Atletico Madrid secured a vital 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. With the aggregate score deadlocked, the series will now be decided at the Emirates Stadium next week.
Following a balanced first half where neither side could find an edge, Arsenal caught a massive break just before the interval. Viktor Gyokeres clinicaly converted a penalty in the final minutes of the half to give the Gunners the lead.
In the second half, Atletico Madrid came out determined to find an equalizer in front of their home crowd. They eventually leveled the score using the same method as their opponents; after a handball by Ben White, the referee pointed to the spot, and Julian Alvarez made no mistake, burying the penalty to make it 1-1.
With the tie perfectly balanced, both clubs will fight for a ticket to the grand final in Budapest when they meet again next Tuesday, May 5, at the Emirates Stadium.
