Yaroslava Shvedova competed on the professional circuit for more than 15 years and, after retiring, served as captain of Kazakhstan’s Billie Jean King Cup team.
Russia have produced countless great tennis players over the years, both men and women, including names like Maria Sharapova, Maria Kirilenko, Anastasia Myskina, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

From the same generation as Sharapova came Yaroslava Shvedova, born on September 12, 1987, in Moscow, back when the Soviet Union was still standing. Shvedova developed a passion for tennis at a young age, delivering strong performances on the national stage that paved the way for her professional career.

Like many Russian players, her preferred surface was hard courts, especially indoors. She made her WTA debut in 2005 and captured her only singles title in 2007, though her greatest success would later arrive in doubles.

A strong singles career

After about a year and a half adjusting to the tour, Shvedova captured her lone WTA singles title in February 2007. She claimed the trophy in Bangalore, India, defeating Italy’s Mara Santangelo 6-4, 6-4 in the final. While her biggest achievements would later come in doubles, she continued competing at a solid level in singles.

In 2015, she reached another singles final in Bogota, though she fell short against Brazil’s Teliana Pereira. Shvedova achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 25 in 2012.

Success in doubles

Alongside her singles career, Shvedova built an outstanding résumé in doubles. She captured 13 WTA titles in the discipline and climbed as high as World No. 3 in 2016. Her biggest triumphs came in 2010, when she partnered with American Vania King to win both Wimbledon and the US Open. In addition to her two Grand Slam titles, Shvedova also reached three other major finals, cementing her status as one of the top doubles players of her generation.

The match that made history

One of Shvedova’s most remarkable achievements came at Wimbledon in 2012, when she produced one of the rarest feats in tennis — a “Golden Set”. Facing Italy’s Sara Errani in the third round, the Kazakhstani won the opening set 6–0 without dropping a single point.

The flawless set lasted just 15 minutes and consisted of 24 consecutive points won by Shvedova. She went on to close out the match 6–0, 6–4, before falling in the next round to Serena Williams in three sets.

Four years without a win

By 2017, Shvedova’s career had begun to decline, marked by injuries, time away from the tour, and the challenges of balancing tennis with motherhood after giving birth to twins. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated her attempts to make a full return.

Her perseverance finally paid off at the 2021 WTA 1000 event in Rome. In the first round, she rallied past Martina Trevisan 0–6, 7–6, 7–6 to end a four-year drought without a main-draw victory on the WTA Tour. Just months later, in October of that same year, Shvedova announced her retirement, closing the book on a long and accomplished career.

Captain of Kazakhstan’s Billie Jean King Cup team

After retiring, Shvedova remained involved in the sport. From 2022 to 2023, she served as captain of Kazakhstan’s Billie Jean King Cup team, the premier women’s international competition. In that role, she guided top players such as Elena Rybakina and Yulia Putintseva.

Although born in Moscow, Shvedova chose to represent Kazakhstan beginning in 2008. Under that flag, she achieved the greatest successes of her career, including her two Grand Slam doubles titles.

Known for his booming serve, Kevin Anderson battled injuries for much of his career, but he never considered stepping away from the sport that defined his life.
Kevin Anderson’s story is one of grit, perseverance, and resilience. Towering at nearly 6-foot-8, armed with one of the most feared serves of his generation, and driven by an unshakable mindset, the South African rose to the top 5 in the ATP rankings, contested unforgettable battles at Wimbledon with Roger Federer, and endured the setbacks of injuries that ultimately pushed him into retirement. Along the way, he even found himself making headlines off the court — including a surprising donation tied to a lawsuit involving Alexander Zverev.

Born in Johannesburg in 1986, Anderson picked up a tennis racket at the age of six while also competing in track and field. By the time he turned pro in 2007, his rise was rapid. Within four years, he had cracked the top 50, and by 2015, he was entrenched inside the world’s top 10.

His game revolved around a thunderous serve and a knack for disrupting opponents on hard courts and grass. Few knew this better than Tomas Berdych and Stan Wawrinka, two of his most frequent rivals, who had to endure 12 and nine career matchups against him, respectively.

But just as Anderson seemed poised to cement his place among the elite, his body began to betray him. In 2016, injuries dropped him to No. 74 in the rankings. At Roland Garros in 2017, he was forced to retire mid-match due to exhaustion — a low point that could have derailed his career for good.

