitted he was unaware of the milestone at the moment he achieved it.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 104–102 victory over the Boston Celtics, delivering a 35-point performance to break Wilt Chamberlain’s record for the most consecutive 20-point games (127 matches) in NBA history. Remarkably, the superstar guard admitted he was unaware he had reached the historic milestone until the home crowd erupted.

“I knew I was around there, but I didn’t know exactly how many,” Gilgeous-Alexander revealed during the post-game press conference. “Once I heard the crowd, I was like, ‘OK, that must have been it’”.

The record-breaking moment occurred at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter. After receiving an assist from Cason Wallace, Gilgeous-Alexander knocked down a signature foot-jumper to cross the 20-point threshold for the night. The Paycom Center immediately exploded in celebration, signaling to the Canadian guard that he had officially made history.

Chamberlain had held the record for 63 years, having recorded 126 consecutive 20-point games between 1961 and 1963. The achievement adds to an already legendary resume for Gilgeous-Alexander, who is the reigning NBA champion, Finals MVP, and regular-season MVP.

THE MOMENT HISTORY WAS MADE 🎥 pic.twitter.com/RRkYIfkKRg
— OKC THUNDER (@okcthunder) March 13, 2026

The Thunder currently sit atop the Western Conference with an impressive 52–15 record. Gilgeous-Alexander remains the focal point of the team’s success, ranking second in the league in scoring with 31.8 points per game, while contributing 4.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists through 55 appearances this season.

While Gilgeous-Alexander’s resume now includes an NBA Championship, a Finals MVP, and a regular-season MVP, he was quick to deflect praise toward the Thunder organization and his teammates.

“Basketball is a five-man sport. You can’t win by yourself,” he said. “You need great teammates, great role players, a great coach. I like to think we have all of those. None of the things I accomplished would matter if we weren’t winning. And I probably wouldn’t have most of them if we weren’t winning. That’s why you play the game”.

Last season, the Thunder recorded a total of 84 victories across the regular season and playoffs, culminating in an NBA Championship following a 4–3 series win over the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals.

So far this season, the team has already tallied 52 wins. With Shai continuing to perform at an elite level, that total is expected to climb significantly as the franchise looks to defend its title.

A historic night from Bam Adebayo has reignited the conversation around the NBA’s greatest scoring performances. His explosive outing now sits in rare company alongside legendary games by Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant.
Bam Adebayo delivered one of the most shocking scoring performances the NBA has seen in decades when he erupted for 83 points for the Miami Heat, instantly entering one of the league’s most exclusive record lists.

The historic night placed him alongside two of the greatest scoring performances ever recorded: Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game in 1962 and Kobe Bryant’s 81-point masterpiece in 2006.

His 83-point outing now sits directly between those two historic performances. From field goals to three-pointers and free throws, each game tells a story about how the points were produced and how they reshaped the league’s record books.

The stats behind Bam Adebayo’s 83 points for the Miami Heat

Bam Adebayo’s 83 points for the Miami Heat came in a 150–129 win over the Washington Wizards on March 10, 2026. He finished the game shooting 20-for-43 from the field, while also attempting a remarkable number of three-pointers for a player who usually operates near the basket, knocking down 7-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Bam Adebayo of the Heat celebrates with teammates after a 150-129 win (Source: Megan Briggs/Getty Images)

What ultimately pushed the total into historic territory was his production at the foul line. He converted 36 free throws on 43 attempts, setting new NBA single-game records for both free throws made and attempted.

Combined with his field goals and perimeter shots, those free throws allowed him to reach the 83-point mark in a game where he already had 31 points in the first quarter and 62 by the end of the third.

Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point masterpiece

Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game came on March 2, 1962, when the Philadelphia Warriors defeated the New York Knicks 169–147. He dominated the game primarily through relentless interior scoring, finishing the night making 36 field goals, repeatedly scoring around the rim against a Knicks defense that struggled to contain him throughout the game.

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: NBA)

At the time, the NBA did not yet have a three-point line, meaning every field goal he made counted for two points. Another key factor in reaching the century mark was his unexpected efficiency from the free-throw line.

Chamberlain, who was often criticized for his struggles at the stripe during his career, converted 28 free throws in that game. Those points proved essential in pushing his total to 100, creating a record that still stands today as the highest single-game scoring performance in history.

Kobe Bryant’s 81-point performance

Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game occurred on January 22, 2006. Playing for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Toronto Raptors, he carried his team to a 122–104 comeback victory.

