The Los Angeles Lakers stand as one of the premier franchises in NBA history, celebrated for their rich legacy and iconic players. Mark Walter, who already commands ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has recently purchased the team for a staggering $10 billion. This acquisition raises questions about the franchise’s future for many fans and analysts. However, Draymond Green provides an unexpected perspective on this notable transaction.
“When I look at this move and the Lakers selling for $10 billion to Mark Walter, you know what I say? I said, ‘oh man, that makes the Lakers dangerous… The only thing ever stopping the Lakers was, by terms of NBA ownership standards, Jeanie Buss and the Buss family were one of the least wealthiest families… They had the big asset in which they just sold, but that’s kind of the source for their income,” Draymond Green said on his podcast.
The recent sale of the franchise excites fans who hope for improvements reminiscent of Green’s era. However, the new owners have not disclosed their plans. Thus, predicting major investments in star players or enhancing the sports project remains speculative. Moreover, the NBA enforces strict financial regulations, complicating discussions of significant financial commitments.
Despite the sale’s completion, Jeanie Buss stays on as the team’s governor, according to ESPN. Yet, her continued involvement does not guarantee significant influence. Mark Cuban’s diminished role with the Dallas Mavericks after the Dumont family takeover offers a cautionary example. In addition, ESPN reports that the Buss family will keep a 15% stake in the franchise for a specified period.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson shares candid thoughts on Mark Walter’s ownership era
Mark Walter’s arrival brought anticipation among the franchise’s supporters. However, others worry the ownership change could profoundly impact the team. The Buss family had nurtured the franchise as a family business since 1979. This fostered a reportedly deep sense of camaraderie within the organization. Despite these concerns, team legend Magic Johnson did not hold back sharing his candid thoughts about the transition.
