The USA’s best-ever World Cup finish came all the way back in the inaugural 1930 tournament in Uruguay. The US stormed their way into the semifinals with dominant 3-0 victories over Belgium and Paraguay, eventually bowing out in a 6-1 loss to Argentina to secure an official third-place finish.

Highlights when the USA were hosts
When the United States last hosted the tournament in 1994, the USMNT faced an uphill battle to keep the trophy in North America. - The Pontiac Silverdome opener: The first-ever World Cup match played indoors saw the US battle Switzerland. After conceding an early goal, Eric Wynalda answered with an iconic, curling 28-yard free kick directly into the top-right corner to secure a vital opening point.
- The historic upset: Facing a heavily favored Colombia squad, the U.S. claimed a legendary victory at the Rose Bowl. Midfielder Tab Ramos delivered a perfectly weighted assist to Earnie Stewart for the winning goal, while captain Tony Meola made several spectacular full-extension saves.
- Knockout stage qualification: Despite a narrow defeat to a brilliant Romanian side led by Gheorghe Hagi, the US had earned enough points (4) to officially advance to the Round of 16 as one of the best third-place teams.
- 4th of July epic: Playing the ultimate soccer powerhouse on America’s Independence Day at Stanford Stadium, the US held a star-studded Brazil team scoreless for 72 minutes.
