Theo Johnson left practice on Monday after suffering a big collision. However, after that the New York Giants head coach, John Harbaugh, gave a bit of an update on the status of the tight end.
Per Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the incident happen while Johnson was blocking, and he left the practice after slamming his helmet. However, Harbaugh then clarified the situation. This is the same practice where Malik Nabers gave the Giants hope with a new rehab milestone.
“Harbaugh said Theo Johnson collided with Kayvon Thibodeaux. Harbaugh said he didn’t get an update that it was serious, said he thinks he’s OK,” Duggan reported. When there is a serious injury, usually the initial reports indicate that. However, this is not the case.
Johnson lost a step but was important last year for Giants
With the addition of Isaiah Likely, Theo Johnson saw his role get diminished for this season. He’ll be featured more as a rotational piece rather than an ‘all-snaps playmaker‘. He is the TE2 of the roster.
Last season, however, Johnson had 45 catches for 528 yards and five touchdowns for the Giants. The 25-year-old was poised for a breakthrough, but with Likely coming to the team, he will not be able to shine in his own light.
Theo Johnson vs Isaiah Likely
Isaiah Likely and Theo Johnson form a two-tight-end tandem for the New York Giants, with Likely functioning as the primary receiving weapon and Johnson handling more inline and blocking responsibilities.
Likely is also not as polished in the blocking department, so their skillsets compliment really well for the team’s necessities. After all, none of them are elite at what the other excels at.
