“I think the thing that Geno shares, and he will share it in press conferences, is that you’ve gotta live with her, because she’s so intelligent, you’ve got to live with some of the gambling that she does,” Miller said. “He shared some stories that, instead of locking and trailing, attacking and tracing a great player off of a screen, she shoots a gap to go make a momentum-changing steal in a game. And sometimes it doesn’t always work out.”

Still without Caitlin Clark, ‘Unrivaled,’ the new 3v3 league co-founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has signed another WNBA star: Alyssa Thomas. The 32-year-old Connecticut Sun forward is headed to Miami as the player No. 31.

Thomas, who is currently a free agent, has accepted the lucrative offer from the new league instead of her usual plan of going overseas during the offseason. In her 11-year career, the star has played in countries such as South Korea, China, Prague and Turkey.

In the inaugural season of Unrivaled, players will reportedly earn an average salary of more than $200,000, as well as getting equity rights. She joins other stars such as her teammates Alyssa Thomas and DiJonai Carrington, as well as Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese.

From Indiana Fever, Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull are the only players to have confirmed their participation in the league. Unrivaled will try a new 3v3 format

The league will consist of six teams, each made up of six players, competing in a 3v3 format. The teams will play in a round-robin format for the first six weeks, with the top four advancing to a two-week postseason. Additionally, a season-long 1v1 tournament will be held.

Collier shared on X that a selection committee will allocate players to teams based on position and skill, aiming to keep competition balanced. All the teams will be announced on November 20th. On the other hand, unlike standard FIBA rules, games will be played on a 70-by-50-foot court, with four quarters, a game clock, and a shot clock.

When does Unrivaled start?

The first season of Unrivaled will span eight weeks, beginning on January 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida. After six weeks of round-robin play, the top four teams will advance to a two-week postseason. Additionally, a 1v1 tournament will run throughout the season.

Ionescu previously competed against Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend. When asked about a potential 2-on-2 matchup featuring Curry and his former teammate Klay Thompson, Ionescu did not hesitate to name her ideal teammate.

“I mean, if I had to choose, I’d take Caitlin Clark on my team,” Ionescu said during an appearance on B1G Tailgate—a college football pregame show on the Big Ten Network—during its Week 11 episode from Oregon’s campus, where Ionescu played in college.

In last year’s three-point shooting competition, Curry emerged victorious, but Ionescu impressed by outperforming the rest of the contestants while shooting from the NBA three-point line. The event’s success has sparked discussions about reviving it this year.

Months after saying Caitlin Clark was being “targeted” by WNBA players, UConn Huskies women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma praised the Indiana Fever star for her trash talk, and saying that it is what “makes her good.”

“I think one of the things that make Caitlin Clark who she is, is the way she is with people. She connects with people and people connect with her,” he said. Before adding: “Now, she talks a lot of s*** on the court. Believe me.”

“People go ‘why is everyone beating Caitlin Clark,’ because she talks a lot of s*** on the court. That’s what makes her good. So she’s not like this angel walking out there and everybody else is beating her up. Nah. She has got a lot to say,” he explained.

These comments seemed to contradict what he said during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show,” in which he claimed that Clark was being “targeted” by her WNBA peers due to various factors, including her looks, reputation, and the disrespect shown to the WNBA by her fans.

“The delusional fan base that follows her disrespected the WNBA players by saying she’s gonna go in that league and tear it apart […] If you’re a WNBA player, or any kind of player, you’re going to say ‘I’m gonna make a statement.’ Targeted by society, by her looks, her reputation, by the disrespect they’ve shown to the league… There’s a huge target in this kid’s back,” he said.

While the WNBA is on pause, one question that remains unanswered during the offseason is what will Diana Taurasi do next. Will she retire or is she up to play another season? On Monday, the Phoenix Mercury veteran left fans wondering after a series of ads that seemed to address her future were released.

Taurasi published an Instagram post featuring several ads for the notes feature of the app with her face that included the emojis of one finger up and the ballerina, which presumably mean “one last dance.” Meanwhile, the caption reads: “Keep ‘em guessing.”

However, ESPN’s Michael Voepel claridied the rumors with a post on X: “The Instagram ad with Diana Taurasi was done before the WNBA season ended and has appeared elsewhere before today. It’s not intended as a ‘message’ about her future plans or anything else, her agent told ESPN.“

Two weeks ago, Taurasi told The Associated Press that she was going to take her time to decide whether she continues playing or not. “I don’t take retirement lightly. I know the minute I say it or announce it, whether it’s, you know, in a month or two months, I’m going to mean it,” she said.

The 42-year-old said that she was “in deep thought about it. I want to make the right decision, you know, and I’m just taking my time a little bit.” However, she added: “And you know, sometimes when the season ends, the last thing you want to think about is the next season.”

Diana Taurasi’s impressive career

Taurasi entered the league in 2004, and won that year’s WNBA Rookie of the Year award. With the Phoenix Mercury, she has won three championships (2007, 2009, 2014), and she has broken several records, including becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer and the first player to score 10,000 points in her career.
