Yankees and Dodgers showing strong interest in Wilson Contreras’ teammate ahead of trade deadline

Things could get interesting for one of Wilson Contreras’ teammates, as both the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be in the running to land a Cardinals player.

The New York Yankees continue to fine-tune their roster. Recently, they sent two players down to Triple-A and promoted a rookie to the big-league squad. Now, much like the Los Angeles Dodgers, they’re reportedly eyeing a trade for one of Wilson Contreras’ teammates—an All-Star infielder.

The player in question has only been in St. Louis for four years but has shown steady development alongside veterans like Contreras and other Cardinals leaders. This season, the 27-year-old has hit nine home runs.

Between the Dodgers and Yankees, it’s the Bronx Bombers who are in greater need of offensive power. Their lineup has underperformed this month, and a string of costly errors has left them at 56-47, sitting second in the AL East.

Who is the player drawing interest from the Yankees and Dodgers?

According to a report from Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic, both teams are showing interest in Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan. The 2024 All-Star is batting .293 through 97 games this season, with 110 hits, 42 RBIs, and just 56 strikeouts.

“Multiple teams have inquired about All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan, with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers known to have interest,” Rosenthal reported. “Both the Dodgers and the Yankees were major pursuers for Tommy Edman last year, with Los Angeles edging out New York in a three-team trade that sent Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham from the Chicago White Sox to St. Louis.”

A high asking price for Contreras’ teammate

The Yankees and Dodgers will have to be ready to pay a premium if they hope to land Donovan. Despite being relatively young and on a team-friendly contract—earning $2.85 million this season—the Cardinals are reportedly setting a steep price.

“Donovan is not considered untouchable, and the Cardinals will listen, team sources said. But the asking price is sky-high, and St. Louis is in no rush to part with him, as he still has two years of arbitration remaining.”