Kobe Bryant #8 of the Los Angeles Lakers at the 2006 NBA Playoffs (Source: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)

He reached the 81-point mark by shooting 28-for-46 from the field, repeatedly attacking the Raptors’ defense in isolation situations and transition opportunities.

His scoring included seven three-pointers, which stretched the defense and forced Toronto to guard him well beyond the perimeter. He also capitalized on his trips to the foul line, converting 18 of his 20 free-throw attempts.

The combination of high efficiency from the field, strong three-point shooting and near-perfect free-throw accuracy allowed him to reach 81 points, a total that stood as the second-highest for nearly two decades until Adebayo’s recent performance.

Bam Adebayo had a night for the ages, surpassing Kobe Bryant with the second highest scoring game by a single player in NBA history with 83 points for the Miami Heat against the Washington Wizards.
Bam Adebayo didn’t hesitate to rank his 83-point performance for the Miami Heat against the Washington Wizards as the most important moment in his NBA career.

“Number 1, for sure,” Adebayo told FanDuel Sports Network after the Heat’s 150-129 win in Miami, in front of a crowd excited to see him surpass the 81-point mark set by Kobe Bryant on January 22, 2006.

Wilt Chamberlain still holds the record for the most points scored by a single player in an NBA game, having posted 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks in 1962.

Only Wilt Chamberlain had a highest-scoring game than Adebayo

Adebayo, however, can still take pride in holding the second highest-scoring game in league history. “Obviously, top three performances of all time,” Adebayo told Norman Powell when his teammate mentioned Wilt and Kobe’s numbers.

"Top 3 performances of all time" 💪 pic.twitter.com/huPPRqGAme
— Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) March 11, 2026

Even though Chamberlain still tops the list, Adebayo’s performance counts with video evidence, something Wilt’s historic game doesn’t. It may not change the facts, but at least Bam can look back at the highlights from his historic night any time he wants.

How Adebayo reached the 83 points in historic night in Miami

It appeared to be written in the stars, as Adebayo admitted postgame that he felt this could be a special game when he already had 43 points at halftime. It all started with a strong first quarter, where his 31 points outscored the 29 scored by the entire Wizards team.

When he surpassed the 70-point mark in the fourth quarter and it was evident that Adebayo was on pace to surpass Bryant, the Heat did everything in their power to help Bam make history.

The final minutes at the Kaseya Center were wild, with the crowd on the edge of their seats as the Heat’s only intention was to help Bam score, whereas the Wizards tried to stop Adebayo from making them the victims of a record.

In the end, the Heat’s effort paid off as Adebayo got enough shots to surpass Kobe and set a new milestone. Getting to Chamberlain’s 100 points remains a nearly impossible goal for any player, but Adebayo got closer than many all-time greats.

83! pic.twitter.com/qn8x8xsuxM
— Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) March 11, 2026

Adebayo breaks the Heat record set by LeBron James

LeBron James held the previous record in franchise history, with 61 points for the Heat against the Charlotte Bobcats on March 3, 2014. On Tuesday night, Adebayo scored 20 of 43 field goals, 7 of 22 three-pointers, and 36 of 43 free throws to leave The King behind.

The numbers don’t lie. Adebayo has once again proved what he’s capable of, and even if he eventually has a night off, his 83-point performance will always be a reminder of how much respect he deserves.

Rebounds have long been one of the National Basketball Association’s clearest indicators of control inside the paint, often reflecting pace, physicality, roster construction and the strategic priorities of each era.

Throughout the league’s history, certain seasons produced rebounding totals that clearly separated themselves from the rest, shaped by faster tempos, heavier minutes and interior dominance that defined entire teams.

Those standout campaigns established an all-time single-season benchmark, a record born from a very different NBA and one that still looms large in historical comparisons.

Who holds the record for most rebounds in one NBA season?

The all-time NBA record for most rebounds in a single season belongs to Wilt Chamberlain, who pulled down 2,149 rebounds for the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1960-61 season. This mark stands as the highest total ever recorded in a single regular season in NBA history.

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: NBA)

His performance that year also translated to an eye-popping average of 27.2 rebounds per game, another historic benchmark that has proven exceptionally hard to approach in any modern era context.

When he was playing in the early 1960s, the pace of NBA games was significantly faster than it is today, meaning more shot attempts and more opportunities for rebounds. The league itself had only begun tracking rebounds officially in the 1950-51 season, making him among the earliest statistical trailblazers in this category.

In that 1960-61 campaign, he not only led the league — he redefined what dominance on the boards looked like. His sheer size, athleticism and positioning enabled him to out-rebound almost every opponent night after night, crafting totals that modern stars rarely flirt with.

