Real Madrid are coming off a season that fell short of their lofty standards. The Spanish giants want much more, especially given the talent they have on their roster. That desire for improvement has led to key signings in the transfer market and even a change on the bench. Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, the club officially introduced Argentine midfielder Franco Mastantuono, who surprised many by naming a Barcelona legend as the greatest player in history.

During his unveiling, the former River Plate midfielder repeatedly expressed his joy at joining what he called “the biggest club in the world.” But when asked to name the best player of all time, he did not choose any Real Madrid icon.

Before answering, Mastantuono noted that, because of his age, he never had the chance to watch club legend Alfredo Di Stefano in action. Then he delivered his verdict: The best player in the world for me is Messi. I’m Argentine, and I believe in recent years the best player has been him. I have nothing more to add.”

The 17-year-old went on to elaborate on his admiration for the Argentina captain: Messi meant a lot to Barcelona and to the Argentines who watched him play.” His response drew some applause, but also prompted a noticeable silence among the media in attendance.
