Inter Miami star Lionel Messi and his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, were caught on the jumbotron during Coldplay’s concert on Sunday night at Hard Rock Stadium. The couple appeared on the venue’s giant screen while attending the British band’s final U.S. stop on their Music of the Spheres World Tour.
As the camera focused on them, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin introduced the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner by singing, “Thanks for coming today to see our band play, the No. 1 sports person of all time.” The crowd responded with loud chants of “Messi! Messi!” as the footballer smiled and waved from the stands.
Messi, 38, appeared relaxed during the event. He shared photos on Instagram featuring his wife and their three children watching the concert from a private suite.
Messi joins Roger Federer as another athlete highlighted byMartin during a Coldplay concert. The former tennis star also received a shoutout from the Coldplay frontman as “the greatest tennis player of all time” while attending a show in Rome in 2024.
Messi comes from a one-match suspension
Messi had missed Inter Miami’s match the night before (a goalless draw against FC Cincinnati) due to a one-game suspension after skipping the MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas. He watched the match from the stands alongside Antonela and Rodrigo De Paul, who was recently unveiled as a new Inter Miami player.
Jordi Alba, another Miami star, also served a one-game suspension for missing the All-Star Game. The ruling, issued by MLS Commissioner Don Garber on July 25, reportedly left Messi “very upset,” according to Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas.
The time off may have offered Messi a chance to recharge. Since April 2, he had played nearly every minute in 22 of 23 matches, and the recent break came just days before the club resumes international competition.
