Watching key players go down with injuries every night definitely doesn’t help their cause. On that note, head coach Paul Maurice delivered a much-needed injury update.



With Jonah Gadjovich and Sam Bennett uncertain to play when the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Panthers</a> take on the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 4, Maurice addressed their status with a clear update for Marchand and the rest of the team to hear.



“Bennett is fine, per <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/paul-maurice" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paul Maurice</a>,” as reported by Miami Herald’s Jordan McPherson on X. “Jonah Gadjovich not traveling [with the team], but Maurice said an update on him would come Wednesday.”



<h2>What happened to Bennett and Gadjovich?</h2>



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sam-bennett" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bennett</a> wasn’t on the ice for the Panthers practice on Monday morning, raising alarms around Broward County. With the Cats scheduled to board the cross-country flight to California after practice, many were worried Bennett might be unable to join the team on the upcoming road trip. However, it seems the Conn Smythe Trophy winner was only taking a rest and is good to go.

Gadjovich, on the other hand, remains sidelined with an upper-body injury. Maurice announced that the 27-year-old will be out for at least a week, which would have made him eligible to return for the matchup against the Ducks at Honda Center. However, not only will Gadjovich miss the team’s second meeting with Anaheim, but he also won’t travel with the squad for their upcoming road games against the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Vegas Golden Knights.

As the Panthers pack their bags for a crucial West Coast road trip, they’ll look to keep their momentum rolling. Riding a three-game point streak, Marchand and the Cats hope to harvest some much-needed points in a tough region. Traveling from the Sunshine State to the Golden State is no easy task—the coast-to-coast flight can take its toll, and the Panthers have frequently been caught flat-footed in California. Mostly, though, when facing the Kings on the road.

When Marchand, Bennett, and company walk into Crypto.com Arena, they’ll be looking to snap a six-year hex. The last time Florida won in L.A. was back in March 2019. Aaron Ekblad is the only current Panther who was on that roster, while Aleksander Barkov—who also played in that game—remains on LTIR and will miss the trip to La-La Land.



Conversely, the Sharks and Ducks are the two teams Florida holds its best winning percentages against—62% and 57.6%, respectively. That’s excluding the Utah Mammoth, whom the Cats have faced only twice—and defeated as many times. The Panthers haven’t lost in San Jose since November 2015, and Florida is currently riding a six-year win-streak over the Ducks in Anaheim, with its last defeat being on March 2019.

<h2>New number, who this?</h2>



In a shocking turn of events, Samoskevich will don a new jersey number for the 2025-26 NHL season. Number changes are nothing unusual in the league, so that alone wasn’t the surprise in Florida. What caught everyone off guard was Samoskevich’s decision to take the vacant No. 11 sweater.

Many in Sunrise believed the jersey might eventually be retired by the franchise, but Mackie putting it on almost certainly means it won’t be heading into the rafters—at least not with Huberdeau’s name on the back.

“It’s funny because we’ve covered the finals for these guys for a while. And when they need something, the guy you think of that can change the game with one touch of the puck on his stick is Sam Reinhart. And that’s no knock [on the rest of the players],” Rupp said, via NHL Network.



“I think Aleksander Barkov is a better player. But the point is, [Reinhart] is a game changer. He knows to find that spot, whether it’s on the power play or that soft area on the ice, between coverage. And it just has to be there one second, and it’s in the back of the net. I think that’s the one thing that jumps out to me is when you need a big moment, I feel like Sam Reinhart is your guy.“

As a key veteran enters a contract year in the 2025-26 NHL season, the Cats aren’t rolling their dice.



The Panthers are in prime position to become a modern-day NHL dynasty. Hoisting back-to-back Stanley Cups was only the beginning for the team in the Sunshine State. Now, the real fun begins. “Something in the $6.5-7 million range for five-six years may get a deal done quicker than not,” Florida Hockey Now’s George Richards stated. “It would not be surprising to see Bobrovsky get a shorter deal (say four years at $8 million per) which would end when he is 42 years old.“

<h2>Once upon a time…</h2>



Back when Bobrovsky signed his seven-year, $70 million contract with the Panthers in 2019, many across the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> were skeptic. Some even went as far to say the deal would go down as one of the worst in league history. 



After a rocky start to his tenure in Florida, Bob turned the page and became a brick wall when the Cats most needed him. Now, all concerns about how much Bobrovsky makes a year or his impact on Florida’s cap space are long gone. 