Even the NBA’s best rebounders in recent seasons generally total well under 1,500 rebounds in a full season, illustrating just how distant his benchmark remains. Part of his legendary status comes not just from the season total, but from his overall rebounding prowess throughout his career.

Across different eras, several NBA players have posted single-season minute totals that stand out well above the norm. These numbers reflect how often they stayed on the floor and how central they were to their teams’ game plans.

In many cases, these workloads emerged from tight rotations, limited depth, or coaches relying heavily on a primary contributor. The data shows patterns tied to specific seasons, roster situations and the demands of each era.

Reviewing the all-time leaders helps outline how playing time has shifted over decades—when stars were used more aggressively, when the pace slowed, and when durability became a defining factor in a player’s season.

Who played the most minutes in a single NBA season?

In the 1961-62 NBA season, Wilt Chamberlain logged a staggering 3,882 minutes over 80 games — the most any player has ever played in a single regular season. That amounts to an average of 48.5 minutes per game.

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: NBA)

What made that feat possible was a mixture of personal durability, era context, and team dependence. Back then, rotations were shorter and there was far less emphasis on rest or load management.

He rarely came off the floor, even in overtime games, and rarely committed fouls that forced him out. Consequently, he dominated both the rebound and scoring charts while simply staying on the court.

That 3,882-minute mark has endured for decades not just because it’s impressive, but because the league has evolved. Modern NBA seasons involve deeper benches, stricter minute/health management and more strategic substitutions.

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: NBA)

Even the greatest modern stars seldom approach 40 minutes per game over a full season, making his record seem less like a benchmark and more like a relic from a different age of basketball.

He didn’t just set a one-time record — he appears multiple times among the top seasons in single-season minutes, reflecting an entire stretch when his stamina, role, and the league’s demands aligned perfectly.

Scoring in the NBA has long been a measure of dominance, a way for players to leave a permanent mark on the game. Across decades, certain athletes have elevated their offensive output to astonishing heights, turning entire seasons into showcases of sheer firepower.

Some seasons become legendary not just for wins, but for points racked up night after night. From mid-century pioneers to modern sharpshooters, the league has seen players rewrite the scoring narrative, setting marks that endure as benchmarks of talent and endurance.

The record books capture more than numbers; they tell stories of stamina, style and the relentless pursuit of points. Each historic season reflects a blend of strategy, opportunity and individual brilliance that defines how basketball greatness is measured over time.

Wilt Chamberlain | 4,029 Points | 1961-62 Season

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: @NBA)

If the NBA’s statistical records were a fortress, Wilt Chamberlain‘s 1961-62 season would be the towering, inviolable citadel. This campaign not only holds the all-time record for total points in a single season (4,029), but it marks the only instance in league history a player has eclipsed the 4,000-point threshold.

Playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, he did more than just average a celestial 50.4 points per game; he achieved the near-impossible feat of playing virtually every minute, averaging an astounding 48.5 minutes per game (more than the regulation 48, thanks to overtime periods).

This was the season the myth of “Wilt the Stilt” became tangible: it included the legendary 100-point game and 45 contests where he scored 50 or more. It wasn’t just a display of offensive prowess; it was a testament to superhuman durability and volume in an era lacking today’s nutritional science and specialized training.

The figure of 4,029 points is so astronomical that the second-highest total also belongs to him, falling almost 500 points short. He didn’t just set a record; he warped the limits of possibility in professional basketball.

Wilt Chamberlain | 3,586 Points | 1962-63 Season

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: @warriors)

Following his historic 4,000-point campaign, Wilt Chamberlain immediately proved his feat was no cosmic anomaly. With the franchise relocating and playing for the San Francisco Warriors, he returned in 1962-63 to log the second-most points in NBA history (3,586).

This massive total translated to a 44.8 points per game average—a mark that would be the career highlight for almost any other player, but for him, it was merely a “slight” dip.

Rather than slowing down, the titan simply maintained his offensive machinery at a blistering pace. He remained an unstoppable force in the paint, leveraging his size and strength before defenses truly adapted.

What is most compelling about this performance is that while the 1961-62 season earned the folklore status, this 3,586-point campaign solidified his reputation as the most dominant and consistent scorer of his generation, demonstrating he could relentlessly threaten his own high-water mark year after year.

Michael Jordan | 3,041 Points | 1986-87 Season

Michael Jordan (Source: Andy Lyons /Allsport)

We leap from the sheer power and height of the 1960s to the athletic explosion and grace of the modern era with the emergence of Michael Jordan in the 1986-87 season.