Kevin Anderson leaves the court after retiring against Marcin Cilic at 2017 Roland Garros. (Adam Pretty/Getty Images)

Instead, it became a turning point. Later that season, he reached his first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open, falling to Rafael Nadal but proving he belonged on the game’s biggest stages.

2018: The defining season

Anderson’s career-defining run came in 2018. He captured two titles, surged into the top 5, and reached the Wimbledon final after producing some of the most memorable matches in tournament history.

First, he survived a marathon against John Isner that lasted 6 hours and 36 minutes — the second-longest match in Wimbledon history — ending 26-24 in the fifth set. Just days earlier, he had stunned Roger Federer in the quarterfinals, rallying to win 13-11 in the fifth.

It was his only career victory over Federer, and it came with monumental significance: Federer never won Wimbledon again, with his 2017 triumph standing as his last at the All England Club.

Kevin Anderson and Roger Federer embrace at the net following their 2018 Wimbledon. (Michael Steele/Getty Images)

That summer cemented Anderson’s place in tennis lore, but the physical toll was immense. Soon after, his body began to break down again. Multiple knee surgeries, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, kept him from finding consistent form. By 2022, at age 35, Anderson decided it was time to walk away.

In an emotional letter announcing his retirement, he wrote: “There were so many people who helped me along the way, and believed that a kid from South Africa could fulfill his dreams”. Anderson finished his career with seven ATP titles and two Grand Slam final appearances. His last match came in Miami in 2022, a loss to Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerúndolo.

Life beyond tennis: courses, guitars, and donations

Off the court, Anderson always showed diverse interests. During his 2016 injury struggles, he launched a tennis instruction website. He also famously brought his guitar along on tour, once even strumming during a physiotherapy session.

But his most surprising off-court moment came in 2024. No longer an active player, Anderson and his wife donated a fortune to a crowdfunding campaign organized by journalist Ben Rothenberg. The initiative aimed to cover legal costs in Rothenberg’s defense against a defamation lawsuit filed by Alexander Zverev, who had been accused of domestic abuse by former partner Olga Sharypova.

Eugenie Bouchard, the 2014 Wimbledon finalist who was once Canada’s top-ranked player, has announced her retirement from professional tennis. The 31-year-old confirmed she will step away from the sport after one final appearance at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal, the city where her tennis journey began.

“You’ll know when it’s time. For me, it’s now,” Bouchard wrote in an Instagram post confirming her decision. The National Bank Open, which responded publicly to her announcement, will serve as the final stop in a career that began with soaring potential and later came to be defined by its sharp decline.

Bouchard’s rise to international stardom was rapid. After a successful junior career that included a Wimbledon girls’ singles title in 2012, she made her Grand Slam debut in 2013 and immediately caught attention with third-round runs at Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as a second-round showing at Roland Garros. But it was 2014 that transformed Bouchard from promising prospect into household name.

Her 2014 breakout season

That year, she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and French Open, beating a string of higher-ranked opponents and showcasing a brand of fearless, aggressive tennis. By the time she arrived at Wimbledon as the 13th seed, Bouchard was already being talked about as one of the faces of the next generation.

Eugenie Bouchard celebrates a point (Getty Images)

At SW19, she played the best tennis of her career. She cruised through the draw without dropping a set, defeating players like Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep en route to her first Grand Slam final. There, she faced 2011 champion Petra Kvitova. Although Bouchard started strongly, Kvitova’s power and experience proved decisive. After taking the first set 6-3, the Czech dominated the second 6-0 to win her second Wimbledon crown.

Despite the one-sided nature of the final, Bouchard left London optimistic. “I am very motivated to win a Grand Slam,” she said in her post-match press conference. “It’s been, you know, a lifelong dream of mine. I feel like I’ve taken steps in the right direction to achieve that.”

During her time on the tennis tour, Bouchard earned $6.9 million in career prize money, placing her among the highest earners of her generation, and reached the World No. 5 in October 2014. But what looked like the beginning of a breakthrough era for Bouchard soon turned into a long and frustrating struggle.

Injuries and time off tennis

She returned to a Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2015 Australian Open, where she lost to Maria Sharapova, but her results quickly declined. She also struggled with several injuries.

Bouchard underwent shoulder surgery and sustained a concussion at the 2015 US Open after slipping in a locker room. That incident led to a legal battle with the United States Tennis Association, which was eventually resolved through a settlement.