<h2>Donning the leaf</h2>



The trio of recently extended Cats: Marchand, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/aaron-ekblad">Ekblad</a>, and Bennett will also join forces during Team Canada’s National Team Olympic Orientation Camp, which is set to take place in Calgary from August 26-28.

“Playing down in Florida, and being able to live there and see the support of the fans, I don’t want to leave. Nobody wants to leave,” Tkachuk said in dialogue with NHL Network. “That’s why we’ve created something so special down there.

<h2>Stargazing</h2>



While the math is definitely not on their side, the Panthers might have one last trick up their sleeves. The Pittsburgh Penguins are actively looking to part ways with some of their best assets, and defenseman Erik Karlsson might become available for the right price. On that note, an insider believes Florida holds the best odds to acquire the former All-Star.



“[Karlsson has] always been attached to the Panthers,” insider Jeff Marek said, via The Sheet. “Every year it was ‘Panthers are interested in Karlsson’. I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but if he’s going to move somewhere, maybe throw a dart there.”

The core is set in stone, and the message to the NHL is clear: catch us if you can.

The year-round beautiful weather and lack of state income tax are just the surface of Florida’s success. Bill Zito and company have built a winning machine—one the rest of the league has no answer for.



Marchand, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sam-bennett">Bennett</a>, and Ekblad could all have signed bigger contracts elsewhere after their astounding production in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Still, no offer could match the Panthers’ pitch. For the trio of pending free agents, winning clearly means everything—and no other franchise is currently on Florida’s level in that regard.

<h2>Swiss Army knife on the ice</h2>



After appearing in only seven outings in the 2023-24 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, Samoskevich played 72 games in the 2024-25 campaign. The rookie registered 31 points in the season, tallying 15 goals and 16 assists. He displayed his ability to come in clutch and play almost anywhere on the ice. Though he shifted constantly through the lineup, ‘Samo’ scored five game-winning goals.



“He showcased his ability to slot into any hole in our lineup and find success this past season, which is a testament to both his play and character,” general manager Bill Zito said after the extension was announced.



Albeit his name will go up in the Stanley Cup, Samoskevich appeared in only four games during the postseason. Paul Maurice and his staff prioritized experience over young energy, and it clearly paid off.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Florida Panthers</a> stunned the hockey world this offseason by securing Brad Marchand, Aaron Ekblad, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sam-bennett">Sam Bennett</a> to long-term deals—moves that many believed would be financially impossible under current salary cap restrictions. While the contracts signal a clear intention to maintain championship contention, one of them has sparked widespread controversy.



At the center of the debate is <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand">Brad Marchand</a>, who signed a contract extension that would keep him under team control until age 43. Marchand, known for his gritty leadership and offensive consistency, is coming off a productive campaign—but the length of his deal is unprecedented for a player his age.



The structure of the contract has led to strong accusations of cap circumvention, a violation the NHL has vowed to crack down on. David Alter, analyst and NHL insider for The Hockey News, was among the first to publicly criticize the league’s approval of the deal, citing its similarity to other high-profile cases that were ultimately blocked or penalized.



<h2>Is the Marchand deal a violation of the CBA’s spirit?</h2>



“I still can’t believe the NHL allowed this deal to go through,” Alter shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Yes, it’s within the rules. But the Ilya Kovalchuk 15-year, $100 million deal was also within the rules until the NHL said enough was enough and didn’t allow it.”

In Alter’s view, the Panthers are exploiting a legal gray area: extending Marchand’s term far beyond his expected playing years in order to reduce his annual cap hit. This tactic, often referred to as “front-loading,” has become controversial in recent NHL history—prompting several rule revisions over the past decade.

What troubles many insiders is the NHL’s stated intent to prevent such maneuvers. “It is kind of sketchy,” Alter continued. “I’d be surprised—or maybe I shouldn’t be—if the NHL allows it. This looks like pure cap circumvention… doesn’t look like anything is going to be done about it.”



<h2>Should the NHL step in and review the contract?</h2>



Marchand’s deal is legal under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, but critics argue it undermines the cap system’s fairness. At 37 years old, Marchand would need to maintain NHL-level performance into his 40s to fulfill the contract’s full duration—a feat accomplished by only a handful of forwards in league history.



As Alter points out, if Marchand retires or is placed on long-term injured reserve in the latter years of the contract, the Panthers would avoid cap penalties while reaping the benefits of a lower cap hit in the earlier seasons. This loophole—though technically allowed—has drawn renewed concern about cap integrity.

