The Los Angeles Lakers are not only building a roster to contend in the upcoming NBA season—they are also quietly preparing for the long-term future of the franchise. With Luka Doncic now expected to be the new face of the team, reports suggest the Lakers are looking ahead to a future that may no longer include LeBron James. For the first time in his tenure with the Lakers, James is on an expiring contract.
James’ time in Los Angeles might not officially end this offseason, but it could be approaching its final chapter. According to a Saturday report from NBA insider Marc Stein, the Lakers “prefer” to see James’ $52.6 million contract come off the books following the 2025-26 season.
That would mean the Lakers are prepared to let one of the game’s all-time greats walk away without compensation. “The Lakers’ widely presumed preferred scenario for their future is letting James’ contract drop off their books after the 2025-26 season,” Stein wrote.
Doncic’s arrival in Los Angeles has drastically shifted the trajectory of the franchise and has added a new wrinkle to the twilight of James’ historic career. James delivered an NBA title to the Lakers in 2020 and solidified his legacy with the team, but the front office appears ready to turn the page.
According to James’ agent Rich Paul, the four-time NBA champion “understands” the direction the franchise is heading but still hopes for a “realistic” opportunity to win another championship. That window may be closing, and the 2025-26 season could mark his final legitimate shot at doing so.
The Lakers have made significant offseason additions to stay competitive in the NBA Western Conference. They’ve addressed defensive shortcomings by acquiring Deandre Ayton to solidify the center position and brought in Marcus Smart, a savvy guard capable of covering for Doncic’s weaknesses on the defensive end.
As the Lakers enter a transitional era, they remain focused on maximizing their current title hopes while quietly setting the foundation for a Doncic-led future—possibly without LeBron James.