Eugenie Bouchard suffered from several injuries (Getty Images)

Her last notable showing at a major came at the 2020 French Open, where she reached the third round. That marked her best result at Roland Garros since her semifinal run in 2014. After that, Bouchard’s appearances became sporadic, and her time on the sport’s biggest stages began to fade.

Bouchard is among a small group of current and former tennis players who have embraced the growing popularity of pickleball. She climbed as high as World No. 17 in the pickleball rankings. While she said she wasn’t necessarly “burned out” from tennis, she wanted a “new opportunity”, as she told Associated Press.

Her most recent years

In recent years, she tried to work her way back by entering Grand Slam qualifying tournaments, but those efforts ended in disappointment. From 2021 through 2025, Bouchard played five qualifying events at the majors and failed to reach the main draw in all of them.

For Bouchard, the story will end where it began. She will step away from tennis in front of her home crowd in Montreal, where she first emerged as a rising star. The Canadian Open will serve as a final tribute to a player who helped raise the profile of tennis in her country and inspired many to pick up a racquet.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner faced off in the last two Grand Slam finals—Roland Garros and Wimbledon—and now share an impressive record.
Just as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic once dominated the ATP Tour and collected most of the Grand Slam titles over the past two decades, the new landscape of men’s tennis appears to be increasingly shaped by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. That shift is underscored by a remarkable record the two have achieved following their recent showdowns in the finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

According to Mister Only Tennis, an X account known for detailed tennis stats, Alcaraz and Sinner now rank first and third, respectively, in terms of Grand Slam final win percentage in the Open Era, which began in 1968. This ranking includes only players who have reached at least five major finals.

It is topped by Australian legend Rod Laver, who posted an 83.3% success rate by winning five of six finals—Wimbledon 1968 and all four majors in 1969—losing only at Roland Garros in 1968. Notably, Laver also captured six additional major titles during the amateur era.

Tied with Laver at the top—excluding those amateur titles—is Alcaraz. The Spanish star has also won five of his first six Grand Slam finals (US Open 2022, Wimbledon 2023 and 2024, and Roland Garros 2024 and 2025), with his only loss coming at this year’s Wimbledon final.

Jannik Sinner holds trophy after winning Wimbledon

Sinner sits just below with an 80% win rate in Grand Slam finals, having claimed titles at the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, the US Open in 2024, and Wimbledon in 2025. His lone defeat came at Roland Garros earlier this year. In fact, Alcaraz and Sinner handed each other their first career losses in Grand Slam finals this season—evidence of the razor-thin margin between them at the top of the sport.

Another impressive benchmark for Sinner and Alcaraz

What makes these achievements even more impressive is the age of the two players. At just 23 and 22 years old, respectively, Sinner and Alcaraz are already cementing their place among tennis’s elite, posting statistics that compare favorably with some of the game’s all-time greats.

In addition to their Grand Slam finals efficiency, both players rank among the best in ATP Tour final win percentage since the start of the Open Era, based on players who have contested at least 25 finals.

Per Mister Only Tennis, Thomas Muster leads that list with an 81.6% mark (44–10), followed by Nikolay Davydenko at 75% (21–7). Alcaraz matches Davydenko’s percentage—though he has done so at a far younger age. Sinner follows closely with a 74.1% win rate (20–7). Others rounding out the top group include Thomas Enqvist (73.1%), Pete Sampras (72.7%), and Rod Laver (71.9%).

Former World No. 1 Jimmy Connors didn’t hold back when offering his take on Carlos Alcaraz’s disappointing performance in his four-set loss to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final.
Jannik Sinner captured his first Wimbledon title with an impressive four-set win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Although the Italian dropped the opening set, he rebounded quickly, took control of the match, and lifted the trophy in commanding fashion. Meanwhile, Alcaraz delivered a performance to forget.

In the third and fourth sets, the Spaniard appeared mentally blocked and struggled to find solutions. As Sinner began pulling away, Alcaraz grew visibly frustrated. “From the baseline, he’s being much better than me—much better,” the 22-year-old told his team from the court, a rare emotional outburst for a player known for his composure.

Alcaraz’s reaction drew criticism from tennis great Jimmy Connors. The former World No. 1 and two-time Wimbledon champion called out the Spaniard during his Advantage Connors podcast, arguing that a player of his caliber should never publicly reveal that kind of vulnerability.

