Aaron Judge has played alongside all kinds of teammates during his time in the Bronx, but some cases stand out—especially those who once showed flashes of becoming stars. That was the case with a New York Yankees pitcher who threw a perfect game in 2023, only to fall into a winless stretch ever since.
It was during the 2023 season that the Yankees witnessed the 24th perfect game in MLB history—and just the fourth in franchise history. The 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics came without Judge in the lineup, as he was sidelined with a toe injury and only played two games that month.
But even without Judge present, the glory of that night belonged to a pitcher who had already spent six seasons in pinstripes. His journey included missing part of the 2019 postseason and a 63-game suspension during the 2020 season due to domestic violence allegations.
Who was Judge’s teammate who threw a perfect game?
That pitcher was Domingo Germán, who not only authored the Yankees’ only perfect game of the 21st century but also did it in dominant fashion against the Athletics in front of 12,479 fans. Since that night, however, he hasn’t won a single MLB game.
After the perfect outing on June 28, Germán made five more appearances with the Yankees—two of them official losses, and three no-decisions, including a July 3 win over the Orioles. His last time sharing the field with Judge was July 31. He never pitched again for the Yankees after that.
Domingo Germán’s Career After the Yankees
After the 2023 season—where he became the eighth pitcher to throw a perfect game in the 21st century—Germán left the Yankees and joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024. But even there, he failed to record a single win.

He made six appearances without a decision and suffered one official loss on September 4 in what would become his final professional game: a 0-12 blowout loss to the Cubs. As of June 2025, Germán remains unsigned by any professional baseball team.
Who Are the Four Yankees to Throw a Perfect Game?
In addition to Germán, the other three Yankees pitchers to throw perfect games in franchise history all did so in the 20th century:
- David Cone in 1999, a 6-0 win over the Montreal Expos
- David Wells in 1998, tossing 120 pitches in a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Twins
- Don Larsen, who threw his historic perfect game in the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, a 2-0 victory at home