His 3,041 points not only represent the third-highest total of all time, but it remains the highest total achieved by any player in NBA history since the league’s merger with the ABA in 1976. Jordan is also the only player besides Chamberlain to ever surpass the 3,000-point mark.

Just 23 years old and coming back from a foot injury that marred the previous season, this was the year Air Jordan transformed from a superstar-in-the-making into a force of nature. He averaged 37.1 points per game, leading the league in scoring for the first time.

This was a scoring demonstration that seamlessly blended the mid-range jumper, spectacular drives, and deadly free-throw efficiency. This season served as the formal declaration that the league had found its new face—a player capable of reaching numerical altitudes that only the legendary Wilt had previously touched.

Wilt Chamberlain | 3,033 Points | 1960-61 Season

Wilt Chamberlain (Source: @NBA)

By his second year in the league, Wilt Chamberlain was no longer a novelty; he was a statistical problem for every opponent. The 1960-61 season, his second with the Philadelphia Warriors, saw him tally 3,033 points, establishing the fourth-highest total in NBA history.

This total translates to a punishing average of 38.4 points per game, a number that in almost any other era would have been an undisputed league record. This was a critical year of consolidation, proving his dominance was not a fluke.

The remarkable thing about this output is not just the volume, but the sheer consistency with which, early in his career, he pushed the boundaries of what was achievable.

In a league with less restrictive rules for interior play and a scarcity of defensive specialists built to handle his size, he made scoring over 35 points a night seem routine, laying the groundwork for his legendary record-breaking season the following year.

Wilt Chamberlain | 2,948 Points | 1963-64 Season

Closing out the list of the five highest-scoring seasons is Wilt Chamberlain once more, tallying 2,948 points in the 1963-64 season, his final full campaign with the San Francisco Warriors before his trade to Philadelphia. While this total is the lowest on this top-five list, it remains a nearly insurmountable statistical peak, generating an average of 36.9 points per game.

What makes this particular season unique is that it was a year when The Big Dipper (as he was known for his tendency to drop the ball in the basket rather than dunk) began to showcase a more rounded game.

Alongside his monstrous scoring volume, that season marked a personal high in total assists (403) at the time, signaling a conscious, and often criticized, effort to involve his teammates more.

Michael Jordan | 2,868 Points | 1987-88 Season

Michael Jordan (Source: Jonathan Daniel /Allsport)

Following his 3,000-point offensive assault in ’87, Michael Jordan returned in the 1987-88 season not just to maintain an incredible scoring volume, but to achieve defensive supremacy. His 2,868 points represent his second-highest single-season total, averaging a massive 35.0 points per game.

This season was a pinnacle of his career in terms of global impact. He not only dominated the scoring charts for the second consecutive year, but he also captured the Defensive Player of the Year award and his first career MVP.

Scoring nearly 2,900 points while simultaneously leading the league in steals and establishing himself as the premier defender at his position is an unprecedented feat. This campaign proved he could not only outscore everyone but do so with lethal efficiency without sacrificing any other facet of the game.

Kobe Bryant | 2,832 Points | 2005-06 Season

Kobe Bryant (Source: Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)

The 2005-06 season was a period of both personal hell and glory for Kobe Bryant. With the Los Angeles Lakers in a rebuilding phase, he was forced to carry an offensive load few players in history have shouldered.

His total of 2,832 points was the highest in the NBA during the 2000s and cemented his place in the historical volume elite. He averaged a frantic 35.4 points per game. This season is the epitome of the “Mamba Mentality”—an unrelenting focus that culminated in his legendary 81-point game against the Raptors.

His 2,832 points were built on a blend of post-ups, impossible mid-range jumpers, and an unwavering will to take and make any shot at any time. His total stands as a testament to the dedication to his craft and the ability of a modern-era player to challenge the scoring marks of the old school.

Bob McAdoo | 2,831 Points | 1974-75 Season

Bob McAdoo (Source: NBA)

In an era where the game centered on the paint and the mid-range jumper, Bob McAdoo represented the pinnacle of scoring efficiency for a big man. In the 1974-75 season, playing for the Buffalo Braves, he tallied 2,831 points, the highest total achieved by a center since the years of Wilt Chamberlain.

This monumental effort earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Averaging 34.5 points per game, he showcased unusual versatility for his height, utilizing a near-unblockable fadeaway jump shot.