“It’s not acceptable. I don’t know if I would’ve ever admitted something like that,” Connors said. “No matter what happens, you’ve got to go out there, mix things up, or try something different“.

Connors, who won eight Grand Slam singles titles and 125 career trophies including doubles, criticized Alcaraz’s lack of a backup plan when his game wasn’t working. “I know I say that a lot but if your game number one is not winning you have to figure something else out. I got my a— handed to me a couple of times at Wimbledon too. Everybody does,” he added.

Although Connors has often praised Alcaraz in the past, he didn’t hold back this time. “But if you are going to beat me you are going to have to beat me.
Alcaraz reflects on his performance

Alcaraz acknowledged Sinner’s superior tactics, especially from the baseline, and admitted that he struggled to respond in key moments. “It was all about him pushing me to the limit in every point,” Alcaraz said after the match. “Mentally, it’s really tough to maintain. When you see the opponent playing such good tennis, I didn’t know what to do“.

He also pointed to the Italian’s advantage on second serves. “From the baseline, he was better than me. The big key was the second serves. He was returning really well and then attacking the second ball. It’s difficult when you’re defending all the time,” he continued.

“I just gave him a lot of free points on his second serve. He has a big first serve, but on second serves, I needed to do more. I had to be better with those points. But it was a great match—I think the level was really high,” he added.

The modern rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner adds another chapter at Wimbledon—this time with prestige, ranking implications, and a massive payday on the line.
Tennis fans are in for a blockbuster showdown this Sunday as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner meet once again in a Grand Slam final—this time on the hallowed grass of Wimbledon.

It’s their fourth consecutive final clash, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Alcaraz looks to defend his back-to-back Wimbledon titles from 2023 and 2024, while Sinner is aiming to dethrone the Spaniard and solidify his hold on the ATP’s No. 1 ranking.

Both stars arrive at the final with momentum. Sinner delivered a dominant straight-sets win over former World No.1 Novak Djokovic (6-3, 6-3, 6-4) in the semifinals.

While Alcaraz had to dig deep to overcome American Taylor Fritz in four sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6). But beyond legacy and rankings, Sunday’s final also features one of the most lucrative prize pools of the year.

Record prize money on the line

Wimbledon increased its total prize fund by 8.2% in 2025 compared to last year, setting up a record-setting payday for both finalists. Just by reaching the final, both Alcaraz and Sinner are guaranteed $2,061,880 in earnings and 1,300 ATP points.

The champion, however, will walk away with a staggering $4,069,500—a record for the tournament. Should Alcaraz claim the title, he will surpass the amount he earned in 2024 for winning the same event.

Meanwhile, a win for Sinner would add another major payday to his 2025 haul, which already includes $3.5 million from his Australian Open title earlier this year.

Rankings implications

While Sinner will retain his No. 1 ranking regardless of the result, the final carries weight in the broader ATP points race. Alcaraz must win to defend his 2024 title points and keep the pressure on the Italian in the fight for year-end supremacy.

By reaching the final, Jannik Sinner also joined an elite group.
Iga Swiatek dominated Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, securing a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory to match a historic Grand Slam record previously held by Steffi Graf.
Iga Swiatek entered the Wimbledon final as the clear favorite against Amanda Anisimova, but few expected such a dominant display. The Polish star cruised to a historic 6-0, 6-0 victory, matching a Grand Slam record previously set by the legendary Steffi Graf.

Anisimova had raised expectations after an impressive semifinal win over World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, but she couldn’t replicate that level of play in the final. Struggling with unforced errors, the American had no answers for Swiatek’s flawless performance.

With the win, Swiatek captured her first Wimbledon title and became just the second woman in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam final by a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline. The only other to do so was Graf, who defeated Natasha Zvereva with the same result in the 1988 French Open final.

Shutouts of this kind are virtually unheard of in WTA Grand Slam finals. In fact, the last time a Wimbledon final ended in a double bagel was back in 1911, when Dorothea Lambert Chambers beat Dora Boothby.

Swiatek reflects on Wimbledon breakthrough

After capturing the 2024 French Open, Swiatek hadn’t added another Slam title to her résumé—until now. Wimbledon had long been the one major that eluded her, with a previous best result of reaching the quarterfinals. But this year, she flipped the script.