Now, the league has been put on notice: a dynasty is brewing in Broward County. “These guys have bought in. It’s special to watch. I think they are going to be a real issue for the other 31 teams for the next seven, eight years, or however long [Aleksander Barkov] and those guys are there,” Keith Yandle said about the Panthers on the Spittin Chiclets podcast.

<h2>The Sunshine State</h2>



Much talk has circled around the Panthers and the benefits of playing in a no-income tax state. After Marchand, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sam-bennett">Bennett</a>, and Ekblad all took big discounts off their new contracts, the buzz surrounding the organization and the state of Florida only grew louder. However, there are several other factors that also play a role and Yandle made sure to put on the table.



“[Ekblad] took a huge hometown discount. Obviously, they are still being paid handsomely,” Yandle added. “But, it’s one of those things, when you get to go home from the rink and the sun’s out, you can go play golf, get away from the game a little bit. You don’t really have any bad days, everyone’s in a good mood. A lot of it has to do with living down there.”

<h2>Here come the Leafs</h2>



After losing to Florida in seven games, the Toronto Maple Leafs seemingly grew fond of every available player on the Panthers. Toronto hoped to sign one—or more—of the pending free agents in Sunrise, yet not one of the three top candidates became available. However, when one door closes another opens, and that might have just happened for the Leafs.



With the salary cap breathing down their necks, the Panthers have little choice but to part ways with a cap casualty. And the Maple Leafs are reportedly ready to pounce on the opportunity.

Forward Evan Rodrigues is expected to be on the move, and the Leafs are among the teams linked to him, according to insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. They aren’t alone, though — the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, and Chicago Blackhawks are also reportedly in the mix.

Only 52 names are etched onto the Stanley Cup for each winning team. It’s a big number, yet it can sometimes feel small. Some players may not see the ice during the championship run, but their impact on the organization is deeply felt. That might just be the case for a former teammate of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/matthew-tkachuk">Matthew Tkachuk</a>, Sam Bennett, and the Florida Panthers, who has now announced his retirement after a 15-year NHL career.



Any team can catch fire at the right time during the Stanley Cup Playoffs and end up hoisting the Cup. However, more often than not, there’s a bigger story behind the scenes. Most NHL franchises learn their hardest lessons through bumps and bruises. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a> might just be the perfect example of that.



Tkachuk, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sam-bennett">Bennett</a>, and company had to learn how to win—and that’s a lesson only taught by the most painful experience: losing in the Stanley Cup Final. Instead of drowning in their sorrow, the Cats bounced back and went on to capture <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/nhl-teams-back-to-back-stanley-cup-wins">back-to-back championships</a>.



There are several unsung heroes in Sunrise, many of whom haven’t played a single game during the Panthers’ recent conquests, yet remain beloved figures within the organization. Zac Dalpe is definitely a player who fits perfectly into that category. Drafted in the 2008 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> Entry Draft and making his debut in 2010, Dalpe is now calling it a career.

“I’m proud of what I got to do, but more importantly I’m so proud of who I got to do it with,” Dalpe said in a heartfelt retirement letter. “I appreciate every single person that was along for the greatest ride of my life. A Canadian kid got to be a hockey player for 15 years. In the beautiful words of Gord Downie – I got to go, it’s been a pleasure doing business with you.“

<h2>More than a goal</h2>



Dalpe played 13 games during the Panthers’ postseason run in 2023. In a magical stretch that saw one of the NHL’s biggest upsets in history, Dalpe etched his name into franchise lore with a crucial goal—a moment fans in Sunrise won’t soon forget.



Dalpe’s lone career playoff goal—and point—came in Game 6 of the first-round matchup against Brad Marchand’s Boston Bruins. With the Cats trailing 3–4 and needing a win to force Game 7, the veteran buried the tying goal in the third period. Florida went on to win 7–5 and force a winner-takes-all showdown at TD Garden, which became an instant classic in its own right.

<h2>Glass half-full</h2>



Dalpe appeared in only nine games during the 2024–25 AHL season with the Charlotte Checkers and didn’t suit up in the Calder Cup Playoffs. He still endured the disheartening loss in the Final to the Abbotsford Canucks, nevertheless, but he has he has learned to find the silver lining in the two times he fell just short of lifting a trophy.

“Yes, Vegas got the better of us – the Panthers – in the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. And yes, Abbotsford did too in an unforgettable run this year chasing the Calder Cup. I learned so much during those runs. They both unequivocally were the most special times in my career. Even though I didn’t get my name on those beautiful trophies, I know that I truly tried. There’s value in that.”