His style was not the brute force of Wilt, but a fluid grace that allowed him to score with high precision. Achieving nearly 2,850 points without the benefit of the three-point line underscores the incredible skill and mastery of the post and mid-range game he possessed.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar | 2,822 Points | 1971-72 Season

The 1971-72 season was a display of total dominance for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then still Lew Alcindor) with the Milwaukee Bucks. His 2,822 points not only secured his second scoring title but also earned him his second MVP award. He averaged 34.8 points per game, a feat accomplished with astonishing efficiency.

The hallmark of his point production was the iconic Skyhook, a shot that was impossible to block. He led the league in field goal percentage that year at over 57%, an incredible figure for such a high-volume scorer.

This season was instrumental in establishing him as a worthy successor to Wilt’s hegemony, proving he could fuse historical point production with surgical accuracy—a trait that often separated the great centers.

James Harden | 2,818 Points | 2018-19 Season

James Harden (Source: Tom Pennington/Getty Images)

James Harden and his 2018-19 season represent a case study in modern scoring, centered on analytics and rule exploitation. His 2,818 points placed him as the leading scorer of the 21st century after Bryant, achieving an average of 36.1 points per game. This is the highest season average since Jordan’s aforementioned 1986-87 peak.

He turned basketball into a high-efficiency equation. His arsenal was built on the step-back three-pointer and an unparalleled ability to draw fouls and capitalize from the free-throw line.

His memorable streak of 32 consecutive games with 30 or more points was not just a record of consistency but a demonstration of the offensive burden he carried in Houston, forcing defenses to rewrite their playbooks.

Rick Barry | 2,775 Points | 1966-67 Season

Rick Barry (Source: NBA)

Rick Barry‘s 1966-67 season with the San Francisco Warriors stands as one of the most explosive scoring displays by a young player in history. Achieving 2,775 points in his second professional season, he led the league with a scorching 35.6 points per game—the highest average by a non-center until Michael Jordan arrived two decades later.

His scoring was defined by a unique blend of elegance and intensity. Known for his unorthodox underhand free-throw technique, he was a relentless driver and a masterful shooter from the perimeter (before the three-point line).

This performance powered the Warriors to the Finals and demonstrated that a forward could challenge the scoring hierarchy dominated by centers. He was aggressive, precise, and unstoppable, solidifying his reputation as one of the game’s greatest pure scorers.

Michael Jordan | 2,753 Points | 1989-90 Season

Michael Jordan (Source: Brian Bahr /Allsport)

In the 1989-90 season, just one year before the Chicago Bulls dynasty began, Michael Jordan delivered another phenomenal scoring year, logging 2,753 points. This total, which led the league in scoring for the fourth consecutive year, translated to a robust average of 33.6 points per game.

This was arguably Jordan’s most physically demanding scoring season as he adjusted to Phil Jackson’s triangle offense, which initially required him to score more in isolation before the team structure solidified. It was a season of transition where he continued his offensive domination, showcasing refined post moves and a wider array of mid-range jumpers.

While perhaps less spectacular than his 3,000-point peak, this volume scoring season was crucial, proving he could still carry a massive offensive load while slowly transitioning to the team-oriented system that would bring championships.

Nate Archibald | 2,719 Points | 1972-73 Season

The 1972-73 season belongs uniquely to Nate Archibald. Playing for the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, Archibald became the only player in NBA history to lead the league in both points and assists in the same season. His total of 2,719 points was achieved despite his small stature (6’1″), translating to an astonishing 34.0 points per game.

His scoring was a blend of blinding speed and deceptive power. He attacked the basket relentlessly, finishing layups and drawing fouls with remarkable consistency, all while navigating a league dominated by much taller players.

This was a legendary individual achievement, proving that volume scoring was not exclusive to the giants of the era. ‘Tiny’ Archibald was a scoring machine and a floor general rolled into one, setting a dual-record that remains unbroken.

Elgin Baylor | 2,719 Points | 1962-63 Season

Elgin Baylor (Source: NBA)

Elgin Baylor‘s 1962-63 season is a stunning example of prolific scoring often lost in the shadow of Wilt Chamberlain’s concurrent 3,586-point output. He matched Archibald’s total with 2,719 points for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging a breathtaking 34.0 points per game.

Baylor was a revolutionary scorer, famous for his mid-air acrobatics and ability to change direction and release point, inventing moves that later inspired players like Julius Erving and Michael Jordan.

Achieving such a high-volume total while maintaining an incredibly disruptive schedule speaks volumes about his sheer talent and commitment. He was, quite simply, an offensive genius ahead of his time.

