Cristian Romero and Harry Maguire were involved in a tense moment following Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Manchester United in the 2025 UEFA Europa League final. It was Spurs’ first trophy in 17 years.
After the final whistle, Romero, who was named MVP of the match, made his way around the pitch to shake hands with opponents. When he approached Maguire, the Manchester United defender appeared to ignore him.
A short verbal exchange followed, with visible tension between the two. Romero continued on to embrace Diogo Dalot, but Maguire circled back and confronted the Argentine. Gesturing and speaking animatedly, Maguire seemed to reference a moment earlier in the match. Members of both teams’ staff intervened as the exchange became more heated.
Earlier in the game, the two defenders had clashed during a contentious moment that saw Maguire pick up a yellow card for a foul on Romero. The incident drew in several players from both sides.
Tottenham secured their victory through a 42nd-minute goal from Brennan Johnson, which took a touch off United defender Luke Shaw. The Premier League sides were closely matched for much of the game, but Spurs held firm in the second half, with Micky Van de Ven clearing a late effort from Rasmus Hojlund off the line.
First trophy in 17 years
Heung-min Son became the first Tottenham captain since Ledley King in 2008 to lift silverware, earning the club a spot in next season’s Champions League. It was also his first professional title.
While Spurs celebrated the end of a long trophy drought, the result confirmed a difficult end to the season for Manchester United. The club finished its worst ever Premier League campaign and will miss out on European competition next year.