“Honestly, I didn’t even dream [of winning Wimbledon]. It was just way too far, you know,” Swiatek admitted after the match. “I feel like I’m already an experienced player after winning the Slams before, but I never really expected this one”.

She credited her team—both new and longtime members—for believing in her throughout her journey. “I want to thank my team, because I feel like they believed in me more than I did. I want to thank my coach [Wim Fissette] who joined this year,” she continued.

“Obviously, with ups and downs, but right now we showed everybody that it’s working. Also to the team that has been with me for many years, I would be nowhere without you,” Swiatek added.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will face off this Sunday in the Wimbledon final.
With the era of the Big Three—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic—now in the past, the tennis world appears to be entering a new phase dominated by two rising stars: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. These two have been at the center of most major tournaments in recent times, and Wimbledon is no exception.

This Sunday, they’ll meet in the championship match at the year’s third Grand Slam. Jannik, playing in his first final at this level and chasing his first title on the grass of London, took down Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Carlos, meanwhile, defeated World No. 5 Taylor Fritz and now aims to claim his third consecutive title.

At Wimbledon, Alcaraz and Sinner will meet for the 13th time in their professional careers—undoubtedly one of their most significant showdowns yet. Not only is this a major tournament, but the winner will also take home a highly coveted title.

Their last three meetings have all come in finals. The most recent—and arguably the most important—was just a month ago at Roland Garros, where Alcaraz won a memorable five-set thriller. The Spanish star also triumphed in the previous two finals: the 2024 Rome Masters 1000 and the 2024 China Open. Their only other final came back in 2022, when the current World No. 1 defeated Carlos in straight sets at the ATP 250 event in Umag.

The full head-to-head between Alcaraz and Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz has clearly gained the upper hand over Jannik Sinner in their recent matchups. Of their 12 meetings, the Spaniard has won eight and lost only four. That edge has been built largely over the past two seasons, with five straight victories from 2024 to 2025.

In addition to the three finals mentioned above, Alcaraz also defeated Sinner in the semifinals of both Roland Garros and Indian Wells in 2024. To find Sinner’s last win, you have to go back to October 2023, when he beat Alcaraz in the semifinals in Beijing.

Before that, the rivalry had been more balanced, with Sinner earning wins in Miami 2023, Umag and Wimbledon 2022. Alcaraz, on the other hand, had prevailed in the 2021 Paris Masters 1000, the 2022 US Open, and 2023 Indian Wells.

The only previous Wimbledon clash between Sinner and Alcaraz

Sunday’s match will mark just the second time Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz face each other at Wimbledon. Their only previous meeting at the All England Club came in 2022, when both were still early in their ATP Tour journeys. That encounter happened in the round of 16, with the Italian taking the win in four sets. He would go on to lose to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

In a stunning display of dominance, Iga Swiatek overwhelmed Amanda Anisimova in the 2025 Wimbledon final, securing the championship with an emphatic 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Iga Swiatek delivered a commanding performance against American Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, capturing the championship title for this year’s tournament. After defeating the player who ousted the world’s No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, the social media sphere erupted with memes and reactions to Swiatek’s dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Expectations were high for Anisimova following her impressive performance against Sabalenka. However, fans were taken aback by her underwhelming display, as she suffered a swift defeat with a double 6-0 loss to Swiatek. Swiatek, who wasn’t initially considered a favorite due to her form at Roland Garros, showcased a remarkable turnaround in just 57 minutes.

Anisimova was plagued by a slew of unforced errors, a stark contrast to her previous match against world No. 8 Swiatek. The Polish player, competing at Wimbledon, exhibited a strong and focused mentality, delivering an outstanding performance with minimal mistakes.

With this victory, Swiatek clinched her first Wimbledon title, moving just one Australian Open title away from joining the elite group of players on the WTA circuit to achieve a career Grand Slam.

Swiatek sets records with first Wimbledon triumph

With a dominating performance at Wimbledon, Polish tennis sensation etched her name into the annals of tennis history, reaching a landmark previously achieved only by the legendary Steffi Graf during the Open Era of the WTA circuit. According to OptaAce, Swiatek became just the second player to capture a Grand Slam title with an extraordinary double 6-0 set scoreline.

Furthermore, Swiatek’s victory places her among an elite group of only eight players who have conquered Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces in professional tennis. She joins a pantheon of tennis greats alongside figures such as Graf, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Hana Mandlikova, solidifying her status as one of the sport’s premier talents.