Wilt Chamberlain | 2,707 Points | 1959-60 Season

Our final entry returns to where the scoring saga began: Wilt Chamberlain‘s 1959-60 rookie season. Playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, he immediately established himself as a force of nature, compiling 2,707 points—a record for a rookie that still stands today.

He averaged an incredible 37.6 points per game in his very first year. This campaign was the first seismic shock he delivered to the NBA. He didn’t just break the rookie scoring record; he obliterated the previous all-time season scoring record (held by Bob Pettit) by over 500 points.

This total is a foundational piece of his legacy, showing that his unprecedented scoring wasn’t something he built up to, but rather the default setting of his game from the moment he stepped onto the court. It was the moment the league realized it had to fundamentally change its rules to deal with The Big Dipper.

A former Los Angeles Lakers legend left Wilt Chamberlain out of the GOAT NBA debate.
One of the debates that will endure across generations is who deserves to be considered among the greatest of all time in the NBA. As the league evolves, more names will inevitably enter the conversation. Despite the passing decades, Wilt Chamberlain continues to be viewed by many as one of the most dominant forces in league history. However, a fellow Los Angeles Lakers legend doesn’t see it that way.

Shaquille O’Neal has never been one to hold back a bold opinion, and his latest take on Chamberlain is reigniting the GOAT conversation. During a recent episode of The Big Podcast, the topic turned to all-time greats—and O’Neal quickly excluded Chamberlain from the top tier. His reasoning was short and direct: “He only had two.”

That brief comment set off one of the most polarizing exchanges in recent memory. Shaq’s argument leaned heavily on championship rings—a metric many players, analysts, and fans use as the ultimate measuring stick for greatness.

Chamberlain, despite his jaw-dropping stats and unmatched physical dominance, finished his career with just two NBA titles—one with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1967 and another with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972.

Shaq speaks onstage during Warner Bros.

Still, Chamberlain’s résumé is nothing short of astonishing. He won two MVP awards, claimed seven scoring titles, led the league in rebounds 11 times, and even led in assists once—something no other center has ever accomplished.

He remains the only player in NBA history to average over 50 points per game in a single season (50.4 in 1961–62), and of course, he famously scored 100 points in a game that same year. Across his 14-year career, he earned 13 All-Star selections, 10 All-NBA honors, and made two All-Defensive Teams.

But for Shaq, the debate comes down to a simple distinction: he doesn’t believe dominance automatically equals greatness. While he continues to respect Chamberlain’s physical dominance and historic statistical output, O’Neal draws a clear line between being dominant and being the greatest of all time.

Walt Frazier, an icon of the New York Knicks, has weighed in on the NBA’s never-ending GOAT debate.
A superstar with the New York Knicks for a decade, Walt Frazier won two championships and earned a reputation as one of the greatest players of his era. Now retired, Clyde shared his view on who deserves the title of greatest NBA player of all time.

“If I had to choose one guy? I would say Kareem,” Frazier said in a 2008 interview with Slam Magazine. It’s a logical pick from the Knicks icon, who spent years going up against Abdul-Jabbar in battles against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

During that stretch, Abdul-Jabbar won one NBA title with the Bucks in 1971 and five league MVPs. He later captured five more championships with the Lakers between 1980 and 1988, along with a sixth MVP award—by then, Frazier had already retired.

Clyde praised Kareem’s dominance across all aspects of the game: “He won at every level. He dominated in this game. He has six rings. He has the scoring title without even trying,” Frazier said, before comparing him to another Lakers legend, Wilt Chamberlain. “If he had Wilt’s mindset, he would have had 50K points. He was very team-oriented in what he did.”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987.

Frazier says Jordan isn’t the GOAT

Frazier has repeatedly made it clear that he doesn’t place Michael Jordan at the top of the all-time list. Instead, he’s often highlighted legends from earlier eras, while pointing to what he sees as media-driven bias surrounding the Chicago Bulls legend.

" title="Knicks legend Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier reveals the secret behind his NBA success" publication_id="BUS#/nba/knicks-legend-walt-clyde-frazier-reveals-the-secret-behind-his-nba-success">

“He had exposure. At the time Jordan played, the NBA was bigger than football. Ratings were higher than football. That’s why they say he is the greatest,” Clyde said during a 2024 appearance on The Buster Show.

“They talk about Jordan, how many times he’s scored 50, 60 points,” the Knicks legend added. “38 times? Wilt Chamberlain did that like 138 times… Who saw Wilt Chamberlain? How many people are alive that saw him play? It’s the same thing with the Heisman trophy; the guys on the West Coast weren’t winning it because we were sleeping. In the East, when they’re playing, the people that vote are sleeping.”

