The New York Yankees fans were on hand to witness Marcelo Mayer’s first professional home run in the MLB — and it was a Bombers fan who caught the ball and received a special gift from the rookie.

Marcelo Mayer is already getting a taste of how sweet an MLB debut can be. While he first appeared in a game back in May, it was during Game 1 of the series against the New York Yankees that he launched his first career home run — and a local fan had the chance to catch the ball and walk away with a special gift from the Red Sox rookie.

The fan who caught Mayer’s first moonshot is Jesse, a Yankees fan from Manhattan. After catching the ball in the top of the fifth inning at Yankee Stadium, Jesse waited until the game ended to receive an autographed bat and ball from Mayer.

Although the Red Sox ultimately lost the game, it was a productive night for Mayer. In just two at-bats, he notched a hit and his first home run, boosting his average to .206.

How much is an autographed MLB bat and ball worth?

It depends on the player. Right now, Mayer’s memorabilia likely doesn’t carry a hefty price tag since he’s just beginning his career. Recently, however, Shohei Ohtani’s 50th home run ball reportedly sold for $4.3 million — but Ohtani is a global superstar with an established legacy.

Mayer’s future looks bright

So far, in his brief MLB career, Mayer has delivered a solid start: 8 hits in 35 at-bats, 5 runs, 2 RBI, and just 10 strikeouts none since June 4. He’s currently batting .229 with a .661 OPS.

Notably, manager Alex Cora has used Mayer sparingly in the Yankees series, likely due to his limited experience. But despite only three at-bats early on, Mayer has made the most of his chances to help the team.
