With Opening Day approaching, Carson Benge has become one of the most talked-about players in New York Mets Spring Training. The young outfielder is making a strong push for the starting job in right field, putting together an impressive camp on both offense and defense.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns addressed the situation as the team continues evaluating its roster. With about two weeks remaining before the season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the organization is still weighing several position battles.

After Benge received a subtle warning from Carlos Mendoza about making the NY Mets roster, Stearns made it clear that Benge has done everything the team expected during camp, but also admitted the Mets could face a tough call before the season begins.

ā€œI think Carson is having a nice camp. He’s taken very competitive at-bats and he’s played a nice right field,ā€ Stearns said, according to SNY. ā€œWe think he’s going to be a really good player, and we’ll have a difficult decision as we get toward the end of camp.ā€

Strong spring boosts Benge’s case

Benge has backed up the praise with solid numbers in Grapefruit League play. The outfielder is hitting .350 with a .381 on-base percentage and a .731 OPS, showing consistency at the plate after reaching base seven times in his last 15 at-bats.

Right field battle still unresolved

Even with his strong camp, Benge still faces competition for the job. Mike Tauchman, MJ Melendez, Tyrone Taylor, and Brett Baty are also part of the mix as the Mets finalize their roster. Stearns believes Benge will help the Mets at the major league level this season, even if his exact role is not yet decided.