Frazier compares Jordan with Russell, Chamberlain and Robertson

In the same conversation, Frazier expanded on why he believes Jordan falls short of other all-time greats in certain key areas. “I always say, what’s the criteria,” he asked. “If you’re talking about the most dominant, Wilt Chamberlain. The guy has all the records. You’re talking about versatility, Oscar Robertson, a guy who almost averaged a triple-double almost for his whole career. You talk about winning, it’s Bill Russell. The man has 13 world championships,” Clyde explained.

“Michael Jordan is not the leading scorer in the history of the game. He’s not the winningest player in the history of the game. He’s not the most versatile player in the history of the game. How could you say he’s the greatest player?” Frazier concluded.

Frazier defends Wilt Chamberlain’s legacy

Though he named Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the greatest ever, Frazier has always spoken highly of Wilt Chamberlain. In a 2000 interview with Slam Magazine, he pushed back against the notion that Chamberlain’s lack of championships should hurt his legacy. “Some have suggested that Wilt was not the greatest player ever because he only won two titles, as opposed to Jordan’s six. This is simply unfair,” Walt said.

He then pointed to the unique challenges Wilt faced during his prime: “If it weren’t for the Celtics dynasty, Wilt would likely have ended up with nine rings,” Frazier argued. “Jordan had no true rival.”

The remarkable career of Walt Frazier

Frazier’s opinion carries weight given the impact he had during his playing days. Selected with the fifth overall pick in the 1967 Draft, the point guard launched a storied career with the Knicks that included the franchise’s only two championships, in 1970 and 1973.

After 10 seasons in New York—where he earned seven All-Star selections, four All-NBA First Team honors, and seven All-Defensive First Team nods—Clyde finished his career with two seasons on the Cleveland Cavaliers before retiring in 1979 at age 34.

Since then, he’s received numerous accolades: his No. 10 jersey was retired by the Knicks, he was named to the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.

While Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain have cemented their status as true NBA legends, Hakeem Olajuwon believes that there is a player currently on the Los Angeles Clippers who matches their impressive talent.
Throughout NBA history, certain players have etched their names into the annals of the league. Wilt Chamberlain was among the first, capturing two championships and four MVP awards. Likewise, Michael Jordan ascended to legendary status with six championships, setting the standard for greatness. Despite their iconic stature, Hakeem Olajuwon made a surprising comparison in 2020 between a Clippers player and these all-time greats.

“Look at his statistics. He’s (James Harden) a player to the level of Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. It’s something unbelievable in this era. There’s no question about James’ ability as a champion. I think it’s just a matter of time. Any player you put with James Harden, it will work. Because James is such a complete player,” Hakeem Olajuwon said back in 2020, via SportsTalk 790.

James Harden, often the subject of bold comparisons among NBA fans, has undeniably proven himself one of the league’s most talented players. Over the course of 1,151 games, he has consistently averaged 24.2 points, along with 5.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists. His exceptional scoring ability made him the league’s leading scorer for three consecutive seasons, marking the pinnacle of his career.

Although Harden has yet to secure an NBA championship, he went on to become a Houston Rockets legend. During his nine-year tenure with the franchise, he had impressive performances, averaging 29.6 points per game.

James Harden’s unexpected move helped Clippers land Brook Lopez and Bradley Beal

To enhance their roster’s competitiveness, the Los Angeles Clippers have added two seasoned NBA veterans: Brook Lopez and Bradley Beal. This move solidifies their position as one of the league’s oldest teams. Despite this age factor, enthusiasm is running high among fans, who view the Clippers as strong contenders in the short term. Notably, James Harden’s decision played a significant role in bringing these two players to Los Angeles.

In a strategic move, Clippers’ president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, announced that James Harden opted to decline his player option to renegotiate a lower contract. This decision facilitated the arrival of both Bradley Beal and Brook Lopez in Los Angeles. Harden’s initiative underscores his deep commitment to the team and his burning ambition to secure his first NBA championship, aiming to solidify his legacy before retirement.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Wilt Chamberlain once spoke out and criticized the alleged advantage Michael Jordan received from NBA rules that were supposedly tailored to favor him.
Wilt Chamberlain is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, and a true icon of the Los Angeles Lakers. Some even place him atop the all-time rankings. That debate often circles back to comparisons with Michael Jordan. But there was a moment when Chamberlain openly criticized Jordan, suggesting that league rules were altered to benefit him rather than challenge him.

