The 2026 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/march-madness">March Madness</a> begins on March 17 with the First Four games in Dayton. The opening matchups officially kick off the road to the national championship and mark the start of one of the most anticipated events.



Organized by the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">NCAA</a>, the tournament once again features 68 teams competing in a single-elimination bracket. After the First Four trims the field, the action quickly expands across the country with the First Round and Second Round games.



From there, the competition moves through the regional rounds before the remaining teams advance to the Final Four, with iconic arenas hosting games across several U.S. cities and the bracket drawing national attention.



<h2>2026 March Madness schedule</h2>



The 2026 March Madness schedule begins with the First Four on March 17–18 and runs through the national championship on April 6. It follows the traditional single-elimination format with teams competing across several rounds until a champion is crowned.

It was always going to be a long shot for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn Tigers</a> to make the 2026 March Madness bracket. Now, it’s been confirmed that there was no miracle. The writing was on the wall for the Tigers, and Selection Sunday in the NCAA only spelled out what no one in Toomer’s Corner wanted to hear. 



Auburn is the second team left out of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Because of its 17–16 overall record (7–11 in the SEC), Auburn didn’t make the cut for March Madness in 2026. Reaching the second round of the SEC Tournament and the program’s past season success wasn’t enough for the Tigers to convince the Selection Committee they deserved a spot.



During the Tigers’ first year without Bruce Pearl, they missed the NCAA Tournament. Auburn had made it into the 68-team bracket in each of the past four <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a> seasons. The last time Auburn’s season ended this early was in the 2020-21 campaign.



<h2>Auburn’s resume in NCAA Tournament</h2>



As the 2025-26 NCAA season comes to a close for the Tigers, the school in The Plains failed to secure its 15th March Madness appearance in program history. Auburn has yet to win its first NCAA Tournament. As it stands, the best the Tigers have done is reaching the Final Four in two occasions (2019 and 2025).

Out of every conference with multiple bids in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, the SEC reigns supreme. The Southeastern Conference has 10 representatives in the 68-team bracket. 



Closing out the podium is the Big Ten conference, with 9 programs, and the ACC and Big 12 with 8 schools each. The SEC could have added two more schools with Oklahoma and Auburn. The Sooners and Tigers were the first and second teams left out, respectively.

After missing recent games with a lower-body injury, his availability has become a key storyline ahead of the postseason opener. He has been one of the most important players during the 2025-26 season.



Now, as Tennessee begins its run, all eyes are on whether he will return to the court against Auburn. Many reports suggest the standout freshman is expected to play but remains officially listed as questionable.

He missed Tennessee’s previous two games while recovering from a right-leg injury, which raised doubts about his availability for the Volunteers’ postseason opener. However, the 6-foot-10 freshman practiced with the team in Nashville ahead of the matchup, a strong sign that he could be back in the lineup.



Even if he does play, his role may be limited. Reports suggest the coaching staff could monitor his minutes carefully as the team evaluates how his leg responds during live game action. 



He has been one of Tennessee’s most important players this season, averaging 17.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, so his presence could be a key factor in the matchup against Auburn.



<h2>What happened to Nate Ament?</h2>



Nate Ament suffered a right-leg injury during Tennessee’s game against Alabama on February 28, forcing him to miss multiple games before the SEC Tournament. It occurred during a scramble for a loose ball when an Alabama player dove into his leg, causing it to bend awkwardly.



Although he was able to walk off the court on his own, he was visibly in pain and did not return to the game. The injury sidelined him for Tennessee’s next two contests as the team chose to prioritize his recovery ahead of postseason play.

One of the best prospects in the recruiting class of 2026 is now off the board. Five-star guard Dylan Mingo is now committed to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/north-carolina">University of North Carolina</a> ahead of the 2026-27 college basketball season. Following his decision, the 6’4” talent issued an honest message aimed at his school, as well as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/duke">Duke</a> and Penn State.



As expected when it comes to making such a pivotal and career-altering decision, Mingo took his sweet time. Moreover, there was a plethora of reasons for him to choose the Tar Heels, which he went into in detail during his public announcement. Surprisingly, the Blue Devils had a say on the matter, as their recent loss in Chapel Hill may have been what tipped the scale for Mingo to join UNC.



“First of all, I chose North Carolina for North Carolina itself,” Mingo admitted in dialogue with ESPN’s “First Take”. “But definitely seeing everything after they won the game had a huge impact just on my decision. It’s so joyful. The players look so joyful. And you know the legacy of North Carolina; that was a dream of mine since I was a kid.”



<h2>Close second for Mingo</h2>



While North Carolina was always first on his mind, Mingo did contemplate other schools in the NCAA. He named his finalists as UNC, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/penn-state">Penn State</a>, Baylor, and Washington, but the former two were always the options generating the most buzz.

“I would say Penn State was second,” Mingo commented. “It was super hard to not play with your brother, to decline that option. I just felt like North Carolina [is] best for me right now.”

While UNC’s rich history in college basketball put it a peck above the rest, the prospect of joining his brother, Kayden, in State College was ever-present. <h2>What’s next?</h2>



North Carolina has come away with one of the gems of the 2026 recruiting class, cementing its place as a school to watch in the 2026–27 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season. Still, that is a long way off. 



As it stands, the focus in Chapel Hill is on finishing the current campaign strong and making a deep run in the ACC and NCAA tournaments.