During the 1997 NBA All-Star Game luncheon, an unforgettable exchange reportedly took place between Chamberlain and Jordan. As the story goes, Wilt leaned in and delivered a pointed comment that has echoed through basketball history.

“Just remember, Michael, when you played, they changed the rules of basketball to make it easier for you to dominate. When I played, they changed the rules to make it harder for me,” Chamberlain said.

Wilt wasn’t exaggerating. The NBA literally modified rules to curb his dominance. In 1964, the league widened the lane from 12 feet to 16 feet — a change widely known as the “Wilt Rule.” This forced Chamberlain farther from the basket, limiting his ability to camp near the rim and score at will.

That wasn’t all. The league began enforcing offensive goaltending more strictly, targeting Wilt’s unique ability to tip in shots above the cylinder. Additionally, the NBA altered the inbounding rule to prevent him from jumping over defenders, catching inbounds passes mid-air, and dunking them before anyone could react.

Now compare that to the Jordan era. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the NBA began tightening its enforcement of hand-checking on the perimeter. This gave guards like Jordan more space to operate and reduced the physical resistance from defenders.

By the mid-1990s, hand-checking was nearly eliminated above the free-throw line, opening up isolation scoring even more. Defensive rules also changed in Jordan‘s favor — illegal defense restrictions meant that defenders couldn’t play zone or roam too far from their assignment. The result? Pure one-on-one matchups, tailor-made for an elite scorer like Jordan.

While both eras presented unique challenges, Chamberlain’s claim remains a compelling talking point in the never-ending debate over who truly faced the tougher road to greatness.

Wilt Chamberlain was one of the greatest players in NBA history, and his accomplishments proved that raw talent can transcend any era. That’s why Bucks legend Oscar Robertson once said Chamberlain could have dominated in any generation.
Have you ever thought about what it takes to score 100 points in a single NBA game? Only one player has ever accomplished that feat: Wilt Chamberlain. The Hall of Famer remains the only player in league history to reach the century mark in a game, a record set in 1962. The closest anyone has come since is Kobe Bryant, who dropped 81 points in 2006. That legendary performance is just one reason why Oscar Robertson once said Chamberlain could have dominated in any era.

Born on August 21, 1936, Chamberlain was a once-in-a-generation talent. Standing 7-foot-1, his combination of size, athleticism, and skill, especially during his years with the Philadelphia Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers, has led former players to claim he could outshine stars from any era.

That’s why, in a 2024 appearance on All The Smoke, Robertson reaffirmed his belief that Chamberlain would have been dominant regardless of the era. “Wilt carried the NBA that year [1961–62 season]. They don’t say much about it. I think he could play in any NBA era and dominate,” the Bucks legend said, even when comparing Chamberlain to greats like Jordan, James, and Kobe.

Chamberlain’s résumé backs up that claim. He averaged an astonishing 50.4 points per game during the 1961–62 season, something no other player has ever done. And if that stat alone doesn’t speak volumes, consider this: he was one of the few players in NBA history to go an entire season without fouling out.

Former Los Angeles Laker Wilt Chamberlain addresses the media at a press conference before the NBA All-Star Game at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio.

Chamberlain’s life beyond basketball

Chamberlain shared a close friendship with Bill Russell. The two spent a great deal of time together off the court, but their relationship soured after a misunderstanding stemming from a playoff game in the late 1960s. Russell initially accused Chamberlain of backing out of the final game in a series, but later learned that the claims were unfounded.

In 1990, Chamberlain released his autobiography, A View From Above, where he shared personal stories and lesser-known aspects of his life and career. Among the revelations was his exceptional talent for beach volleyball, a sport he pursued passionately after his NBA days.

Records and achievements

Chamberlain wasn’t just a statistical marvel, he was also a winner. He captured two NBA championships and earned numerous individual honors, including four MVP awards (three of them consecutively). He still holds the record for the most rebounds in a single game (55) and remains the only player to score over 4,000 points in a season. For comparison, the next closest was Michael Jordan, who scored just over 3,000 in a single campaign.

Some of his other unmatched records include:

Most minutes per game in a single season: 45.8

Franchise scoring leader for the Warriors: 17,783 points

Anchored the Lakers’ record 33-game winning streak

Most free throws made in a single game: 28

Most field goals made in a single game: 36

In addition to his records, Chamberlain earned an impressive list of accolades:

13× NBA All-Star

7× Scoring Champion

11× Rebounding Champion

1967–68 Assist Champion

2× NBA Champion

10× All-NBA selection

2× All-Defensive Team

1959–60 Rookie of the Year

1971–72 Finals MVP
